Importing OMF files

Hello, I'm having trouble importing OMF files into Soundtrack Pro. Today, I exported an OMF file from FCP and want to import that file into Soundtrack Pro. But, when I launch Soundtrack Pro and go to the File (drop down) Menu, I do not get an option to import files. I only see an export option under the File Menu. Has anyone every experience this problem? Btw, I'm new to Soundtrack Pro....
Any help would be appreciated...
Thanks,
Archieh

Welcome that is odd if the menu is grayed out. What version are you running? 2.0.2 is the current from the Final Cut Studio suite, or 2.0.1 from the Logic Studio suite.

  • Tempo change in imported OMF file

    Hello folks,
I was able import a project (OMF) that I did with Cubase SX (Windows) into LP8. All audio tracks imported successfully. Project was done at 145 BPM. All audio was recorded at that tempo. Now in Logic Pro 8 tempo is 120 and if i try to change it to 145, all audio files are overlapped and things go upside down.
I am pretty sure there is a way in LP8 to change the tempo without the overlap.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
    Thanks.

    Thanks Donald.
I figured it out. I should have set the project tempo before I imported OMF file by default new project within LP8 is set to 120. so i changed the tempo to 145 BPM and imported the OMF...am a happy now.

  • Importing OMF files created from Final Cut 4.5

    Hi Guys,
I'm trying to import an OMF file created from Final Cut 4.5 and I'm getting a message saying "skipping audio part- edit point 190316987 too big." After I hit OK, I get thrown out of Logic 7. Has anyone had a similiar message, and if they did what did you do?

  • Import OMF into Premiere

    Hello,
How do I import OMF file into Premiere? Has Exported out OMF file from Premiere earlier and made finishing in ProTools, and will now import the OMF file back into Premiere. Is this possible? If not what is the easiest solution? We will do some cutting changes, it would have been fine with sound in sync.

    Hi,
Thanks for your post. As per the workflow Premiere pro can export the OMF files but It is unable to import the OMF files. The OMF's are not in the supported list of audio formats that Premiere Pro imports. The format supported for importing in Premiere pro are listed below. You can import the file if you change the format of the audio using any third party converter and then export it again in OMF.

  • Logic pro mix of avid omf files

i am researching if i can do a logic pro (or soundtrack) mix based on avid omf files, then re-import the mix files back into avid...
would using aiff files make this any easier?
    thanks

    Hi,
I did this last year and Logic Pro can import OMF files, but as mentioned this can be hit or miss... OMF is notoriously difficult to deal with between certain platforms and versions. I found that FCP's OMF outputs always opened in Logic without problems but it was hit or miss with AVID's - strange since it's their format!!
I would do a test to see if you have any import problems if you go with this workflow.
I will say that Logic (in it's current version) is not a good program for doing audio post - it's just not in the same league as Pro Tools in terms of simplicity and workflow. I spent a whole year trying to wean myself off of Pro Tools for audio post work, but all I learned from that experience was how much I wanted to back in PT. I really like Logic for music composition - it's better IMHO than PT for this type of work, but is suck for post. You may want to consider a DV toolkit version of PT for this kind of work (DV toolkit has the timecode ruler and OMF tools you will need). It's expensive, but IMHO a much better tool for the job.
As for audio format - use .WAV as it will work with either Mac or PC based AVID systems (PC based AVIDs don't know what an AIFF is). This avoids having to do a separate audio layback and it works like a charm - I never had any sync issues. Hope this helps.

  • Cannot import OMF

    Need some tips
I'm trying to import an OMF file into Soundtrack pro. The file was created in FinalCut pro (latest version etc) by my client.
I open a new project in ST and select "import OMF..."
I select the OMF file located on my HD and the process begins. I get a window with "importing OMF File..." and a progress bar but after about 1/10th of the distance it stops progressing. There is no cancel button. There is no sign of a crash - no signs of "soundtrack pro is not responding" or anything. Indeed, I can even play the empty timeline.
I've left it sitting there for an hour or so but nothing progresses. There are few audio files from the OMF in a new folder that seemed to have been written at about the the time the import was started but nothing seems to have been updated or written since then. Its like the import just stops for some reason.
I can open the OMF file up in Logic ok (though there is no automation info - though perhaps my client hasn't saved this etc)
Any ideas what is going on?

    update...
I can open this OMF from FCP in Logic. There is no level or crossfade info though.
The amount of bugs and issues I find in STP amazes me.
I'd really welcome any feedback on this OMF issue. Is anyone else successfully going FCP to STP via OMF?
I just want to sound (audio) mix a video project from FCP in Sountrack pro. The video has been edited on a completely different system and I need a neat way of getting the video edit audio to my system for mixing, without having to transfer huge amounts of unused captured footage from the video system. The video editor will be sending me the stuff on a dvd-r. Well thats the plan.
Is XML the best way? XML doesn't save any audio, correct? How do I get only the used audio + handles from the video edit for the xml interchange etc etc etc.
    Help!

  • Import OMF to FCP

Is it possible to import OMF files into FCP? The files were exported from Avid Xpress Pro I believe.

When Avid digitizes a file it becomes an omf, unless it's audio when can be an aif, depending on Avid settings. Avid take import a Quicktime, but again, it will become and omf. And Avid can import an omf... at least I'm guessing it can. If it was created in Avid then you don't even have to import but that's another topic for another message board.
Final Cut can't import an omf. You can export a clip from Avid as a quicktime that FCP can then import that.

  • Importing 32 bit aifs and OMF files into Logic

Is it possible to import 32 bit aifs into Logic Express 7 and arrange using an OMF file? If so, how?!
    Please help. Thanks in advance!

