Importing older tapes

I have a Sony Digital8 Handycam. I have video tapes made on this handycam and tapes made on an earlier 8 one. I have noticed that I can't import to imovie video made on my previous handycam. When I select import via imovie it sees the hanycam ie response to the play, stop, FF, and Rev, but does not import.
Any suggestions to get the video to import?
TCW

I too have a Digital 8 camera and I had the same issue as you did and I got mine to work by fluke.
1. plug a VCR into the inputs on the Digital 8 camera.
2. make sure the camera is set-up to let the signal pass thru it to iMovie 08.
3. hit "play" on the VCR and iMovie should recognize the signal and start to upload.
4. now with a non-digital 8 movie loaded in the camera, hit "play" on the camera and then hit "stop" on the VCR and the camera signal should take the place of the VCR signal.
5. I did this a couple of times and by the 3rd time there was no need to even use the VCR signal anymore and iMovie 08 recognized the non-digital 8 tape signal all by itself and I haven't had an issue since.
......as I said, it worked for me for some reason so its worth a shot if your looking for a solution
good luck.

  • No date importing older tapes

Importing tapes recorded since 2001 I have no problems. Each tape is displayed correctly in the mediathek, every day is separated in it's own event. But with older tapes, I can display the recording date in the display of the camcorder (e.g. 1999), but no date and time information is imported in iMovie. The whole tape is imported as one event in the year 2008, with the current date.
    I tried CANON MVX1i, CANON MD205 and JVC GR-D818.

To import the tapes is very easy. Start iMovie and connect your MiniDV Camcorder via Firewire to your MAC. The rest is done by iMovie, several dialog boxes will appear. But without the right date information and without any separation in scenes, it's a hard job to make a film.

  • Importing older .jpegs, not getting renamed and not able to find in catalog

First, I love lightroom. I've been knee deep for 2 weeks and am over 33,000 photos as of this writing.
I am noticing the following when I attempt to import older .jpegs:
At import, I specify to convert to DNG, I know this doesn't work for .jpegs, to add to catalog, to put into files by shooting date, to rename to my custom naming scheme, to backup when importing, etc. I press import.
So when the import begins, all the thumbs have the error in the top right corner, "the photo xyz could not be used because the original file could not be found".
A folder for the date is created in the catalog but has 0 files in it.
So when I click in the prompt to locate the file, it takes me to the folder, and I notice that the file is there however it has not been renamed. It retains its original name from pre import.
The only files I've noted this happening were shot in 2000-2001 with a Sony DSC-S70 camera. I went to look at the original files in mac viewer and they appear to be fine, smaller than today's files, around 512k, 1280x960.
Again, I love Lightroom, so much so, that I've spent the last 3 days, working 12-14 hours a day getting my digital life in order.
This is the only kink I've experienced so far in LR.
So to summarize, during import, the folder is created, the old file namess are copied into it, but in the catalog the new file name is referenced, so when you look in the newly created folder, there are files there, but not with the new names, with the old names, and the file sizes are very small, like 32k, which tells me they aren't the files, but thumbnails of some sort?
I've tried different ways of importing, not renaming files, using original file structure, etc, but nothing has worked.
My theories... Are .jpegs before a certain date not supported? Are these files somehow corrupt? Are they locked?
Thank you very much for your help, when this first started happening, I just deleted the folders that had 0 images in them. Then when I started noticing a pattern, I made notes of the folders I deleted so I can go back in and fill the gaps in, and since then, I've begun tagging all the files that are having this problem since I figured out what was going on so I can hopefully go back in and remedy.
I am using an imac with 4 gig of RAM and LR 2.
    Sincerely,

