Importing photos from a PC and creating new library in iPhoto

I recently purchased a MacBook and I would like to transfer all of my photos from my external hard drive to the Mac. I had been using a PC prior to my MacBook purchase, so I am accustomed to organizing all of my pictures on my PC in one "My Pictures" folder with several subfolders within that large folder (e.g. "Landscape Photos," "Portraits," etc.):
1. How should I transfer my photos onto the Mac? Do I copy and paste them into the "Pictures" folder, and then import them into iPhoto? If so, won't that create duplicate copies on my hard drive?
2. I understand that going forward, when I upload pictures from my camera onto the computer (using iPhoto), the pictures will be uploaded into the "Original" folder, all lumped together with every picture that is uploaded. But for instance, if I upload a "landscape" photo, how do I put that in my "Landscape" folder, which is the same folder I was using to classify landscape pictures on my PC? Or does this "folder" classification now go away since iPhoto just organizes it?
3. I use Photoshop to edit certain pictures. If I revise a picture, in which folder am I supposed to save it? Does it become a file "Modified" folder? How would I access this photo to print out at an external photo lab?
I would definitely appreciate any insight from anyone....thanks in advance for your help!!

Hello and welcome to the discussions!
Many of you 'switchers' are having problems with how iPhoto works, and how it differs from other programs you are used to with PCs. Most of you do all of your organizing yourself, but with iPhoto, you can just concentrate on working with your photos and being creative, letting iPhoto worry about what photo is in which folder. Here is an explanation of how iPhoto works: Using iPhoto, from iPhoto Help
iPhoto is designed to let your do all your arranging/naming/organizing into albums from WITHIN iPhoto itself. You should not be tinkering around in any of your iPhotoLibrary Folders outside of iPhoto: Don't Tamper
Another good explanation of iPhoto and how it works is in this thread
And, here is a discussion thread on migrating from Picasa to iPhoto: iPhoto structure
Be sure to read Terence's excellent explanation.
Finally, for your questions:
(1)You should be able to get your photos into iPhoto by opening up iPhoto and dragging your photo folders into the main window of iPhoto. iPhoto will create a film roll for each folder. If the folder has subfolders, film rolls will be created for them also. By naming the folders when you import them, you will be able to keep the same organization in your film rolls. iPhoto automatically stores the photos in iPhotoLibrary folder in Pictures folder. You do not need to put them into Pictures yourself.
You need to learn about iPhoto's album system, where you create albums in the Source pane and selectively put your photos into them. These albums actually contain aliases of the photos, not the photos themselves, so a photo's alias can be placed into many albums, but the photo can be in only one film roll.
(2) If you don't want your photos downloaded from your camera in a lump sum, use ImageCapture (in Applications) to selectively download your photos into separate folders on your desktop, and then import each folder into iPhoto where each folder becomes a separate film roll. You can either keep the original downloaded photos on your computer, or you can delete the downloaded folders after you have imported the photos into iPhoto.
(3) You can set your 'Edit' preferences in iPhoto to open up PhotoShop for all editing, and you save the photo back to iPhoto afterwards. It will be in the same film roll.
Post back if you have more questions.

  • Is it possible to import photos from a disk and retain the same order?

Is i possible to import photos from a disk and retain the same order they appear on the disk?  When I import them, the come out in random order.

When first imported the photos will be sorted in the Event chronologically. On the disk they well be sorted by the Finder and that's usually alphanumerically by file name. So select the photos in the event and type Commnad+N.  That will create a new album at the left with the photos in it. Then go to the View ➙ Sort Photo menu and select "By Title".  That should give you the same order as you view the photos on the disk via the Finder.

  • How do I import photos from external hard drive to iCloud library?

I have saved many photos to an external hard drive for security. I would like to store at least some of them in iCloud so I have direct access from Photos. Is this possible please?

how do I import photos from external hard drive to iCloud library?
Just like you'd do it with iPhoto.  Drag the photos or folder of photos into the open Photos Library window or onto the Photos icon in the Dock.
If you have the iCloud Photo Library activated in Photos the new photos will be copied to the online iCloud Photo Library along with the rest of the photos in your library.  Remember, with the iCloud Photo Liberty it's all the photos or none.  You may have to purchase additional iCloud space to store all of your photos.

  • Lately I've been importing photos from my iPhone and when I attempt to edit them they seem to disappear.  Some reappper as a photo stream pic (some as the edited version and some not).  But they no longer appear as a recent import.  Lots more happens

Lately I've been importing photos from my iPhone to iPhoto and when I attempt to edit them they seem to disappear.  Some reappper as a photo stream pic (some as the edited version and some not).  But they no longer appear as a recent import.  Lots more happens and I'm wondering if it's because I have a 5-year old Mac book or iPhoto is having issues.  I'm not happy with disappearing photos especially after I've deleted them from my iphone after importing them to my macbook.
Has anyone experienced similar difficulties and what can I do?

Remember: we cannot see your machine. There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 8 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS.  So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Basic things like :
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For instance: 'iPhoto won't export' is best explained by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted?
    - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Can I import photos from my mac to my new ipad?

I don't now how to import photos from my mac to ipad. The video tutorial says to use itunes, but I can't figure out how to do it.

  • I have updated my iPhone4 to ios5. tried using the photo lib, camera roll and creating new albums. I have also transferred photos to the new album and it great. Is there a way to delete a photo in a single album and not everywhere?