Have you tried importing it into iTunes? If that works, you could use iTunes to turn it into a file that GB can handle:

  • OMF Files not Importing into Logic 7.2.3

Can anyone help me with this ongoing problem ? I'm writing music for a film where my editor is using the latest version of Final Cut Pro 5.1.2, I'm running Logic 7.2.3 on OSX 10.4.8 she exports the OMF Files....but I can't import them on my system. The files are imported without any problems at the mixers studio, but he uses Pro Tools.
    Any Ideas ???

logic's import and export is very unreliable. actually it is something that i think is quite disgraceful. that said:
    - are you sure that you have a self-contained OMF file in version 2 format? not a referenced OMF? you can tell because the OMF file will be large if it has the audio content embedded or small if it does not.
    - most OMF problems are problems that come from the originator. for example, you can get problems if the audio is at different sample rates.
    - try to get everyone to work with AAF files which are more reliable and do the same job.
    - logic doesn't support different sample rates at the same time, unlike many video editing programmes. the audio should be consolidated before exporting and video references removed.
i hope this helps. this really is an area of weakness within logic. please post back with how you get on.

  • Omf file import

I understand that as it stands, Final Cut Pro X doesn't yet import OMFs. I have some footage in OMF that I would like to import and edit in Final Cut Pro X. Is there a third party application that will help me do this?

Sounds like Logic is creating an interleaved stereo track/file from the individual left/right channels. This is Logic's Default mode of operation (interleaved stereo)
If you do not want this behavior, go to Logic's preferences and de-select "Universal Track Mode" and try re-importing the OMF.
The other possibility is it's a limitation of Logic's OMF import or it was a setting in FCP's export.
    Warning:
Since "Universal Track Mode" is a preference it will affect all new projects and mess with pre-existing projects that were created with UTM selected.. don't forget to re-select UTM when finished with this project.

  • Help Need-All of a sudden can't import/open .OMF file without Logic quit

Hi all. Been a looong time since I posted but I'm back with a serious dilemma. I'm working on a short film with a deadline that's coming at me fast and furious. I just picked up an updated version of the .omf file and all of a sudden it won't load without logic quitting on me. What's going on? My Logic beahavior has seemed a little off but not noticibly disfunctional lately. do I need to toss my prefs? How do I do this if so? I'm always worried I'll delete something I can't recover...
I think that's about it. Let me know if I need to clarify the situation. This all worked fine a couple weeks ago. I'm using the powerbook 15" template video for NTSC. I'm clueless now and really need help. THANKS!

Nobody has any idea why this might be happening? Can anybody at least cue me in on how I should go about dumping my LP7 prefs and then replacing them or updating them again?
    thanks!

  • Can not open OMF file in Soundtrack

I'm trying to open an OMF file in Soundtrack that was exported from FCP and it gives me this.
    CNSExceptionWrapper
type = 16777216, error = 1886547263, message = error: Failed to open or create audio file for writing.
    What should i do?

It's hard to judge your level of expertise, so forgive me if I'm being too basic.  I don't know what that error means, but here are the things that I would start exploring
Have you had any success exporting omf files previously?  If not, try creating a new sequence and just putting a few seconds of bars and tone in the sequence and see if that will export as an omf and import into soundtrackpro.
Are all your sources 16 bit 48k aiff files?  If not, convert them.
Try duplicating your sequence in fcp and deleting the second half of the sequence and see if the omf export will be successful.  If it is, try duplicating the original sequence again and deleting the first half and see if that will work.  If there's a problematic clip, this is the technique to use to find it.
If neither half exports successfully to soundtrack pro, try copying the contents of your sequence to a new sequence.
You could just send your sequence to soundtrack pro from within fcp.
Post back with detailed answers and we can continue troubleshooting.

  • FCE & FCP compatibility with OMF files and Pro Tools

I am using Final Cut Express 3.5 and want to edit a future project on it for a friend. When I am finished with the project, I was wanting to export the audio as an OMF file so that it can be mixed in Pro Tools. However, I just realized that Final Cut Express 3.5 does not support OMF exporting.
I am trying to work around this problem and I just need some verification that my idea will work. This is my idea: Will it work if I take my finished FCE project and open it on a friend's computer that has Final Cut Pro and create an OMF file through FCP?
If so, after mixing in Pro Tools, will I be able to import the mixed audio back into my FCE (or worst case scenario, my friend's FCP) and be able to burn the movie to DVD?

    1. Depends on the FCP version they're using. FCP5.1 or later will work.
    2. Yes.

  • Logic Pro Crashing when importing OMF

When I go to "import OMF" from within Logic Pro 8, a moment after the import starts, Logic quits unexpectedly.
    Anyone?
    Thanks,
    Jon

Logic has always had an incomplete OMF import, it's very particular as to what it will accept. It chokes if there's too many regions and it used to choke if it was an OMF referencing 24-bit bit files. I think the 24-bit error was fixed but I don't think there has been any further develpopment.

  • Is there a way to view contents of an OMF file?

I'm trying to import an OMF file but it seems like it won't import, so I'm hoping to dig out some of its contents.
    Can anyone help?

thanks, maybe I just need to be more patient. It's aobut 82 megs.
I'm running 10.4.9. I think the OMF is from FCP, but I don't know. I'm doing a quick sound design job. It's only my third (sound design) job and only the second time I've imported an OMF.
I get the progress bar that says "importing media" or something like that, but it doesn't appear to be making any progress.
I'm going to try to import before bed in case it's just going to take a long time. In the meantime, I'm working off of a quicktime and some music that has since been replaced.