ok, deleted all the problem images from the catalog and it is much more stable. I tried crashing it, and it held firm. This is very encouraging.
Took a look at the suspect files and folders.
Did what you said, copied into the folder, and then imported without doing anything, they came in fine.
Tried importing and renaming, for some reason still not working.
Living and learning, when importing thousands of images in hundreds of folders, I should have added the step of looking into each folder before importing. I didn't do this. I only looked at the previews in Lr import. When I went back in and looked in the folders, there are several junk files, thumb creation files from other browser programs, html files, other various files, etc. Lr skipped the majority of these junk files, but a few came in and actually caused Lr to crash immediately when the came into view on my monitor.
Were I starting from scratch, I would open each folder, organize it by type and size and then go through with the lightroom import portion.
The way I did it, I imported a lot of low res cropped that I used for web and email, and now they are in my Lr catalog and look like duplicates.
Now that the former prob images are in the Lr dbase, should I try and rename?

  • Trying to import older .mbox files into Apple mail

I have been trying to import older .mbox files back into Apple mail over an hour.
No matter what I use in the import window, nothing seems to work.
If it imports it sends it to the mail downloads folder but nothing from that point on.
I can read text in TextEdit but it's all running together.

I noticed on the left side way down past my last mail box folder ( long list) for the import .mbox files.
    Seems they were hidden !

  • ITUNES FAILS TO IMPORT OLDER CDS AND FREEZES

HI ALL--FIRST TIME POSTING LONG TIME READER!
As the description heading indicates, my itunes has started failing to import older cds and hten freezes up? Anyway to circumvent this? How do i import these cds--should i burn same first to a nwer CDR? Please advise. Is this a common problem?

You are getting the opposite of my problem. For me, newer CDs give problems not older ones. There are several options available. No particular order, not all options.
Import as mp3 with another program. (Rip with another program, import with iTunes)
    Update drivers for current drive.
    Replace drive.
    Uninstall then reinstall iTunes/Quicktime.
    New computer. :-}

  • Why does iMovie stop importing my tape from the camcorder even though it says it is still importing?

Why does iMovie stop importing my tape from the camcorder even though it says it is still importing?

It's difficult to be sure without doing some network packet sniffing, but if it were another app syncing, it would be an awful coincidence, since it seems to happen only while I'm in Reminders.app -- as soon as I click the home button and go back to the home screen, it stops; when I launch Reminders again, it starts again.
Moreover, it happens when I am not in the house, which rules out iTunes syncing.
Note that it's not the syncing spinner (i.e. two arrows chasing each other in a circle) -- it's the data access spinner (like the wait spinner in many apps and the apple.com search box).

  • Problems with importing video tape into iMovie '08

I'm using a canopus advc 110 to import video tapes from a vhs recorder into iMovie. BUT, the process often stops after only a few minutes when I still have a long way to go. I'd like to be able to leave it to work for 20-minute chunks (longer if possible, but I think that's about the limit), but it keeps stopping after a few minutes. When I come back in the room, it keeps trying to import (time in upper right corner keeps going) but had quit earlier according to time on the lower center of the iMovie screen. This is adding to my frustration and time, which is limited. Any suggestions??

The canopus advc 110 will work IF you have a perfect tape.
Look at the Grassvalley ADVC300 it has the ability to compensate for bad tapes. Using Line Time Base Correction (LTBC), ADVC300 instantly cleans, stabilizes and preserves old VHS and Hi8 videos in clean DV format. No need to monitor, just start and forget. Fast forward the tape all the way and then rewind all the way before import will never hurt.
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).
    http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc300
The ADVC300 is for anyone who wants to do editing and is concerned about quality of color and speed, for the novice it is an incredible gizmo that will restore VHS tapes to a state close to the original fixing midtones, highlights and shadows on the fly. Not only can you simply convert analog to digital you can actually manipulate the signal going in (if you want to).
A bit pricey bit it WORKS.
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 08/09.
iMovie 08 and 09 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
Your workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, so iMovie 06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie 09, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08/09 is a "lossless" combination.
iMovie 09 is a wonderful programs assuming that you're using it for what it was designed to do, assemble videos to share on the Internet.

