Importing non-iWeb websites consructed with Reunion 8.0 Genealogy Software

I constructed a website of my entire genealogy records using REUNION 8.0 and used ftp to upload it to my Charter.net server. Is it possible to either upload this same website to iWeb or to import the complete website into iWeb so it can then be uploaded to my .MAC account?
MAC G5 Mac OS X (10.3.9)

In this day-and-age, I'm not so sure how wise it is to post that kind of personal data on the net for all to see (especially identity thieves!) Do you have that password protected so only those who you want to see it, will?
However, if you do want everyone to be able to access that info, you could link to it from iWeb and keep it on your "charter.net" server.
You could also manually put it into your .Mac account and link to it there.
I don't think you are able to somehow import it into iWeb on your computer - it only deals with iWeb pages.

• Can I import a non-iWeb website into iWeb?

How can I import a non-iWeb website into iWeb so that I can use iWeb to edit the site?

You can't: iWeb cannot import html files, and relies entirely on its own 'Domain' file which lives by default in your User Library. You would have to recreate the site from scratch, using the original as a guide and a source for images and text; or use an HTML editor.
Depending on how complicated the site is you may be able to do this in Kompozer, which is free. It is a WYSIWYG web page created which also gives you access to the code, and which can open any HTML page (though if the page is heavily dependent on external CSS you may have difficulties with it).

• Import non-iWeb template

My wife is trying to build a website using iWeb for her business. She's not crazy about any of the templates that came with iWeb, or with any of the iWeb-specific templates that she's been able to find.
She has found some templates that she likes that are XHTML compliant (e.g., http://www.oswd.org/design/preview/id/2448). Is there a way to open them in iWeb, or to somehow convert them into an iWeb-compatible file? Thanks.

Is there a way to open them in iWeb
No.
or to somehow convert them into an iWeb-compatible file?
Drag-n-drop and/or copy/paste the objects is the only way.

• Can I merge various iWeb websites into one ?

I have around 15 iWeb websites each with varying numbers of webpages. I would like to organize them in one website. Is there a way I can take the websites and make them into pages and subpages of a single website?

If your Sites are in the same domain file, then you can drag the pages from one site to the other.
If you have separate domain files, then you have to merge the domain files first with iWebSites.
http://www.wyodor.net/_Demo/Aptana/iWebSites.html
iWeb has no subpages and you don't make them into pages.
To avoid navigation clutter, you can hide pages from the navigation bar.

• Using Flux with iWeb Websites

I don't have Flux but have been considering it to replace iWeb. Can anyone answere these questions?
Can I use iWeb and Flux together? For instance, If I publish an iWeb website to a folder and then import it into Flux, do some editing and then publish from Flux to another folder, will the website still work as before?
Will scripts that get overwritten when published from iWeb be preserved when re-published from Flux?
Bill

Old Toad and Roddy: Thanks for the information.
To bad you can't go back and forth. I need to give you a little background before I can ask my next question.
I've been using iWeb since it was released and like it's ease of use; I don't really want to get into code editing. I've been publishing to a local folder and then uploading with CyberDuck. I found that was a much faster process than letting iWeb publish to iDisk. I also have gotten familiar enough with html and java script to be able to paste scripts (like Google Analytics) in after publishing (I've been using Taco HTML edit because I like being able to store and manage the Clips).
I'm doing the same thing now that I've moved to my own domain on HostGator, except that now I upload with Filezilla. I can continue with this workflow but I'm a little worried about the future of iWeb and so am looking for a replacement. I realize that iWeb will continue to work and I have time to make the decision.
I'm hoping the replacement won't overwrite embeded scripts, like iWeb does, so that I can eliminate that part of the workflow and save a lot of time.
Just reading about Flux sounds like I could build the major parts of the website using the WYSIWG features but continue putting in the code that I know how to do now. Then as I got more familiar with Flux I could get more into coding if I chose to, but I wouldn't really need to if I didn't want to.
Roddy you say Flux is not the best choice. What do you recommend as better choices given what I want to do?
Old Toad do you have any recommendations?
Thanks for your help. I appreciate your guidance.