    Hoping to get an answer

You can sync photos from your computer via iTunes, and each folder that you sync will get its own album : syncing photos. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next sync.
In terms of albums that you create directly on the iPad no, effectively you are just creating pointers to the photos in those new albums, so if you delete the original photo you will therefore also be deleting all pointers to it.
You could consider a third-party photo management app instead e.g. Photo Manager Pro

  • How do I get Photo Stream to only import photos from my phone and not push photos to my phone.

    Hi
Just purchased an Imac (first time mac user) and imported all my photos from my PC.  I have been using photo stream on my phone and ipad and like it.  The problem is, as far as I can tell, that I have added thousands of photos to the Imac and it now consider those to be new additions.  It is sharing those photos to my phone and Ipad and filling both up very quickly.  Is there a way that I can only stream photos from the phone to Iphoto on my imac and not from the imac to the phone?  I realize that in 30 days, this should correct itself, but for the time being it is a huge hassle.  Im sure there is some setting in iphoto that will alleviate my problem

    If you have a mac....
    launch iPhoto
click the word "iPhoto" beside the apple, and select "preferences / photo stream"
    what synces, is listed here
uncheck what you desire, and simply close iPhoto.  It will save the changes
    Also......
Click the apple / system prefences / iCloud - if you wish to stop "photo stream" completely, you can uncheck it here.

  • I have the original ipad. I can't delete my photos from the ipad, and the new itunes update does not give me the option to sync photos. What do I do?

I have the orignal ipad. I synced all my photos from my computer onto. Now I don't have enough storage on my ipad so I want to delete these photos. When I try from my ipad it only gives me the option to share or copy, NOT DELETE. I went to resync my ipad to itunes, after I downloaded the new version and now it doesn't give me an option to sync photos. How do I get rid of them?

    Wow.  That's weird.
Is your iPad jailbroke?  If it is, all bets are off.  If it is not jailbroke, keep reading.
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore, go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.

  • Importing photos from iPad to PC after new setup of computer.

I hat To setup my PC and want To import my pictures from iPad back To the PC. But iTunes tells me, that my iPad is still connected to another mediathek library. Do U have any idea how I can get back my photos from iPad tommy computer?
    Thanks in advance
    Matze

Copying photos off the iPad (and iPhone and iPod Touch) is done outside of iTunes. For photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites then see this page for copying them off.
For photos that were originally synced from a computer you will need a third-party app such as Simple Transfer which can copy them off via your wifi network. But as photos are 'optimised' when they are synced to the iPad, any that you then copy back to a computer may not be exactly the same as they originally were on your computer.

  • I tried to create new library, now iPhoto can't find them

i had so many photos in my iphoto library and it was taking forever to load up, so i wanted to create multiple libraries.
i first tried the following protocol from the help but couldn't find the 'Create Library' command in the toolbar.
    1.Quit iPhoto.
2.Rename your current iPhoto Library folder in the Finder or move it to a new location on your hard disk.
    3.Open iPhoto.
    4.Click Create Library.
5.Type a name and choose a location for your new photo library.
    6.Click Save.
then i manually tried to rename my original iPhoto Library file in the Pictures folder, and create a new folder where i dropped all the photos from 2006 and 2007 so i could just boot from my recent photos. i've learned since that tinkering with files manually in the iPhoto Library is a no-no, but how do i go back? i moved all of the folders with year names 2002-2007 back under the folder iPhoto Library, but i now have two folders. one called iPhoto Library and the other iPhoto Library 2. they are both within the Pictures folder and they each have copies dir.data, iphoto.db, iphoto.ipspot, iphotolock.data, etc.
    Help! please!
    thanks
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

If iPhoto does not recognize either library, then the data files may be messed up. I would create a new library and import the photos from the old library. This will get you back in the running.
    Close iPhoto
Rename your messed up iPhoto Library to "iPhoto Library_old"
Drag this library to your desktop
Hold down the Option key and launch iPhoto
This is the window you will get
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library
Once this new empty library is open it is time to import the images from your old library
    Go to File>add to library
Navigate to the old library on your desktop and highlight it in the window, then click the "import" button.
iPhoto will start importing the images from your old library
    This is what to expect:
Your images will be imported in nice dated rolls. (make sure your view is set to sort by rolls to see it) There are a couple of caveats to this. You will get rolls named "Originals" These rolls will contain your video clips and your original images that you had edited. If you had RAW files they would be in those rolls too (I don't do RAW, so I don't know for sure) Delete what you don't want from those rolls. You will also get the jpeg pointer files to your video clips imported. They will just be jpegs and will not point to the video clips anymore as iPhoto made new ones when the clips were imported again. You can delete those. they should be in a roll right next to the newly imported video clips so they are not hard to find. The thumbnail files don't get imported as iPhoto makes new ones when the images are imported.
Once all you images have been imported, check through the library and make sure everything looks ok.
You can now start making your Albums, and do your keywords or any other organizational steps.
You can also delete the old library on the desktop.
It is also a good time to backup this new library to CD/DVD by burning the iPhoto LIbrary folder in the Finder, or copying the iPhoto Library folder to an external drive formatted for Macs, or copying the iPhoto LIbrary folder to an iPod.
    Good luck!

  • Extracting pages from PDF file and creating new subfile PDF

I am a .NET C# developer looking into creating an app that extracts a subset of pages from a PDF document, say, given a start and end page number, and possibly creating a new PDF file with that subset of pages.  Is there a convenient way of doing this ?

Ok. The Acrobat SDK is not directly going to help, because the Acrobat SDK requires Acrobat, and Acrobat is not for server use.
Adobe have the Adobe PDF Library for server use. C/C++, there may be a Java interface too from DataLogics, but huge overkill for this task, and many find it rather pricy for a simple task like this. There are third party libraries and tools, but this is not the place to discuss them.