  • IMovie clip length when importing from tape

Having used iMove HD without any problems and up until now have imported video into an eMac, I know but it works, then copied the DV files to my new Macbook Pro laptop for editing.
Now I have the firewire adaptor for this MacBook Pro I have successfully imported a tape into iMovie 10 but now am completely stuck.
Each clip is one second long (5 minutes with iMovieHD and adjustable) and I can't do anything with the whole import.
If I select more than on clip any export function is unavailable. Thought I would export all the clips as one file then re-import as a work a round.
There is also no timeline for editing. The screen shows all the one second 733 clips (12 minutes).
Lastly, I have no problem editing video imported as a digital file, i.e. DV
I may be missing something, but its certainly not intuitive.
    What's wrong?

    Hi
    Help - No I've not got iMovie'13 v.10
    But a thought.
I would bring in iMovie HD6 (if you got that one - iMovie HD5 doesn't work) into Your New Mac - as it is 100% DV friendly.

  • Best Way to Import VCR tapes to iMovie

    Hello, all.
I have a small problem that I hope somebody can help me with: I currently have an ADS Pyro A/V unit. I was told my the local Apple dealer that would be the best way to import VHS tapes into iMovie. It has worked for a few tapes, but now does nothing except give me a static-greenish-loud-high pitch sound when I try to import a tape.
I have given up on this unit!!!!!!
Can anybody recommend a decent way to import my old VHS movies to my MacBook and into iMovie??
Thanks for your time & input!

I have the same situation as the original poster (VHS tapes I want to edit and store on DVD).
    However I don't have a CamCorder.
What I do have is a PVR that I have used to capture the video and I can write that to a DVD. That gives me the base video that I can work on.
However, the files on the DVD have a .VOB file type. I have tried StreamClip but it provides me with a number of options as to the format I can import it into.
Ultimately I want to bring the image into iMovie, edit it and then burn it back onto a DVD. I don't really care if the intermediate files are large, but I am a little concerned about loosing picture quality (which is not great to start with - the original images were on recorded on Super-8 movie film, then 'projected' and recorded onto the VHS tape of which I have a copy. However it is all I have!!!)
What is the best format (and if necessary, tool) to copy the .VOB files to - something that iMovie can use without conversion preferrable - and then write back to a DVD.
    Thanks
    Susan
(PS in case you haven't gathered, I'm new to all this side of things, but I have time and a strong desire to learn!)

  • Importing VHS tape into iMovie.

I am importing VHS tapes into either imovie 09 or 06. When I play back in the program, it has good quality. But when I save it, no matter what format: mp4, .avi, .mov, etc. The quality is very poor when played back on DVD player.
Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?

Use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09.

  • Problems importing HDV tapes

    Hello everyone,
First time I need to importe HDV tapes, frames recorded on HDV1080i 50i. I use a Sony HDV camera recoder, plug in with an firewire 800.
I set everything as it must be, then when I open the listed and capture the preview is black and when I start to capture it's says something like "missing of datas from the device, check the connections".
Do I need a special firewire cable for HDV images? Cause It works if I want to import some DVcam frames...
Please Help!! Just rent the camera for few days for import tapes...

Also, I have found that the WAY HDV is logged has a big effect as to how easily it can be captured - I used to constantly get the same warning you do. I started to mark my in and out points "on the fly" meaning the tape was rolling (NOT paused) while setting in and out points. Since doing it this way, I have yet to get that warning again. I imagine that it must have something to do with the GOP nature of HDV, but I'm not sure... I can use the same camera and cables to log and capture DV (paused) without an issue. As soon as I switch to HDV, the warning reared it's ugly head unless logged on the fly.

