Importing photo album from older library into new library

Hi,  I have thousands of pictures and my iPhoto app is starting to stall and freeze.  I'd like to reduce the size of the library by creating a new one ( which I've done) and then moving my picture albums from the older library into the new library.  I can't seem to find any info on how to do this.  I'd appreciate any information that you might have.  Thank you.

5k images is a tiny Library. There's a reason it's slow. I would try rebuilding it:
Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:
Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Import photo's from camera has destroyed iPhoto library

I upgraded to iPhoto '08 a couple of days ago, and everything worked fine. But, after importing a few photo's from a Nikon point and shoot just now, it appears that I've lost all the other photo's in the library. The photo's that I just imported are now the only ones in the library. Thousands of images have just vanished.
I've checked in the iPhoto Library package and it looks ilke the files are still on disk. I've also tried rebuilding the library and fixing permissions. No luck.
I don't have a recent backup of the iPhoto Library, and I'm not willing to lose several months worth of photo's to go back to an old backup. So what are my options?
I've copied the iPhoto Library to another location and I can create a new library and import everything from the old Originals folder, but what happens to all of the edits I made to these photo's. As far as I can tell they're stored in the Modified folder. Does this mean that I either have to import Orignials and lose the edits, or import the Modified folder and lose the ability to go back to the originals?
This really *****. You would think something as simple as this would have been caught in QA. How did this software ever get to market with a bug like this in it? I'll be able to get my photo's back, although not without a considerable amount of hassle, but what about the thousands of folks out there with their family albums in iPhoto who are about to lose everything as soon as they connect a camera to their Mac. I doubt they'll be thinkging very highly of Apple, that's for sure.

I just did a bit of investigating and things are getting very weird.
iPhoto '08 didn't crash when I did the import, howere I did notice something odd. I store my photographs on an external hard drive and alias to the iPhoto Library from the Pictures folder. After I imported the recent photo's I noticed that my external hard drive was mounted twice in the finder. I unmounted it thinking that it was just an anomoly.
The external drive is called Galaxy1TB. To check to see whether there were multiple libraries on my Mac I did a search in Spotlight for "iPhoto Library." Two showed up, the backup I just made and one located in /Volumes/Galaxy1TB 1/Pictures. Note the fact that it's called "Galaxy1TB 1" and not "Galaxy1TB" even though it shows up in Finder as Galaxy1TB.
Using Terminal I did a cd of /Volumes and it contains Galaxy1TB and Galaxy1TB 1. Galaxy1TB 1 is the volume that is visible through Finder, and it has the iPhoto Library containing all of my old photo's. But, I checked this library, by looking through the package in Finder, and it does not contain the most recent photo import I did from the Nikon point and shoot camera. When I cd into /Volumes/Galaxy1TB there is a single directory called Pictures and it contains another directory called iPhoto Library. Navigating through the various directories in this version of the iPhoto Library I came across the recent Nikon imports.
It seems to me that, when I did the import from the Nikon, iPhoto, which was not started at the time, mounted a new Volume called Galaxy1TB (somehow the existing Volume was renamed Galaxy1TB 1) and it created a new iPhoto Library on the volume and imported the images into it. Now, when I start iPhoto, it is using this doppelganger iPhoto Library rather than the original one.
I suspect that if I restart the Mac, Galaxy1TB will revert to its original state and iPhoto will pick up the correct library. But I don't know what will happen to the library on the currently mounted Galaxy1TB. If it vanishes I will lose the photo's I just imported. I guess there is a possibility that the doppelganger Galaxy1TB will be mounted and I'll lose everything on my external hard drive! I wonder whether it's safe to rm /Volumes/Galaxy11TB through Terminal before restarting the Mac?
Anyway, any thoughts would be appreciated. This thing has got me very confused. I'm going to export the photo's I recently imported, so that I'll have copies when (if?) the library goes away after a restart. But if anyone can give me some assurance that I'm not going to lose the contents of my external drive after I restart, I'd appreciate it.

  • Transferring albums from older iPod to newer Mini Mac

How can I transfer some albums from my wife’s old iPod 20 GB model A1059 to our newer Mini Mac. Most of the older albums were transfered to the new computer, but somehow I must have deleted many of the albums, which are still on the old iPod.  How do I transfer those albums?  I don’t want to mess up what I currently have in my iTunes.  Any help or direction would be appreciated.

