Importing / Opening Adobe PDF files

I apologize if this topic has been covered in advance but I have searched until I am blue, and cannot locate any help.
Having said that, I was astounded to discover that Adobe InDesign CS3 does not recognize Adobe PDF files!
That deserves a resounding "Shame on you, Adobe!" After all, the whole idea as I understand "Portable Document File" is for easy portability between applications and platforms. For an Adobe application to not open a simple pdf file (text only) is totally beyond me.
Can anyone help with any work-around?
Shaking my head in disbelief is giving me a head-ache!
Thank You,
Jim Myers

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I was looking in the wrong places for your posts. I'm not that familiar with using forums.
Thank you to all who have replied.
I guess I need to do a better job of explaining my problem.
My resume was originally created in Freehand. I like the formatting of it, and would like to retain it as is. I've read the writing on the wall since Adobe acquired Macromedia, and fully expect Freehand to disappear.
I have had jobs which required me to use Freehand, as well as those who use Illustrator. They both have their strong points, but I realize we're going to end up with no more Freehand, so I want to port it to an Adobe product. Since Illustrator does not support multiple pages, I thought In Design would be the appropriate application.
I own Creative Suite 3 so I have all of the Adobe design products including Acrobat. I have been opening PDF's in Illustrator for a long time with a lot of success.
However, when I try to "open" or "import" the pdf's that were created by exporting to pdf from within the freehand document, neither option are available. The pdf document is greyed-out when I select "All readable documents" and when I use "All documents" I get this error message:
Cannot open the file "Editable Fonts.pdf". Adobe
InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in
that supports the file format may be missing, or the
file may be open in another application.
I hope I have been clear enough with my problem. Can anyone help?

I'm aware that I can place the pdf in InDesign as a guide, and re-typeset the document, but I'm hoping to learn the proper method for importing a pdf. Although my resume is only 3 pages (including a page of references), I know that I may have an instance with a much more complex pdf in the future.
One possibility is that the pdf created by exporting the Freehand document is not the "proper" pdf? But I don't know for sure, or how I should try to save it out of Acrobat?
I hope I have been clear enough with my problem. Can anyone help?

Try running Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If it works correctly in that configuration, then one of your add-ons is the culprit.

  • Error Opening Adobe PDF Files

    Hi...
I have suddenly had an error appear whe opening most PDF files - "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired."
Subsequently I'm unble to open these files. I'm on a Mac platform with OS X 10.8 and am using Adobe Acrobat version 10.1.4.
The files are mainly downloaded / saved to my desktop through Safari. These are PDF files that I've previously been able to open but all of a sudden can't.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated! ...thanks!!

Thanks for offering your assistance with this one mate... I appreciate it!
As requested, this is the first part of one of the files that won't open, as seen in Text Edit:

The rest of it is prety much gobbly **** and ASCI stuff - the kind of stuff that get's me stumped!
Just another discovery with this problem - I've discovered something interesting with my mobile phone bill, which I view as a PDF file in a safari window on my phone provider's website. I right clicked on the phone bill displayed in the Safari and used 'save as' to save a copy of this to my desktop so I could later open in Acrobat Pro and print, as I always do, however when I go to open that file from my desktop, the error occurs and can't open. HOWEVER - I discovered an option through the phone company website to open the file in 'Acrobat' within a Safari window, which I did. It adds Acrobat toolbar menu etc within the Safari screen and displays bill in PDF format as if in Acrobat. I then saved a copy of the file from this view on my desktop, and now That One I can Open! There is anoter distinct difference too - the unopenable files display on my desktop as the 'PDF icon' and the one of the phone bill that I can open displays as a 'Preview Icon' (as they all should).
Hope this all makes sense and may point to something further?
Once again - thanks for the help!

  • Firefox will not open Adobe PDF files on my mini Mac (I have reader x and the latest Quicktime versions)

When I try to download a pdf file sometimes an error message appears and states can't down load file, Quicktime may need an extension. Other times the page just stays blank - nothing happens.
This happens very frequently. I can open some pdf files in Firefox. The problem appears with downloading.
I have the same software in Safari and Firefox and I do not have this problem with Safari - I can download PDFs in that browser

What I did was to reinstall/upgrade Adobe Reader, then there is an new option showing up in Firefox > options > applications > Portable Document Format(PDF), which is "use adobe acrobat in Firefox". Choose this one, then I managed again to open PDF files with Adobe Reader internally in Firefox.

  • Reinstall of Reader - Cannot open Adobe PDF files

I uninstalled Reader thinking I would just open everything in Acrobat.  WRONG! I reinstalled Reader but cannot open any of my Adobe PDF files.  What do I do?

