Importing photos from Windows Creative Memories Software
I just got my wife a Macbook for Christmas and have successfully imported almost everything from her old PC. The one problem I have is that she invested a considerable amount of time labeling and organizing digital pictures on the PC using a Creative Memories Program called Memory Manager 2.0. Does anyone know how I can import this into iPhoto so the old work is not lost?
purth01:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Unless the CM program can write the metadata into the image files the keywords, comments and titles will not be retrievable. If your photos were organized by folder then each folder imported into iPhoto will result in an Event.
Happy New Year
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

Importing Photos From Windows Live Photo Gallery To iPhoto '11
##### Note: I've seen a lot of discussion on this topic but nothing recent, so here it goes #####
Hi -
I am about to receive my new iMac (congratulations to me!) and will soon commense transferring >5,000 photos from my PC. I would like these to transfer into iPhoto.
I've used Windows Live Photo Gallery (WLPG) to tag these photos by various means (location, person, event, etc). I've read that WLPG stores this metadata with the .jpg file in XMP, or Extensible Metadata Platform. The result is that the tagging data is with the photo file. The tags are in a few categories:
People
Events
Places
Each of these categories will have a number of tags (example: Events include: "Joe's 5th birthday", "Christmas '12", etc)
I understand that iPhoto supports data if it embedded in the ITPC. Reading a bit about iPhoto, there look to be a number of homes for this data (Events, Keywords, etc).
Ideally, I would love to have these photos transferred into iPhoto with consistent tagging. Does anyone know how I can maintain this data into iPhoto? Can anyone recommend a tool for the conversion?
Thanks! My Windows pc crashed and I'm thinking about replacing with the Mac Mini. But like you, I have thousands of tagged photos in Windows Live Gallery. Losing the tags is a non-starter. I really don't care too much about "where" the photo was taken, but I do care about "who" is in the photo and what "event" was occurring when the photo was taken. For example, one photo could be tagged with my daughter's name, my son's name, my wife's name, event of Disneyworld, and the date taken should be just embedded in the photo itself. So four tags for the one photo plus the embedded date taken.
If I migrate to iPhoto on the Mac, will I be able to bring all of those individual tags over easily? What was your final experience now that you've been messing with it for a year? And if you are happy, are you able to sort all you photos by just clicking a person's name and a date range and having iPhoto return all photos with that one person within those dates?
Any insight would be helpful. Thanks. -
I haev a PC as well as a new Mac Mini.
It has always bugged me that Mac seems to force me to use a silly image managment software (like iphoto) to import photos from my camera when i plug it in.
On my PC (windows 7) it simply recognizes it as a "removable storage device" and i can access the flash memory as if it was a hard drive and simply drag my photos to a folder on my computer. (this same technique works with my iphone photos)
However on my Mac it seems there is no way to open up the flash memory and just drag photos off and manually import and manage my photos. I do not like all of the complicated software to complete a simple task like this.
Am i missing something? if so please fill me in. thanks!Mac seems to force me to use a silly image managment software (like iphoto) to import photos from my camera
It does not force you to do that.
Open iPhoto, go to iPhoto / Preferences and change the setting so no application opens when the camera is connected.
Whether you change the setting or not, the camera does indeed appear as a "removable storage device". At least mine does:
And you can double click the camera icon and navigate the contents. The contents are shown exactly as they would be on any "storage device":
Thus you have the option in iPhoto preferences to let it do it for you, or do it yourself if that is your choice. -
As of a few days ago, I can no longer import photos from my Nikon Coolpix s7c into iPhoto '08. Never before had a problem. I sent a request to Nikon for help and they referred me back to Apple. Help, if possible, please.
As the photos imported to the test library you know that it works with your version of iPhoto (so, you can skip the paranoia about Apple making you upgrade). The issue then is the Library, so
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption. -
How do i import photos from iphone to windows pc without the autoplay
My phone doesnt have space anymore for me to upgrade IOS7 and would really appreacite if someone could help. i have to import pictures to my computer and somehow that autoplay option is not coming on and also the phone is not showling under the removable options.
Hello Lady MC,
Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your iPhone. It sounds like you are trying to import photos from your iPhone, but the AutoPlay dialogue box doesn't automatically appear.
You may need to enable AutoPlay on your computer:
Connect your iOS device to the computer. If the AutoPlay window appears, click "Import Pictures and Videos using Windows", then skip to step 4. If the "Import Pictures and Video" dialog appears, skip to step 4.
Note: If the AutoPlay dialog box does not automatically open, you may need to enable the behavior.
That excerpt is from the section titled "If you have a Windows Vista or Windows 7 PC" in the following article:
iOS: Importing personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer

