Importing photos from my hard drive

We have just converted from a PC to a MAC and with us we have bought 20,000 photos. The apple store transfered them on to our HARD DISC 2. When we are importing the photos into iPhoto they seem to be making a copy of them on HARD DISC 1 (where the app is kept) therefore we are doubling up the photos - not a good idea!!
In the help features it says "However, if you already have an extensive collection of photos saved on your computer and you prefer to leave your photos in their current file structure, you can choose to have iPhoto point to your original photo files instead of copying them in iPhoto. Either way, you can still make full use of iPhoto."
what does this mean?
we have made sure the tick in preference for "copy files to iPhoto libary " is unticked!
Any advice?

Just to clarify: it's your computer and your machines, the options that you choose are entirely yours. However, many people don't allow iPhoto to 'Copy Files to the iPhoto Library Folder' and then have difficulties as they didn't recognise the consequences after.
File Management means what files are where, and how they get there. If you take 100 shots and connect to iPhoto, click import iPhoto will import the pics to the database and add them to the correct roll folder in the iPhoto Library Folder.
If you're doing the file management, you'll have to copy the pics from your camera to the place you want them on your HD, and then import the files to iPhoto. It's more work, and it's the dull work, not like arranging Albums, Slideshows etc, which is the fun work.
However, there are other consequences as well - deleting is more difficult, backing up is more complicated, and - especially - moving the library of files around is more difficult. Remember, at some point in the future you will buy another computer.
iphoto is a database, not an image viewer. It has a built-in image viewer, light weight editing and version control, but at it's heart is a database. When you create an album in iPhoto, that's recorded in the database. Put the same pic into fifty albums, and iPhoto tracks that, and there's no file duplication, so it's very economical on disk space.
You can run your iPhoto Library Folder from HD2. It's very simple. Drag the iPhoto Library Folder from HD 1 to HD2 then launch iPhoto while holding down the option (or alt) key and use the resulting dialogue to select the new location. Ever after your pics etc will be stored on HD2.
This is exactly the kind of thing that's more complicated if you store the files apart from the iPhoto Library Folder.
Even better, now when you back up, simply back up the iPhoto Library Folder to your Maxtor, not only will you get all your pics - Original and Modified versions - but you'll also get your database files, albums, keywords etc,. all at one go. This may not seem like much now, but in a month or two when you've organised your pics, possibly using keywords and Smart Albums, slideshows, maybe a book or two, then the accompanying files become very important.
Again, think of iPhoto as a database. Put your pic in a certain spot. Tell iPhoto it's there (by importing it). Now edit it (which you can do either with iPhoto or Via iPhoto with an external editor). iPhoto retains your original, and also the modified version. Now iPhoto is tracking two interrelated files. If you change the relationship of those files, iPhoto will lose them. If you keep them together in a single place, iPhoto can follow them with ease.
So, and again, it's your decision. I would characterise it this way: If you want to think about your Photos, let iPhoto manage the files, if you want to think about the files...
By all means ask more if you need further clarification.

  • How do I import photos from external hard drive to iCloud library?

I have saved many photos to an external hard drive for security. I would like to store at least some of them in iCloud so I have direct access from Photos. Is this possible please?

how do I import photos from external hard drive to iCloud library?
Just like you'd do it with iPhoto.  Drag the photos or folder of photos into the open Photos Library window or onto the Photos icon in the Dock.
If you have the iCloud Photo Library activated in Photos the new photos will be copied to the online iCloud Photo Library along with the rest of the photos in your library.  Remember, with the iCloud Photo Liberty it's all the photos or none.  You may have to purchase additional iCloud space to store all of your photos.

Everytime I open my laptop, Lightroom opens and tries to import photos from my external drive. Is there a default I need to change?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Error -36 is, as X423424X says, a generic I/O error. It doesn't say anything about what caused the error, or indeed where it occurred (source or target).
You have to describe exactly your action when the error occurs. Is the ext'l drive you mentioned formatted as NTFS (Win default file system)? Without additional software, Mac OS X cannot write to NTFS, it can only read from it.

  • Importing photos from external hard drive.

I had stored my photos on a external hard drive from power book G4(which had iphoto4.0.3).
I recently purchased IMac G5. I cannot import my photos into G5(has iphoto5.4) from external hard drive. I get a message saying you have installed a new version of iphoto.
How can I get my photos back on the new machine?
    Thank you in advance.

Had another idea. Since you were not upgrading a computer to iPhoto 5 - which would upgrade your existing iPhoto Library Folder (database) and since you, I presume, already have a working iPhoto 5 Library Folder -- perhaps we have to trick iPhoto into doing the upgrade.
Quit iPhoto5. Move to the desktop or rename the existing iPhoto 5 Library Folder.
But also move or delete the existing iPhoto 5 preferences file:
You will find it in your Home directory:
    (Home/your account) >Library>Preferences>com.apple.iPhoto.plist
Remove or trash the preference (.plist file) and restart iPhoto.
This will get iPhoto 5 to launch like it was the very first time. With only the backup in your Pictures Folder it will try to open with it and do the upgrade.

  • How to import photos from external hard drive and exclude duplicate images

    Hi,
I apologize if this is easy, but I can't seem to find out how to do it. I have an external hard drive that I used to back up my photos when I was in the Windows environment. I want to import these into iPhoto and/or Aperture, but how do I exclude duplicates that I may already have in iPhoto?? Also....should I import them into BOTH programs, or just bring them into iPhoto and selectively bring them into Aperture when I want to edit?
    Thanks,
    Ron

You really should choose between Aperture and iPhoto. Both are Photo organisers, both manage your photos. You need to decide which one is primary. Then only import to that one.
Aperture is the more powerful of the two. If you’re shooting RAW then deciding on Aperture is a no-brainer. It’s easier to have files in Aperture and share them with iPhoto than the other way around.
If you’re not shooting RAW, if the volume of photos is small, then stick with iPhoto.
just bring them into iPhoto and selectively bring them into Aperture when I want to edit?
Aperture is not an editor, like Photoshop. Like iPhoto it’s a database application.