    Hhi there Vince1942,
It sounds like you have media on your iPod that you want to transfer to your Mac mini. You can use this article to transfer your iTunes Store purchases over:
Re-download or transfer your iTunes Store purchases from an iPhone, iPad or iPod to a computer
Keep this in mind for media from other sources:
This feature works only for content bought from the iTunes Store. Any items that you imported from audio CDs or received from other sources won't copy from your device to the iTunes library. However, all podcasts from your device's Podcasts app and copies of all PDFs and books from your device's iBooks app will transfer to the computer. Learn how to transfer media to your iTunes library.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • How to delete a photo album from iPhone using a new hard drive & a later version of iTunes

I'm using the same computer but with a new hard drive and a later version of iTunes. I previously loaded a photo folder from my PC to my iPhone, but I inadvertently did it twice, giving each folder a different name -- "Photo Library," and "Widget Photo Folder." Of course, I also have the "Camera Roll" folder on my iPhone. I now want to delete either the "Photo Library" or the "Widget Photo Folder" from my iPhone. On iTunes in the Photo tab, I don't have the option of deselecting the folder in my PC that I previously synced. Apparently, iTunes recognizes that the privious sync was not done with the new hard drive? How, then, do I remove one of the photo folders from the iPhone?

You CANNOT delete photo album.  ALL pics synced to iphone are oin photo library.  Those exact same photos, NOT duplicates, can be accessed from the individual albums.
This is how Apple handles photos.
Just as a song is in a playlist and in the library ( there is only one song, simply two ways to access it), photos are in the library and the same photos can be accessed from the album.

  • HT4236 importing photo albums from device to computer

Can you import complete albums under the album name from the device (ipad) to the computer (imac)?

See this article, referred to in the article you attached above:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083
In particular, note these two paragraphs (pay particluar attention to "Camera Roll or Saved Photos" in the first):
After your photos have been imported from your Camera Roll or Saved Photos, you can use iTunes to sync them back to your device.
    Additional Information
You can import only photo and video content taken with the built-in camera or captured on the device. You cannot import photo or video content synced from iTunes.

  • Error when importing photos/videos from iphone 4 into Picassa.....

When attempting to import photos and videos from iphone 4 into Picassa (v3.8) I get the following error message:
"An error has occurred while attempting to import. Either the source is unavailable or the destination is full or read only. (1)"
Any thoughts? I know this is an iphone specific issue as I was successfully able to import from another camera.
P.S Quicktime up to date and quicktime movies checked in Picassa.

I have the same issue. It started only after the most recent iPhone update though, leading me to think it's the phone, not iPhoto.
The pictures that do import are streaked/blurry with terrrible colour. I can still send them via email but they're smaller files.
Does anyone know another way to get my full-res pictures off my iPhone?
[edit] I found out that I could use Apple's Image Capture software, which worked like a charm but the pictures themselves are a mess. I'll have to try resetting.

  • How to load music and apps from previous library into new library?

I recently downloaded a virus into my computer. I took it in and had it taken care of. I lost my iTunes library when they flushed out my hard drive. Is there anyway to get the music and apps I had in my old library, and add them to my new one? I appreciate any suggestions. Thank you!

I hope you had a backup! If you don't, the music and apps files are gone, along with digital photos, that copy of your resume, and any other important files that were on that hard drive that got erased.
The apps, you can download again for free since the software license allows that. The music, royalties are paid for each download so you only get one download, and are expected to make backups.
Do you at least have your songs on an ipod? You can use the transfer purchases feature after you have installed itunes again and authroized it in the itunes store.

  • Help with Importing Photo Albums from Iphoto

I have created a bunch of albums in iphoto and wish to transfer them to my ipod. However, when i go to the photos tab of itunes when my ipod is plugged in and i try to select Sync from Iphoto it says that i have 0 photos in iphoto. i have tried selecting individual folders of photos to import and that works just fine, but i want to be able to select the albums that i already created in iphoto.
    thanks for your help

Apologies, you're right, it should be albumdata.xml.
Have a read of this thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=778068&tstart=0
About 2/3'rds of the way down, DaveE has the following post:
    - View your albumdata.xml file in some text editor, like TextEdit.
    - Do a Find (cmd f) for "List of Keywords"
    - The XML under that looks kind of like this:
    <dict>
    <key>1</key>
    <string>Favorite</string>
    <key>6</key>
    <string>Birthday</string>
    <key>3</key>
    </dict>
You will probably have more keywords, this is just an example. But see the format - everything that has <something> ends with </something>.
When I had the problem, the example above looked like:
    <dict>
    <key>1</key>
    <string>Favorite <key>6</key>
    <string>Birthday</string>
    <key>3</key>
    </dict>
Notice the line return and </string> are missing for "Favorite". This happened to one of my keywords, and I don't know what caused it, but I deleted that keyword (and the one after it) from within iPhoto's preferences, and typed them in again.
The problem went away. Maybe some bogus character got into the keywords to make the XML go bad.
So try to use the method above to identify which keyword might have a problem, rather than go on a witch hunt and waste a lot of time. Of course, your problem could be different from mine entirely, but my iLife apps had the same problem you described.
Try it and see if it helps.

