Importing Outlook calendar into iCal

I am relatively new to Apple and one of the few things that is taking the gloss off an otherwise happy experience of working in this new environment is my inability to import my Outlook (2003) Calendar from the work office into iCal on my home iMac. I would be grateful if anyone could tell me if this is possible, and how it might be done so that I do not overwrite the appointments I already have entered in iCal. Thanks.

Don't blame Apple for this. Blame Microsoft. ALL of Microsoft's products (Outlook, Windows Media Player, Microsoft Office, etc.) were created in proprietary & closed formats, designed to keep you "locked in" to Microsoft and Windows as long as possible. Microsoft makes it nearly impossible to move any of your data out of their products and into a competitor's products.
Apple, on the other hand, has designed all of their products with open standards and open formats, so your data is never "locked in" like it is with Microsoft.
In the meantime, luckily you can use the product Outlook2Mac to get your data over from Outlook's calendar to iCal.

  • How to import Lotus Notes or Outlook calendar into iCal ???

Is there a way to import calendar data from either Lotus Notes or Outlook calendar into iCal ? Is there a generic data type file that I must first get the calendar file into before importing into iCal ?

The file must be .ics. I used to simply use Missing Sync to get my calendars synced up, however it's not yet supported in Leopard.
So, in order to get my office Outlook data over to Ical, I simply used the following "macro"
    http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=136194
Simply follow the instructions...it worked well for me. all my work data got transferred over.

  • IMPORTING OUTLOOK CONTACTS INTO ICAL, ENTOURAGE, ETC TO SYNC WITH NEW 3G

How can I do this? What type of file extension do I need to export from windows outlook to be able to get the contacts info into my new Iphone 3G. Thanks for your assistance.

iTunes on the PC can load contacts directly into iPhone.
Or you can export vcards, copy to Mac, load into "Address Book", then sync into iPhone with Mac iTunes. Outlook only has an option to export vcards 1-at-a-time. There are several 3rd party programs for the PC that can export all-at-once.

  • How to import calendar into iCal?

I am trying to import a calendar into iCal. Here is my AppleScript:
    set theFile to "Sample.ics"
    tell application "iCal"
    open theFile
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
    tell process "iCal"
    tell window "Add events"
    click pop up button 1
click menu item "New Calendar" of menu 1 of pop up button 1
    click button "OK"
    end tell
    end tell
    end tell
I have specified a full path for theFile in the actual script. Here is what happens when I run it:
The iCal icon starts jumping and the script just stays running. If I hunt around I can find the "Add events" window and it is just sitting there waiting for interaction. If I click the pop up button and select New Calendar then click OK the file imports like I wanted and my script errors out saying it can't find the "Add Events" window. Clearly my script loads the file into iCal fine. Then it has problems. Here are my guesses as to what goes wrong:
    1. maybe the "Add event" window is modal and iCal won't respond to the script until the window is dealt with.
    2. maybe the pop up button is not a pop up button and is some other UI element .
    3. maybe there is an issue with focus
    4. maybe I have no clue, should stop speculating, and someone will help me.

I'm stuck too. Although the Accessibility Inspector describes the “Add events” window as belonging to iCal, the script seems not to see that window as a UI element of iCal:
    tell application "iCal"
    activate -- essential statement!
    open theFile
    end tell
tell application "System Events" to tell process "iCal"
    return UI elements
    end tell
    --> {window "iCal" of application process "iCal" of application "System Events", menu bar 1 of application process "iCal" of application "System Events"}
It doesn't even seem possible to bypass the process by using the keystroke command.

  • Importing Now Up To Date Calendar into iCal

I have been using NUTD for ten years. It is now starting to crash often with the latest OS software. So I would like to import my entire NUTD calendar into iCal. However, I cannot figure out how to do this. I have looked at discussions on the subject, but they all seem to be several years old. Any new ideas on doing this? I have a Bed and Breakfast and need the past ten years calendar info, plus the reservation info that goes out three year from now. So I need to import 13 years worth of calendar data.

I just did a full migration from Now Up-to-Date to iCal and was successful using a tip obtained elsewhere. The key is to pass the data through Excel and Palm Desktop. Now can't export vCal yet and iCal won't import tab delimited text. However, Palm Desktop can import tab-delimted text and export vCal.
I don't think you can successfuly create multiple iCal calendars from the Now categories going through Palm Desktop; I didn't try that. To make sure it worked out, I did it using multiple export/imports doing one Now category at a time by passing it through Excel. Here's a summary of the steps:
    1. Export your date rage from Now in tab-delimited format.
    2. Open the export file in Excel, sort by category.
    3. Extract all entries for each category into separate workbooks, save each as tab-delimited text file format.
    4. Open Palm Desktop and create a new calendar for the category (e.g business, personal, special events, etc.) Save it in a temp place like your desktop.
    5. Import the text file to the new Palm Desktop calendar
    6. Export from Palm Desktop to a vCal file
    7. Create a new calendar in iCal for the category to be imported
    8. Import the vCal file into that calendar.
Repeat steps 4-8 for each Now category.
There were some anomolies I couldn't explain (like some single-day all-day events becoming two-day events in iCal), but I just cleaned those up manually.
Repeating events in the Now Calendar will become multiple single events in iCal. Also, if you have any commas in titles or notes, the process of passing through Excell wil put " " around those entries in iCal. If this bothers you, you could pass the saved Excel text files (from step 3) through a text editor (Text Wrangler works best, TextEdit should do it also) to delete the quotes if you want.

