Importing on an iBook

Hey all,
this may sound like a simple problem and im sure it will probably be something very obvious but its driving me mad!! I have a JVC GR-DVL150 miniDV camcorder and when connected to a 350Mhz G3 it imports fine (on iMovie 3 and iMovie HD). But, when i return home from college to work on my iBook, iMovie refuses to recognise the camcorder even though im running the same version of iMovie, using the same cable etc...I have tried running in Classic, deleting plist files from preferences, all to no avail. Is is something to do with firewire?!! Im new to Macs and am very lost....please help!

so, we do know:
camera is fine, cable is fine.. (otherwise, the G3 wouldn't recognize it..)
obviously, the fault lies at the G4...
connect your camera (connect it to power-line, just to exclude some weird effect, that a camera running on battery isn't recognized...)
launch the "Apple Profiler app" (under the Blue Apple, upper left)... click on "firewire" ... does it show the camera in its profile?
if NOT...
switch camera & Mac off, disconnect Mac from power-line, disconnect battery of iBookG4 ... wait 5-10minutes.. that should reset the firewire ports...
try again... look into the system profiler... still "no device"...?
bad news... probably, the firewire board got toasted... :-/
if sys profiler SHOWS your camera as some firewire-connected device.. then we "just" have some weird software problem... post back......

  • Size & scale images before import or let iBooks Author do it?

I'm importing images into iBooks Author and wondering if I should size them and compress them to roughly the size I need them on the page thus redicing their file size. Or go with the highest resolution and quality and just let iBooks Author compress and scale the pictures. Wonder also what gets the best result.
Is there any benefit to importing high resolution TIF or highest quality JPEGs???
    Any help, thoughs, tips appreciated.

Open  the Help files and check the section dealing with Graphics.
Better, if you have an iTunes Connect ( if not  get one you will need it) account you should open it look for Deliver your Content, top right are a group of PDFs download them.
One is the Asset guide - which  give full info about  graphics. Including.. Tiff is not acceptable.
Maximum image file size is 3.2 megabyte. For iPad retina ( and  basically everything)  2048 x 1536  rsolution is of choice really, subject to the  file size and the books size max of 2 gig. Unless all your images are intended for full screen,  re-size to suit your layout.
iBA does not compress or scale anything.. thats your  job.. and if you get it wrong.. the  book will be rejected by the preview team until you sort it out.
Save yourself  work and  time, download and study the asset guide and the  help files.

    Using iCloud?
Found this in the iBooks Help Center ...
    About using iBooks with iCloud
Your books, collections, highlights, notes, and bookmarks are available automatically on your computers and iOS devices—just use the same Apple ID to sign in to the iBooks Store.
If you buy a book on your Mac, it’s automatically available on all of your iOS devices with iOS 6 or later and with Show All Purchases turned on in iBooks settings. (Books made with iBooks Author aren’t available on iPhone or iPod touch.) To see all your purchased books on your Mac, choose View > Show Purchases in iCloud.
If you start reading a book on one device, you can pick up right where you left off on another device. Collections, highlights, notes, and bookmarks are also available on other devices when “Sync bookmarks, highlights, and collections across devices” is selected on your Mac in the General pane of iBooks preferences. On your iOS devices, turn on Sync Bookmarks and Sync Collections in iBooks settings.
If you’re not seeing your info on all of your devices, make sure you’re using the same Apple ID in the iBooks Store on your Mac and on each iOS device. Also, make sure syncing is turned on in the General pane of iBooks preferences on your Mac and in iBooks settings on your iOS devices.

  • When importing photos with iBooks Gallery widget, is anyone aware of a technique for simultaneously importing the photo's description (or jpeg file name) and writing it into the iBook Author caption field for the imported photo?

When importing photos with the iBooks Author Gallery widget, is anyone aware of a technique for simultaneously importing the photo's description (or jpeg file name) and writing it into the iBook Author caption field for the corresponding imported photo? I have 4,800 stills to import and can't imagine it's necessary to copy and paste the description for each.

As always, feel free to use the 'Provide iBooks Author Feedback' menu item for features you'd like added in the future, etc.