If your iPhone is not appearing as a connected device at all, I recommend reviewing the following article:

Can i import photos from ipad to windows based computer.
my ipad is losing charge very quickly and I have been told by apple genius bar support that the battery is working fine. They say I need to back up the ipad and then reload from scratch. But they say that if I simply use the back up I am likely to have the same problem, so what I really need to do is make sure that my photos are safe and then can choose what to reload. But I have a windows pc not a mac and I cant see how to transfer the photos on the ipad to the computer. Apple say they know nothing about windows computers. Any easy, non technical ideas please?
First of all, you can use iTunes or iCloud to backup your data on iPad. If you have no idea on how to make a backup, you can go to :http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203977
Then, to import photos from iPad to computer, there are two ways:
Way 1: If you have enable iCloud, you can see and copy the photos you took in the last 30 days on Windows iCloud panel which you have installed on your computer. However, there is an advantage that you can not import all photos.
Way 2: You can use iTunes to copy the photos on iPad to your computer. Install the latest iTunes and connect iPad to the computer. Then, you'll see your device on the "Computer (disk)" list , click it, you can see all your pictures on the iPad and import or copy it to the computer. -
Trying to import photos from iPhone 5, windows explorer present many icons of local disks which cannot be deleted
for some reason there are many folders in the iPhone for picturesI have been having the same issues with my devices (iphone4s & Ipad and Ipad mini) NOT importing photos to my PC via windows 7. Too be honest, i am sick and tired of looking for a fix. I have spent days on this and now realise via forums that this issue is widespread. (deja vu - remember notes vanishing?)
I have tripled checked everything but the platform just simply does not work.
So, i will get offered various 'hunches' as to how to fix this...but hold on..after paying over £1,000 for the equipment why should i have to go find a fix...basically ...yet again...Apple products not delivering what they promise and are flawed. Gather im pretty p**sed about this...you betya...will i buy Apple again...?? take a guess. -
I work at a Learning Center that has 12 iPads on the same iTunes and iCloud account. Each classroom uses an iPad assigned to their room to take photos. Each of these photos then shows up in the Photo Stream in all 11 of the other iPads. I have no trouble importing photos that are in the Camera Roll of any individual iPad, but I have not been able to import photos from the Photo Stream if the picture was not taken on the specific iPad I am using. It is not feasible for me to collect all 12 iPads everyday to import everyones photos, so how can I use one "master" iPad that will let me import photos from the Photo Stream since it has all the photos that everyone has taken?
You downloaded an iCloud backup to your PC? I assume you mean you downloaded your photo stream to your PC. What you may not know is that photo stream only keeps your photos for 30 days. After that, they are deleted from photo stream but not from any device that already has them (such as your phone). When you enabled photo stream on your PC you only had access to photos from the last 30 days since the others are no longer there, even though they remain on your phone.
To transfer these to your computer at this point you have two options:
Save them to the camera roll on your phone (by opening the my photo stream album, tap Edit, tap all the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll. (You can only import photos to your computer from the Camera Roll album.) Then import them to your computer as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083; or
Use an app like PhotoSync, which can wirelessly transfer photos from any album between your devices/computers, including the my photo stream album.
In the future, always import your photos from your camera roll to your computer via USB before deleting them. Don't rely on photo stream or your iCloud backup to save your photos. -

