Importing NEF files

I recently experienced a very hard crash on the hard drive that contained all of my imported files for Lightroom.  I have the original files on a separate drive, mostly in a .NEF format (Nikon's proprietary format).  I opened a new catalog in LR and am trying to import files that I need to reedit but for some reason LR says "The files appear to be unsupported or damaged".  However, I can view the files in Finder and I can open them in Photoshop just fine.  What am I doing wrong in trying to get them into LR???

What version of LR? What source of NEFs? (Which Nikon model)
It may be that your version of LR is too old, or your version of Nikon is too new for them to be read. You can use the free Adobe DNG converter for one path, or d/l and use v. 2.4 of LR as another, but it's a paid upgrade after 30 days.

  • I have used lightroom for years on my PC and just installed it on my new iMac.  I cannot import NEF files from iPhoto or from my Lacie hard drive into Lightroom.  I have tried Lightroom Help but still cannot import NEF files.  What am I doing wrong?

I have always used Lightroom with a PC and now have installed Lightroom 3.6 on my new iMac.  I cannot import raw (NEF) files from iPhoto (or from my Lacie drive for that matter into Lightroom. I have tried Lightroom Help to no avail. How do I import NEF files from the iMac into Lightroom?

If they are the same nef files that you were importing into your PC, see if the reason is an error message like the thread above this one. Permissions issue.

See my reply to a later simplified version of your question. I don't think that either iPhone or iPad recognize RAW files such as NEFs. And the iPhone is not designed to be a mass storage device like a portable flash or portabel hard drive for temporary storage of files, if that's what you're after.  As I mentioned in my previous reply, I have an iPad and have been experimenting with it as a tool for photography, hoping that it would be a nice travel tool for backing up and viewing photos from my Nikon dslr. But both the iPad and iPhone just are not set up to do that well. Both show photos nicely, but organization of photos is very frustrating since you can't create albums on the iPhone or iPad, but only back on your sync computer. (There is one very powerful photo organization app called SortShots, but you import photos to it and it organizes and stores the images wtihin the app not using the native photo app. It doesn't work with NEFs either.) I don't know of any RAW processing software for either device.

  • Failing to import .NEF files into iphoto

i photo will not import .NEF files. Every time I try to import a file an error message comes up saying...
The following file could not be imported. (import failed).
The .JPEG file imports straight from the camera, however the .NEF file will not import and I get this error message.

Is your Nikon listed here (http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade/cameras.html) as a Tiger compatible camera? Also have you run this update: Digital Camera RAW Support Update 1.0.1 (Universal)

  • Which Raw plug-in using Nikon D7000 and Photoshop Elements 7 for importing NEF files?

Cannot import NEF files from Nikon D7000.
Which Raw plug-in is avalible for Adobe Photoshop Elements 7? According to Help sites version 6.3 is needed, But is it kompatible with Elements /??
    Please help!

It’s not possible to update PSE7 beyond ACR 5.5. You have two alternatives:
    1) Upgrade to PSE 10. 2) Download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your NEF files to the Adobe Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your original NEF’s as backups)
Windows download click here DNG Converter 6.5
Mac download click here DNG Converter 6.5

  • Trouble with importing .NEF files, help please?!?!

I am trying to import my .NEF files into Lightroom and keep getting a message that pops up stating "The files are not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom.".  I have never had a problem importing .NEF files before.  Does anyone know why I keep getting this message?  Help, please and thank you!

Either the NEF files are from a camera newer than your LR version – each camera must be supported explicitly, OR your NEFs have been corrupted by using new camera NEFs with older Nikon software.
So either upgrade your LR to a new version or stop using obsolete Nikon software with your NEFs.  You can use the following utility to fix the corrupted caused by obsolete Nikon software:

  • Importing NEF files in iPhoto 08

I am experiencing some problems in importing NEF files (RAW for Nikon) from a SD memory. During the import process iPhoto is displaying a warning message that it's not possible to import some of the files (in this case 12 pics over 180 total). The 12 files seem ok as I am able to open them in Photoshop without any problem.
Never had this problem with previous version of iPhoto: any setting I should change in iPhoto 08? Thanks.

No special settings needed. Since it is only some photos out of a whole set, it points to an issue with either the files or the media. You say you are loading them from your mem card so try to copy the whole folder to your internal drive in the Finder first. Then import in iPhoto.

  • Why won't Lightroom (current version) import NEF files?

I have Lightroom v. 5 current, and it fails to recognize and import .NEF files. I use a Nikon D800, and can't directly import the RAW files into Lightroom. It doesn't make sense to me that this fails to work since most instructions seem to assume it does. Perhaps I am overlooking something obvious, but I don't know what.
    Appreciate any help!

You have most likely used an obsolete version of a Nikon Transfer or Nikon ViewNX to work with your NEF files.  Nikon says these old versions change something in the metadata of newer Nikon files that makes them unrecognizable to Adobe products.
Either update your Nikon products to versions that are as new as your D800 camera, or quit using Nikon products to transfer and view your images.
To uncorrupt images that you’ve already transferred or viewed, a utility from this website will correct the problem:

Yes if you apply the Digital Camera Update 4.01.

  • Iphoto won't import NEF files (RAW) How do I convert to Jpeg?

Iphoto won't download Nikon NEF (RAW) files. Nor will Aperture. Can I convert existing files to Jpeg ?