    Claudio,
Windows 7 Professional. Latest Reader Version was uninstalled and then reinstalled. No error messages.  But a window opens up that says:
Attachment: 8x8fax.pdf from Inbox - [email address removed] - Microsoft Outlook
Would you like to open or save to your computer?
Clicking on the Open Box does nothing. I can forward to another computer and open the pdf from there but that is a pain.

  • How to Open Adobe *pdf Files Hyperlink in New Tab

(Amongst all the extensions I have installed are Session Manager and Tabs Mix Plus, either of which might have bearing on this question. Session Manager is set to restore the tabs still open upon closing the previous session.)
When Firefox is closed, clicking a web hyperlink in a pdf file opened in Adobe Acrobat will open the browser, but that page will displace whatever was visible in the last session's focused tab (the one which would have focus if the browser was reopened normally).
If Firefox is already open and I'm using Acrobat externally the same happens -- the hyperlink' s page opens in the tab with focus, displacing whatever other webpage is displayed theree.
If by chance a pdf is open in a browser tab (FF is configured to open pdfs in a tab from *within* the browser) clicking a hyperlink in that pdf will open the new site in that current tab.
What do I set to get external Acrobat to open in a *new* tab when clicking a webpage hyperlink in a pdf?
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened

    Check your browser preferences.

Marc, you might want to post this question in the Basis forum, or ask a moderator to move this thread. You'll most likely get more qualified responses there.
    SAP NetWeaver Application Server
Also you might want to provide more details as to what kind of document you're trying to open (e.g. in what transaction). And, instead of posting the pictures, just specify the message text and/or message class and number (e.g. V1 100). The error messages are unreadable on your pictures.
And, better yet, ask your manager to get a qualified Basis admin.

  • Preview can't open any pdf file

PDF documents are greyed out in the open menu.
Setting Preview as the "open this document with..." app in the get info window gives the message that "it's not known if this application can open Adobe PDF files"
At the same time, Safari started crashing on being asked to open a PDF file.
I've reinstalled Safari, grabbed Preview from a Time Machine backup from when it worked, reinstalled the developer tools in case they wrote over webkit, trashed all preferences and rebooted. No joy.
I looked at the document types list in Preview's info.plist and the entry for com.adobe.pdf is in there. I've opened an eps file in Preview and saved it as a pdf; I can then open that pdf in Acrobat, but not in Preview (even though it appears in the "recent documents" list.)
    What am I missing?

Create a new admin user account, log into it, and see if the problem persists. If not, report back. If so, download and install the 10.6.3 COMBO update. If that doesn't fix the problem, reinstall SL, and if fixed, run Software Update until you're back to 10.6.3. If still no go, run this one-line Terminal command and restart:
*/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user*

  • I cannot open some pdf files online with Reader XI (like sample forms in Help section).

I cannot open some pdf files online with Reader XI (like sample forms in Help section or IRS.gov or credit card statements).  I have uninstalled Reader XI, cleaned and reinstalled.  I have no problem right-clicking and downloading and then viewing the files.  No problem viewing acrobat files.  I'm runnnig Windows 7,  IE9.     I can acces them through Chrome.

    RESOLVED
I found two suspect programs that were installed within the last 48-hrs that may have caused the problem
    1) - Libre Office - latest update.  This is a fork of Open Office.  (unlikely)
    2) - ManyCam video manipulation software  (likely)
Following info here, I opted to try to open an Adobe PDF file that was on my hard drive.  When I did, it refused and IE10 gave me an ActiveX error (AHA!!).   When I checked the installation of ManyCam, it had installed a version of DirectX that may have over-written the resident versions or disabled them somehow.
I uninstalled ManyCam but left Libre Office's update in place, then I ran a system restore from a point 24-hrs before the installations.
    This resolved the problem 100%.
So, the suggestion here is that there may be one or more program in the wild that is interupting the ActiveX or DirectX systems.  They may be running or installing an older version.  In this case it appears the handlers were broken.
Once the system restore had completed I was able to open Adobe PDF files within my IE10 browser from the Internet as well as open PDF files from my hard drive.
Note that this same issue also clearned up a problem I was having with the Comodo Dragon web browser, which is a fork of the Chrome project.  Once I eliminated the suspect program and ran the system restore all was well.  In the instance of the Comodo browser it was unable to open or reach anything - dead white screen below the menu bar.
So my suggestion would be to take an inventory of recent program installations, remove/uninstall them, run system restore from a date before the suspect programs were added, and see what happens.  In my case that fixed the problem.

Anyway, we have the same question.
How do we control whether PDF launches internal to

This is what I would like to as well. I often have a lot of pdf files I need to open and then save to my hard drive. When I click on a pdf file on a website Safari opens it and then I need to right click in the document to open it with Adobe. How can I get it to open in Adobe the first time without having to right click after it opens in Safari?