  • Problem importing old iphoto library into new computer

SO I ORIGIONALLY WROTE THIS TOPIC:
"Ok so I just bought a new macbook pro with iphoto 08 and i want to transfer my pictures from my old Imac with im guessing iphoto 06 and all the albums to my new computer. How do i do this. I tried it once but i did it wrong because i only got the pictures over there but no albums so i deleted them on the new computer and am ready to try again"
    THEN I GOT THIS RESPONSE:
Quit iPhoto, copy the entire iPhoto library as a single entity from the old computer into the pictures folder on the new computer and launch iPhoto on the new computer - it will convert (a one way conversion) the library as needed and you will be set.
SO I DID THAT AND THE PHOTOS ARE THERE ON THE HARD DRIVE BUT WHEN I OPEN IPHOTO THERE IS NOTHING THERE
    PLEASE HELP

    Nick:
Have you checked the size of the copied library to make sure it's a valid one. To be sure you're opening the correct library launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and, when asked, select the option to choose a library. Navigate to your pictures folder and select the library to copied over from your old iMac.
If your sure that's the library from the old iMac and it doesn't indicate any photos try the following in order as needed:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select all options.
2 - rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: It may take some time to create the new library if you have a lot of photos.
3 - start over with a new library and import the Originals folder from your original library as follows:
Creating a new library while preserving the Events from the original library.
Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
Open the library package like this.
Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
Drag the Originals folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open Photo window
This will create a new library with the same Events as the original library if you have the Finder checkbox unchecked in the Events preference pane.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Can't get songs from my iPod into the library on my new mac

I recently had to get a new hard-drive on my dell laptop, and iTunes was uninstalled from the computer. When I re-installed iTunes, my iPod was not being recognized by the laptop, so none of my songs on my iPod were in the library anymore.
Now I have a new MacBook, and my iPod is being recognized, but I can't get most of my songs from my iPod into the library in iTunes.
I'm sure there is an easy solution, but I can't figure it out!
    Any help is much appreciated!!!

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. This is just a small selection of what's available, you can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Senuti Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
iPodDisk PPC Mac Only (experimental version available for Intel Macs)
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod

  • Re importing photos, album, etc from an external drive

Recently my I photo library (incl. over 6.000 photos, books already ordered and others still working on, slide shows etc,) was gone. Thanks to the advise I got from Terence  (apparantly I deleted my library, and  I did not have any back up) - buying an app FileSalvage - I got my photos, albums, etc  back on an external hard drive.  I would like to know the exact procedure to re import photos and  books to the I photo library.
    Thanks.

If you have recovered the actual photo files then simply make a new Library:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
And import them: File -> Add to Library

  • How to import iPhoto album from CD (not entire library)?

I am trying to set up a workflow where multiple people in multiple cities can export an album from iPhoto and send the CD to me. Once I receive it, I'll import it into my iPhoto library. I would like to import it directly in to Aperture though. What is the best way to do this?
Should I import into iPhoto then have my library linked to Aperture or should I keep everything in Aperture? I do not need to edit -- only catalog based on the keywords each person attaches to each photo. I don't think that exporting the photos by themselves (instead of the album they are in) gives me the comments field so I would lose the comments. That is why I need the entire album instead.
I hope this makes sense. Please let me know if you have any more questions.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Terence,
Yes, they are using v7. The thing is, since I posted the question, I found that doing an album burn (not a file export) will save the data, but in a file other than the image file. When you mount the CD you just burned to in iPhoto, the data shows up in the comments field. When you import the data though, the comments don't get imported.
I found a third party utility called iPhoto Library Manager that takes care of this. It allows you to do a lot of stuff like imports, library merges, etc. that iPhoto doesn't do. Very handy little app, but I think iPhoto should at least allow you to import an album from another system with all the info intact (especially since it exports it into the xml file included with the photos).

  • How to export a photo album from my iphone that was previously imported from another mac?

Again, I'd like to export a photo album from my iphone to my mac. What is unique here is that the album was originally imported from another mac to my iphone. When I open iphoto on my mac it will import everything else but this particular album. It's from my old iphone that crashed but I was lucky enough to export the pics from my old phone to another mac and then import them to my new iphone.