  • Trouble importing HDCam Tapes

Project I am working on is a Dutch feature film 24fps shot all over the world on RED.
Except for the Indian part - which was shot on HDCam. Today I started to try and capture these tapes and I have not been able to do it right - and it's night now. I am kinda desperate.
They assured me they shot the material at 24fps. So I set the J-H3 System Frequency to 24 and Monitor frequency to 48hz. I had no image. Then monitor frequ. set to 60hz. No image.
Then i saw that the timecode on tape was 25 fps. Called the set again (in China now) to ask if they were sure they shot on 24 fps. Yes they were sure.
But when I set J-H3's system frequency to 25 and Monitor frequency to 50Hz, I had image.
So i captured a tape in 25 fps. Checked then if timecode was the same in the clip as it was on tape. It wasn't. Difference becomes gradually bigger towards the end. So that looks like a 24/25 difference.
So I then tried changing the capture settings to 24 (and keeping the device control at 25) and i tried it the other way round, and i tried putting both at 24.
All of these options gave me clips that had weird frame rates like 24,77 0r 24,02 or 24,52.
And with all of these different options, the timecode kept "walking away".
The other problem I have, is that I do not have a decklink card that can capture HD at its full 1080 resolution, so i have to downconvert it to SD through the SDI of the J-H3.
So I capture them in Pro Res 422 HQ SD. And that is quite a pity cause I edit the material that is shot on RED in Pro Res 422 HQ 720 HD.
But when I capture the tapes, they are 4:3 fullscreen. And when I tag the anamorphic field of a captured clip, it doesn't look right. People look to wide. It looks as if it really is supposed to be non anamorphic.
But that would be strange, as the rest of the projects aspect ratio is 2.35:1
Can it be that the image is cropped (sides cut off) when downconverted to SD in the J-H3?
A monitor that i connected to the composite out in the J-H3 showed the same strange 4:3 image...

FCP X automatically splits imported tapes into their individual clips and there is no simple way of preventing this.
The clips will be listed in the order in which they were shot which is fine if you are importing a tape that is exactly how it was shot in the camera.
However, if you have edited a video, putting clips in non-chronological order and then export it to tape, FCP X will return those clips to the chronological order in which they were shot  ..........  which jumbles up your edited project.
There is no cure other than to recapture with FCE or Legacy FCP.

  • Imovie imported DV tape clips (no more)

I am importing DV tape into imovie 11 and in the past it alway was broken into clips when importing. It no longer does.  Is this due to the updated version since my old version did.
I cant find any settings to change.
    Thanks - Rick

    Hi
No it doesn't work like that - iMovie looks at the tape and reads the TimeCode and when it finds a break it starts a new clip. So it doesn't analyze the picture or audio to do this - and in analog material as VHS, Video-8 or Hi8 - there is no timecode at all after it's been converted to digital via A/D-box or Camera with Video-through function.
May be - something in iMovie settings/preferences that needs to be set - my look like this (sorry Swedish)
    and
If this doesn't work - I would trash iMovie pref file (or rather and easier - Create a New User-Account in System Settings then log into this and re-try. )
Now iMovie should behave when a DV tape is importe (that are recorded live - not a copy from any analog device)

  • Importing older cds

Has anyone else had problems importing older CDs, manufactured in the early '90s? I had no problem with this earlier this year when I first got my iPod but lately any CD manufactured more than 5 or 6 years ago won't import properly. Most often, iTunes will freeze while importing the first track, ultimately locking up the entire computer. Sometimes it imports 0:06 of the first track and then imports the rest of the disc successfully. Mostly, though, it freezes completely. I haven't had this problem on any newer CDs, just older ones. Unfortunately, I have a lot of older ones.

Continuing problem - iTunes still won't import older CDs. In fact it locks up the entire computer, forcing me to shut it down completely. Also, with new CDs, iTunes often downloads only part of a song. I've been using Windows Media to import but it has its own issues. Is anyone else dealing with this? I read a lot of posts about problems with the latest update (6.0) but they all seem unique to individual compoter. Has Apple addressed any of this? Is there another update in the works?