  • Formatting lost importing Pages to iBooks Author

I having a problem importing a text file from Pages '09 to iBooks Author maintaining some formatting.
My Pages document has some text in bold and some in bold and italics in addition to normal text.  Everything is in Arial font in Pages.
When I import the document into iBooks Author all the bold italic text shows up as normal text.  About 75% of the bold only text shows up as bold and the rest as normal.  When the bold words are in the middle of other text, the bold format is maintained.  When the bold text is at the start of a line it shows up as bold or normal after the import.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Import from older ibook to imac

I had a ibook and saved my address book to a usb drive and when I got my new iMac I am unable to import the addresses. I could not use firewire because the computers did not overlap. They are for work and I switched jobs. Is there anyway to get my old address book to import into the one on my imac?
I got the ibook in Dec 2006 and I just got the imac in Aug 2008.

sounds like you transfered the Adress Book application itself. that's an entirely wrong thing to save. the application itself contains no user data and would be useless to save. user data is stored in user-homedirectory/library/application support/address book. you should have saved that.

  • Import from Quark - iBooks Author?

Any chance this can import book layouts from Quark?
I have a book that was originally published by a service bureau using Quark.  You'd be amazed at how hard it is to get those Quark files converted to another format at a reasonable price.  The choice seems to be to pay $800 for Quark (ok, not huge money, but hate to pay that much for software I'll only use once) or to pay some service bureau even more to do the conversion for you.
Haven't been able to find someone willing to just load in quark and export to a more compatible format at a good price yet.  Considering the work required (ie: 10 minutes) you would think someone would be in the business.
There would clearly be a business in this, or if Apple just wanted to get faster uptake on books they could create a webservice to convert Quark, Indesign or other common file formats to iBooks Author so people could get their books online quicker.

You cannot bring in pre-designed page elements or test stylesheets (Quark Layout, InDesign Layouts) directly into iBooks Author to auto-magically maintain your books formatting as it was originallly laid out within your Quark layout files.
The best you can do for your Quark layout files is  export all of the text into manageable chucks (unsure how large your book is) and begin importing into iBooks author. Just be aware you will most likely lose any stylsheets (bolding, colorization, paragraph formats) and will have to redo this within iBook Author. If you book has images you will have to get your hands on the original image files that were used during the production of your book as a Quark layout does not store any placed images within its document structure.
With the recent versions of Quark 9...you can now easily export your layouts as eBook formats..perhaps this is what you need done...
Again I am assuming how your book is layed out...perhaps it is as simple as you state. Doable yes. Time commitment yes. Costly? Depends who recreates it for you.

  • Do MathType equations in Word import effectively into iBooks Author?

I am looking for the best way to build MathType equations in Word to successfully import into iBooks Author.

That seems like an extra step. Since iBooks Author (iBA) already has a "MathType Equation" command on its Insert menu, why not do it directly from iBA?
If, however, you want to do it as you describe (or perhaps you have an existing Word document and you want to use its equations in iBA -- that makes sense), you'll need to build the equations in Word, then select the one you want (i.e., click on it once), copy it, then use the Insert > MathType Equation command in iBA. When MathType opens, paste the equation into the window. Close MathType and the equation will insert into iBA.
Incidentally, WRT TX Aggie SE's suggestion to use the MS Word Equation Editor, I think you'll find that'll produce less than satisfactory results in iBA, no matter if you use the "old" equation editor, or the "new" one that was introduced in Word 2011.

  • Problems Importing pdfs into iBook and sync to iPad air 2

Is there a solution to what appears to be a widespread problem within the community? That of not being able to import books in pdf form into iBooks and subsequently syncing with an iPad Air 2 running iOS 8.1. This seems to be specific to pdfs not 'purchased' from iTunes. In the past I have had all my software manuals available on my iPad, synced with my iMac, all working happily and would dearly love to return this situation.
I then upgraded to iOS 8. Big mistake. iTunes on the iMac (OS 10.6.8) does not sync pdfs to new iPad.
Try syncing from MacBookPro (OS 10.10) still no luck.
There are suggestions to use iTunes, but there is no longer an option to view 'Books' in iTunes.
Can anybody offer a work around until such times as the collective 'apple digit' is removed and a not so 'minor bug' is fixed?
Are Apple working on this problem or even aware of it?

