Importing photos from Aperture 3 must be possible.

OK first off I am new to Lightroom 3, Aperture 3 and Mac.  I have in the last few days gone from being a Windows user with Elements to being a Macbook Pro user, Lion OS, with iPhoto, Aperture 3, Lightroom 3 and Elements 9 loaded.  having read lots of threads on the forums I couldn't make my mind up what would be best between Aperture and Lightroom, so took advantage of the recent offer on Lightroom to have both put on my new Macbook pro with the idea of running both side by side to try and workout which is best for me.  I had the data transfer carried out from my Windows PC with about 13,000 photos being loaded into Aperture.
When I tried to import the Aperture library into Lightroom it can't see the files and I guess now I spot a difference in Mac vs Windows.  In Windows all the files were in folders on the hard drive and were available for any software to use/view, Elements, Nikon capture etc.  On the Mac the photos all seem to be "part of" Aperture, so I can see the folders and individual photos in Finder, click on one and it opens Aperture.  So it's all there but almost like they are hidden.
I suspect it may be nothing more than my virgin user status of a Mac that is doing this and there is a preference somewhere that is so blindingly obvious I can't see it.
But any help gratefully received, or my thoughts of taking advantage of an offer will be blown

Don't worry, it's not obvious but not too difficult to sort out. What you've done is import the file into Aperture in what is known as "managed" mode - ie they disappear inside it. This was the way Aperture was first designed, and some people still like it, but a lot of people complained and so they quickly added "referenced" mode where files are left in normal folders.
What you need to do is select the images and use the Relocate Masters command (I think it's under the File menu). This allows you to move the pictures out of Aperture's own file and into the folder system. You can then import them into Lightroom.

  • Cannot import photos from aperture

Up until yesterday I've had no problems importing photos from Aperture (3.1.3) during the iPhone (4.3.5) sync process. Now iTunes (10.4.1) presents me with a dialogue window containing the following message: "The iPhone "xxx" cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found." The photo files are there in Aperture. If I uncheck all of the detail boxes, but leave the "Sync Photos from Aperture" box checked the sync process completes successfully, but no photos were copied to the iPhone because none were selected. I've rebooted the iMac, etc. And, of course, if I leave the "Sync Photos from Aperture" box unchecked the sync process completes successfully.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks,
    George

I thought my core issue was that my single library has this iPhoto icon associated with it.  I'd prefer it to be considered as an Aperture library.
Are you looking at the correct libary in the Finder? That icon is puzzling.
What are the versions of iPhoto and Aperture that you are using?
If you have upgraded your photolibrary by the latest versions of Aperture (Aperture 3.4.5) and iPhoto (iPhoto 9.4.3) the icon should be the same for both iPhoto libraries and Aperzure libraries. If you are not yet using the latest version, consider to upgrade, because you are missing out on some bug fixes.
The "Kind" displayed in the Finder will depend on the filename extension. A library created by iPhoto should have the extension "photolibrary" and the Aperture libraries "aplibrary".
Check also the settings in Image Capture:
In Image Capture you can set the application to open for each device individually. It might be possible, that you have set a diffrent application to open in Image Capture: I have set all my devices to "No Application" in "Image Capture". This way I can decide, if I want to open iTunes or Aperture, when I connect my iPad or iPod.
If you are really troubled by the "Kind = Photo Library" you can convert that by importing the iPhoto Library into a new, empty Aperture Library. Then Aperture will set up the internal database files with the "Kind = Aperture Library".

  • After upgrade to IOS8 can't import photos from Aperture

I upgraded to IOS8, reset my iPad to factory settings and reinstalled all my apps from scratch.
When go into iTunes and I select to import photos from Aperture on my Mac it hangs.
I have an old iPhoto library on my Mac and if I select photos from that it works.
I have switched off everything to do with iCloud after seeing some posts that this might be causing the problem, but not a solution for me.
(I have over 28,000 photos in my Aperture library).

Did you turn on iCloud Photo Library? I suspect it may remove the ability to sync photos and videos between Macs and iOS devices.

  • When importing photos from aperture photos are blurry

I have been making a video and up to now no problems. Then today i was working on it and when i started adding some more photos from aperture they were fuzzy and blurry.
In aperture they are crisp and clear but the minute i put them in imovie they are blurry and not useable.
I have imported photos from aperture and iphoto both and had no issues so not sure what is going on today.

I think I just figured this out.
Go into Aperture preferences and go to "previews" tab.  Set "photo preview" to "don't limit" and turn the quality all the way up.  Then select all your photos, go to the "photos" menu, hold down the option key and click "generate previews".
It appears that the library sharing is just using the generated previews from Aperture which default to poor quality.  You need to turn up the quality and then force a re-render of all your previews.  iMovie should pick this up (but won't update your slideshow...).
Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed by those defaults.   Wasted hours of my time as I rebuilt the slideshow with better versions of my photos.
    Hope that helped.

  • Problem Importing Photos from Aperture 3 into iPhoto '11

I store my photos in Aperture 3, but import them into iPhoto to create calendars, cards, etc. I usually work with RAW or high resolution JPG images in Aperture. However, when I import these into the new iPhoto '11, it automatically converts my RAW images into very low resolution images (e.g., 100-200k instead of at least 1-2MB). I cannot seem to find an option to change this. This was not a problem with the old iPhoto. To import, I start in iPhoto, then click "Show Aperture Library", then drag my photos/folder. I would like to have an option to import images as RAW files, or just high res JPGs.
I know I can export my Aperture images to the desktop, then import them into iPhoto for a temporary fix, but that is such as hassle, especially since iPhoto and Aperture are supposed to work well together. Thanks for any suggestions!