• IWeb on macbook pro with mavericks cannot import old iWeb files from time machine back up

Hi! The apple store completely wiped my macbook and installed mavericks. I made a time machine back up before bringing it in to be completely wiped. Computer had bad software so they recommended me to handpick items and bring them over to new operating system without completly putting the entire time machine back up on it.
So I did but my only concern is Iweb. Now I got Iweb back installed in mavericks I cannot seem to import any files from my back up to my application in my renewed computer with mavericks. I searched for .domains, sites and sites2 but I cannot extract anything and I still have some old websites stored with Iweb and use the application quite a bit...
Can anyone help?
Thanks a million....

Not sure what you mean by extract but this might help;
If you're running Lion or later the Home/Library folder is invisible and that's where the domian files are located. That folder will be invisible in the TM backups also. Therefore you can extract Domain files one at a time out of the TM backups for import into iPhoto. You would do it as follows:
1 - download and run Find Any File to search for a file named ".site".
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.
2 - the search can take a while due to the structure of the TM backups.
3 - select the backup from which you want to recover the Domain file.
4 - drag the file from the search results window to the Desktop.
If you recover more than one Domain file be sure to rename them after dragging to the Desktop so that you don't overwrite one with the next.
5 - you can put the Domain file(s) in your Home/LIbrary/Application Support/iWeb folder but will have to make the library visible as follows:
NOTE: In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible in Lion or Mt. Lion enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and press the Return key - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For Mavericks, 10.9, go to your Home folder and use the View ➙ Show View Optionsmenu to bring the this window:
To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder. So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

• How to Import Website File with Live Links?

I recently switched to a brand new MacBook Pro laptop and couldn't be happier. The last thing I need to migrate from Windows is my website, and I've run into a hitch.
I originally did the website in MS Word, and saved as doc type HTML, and used FTP to upload it. Not super-techie, but I'm not a web designer, and it worked to handle the basic text website.
For importing to iWeb, I've simply copied and pasted directly from the website, and that's worked okay, because most of the hyperlinks on the pages are to other pages on the site.
The problem page is the podcast page. For each podcast, there's a text block of live links to the topics/people/places discussed in that episode. When I copy and paste it into iWeb, the links are no longer live.
I can't spend the hours and hours it would take to recreate the hundreds of links, even if I wanted to.
The page is http://www.tarot-to-go.net/podcasts.html
Is there a way to import the live links?
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hm, I'm not getting the same results when I copy and paste it into a text box into iWeb - I get blocks of text, but none of the links are live. Is there a setting somewhere I'm missing?
Here's the updated URL of the page:

• I have a mobleme account and an existing iweb website. I would like to create a second website with a registered domain name. How do I do this?

I have a mobleme account and an existing iweb website. I would like to create a second website with a registered domain name. How do I do this?

All you need to do is create your second site in iWeb, move it to the top of lhe list of sites in the left hand pane and publish to your MobileMe account. You must make sure the second site has a different name from the first.
Then setup domain name forwarding to the second site following Apple's instructions here: iWeb: Using your own domain name. You will need to setup forwarding at your domain name provider also.
The key is that the second site (with the domain name) must the top top size in iWeb.
Note: with MobileMe scheduled to be discontinued on June 30, 2012, you might begin looking into obtaining another host. When you do you'll find that both sites will need to have a domain name.
When the time comes take a look at HostExcellence.com. I've had excellent results with it. They have a couple of packages that offer free domain names. And most important they have outstanding 24/7, ear-to-ear customer support.

• Modify a iWeb website with another program

Hi to all,
I need to edit a website built with iweb.
I'm using the mozilla Nvu program to edit pages. It's correct to use this program?
I do not see, however, the menu bar at the top ..
There is a similar program in windows?
What can I do?
Thank you

I'm using the mozilla Nvu program to edit pages. It's correct to use this program?
I do not see, however, the menu bar at the top ..
In theory you can use any editor but, in pratice, its not see easy. iWeb is a beginner style drag and drop application and uses absolute positioning for a number of elements. This can be a real headache to edit since editing one div will require repositioning the others by trial and error.
The default navigation is generated using javascript so its not to easy to edit either. Example of the code you will see in the HTML doc for each page...
//><!--

• Please Help Publishing iWeb Website With ... ??