  • Iphoto 4 -: cannot import photos from xternal hard drive

i wanted to decrease the memory of the hard drive and thus dragged and moved the entire iphoto file icon on my finder home box to the external hard drive. this was 4 years of photos. i did not use the backup progam- i just dragged the file into the hard drive. I now have the file on my hard drive and wanted to import some albums but it is not letting me import.
each album has an associated data file with it and some how i cannot import anything.
i read the support info on the apple website but still unsuccessful
the windows was much easier-- why does apple make simple things so hard!!
    thanks
    ss

The question is, why are you making things so hard? You can't import into iPhoto any photos that are already in an iPhoto Library folder. If you've copied the iPhoto Library folder to your external drive, it's all there -- there is nothing that needs to be imported; it's a complete iPhoto Library folder. To make it the "current" library, follow the instructions in the iPhoto Help topic, "Switching between photo libraries".

  • IPhoto 11 - How can I import photos from my hard drive keeping the folders the way they are?

I recently went from PC to Mac.  I transferred thousands of photos, many of which I had in albums.  When I imported them into iPhotos, it didn't seem to preserve my albums, unless I'm not seeing something.  Is there a way to do that?

To begin with we only have words to communicate with on this forum so it is critical that we use the same ones
in iPhoto you have a library which can be views as events, photos, places or faces  --  events and photos view show all photo in your library and faces and places show only thos that have faces or places assigned
albums are logical entities that are pointers to the photos in the library and are used for organization
folders are logical entities that hold albums or other folders and also are used for organization
The photos (by default and recommended) are copies into th eiPhoto library with is a SQL database. you ony access the photos using the iPhoto program or the media browser which is in the lower left hand corner of each open/attach/upload window
If you drag a folder of photos onto the open iPhoto window it will import them and create an event names the same as the folder  if you drag the foldr of photos to the source pane on the left it will import them into an event and create an album
The biggest problem most windows users have is thinking of managing their photo with a database rather than the old way of managing files with  a file manager
iPhoto is much more powerful since you can serach the database on any criteria
    Hope this helps
It also would be helpful to watch the iPhoto tutorials under getting started - http://www.apple.com/support/iphoto/

  • How do I import images from my hard drive without losing resolution? My original files after import are significantly smaller. What should I do?

How do I import images from my hard drive without losing resolution? My original files after import are significantly smaller. What should I do?

Hi Keith, and all others chiming in, I do have the correct option checked in advanced settings telling iPhoto to copy the images into the library. What is a refernced library? Perhaps this is where I am getting confused. I exported my entire photo library from an old iMac5 to my external hard drive, from there I attempted to import the entire library to my new iMac. Am I overlooking an obvious and easy way to import from the hard drive to the new iMac--I dragged the entire photo pholder from the hard drive to the open window of iPhoto on the new computer. Now, I only get preview file sizes in iPhoto, unless I have my external drive open. Perhaps I need to import the original images from the hard drive in a different way...?! (This is making me feel pretty stupid.)

  • Hi All, I recently bought a Mac Book Pro and transferred all my photos from my hard drive onto the Mac. I realised that there were some folders which didn't have the camera information embedded in the files and these files refuse to open on iPhoto. HELP!!

Hi All, I recently bought a Mac Book Pro and transferred all my photos from my hard drive onto the Mac. I realised that there were some folders which didn't have the camera information embedded in the files and these files refuse to open on iPhoto. I know that the folders that have the problem were not transferred to the hard drive via a photo transfer application (I have a Canon camera) but I simply copied them out of the photo card and onto my old PC.
Is there some way I can open these pictures on my Mac? They work fine on a PC.

    Thanks for your reply.
The files don't open in preview either. In preview I get the error message 'The file "xxxx_xxx.jpg" could not be opened. It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn't recognize'. The folders with these un-openable pictures do not even get imported into iPhoto. When I try to import them I get an error message about the files being unreadable.
The color profile information on the un-openable files is not visible but I see that all the other files from my old drive are RGB.

  • If I import files from my hard drive to a catalog, does it index the original copy or make new one

If I import files from my hard drive to a catalog, does it index the original copy or make new one

The one exception to MichelB's answer is if you use the "from iPhoto" command in the mac organizer. In this case the organizer does copy the contents of your iphoto library, since if it wrote any information into that library it could easily corrupt it and cause the loss of the photos it contains.

  • How do I put my photos from a hard drive to my mac using different versions of Iphoto?  It is saying I can't because of the updated version.

    Hello,
I am trying to move photos from my hard drive to my mac.   Mac is using an updated version of Iphoto and is denying the transfer.
How do I get around this?  Do I download the order version?  or can I not get my photos?  If anyone can help please do.
You have made changes to your photo library using a newer version of iPhoto. Please quit and use the latest version of iPhoto.
    Thanks Carol

I copied my photos onto my hard drive from my mac about 3 months ago.  I just plugged my hard drive in to put my pictures back onto my mac but it is giving me a message when trying to open up the photos from the hard drive that states
Like I said we need to know exactly what you did
THere are lots of totally different ways to "copy your photos" onto a hard drive
Exactly how did you do that? The correct way to move an iPhoot library is to verify that the hard drive is formattted Mac OS extended (journaled) and then to drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to it - reverse to bring it back - just drag it from the EHD to the pictures folder (default location) on your computer
    Why are you doing this?
you can try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database - depending on what has been going on this might resolve things