Aperture creates preview images that contain all the adjustments you've made to the master image. These previews are what is shared with other apps such as iLife or if you drag and drop an image out of Aperture to another app or the Finder.
The size of the previews is controlled in Aperture Preferences. Open Aperture Preferences and click on the Previews icon at the top. In the bottom of this dialog there is a popup menu titled "Photo Preview". This is the setting that controls the size of the image Aperture shares with iPhoto. Change this setting to the size you want.
But wait, you're not done yet. Changing this setting does nothing until a new preview is created in Aperture. If you right click an image in Aperture there is a menu item near the bottom named "Update Preview". But what you really need is "Generate Preview". Right click the image and then hold down the option key and you'll see "Update Preview" change to "Generate Preview". Choose "Generate Preview" and a new preview will be created using the new size setting you made in Preferences. You need to do this for each and every image you wish to share at the larger size. You can select multiple images before selecting the "Generate Preview" command to speed things up.
Now when you share an image from Aperture to iPhoto the new larger file will be used. The advantage of smaller previews is your Aperture library will also be smaller but the trade off is what you get in other apps that are using your images.

  • Importing Photos from Aperture to iPhoto Issue

I am using Aperture 2 and am seeing a behavior I don't understand. My photos are now in the Aperture library and I also have a new, nearly empty iPhoto library (I archived my old iPhoto library after importing all the files to Aperture).
The behavior comes up when I want to move a file back to iPhoto. If I go to iPhoto, open the Aperture browser and drag the photo to iPhoto, I get a much smaller picture than the original, and smaller than if I instead export the version from Aperture and import it into iPhoto.
Example: I have a JPEG that is 1.8Mb and 2560 x 1920 in in Aperture. When I drag it to iPhoto from the Aperture browser in iPhoto, it becomes a 230kb picture at 1280x960. If I export and import, the file size changes a little (down to 1.4Mb), but the resolution remains at 2560x1920.
Aren't you supposed to be able to drag the full-sized image to iPhoto using the Aperture browser?
    Thanks.

"Full size" makes reference to the original pixel dimensions of the photo coming from the camera. In my case I have a 4.0 megapixel camera that shoots 1704 x 2272. This would mean that Aperture would be creating full size previews at those pixel dimensions. This wouldn't make much sense for me because I'm not shooting RAW. Previews are primarily for photographers who shoot RAW, but want to keep JPG versions so either full RAW files can be stored offline, or so they can quickly view the JPG previews in quick preview mode.
    (Hope that makes sense.)
As far as your iMac goes, the 1680 setting would size your previews down to that number of pixels which would fit pixel for pixel into your iMac's monitor. Even if you went smaller with your previews, Aperture would still have them fill the screen in full screen mode, they'd just be blowing them up a bit.
Enjoy it. Its quickly becoming a favorite app of mine.

How do I import photos into Final Cut Express from Aperture?

  • Dark photos from Aperture, iPhoto or Drag and drop

All imported photos (from aperture, iphoto or drag&droped) whitin a project are very dark in the viewer, and in the final video (itunes, export with several options...). The histogram levels of the image are low. The preview image in the project looks fine.
I tried repair permissions with disk Utility, system clean with Onyx... the problem remains.
    Thanks

I'm having the same problem, but only after I installed the iMovie 9.0.1 update. Before then my still images looked fine when imported.
But now, my pictures are coming up so dark as to be unusable. I was forced to export them as slideshow movies from iPhoto and import them as clips to iMovie last time I tried to use still images.

  • Importing Photos from Pictures Album revisited

Quite a while ago, I posted a question about my Aperture's lack of ability to import from the "Pictures" folder.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1540299&tstart=0
I took a close look today, and I solved the problem. I noticed that when I navigated to the Pictures folder, there were only two entries, and neither of them actually existed in my Pictures. Further, when I selected them, Aperture told me it couldn't find specific folders within *the iPhoto library*. Whoa!
So, somehow, there is a rogue AlbumData.xml file in my Pictures folder. This file belongs in an iPhoto library, but it somehow ended up (accidental drag and drop? iPhoto Library Manager? Maybe I'll never know) at the top level of Pictures. Aperture then mistook my entire Pictures folder for an iPhoto library, and a broken one at that. It did not parse any other folder in the Pictures folder because, well, it was an iPhoto library.
Solution? Get rid of the AlbumData.xml file in Pictures. Now I can import from Pictures!

    Terence,
I have a folder called "Panos" containing the photos I want as referenced. When I drag that folder into the "Documents" shortcut in Finder, my path (According to "Get Info" of one of the photos) is
    /Users/nathananderson/Documents/Panos
In this case, I can navigate to the Panos folder from Aperture and import photos.
When I put my photos into Pictures, the path is:
    /Users/nathananderson/Pictures/Panos
And using Aperture, I navigate to the Pictures folder that is in the same level as Documents. Aperture shows me nothing but "Last Import" and "Library". There is no other folder to select!
When composing this message, I also found out that I have three other folders in my Pictures folder. These other three folders are not Aperture or iPhoto library folders, and they are also unavailable for "Import Photos" from Aperture.

Have a look at your import setting specifically Store Files:
Make sure it is set to where you want the originals to go.
Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - Don;t empty the system trash. The originals that you deleted from the Desktop are in there and are the only copies you have unless they are still in the camera.

  • Is it possible to import photos from a disk and retain the same order?

Is i possible to import photos from a disk and retain the same order they appear on the disk?  When I import them, the come out in random order.

When first imported the photos will be sorted in the Event chronologically. On the disk they well be sorted by the Finder and that's usually alphanumerically by file name. So select the photos in the event and type Commnad+N.  That will create a new album at the left with the photos in it. Then go to the View ➙ Sort Photo menu and select "By Title".  That should give you the same order as you view the photos on the disk via the Finder.