Iphoto won't download Nikon NEF (RAW) files
The raw support is specific for each camera model. iPhoto and Aperture can import NEF files for many Nikon models, and it will depend on the camera you are using and your MacOS X version, see this list of supported cameras: Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
Can I convert existing files to Jpeg ?
Use the software that came with your camera to develope the RAW files, that will give the best results.  Or try the Adobe DNG converter - download it here: Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh

  • LR 5.7 and Nikon D7200. unable to import NEF files.

I have LR 5.7 and a brand new Nikon D7200. I upgrades LR3.x to 5.7 and now i am unable to import NEF files. Is there a solution? did i do something wrong?

Though this is not productive, and to those on the thread, my apology, JimHessI have had the service for greater than a year and I am month to month  - so I would be surprised if there is a cancelation fee. With Respect To the 'do not get it' the camera is 2 days on the market, so yes, I do understand no support right now, but, as you stated in your earlier post, 'a couple of months' THAT is what I do not understand! I do not know if you work for Adobe, or just a user but that is where my comments started.
In My Humble Opinion 2-3 weeks, that is something understandable. Now, it is up to Adobe, a business, to make the decision of how many resources they put on this, and thus the timing. As a consumer the only 'vote' I have is my dollar!
The cloud market is great for companies that get a constant revenue stream to fund their business, verse perpetual licenses where they obtain lumps of business from upgrades. When they build a new version with enough value to drive their install base to move/pay for the next upgrade. To the consumer the value of the cloud, should be continues and timely enhancement and not waiting for long next release schedules. That is why over the next few years I will give more money to Adobe that buying perpetual licenses, the continues and timely updates.
I will let you have the last comment on this, as I am done on the negative side.
What is more useful is posts like trshaner who is showing novices like me how to continue to use the product through features in the product.

  • Lightroom does't import NEF Files

I have read about others' troubles importing NEF files into lightroom and I can't seem to solve the issue.  Here is my error message:

I can import files into my PC using Nikon View NX2 and then import into lightroom as a DNG but that isn't a very efficient process.

  • Upgraded to Lightroom 3.6, cannot import NEF files from D700

    Hi!
I just upgraded my Lightroom to 3.6 on my MacBook pro running Lion. Since then, I cannot import my pictures anymore, either from the camera directly, through a compact flash reader (SanDisk) or by adding the picture directly from my hard-drive. The standard Mac utility to download images work fine.
Lightroom tells me that it cannot read the files, with Lithgtroom 3.5 it worked (nothing changed in the meantime Camera profiles, OS X, etc.).
You can find one NEF file I cannot import here (dropbox link) : http://db.tt/6zSiNzYK
    Any idea?

    Thank you Sean,
I'll try that once I'll have managed to get the import working. I created another catalog since last time I thought the import worked but again I got stuck.
Do you know anything else I could try? Ideally, do you know how  I could get a better diagnosis? By the way, I already got in touch with the CS but all I got was a lousy answer (update my ACR... for Lightroom -_- )
I'm using Lightroom since the first version and I start to really be discouraged.
    Thanks for your help,

  • Importing .NEF files into Lightroom 4.4

    Hi All,
I am running lightroom 4.4 and camera raw 7.4.  I can't seem to import a .NEF file.  I normally shoot Canon and have no problems with the .CR2 file.  The error message I get is that "The file is not recognized by the raw format support in Lightroom. (1)"    When I check for updates, it says that my software is up-to-date.  My guess is that I need to update camera raw but I don't if I can do that wit the version of lightroom that I have.  So my questions are the following:  Is there a way for me to update the camera raw version without having to upgrade from LR 4.4?  Is there another way that I can get this to work?
    Thanks
    Wesley

NOt sure which one is troubeling you.
As soon as you convert from RAW to some other file system, things are locked, so you only have the possibility to create a preset in lightroom that fits what you're expectiong to receive.
In many cases it makes more sense to shoot in jpg and get the Picture Style right in the camera, you have many options in the D810, as a D800-user I know.
The reason I upgraded to LR5 was also the change to the new D800.
You will have a better and faster workflow in LR5 with the big files and some better possibilities than in LR4 ...
The upgrade to LR5 is not as expensive as your D810 was
Many people are selling their key for less than 50$ ... I think this is quite fair and saves you a lot of time(=money) as you will be stuck in the DNG-workaroung in future for every RAW you shoot.

  • I'm running Lightroom 2.7 and Photoshop CS4 and can't open or import NEF files from a Nikon D600

Need help understanding why the NEF files created by my D700 work fine in both Lightroom 2.7 and Photoshop CS4, but the same file format created by a Nikon D600 keep getting a unkown error when I try to import or open them.

You can either upgrade Lightroom or use Adobe's Free DNG Converter to make a backwards-compatible file for LR 2.x to read. New camera support is only effected on current versions of LR and Adobe Camera Raw and your version(s) do not support the D600.

  • How to import NEF files from a Nikon Scanner?

I am not able to import Nikon NEF files which are generated by the Nikon Scan 4 software.
Anyone has had this problem, and did he/she found the solution (or the walkaround?

The Nikon Scan 4 raw format is not supported by Aperture, see the list of supported cameras:  http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html
As a work-around, save your scans in another lossless format, e.g., as TIFFs.