IPhoto always opens asking to import photos from Touch
Hello,
Each time I connect the Touch to my Mac, iPhoto automatically opens, as if a camera is connected to the computer, asking if I want to import photos from the Touch?
How to disable this feature? What I want to do is export
Thanks,
Neiltookyfes, I don't get an icon. The window does name my iPod Touch, but there is no option for "No application." Elsewhere in Image Capture preferences, "No application" can be selected for when any camera is connected to the computer. Then iPhoto no longer opens when Touch is connected, but my real camera doesn't open iPhoto like it used to. It's a mystery, considering the Touch is not even a camera (yet).
Thanks for the reply, but I think this may be a glitch in the software somewhere. iPhoto should not be assuming the Touch is a camera. -
Import Photos from IPhoto into 3rd party Photo Book Maker?
Using BookSmart from Blurb, to make a photo book, this a GREAT piece of software BTW, I need to import photos from IPhoto and can't seem to see how do it? Not sure I even can. Any help??
Assuming the program has an Import option that brings up an Open/Save/Attach file browser window, look in the left hand sidebar for Photos, under the Media heading at the bottom. It will show you your iPhoto library. Probably easiest if you first create an album in iPhoto for the photos you think you are likely to use.
Alternatively, browse the Blurb site for an FAQ and find:
http://blurb.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/blurb.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?p_faqid=74&p_sid=44cbAnHj&purl=
How do I use iPhoto pictures with BookSmart?
To view JPGs and PNGs that are stored in iPhoto, click the My iPhoto Images bar in the left content column of BookSmart. Choose which album you’d like to view via the dropdown menu, and then drag and drop the images into your book. BookSmart will only make copies of images you actually drag (or autoflow) to pages of your book. -
I can't import photos from my iPAD 2 into Lightroom. Crashes every time. Does anyone have a way to do this?
Apple iPad 2 requires Windows XP with Service Pack 3 (SP3), or an upgrade to Windows 7:
https://discussions.apple.com/message/13282479?messageID=13282479
XP SP3 update is available for free, more information here:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/learn-how-to-install-windows-xp-service-pa ck-3-sp3
Make sure you backup ALL your data files and LR catalog files, etc. The only problem I encountered with SP3 update was loss of my ATI graphics card TV tuner. Apparently SP3 loads newer versions of graphics drivers, which may not be compatible with all cards. Unfortunately there is no way to "test" if your desktop/laptop will be affected, and MS does not provide the option to only install certain components (i.e. Apple iPad 2 compatibility update). In my case, reinstallation of the original ATI CD graphics drivers fixed the TV tuner problem.
My best suggestion is to first check the manufacturer's support website for XP SP3 issues relating to your specific model desktop or laptop. The XP SP3 update is required by many new devices and software applications. If you intend to keep your current system and stay on XP, then it makes no sense to put off this major update. Upgrade to Windows 7 is an option, but many older systems have non-compatible hardware and software on them. You can run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to check compatibility here:

Problems importing photos from cameras
I have a iPod with video, a photo connector, a Pentax Optio WP and a Canon 350D. When I try to import photos from any of my 2 cameras it may give me the error message "an error occurred while importing". It is more likely the more photos i have to import. Say If I have to import only 10 jpg photos it does it with no problem. However if I import 500MB worth of photos with or without raw i get the error message. Once the error occurred I can't access any of the imported phots, since the menu item is missing then and i can't run any more imports. I have to connect the camera to my PC and delete all import folders to get it working again. I have set up both cameras with PTP/print and always double-check all connections
Any help would be appericiated, Thanks
iPod with Video Windows XPHi Spoottyipod
First off, do a soft reset on your iPod(hold down menu+centre button) this seems to fix most peoples problems. If not.
i've posted this a few times for people on here. The easy way to solve your problem is to buy the Belkin Hi-Speed USB 2.0 15-in-1 Media Card Reader/Writer. model number:F5U249ea.
the reason's you should get this are. 1: it works perfect with the ipod and camera connector and is a little bit faster.
2: your can keep shooting while your saving your shot's.
if still no luck. put the CD that came with your iPod in and use the software updater on there. if you want the latest 1.1.1 go to: http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
hope this helps you. don't hesitate to ask for any help.

IPhoto quits unexpectedly every time I try to import photos from iPhone
Hi
I'm struggling with what seems a common problem... But I looked at some of the solutions and they are not working for me. iPhoto quits when I try to import photos from iPhone.
I tried to look for the 3ivx file/folder that has been mentioned as the solution, but I don't even have the folder. I've updated iPhoto, it's the latest version: 9.2.3

1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928
One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