  • Outlook calendar to iCal

I use a PC at work with Outlook, and would like to import my calendar to iCal at home...How do i do this? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    I found this link.
    http://sheepnut.org/weblog/outlook-to-ical-converter/
When I tried the software with a downloaded Outlook calendar .csv file it created a calendar in iCal but there were NO entries. When I opened the .csv file with Excel or Numbers it looks fine and correct but the conversion into iCal did not work for me.
I am still looking. Have you had any luck?

  • Problem importing ics files into iCal

Importing ics files into iCal is the problem, but first here is the background on why I'm trying to import.
I have an iMac and iPad, and recently changed my iPhone 3G for an iPhone 4S.  Having got the iPhone 4S I have now set up all my devices to use iCloud.  In moving iCal to iCloud an extra calendar was created "automatically" in iCal, called "Me".  This "Me" calendar contains a partial duplicate of my main calendar, which is called "My Calendar".  In fact, some of the events from "My Calendar" seem to have been moved to "Me", and some have been duplicated.
It seems as it I now need to merge the "Me" and "My calendar" calendars to get back to where I was.
I have tried to export one of the calendars and then re-import it into the other.  The export seems to work fine, but every single time I try to re-import the ics file iCal crashes at the end of the import process, and the import is not completed.
Can anyone help?  This has been driving me absolutely crazy today!
I even tried manually moving events from one calendar to another, but they reappeared.  I think this was because my iPhone/iPad were re-syncing via iCloud and overwriting the changes I had just made.
I don't mind if I end up with one calendar with duplicates as I can remove them with iCal Dupe Deleter.
Or if there are any other alternative solutions I'd love to hear them!
    All help greatly appreciated!
(P.S. Is it just me, or is Apple software slowly getting as unreliable as Windows used to be?  I get more problems with software updates now than when I first got a Mac about 8 years ago!)

Not a great answer but I dragged the attachment either to the finder - app - ical or the icon. It placed it on the calendar. I clicked in and accepted. So, no auto populate. Need to drag and drop. So glad I paid the 20 bucks to upgrade to 10.8

  • I am trying to download a calendar into ical and keep getting this message-Some of the events in this calendar have alerts that open files or applications.  What am I doing wrong???

I am trying to download a calendar into ical and keep getting this message-Some of the events in this calendar have alerts that open files or applications. Remove alerts or cancel
What am I doing wrong or missing??

I have this same problem in October of 2013. I am unable to import .ics files into Lion that I exported from my Snow Leopard MacBookPro without losing all of my future events (which all have alerts attached). All of the events from BEFORE today's date are successfully importing, presumably because they are no longer expected to trigger alerts via Apple Mail. After my first unsuccessful attempt, I learned that iCal was communicating with iCloud by default. I have since turned off iCloud, but I have not found a solution to the problem. Harvey

  • Possible to import google cal into iCal?

Is there a way to import data from google calendars into iCal?

Yes, it is possible and you do not need a third party program to do it. You need to "subscribe" to your Google calendar from within iCal. The address that you need to provide to iCal for the subscription to work, is available from the Google calendar page. Click on the downward-facing triangle next to your calendar name on the left of the screen, then click on Calendar Settings. At the bottom of the screen that pops up, click on the ICAL button in the Private Address area. This will give you the private URL of your calendar, which is what you need to use in iCal "subscribe" function.
In iCal, you can specify how often you want to "import" the data from the Google calendar you are subscribed to.

  • Anyone have a method of importing national holidays into iCal?

I am looking for method to import national holidays into iCal.

    Jimmy,
    Try iCalShare.
You can also try using iCal>Calendar>Find Subscriptions... I did notice a "Page Not Found" when using that method, but it has been working in the past.

  • Viewing/sharing outlook calendars in ical

I am trying to view a colleagues outlook calendar in ical. I've gone through the process of sharing and adding via the outlook web app and i can see their calendar fine via web browser. I'm struggling to see it in iCal however. I go to add the calendar to my iMac calendar via  calendar > preferences > accounts > delegation. I type in their email address and it pops up as they're a contact/we're on the same network. I add them and then in the delegation list they appear as 'greyed out'. I've gone through this process with all of my colleagues, some it works for and some it doesn't. Sometimes some of them are greyed out and other times they are there and let me tick 'show'.
All calendars are visible and working via outlook web app. Only some let me see them in iCal.
This is very frustrating! Anyone have any solutions?

  • Import a Calendar into Apple Calendar

I downloaded a calendar in "ics" format from my school district website. How do I import that calendar into my calendar app on my iPhone?

    Hi Frameguy,
It looks like you will want to add the calendar directly from the server rather than downloading it first.
From the iPhone User Guide - For iOS 7.1 Software
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/#iphone
Subscribe to a calendar. Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, then tap Add Account. Tap Other, then tap Add Subscribed Calendar. Enter the server and filename of the .ics file to subscribe to. You can also subscribe to an iCalendar (.ics) calendar published on the web, by tapping a link to the calendar.
    Best Regards,