Have you tried the shortcut to add books/pdfs Command Shift O?
Command Shift O is not available in iBooks (Greyed Out)
Command Shift in Finder shortcuts to Documents
Maybe I didn't explain myself very well earlier. When I am working in iBooks, having control clicked multiple files and selected 'Open With iBooks' to get the pdfs into iBooks, (as per your suggestion) a click on a pdf icon initiates nothing, a double click causes the pdf to open in Preview. This I can achieve from the Finder.
The reason I haven't tried to sync from the MBP is that I rely on iPad iBooks as a reference source. At the moment it is working but not the way I want it to (Sync via iMac 10.8.6). When Ibooks on the MBP is finally OK, then I will try.
    Thanks for hanging in there.

  • Formats? import tape to iBook, email, then burn from PC to CD?

    Compound question following
I have an old children's cassette tape that I want to copy and send to my daughter overseas for her use as a teacher (the tape is no longer available otherwise).
    1. First, I will use Griffin's iMic + Final Vinyl software to import the tape to my iBook and place it on the desktop--I have the option of AIFC or WAV at this step. Which format?
    2. Then I will import the file to iTunes; choices = AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless, MP3 or WAV. Again, which format?
    3. Then I will email this to daughter in New Zealand. They have a PC and a dialup connection. Apparently they CANNOT use iTunes there for some reason. In what format should I try to send it?
    4. Then, I want her to be able to burn an audio CD that will play in any CD player. They have a Sony MP3 player and Sony's software, along witth Windows stuff, if this makes any difference.
Does anyone know just how I should do this?
    Thanks much!
    iBook G4 768MB 1.33GHz 60GB   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) and WAV are the default uncompressed audio file formats used for Macs and PCs, respectively, while AAC and MP3 versions of these files are typically 10 times (or more) smaller in size. If you're emailing the file you want to use a compressed format, and MP3 files will be more generally usable with a variety of PC software and players than AAC files (and you mentioned your daughter does not have iTunes).
Using the method with Final Vinyl and iMic that you outline, I would:
    1) save as AIFC (compressed AIFF)
    2) use iTunes to convert this to MP3
    3) send this as an MP3 file
    4) not sure what they would use to burn to audio CD on their machine, but this should not be a problem. Sony uses ATRAC, which is Sony specific, but will also play MP3 files.
The issues are more likely to be: (1) what mp3 settings to use and (2) whether you need/want to edit the files to remove noise and tape hiss. At a guess, you'll want to keep your file under about 5MB to email this. Uncompressed music files generate about 10 MB/min while at the default AAC setting that iTunes uses (128 kbps, stereo), this is about 1 MB/min. In the trade-off between sound quality and file size, you probably care most about getting the file size down. Try using the analog to the AAC "Podcast" setting under your MP3 import settings: 64 kbps, 22.050 kHz sample rate. I think the latest version of iTunes may remove your ability to separately select the sample rate, so you may just use "Automatic" for this. You may be able to play around with the sound quality vs. size, and test what maximum size you can send via email.
I recall that Final Vinyl can take care of skips but I don't remember that it had general purpose editing features, or that it worked particularly well for tape hiss. If you want to do more tape digitization, you might find it worthwhile to get a sound editing program. There are freeware versions such as Audacity, but I'd recommend either Amadeus II ($30) or Sound Studio ($79.95). Or another option would be to get software like Audio Hijack Pro ($32) which expedites the conversion process to digital format and can also capture any sound that your Mac plays. That might be most effective for you, since I think the program has many default settings for these imports. The editors (I use Amadeus II) offer more options for filtering and noise cleaning and can also do things like automatically splitting your digital recording into songs according to silence breaks. (Audio Hijack Pro can also split on silence and trim silent portions).
And for general background, see this Jan 2005 MacWorld article about digitizing tapes. Hope this helps