Please help. This is so unfamiliar!
I am trying to publish my iWeb website not using MobileMe (don't really know what it is).
I need to purchase my domain name but don't know of a reputable company that will give me a web address that just ends in .com without other stuff behind it.
Also, someone said I need a "Bridge" that is Fetch??
Please advise if anyone can! Thank you.
Happy Holidays!

Okay so I have purchased the Hostexcellence basic plan, my domainname and webhosting, and $6 extra for personal information privacy, which came to about $64. At first they kept saying the domainname was wrong or something, until I finally wrote it in in all lowercase lettering, which solved the issue. They said they would connect within 12 hours in their confirmation email... The webpage message said:
ACCOUNT CREATION DELAY
We are sorry for the delay with creating your account. Our systems encountered a small problem and could not automatically create your account. You will receive the account access information within the next 12 hours. Thank you for your patience.
You have chosen to purchase the following service(s):

Wyodor mentioned starting with my own ISP. What info do I need from them? (we have Verizon).
I am now looking over the link Old Toad provided. Appreciate that.
Do i now start with Fetch or one.com to store my pages/files on?

• Safari Problem with Non-English websites

Hello every body,
I ran into strange problem, I do not know why I can not browse corectly some non-english websites like کانادا مهاجرت or مهاجرت کانادا or مهاجرت به کانادا . it sounds a messy, could I make a change in HTML codes to make it compatible with SAFARI?
Thank you

Taleo's job search is flat out broken on Safari. Clicking the "search" button does absolutely nothing. The latest Firefox is also broken.
The only conclusion I can draw is that Taleo doesn't support Mac users, period. Stunningly stupid. Says a lot about the quality of Taleo's products and workers.

• My website created with Iweb and hosted on mobileMe is not showing well on all computers. What could be the problem ?

My website created with Iweb and hosted on mobileMe is not uploading well on all computers. What could be the problem ?

I got a chance to look at it on a PC. Totally hosed up. It loads incorrectly then parts of it go blank.
I have a site that is based very much on one of the built-in templates and it works fine on the same PC. It contains only text boxes, image placeholders, and images with "picture frame" borders. Nothing fancy, no overlays, no extra code or anything. I haven't looked much at the other templates so I don't know if yours is mostly a template or how much you may have modified one or what tricks you may have done to get the look you wanted. Whatever it is, IE does not like it. Unfortunately, you can't really ignore them as was suggested; they make up a large part of your audience.

• Incorporating an album created with iweb into a website created with Dreamw

Hi, is it possible to create photo albums with iweb (I know, the answer to that is YES) and then incorporate them into my website created with Dreamweaver? If so, can anyone explain to me how to do this? I cannot find, on the 'puter, where the albums are stored! Sorry, I am NOT a computer expert:( Thanks in advance.

Thank you Wyodor :)) I now understand! Publishing to a folder on my computer and then using it in DW. I have tried that but iweb got "stuck" during the transfert, so I'll try again. I am NOT computer orientated but, strange as it may sound, I find it much easier to use DW than iweb!!!
On my pc I was fine using DW and Photoshop but since migrating to Mac I had problems creating my picture galleries - photoshop would only let me use 25 characters in my file names! (when creating the picture gallery). I am NOT good at explaining things but if you care to look at my site you will see what I mean (under cards - Drool cards 2009/10, for example) www.bassettissimmo.com So somebody suggested using iweb. I tried it out but found myself getting stuck - I have so many folders, sub folders and sub sub folders! But I found that the photo albums were far more attractive than those I could create in photoshop, hence my question to this forum.
Someone has already asked the question, and YES I do need very long file names!. There are about 10,000 (ten) photos on my website - it's a basset hound collectables museum! Thus, I like to give as much information as possible about each card or object. For example, in the cards section there will be the number of the card, type and if relevant artist, plus country of origin. Ex: 3452 greetings card, Pam Tanzey, USA.jpeg. So you see, 25 characters is not enough and I have not found a way in photoshop to solve this problem.
Thank you again for your help.
