Importing Photos From Windows Live Photo Gallery To iPhoto '11

Hi -
I am about to receive my new iMac (congratulations to me!) and will soon commense transferring >5,000 photos from my PC. I would like these to transfer into iPhoto.
I've used Windows Live Photo Gallery (WLPG) to tag these photos by various means (location, person, event, etc). I've read that WLPG stores this metadata with the .jpg file in XMP, or Extensible Metadata Platform. The result is that the tagging data is with the photo file. The tags are in a few categories:
People
Events
Places
Each of these categories will have a number of tags (example: Events include: "Joe's 5th birthday", "Christmas '12", etc)
I understand that iPhoto supports data if it embedded in the ITPC. Reading a bit about iPhoto, there look to be a number of homes for this data (Events, Keywords, etc).
Ideally, I would love to have these photos transferred into iPhoto with consistent tagging. Does anyone know how I can maintain this data into iPhoto? Can anyone recommend a tool for the conversion?

My Windows pc crashed and I'm thinking about replacing with the Mac Mini. But like you, I have thousands of tagged photos in Windows Live Gallery. Losing the tags is a non-starter. I really don't care too much about "where" the photo was taken, but I do care about "who" is in the photo and what "event" was occurring when the photo was taken. For example, one photo could be tagged with my daughter's name, my son's name, my wife's name, event of Disneyworld, and the date taken should be just embedded in the photo itself. So four tags for the one photo plus the embedded date taken.
If I migrate to iPhoto on the Mac, will I be able to bring all of those individual tags over easily? What was your final experience now that you've been messing with it for a year? And if you are happy, are you able to sort all you photos by just clicking a person's name and a date range and having iPhoto return all photos with that one person within those dates?
Any insight would be helpful. Thanks.

I can't import contacts from windows live to Icloud
Vcard import (.vcf) doesn't work.
However export of Vcards from Icloud to Windows live is possible.CSV2VCF converter doesn't work...
Finally, I used XLS to VCF converter... 5 by 5, because the freeware was restricted... It was long but OK.
But when I tried to import these VCF files to Icloud ... It didn't work either...
I got the same message as when I tried a direct import.
So... Forget it! I'm fed up with this!

Cannot find a solution that works to import messages from Windows Live.
The instructions given say to go to Tools/Options/Advanced/Maintenance/Stored Folders and there is no tools option in my Windows Live.

You know, I am pretty sure that the issue has to be with xorg. I was having this issue a lot a month ago, but then, a certain upgrade of xorg fixed the issue. I was fine for a few weeks. My computer never crashed. But, unfortunatly, a package in that same upgrade was broken and I ended up upgrading the system again a few weeks ago. xorg also upgraded at the same time. Now, my computer keeps crashing randomly and in random ways.
I think that the best thing to do is to keep up with the xorg updates, find one that works for your system and have pacman ignore all upgrades to xorg after that.
Actually, if anyone can tell me how to downgrade xorg to its state 3 weeks ago, it would be absolutely awesome.

Because if you use runlevel 5 you dont have agetty on TTY2 so it won't try and kill xorg all the bloody time
The problem is caused because GDM is starting so fast the XORG server it loads up checks for free VT's and finds TTY2 is empty and starts on it. THEN your inittab fires up agetty on TTY2.. which promptly causes hell to arrive in a handbag.
You really need to be less critical of people offering you advice.. and possibly even check what they have posted in the past.. like the threads from months ago dealing with this issue. (search is great you know) -
HP5640 All-in-one does not print photos from Windows Live Photo Gallery
Setup printer using mobile device Installed print driver using provided CD. Updated driver software. Printer is networked by wireless to computer & smartphone.Was able to print photo from smartphone, was able to print Word document from computer. Was unable to print photo from computer using Windows Live Photo Gallery. Used the HP troubleshooter, following all possible solutions to no avail. Selected the option of HP Photo Paper but it defaulted to the 8x11 paper tray. Can someone please help? Thank you!

I would like to assist you today with resolving this printing issue. Can I please have you follow the steps below to properly configure your print settings under the Print dialogue window in Windows Live Photo Gallery. 1. Load your Photo Paper in the Photo Tray on your printer 2. Open an image you would like to print under Windows Live Photo Gallery 3. Click on File and select Print 4. Under the Print dialogue window please ensure that your printer, Paper Size, Quality, and Paper Type are all set properly for your specific print job 5. Next, click on the Options button on the bottom right hand corner. Under the Print Settings dialogue box click Printer Properties. 6. Next, change the Paper Source to Photo Tray. If it currently is set to 'Main Tray' please click the Main Tray option and it will drop down to allow you to select Photo Tray. Click OK once the Tray change has been made. NOTE: If the Paper Size shows an exclamation mark, it means that your Photo Tray does not support the Paper Size selected. Click the dropdown next to Paper Size and choose a size that does not show an exclamation mark. 7. Cannot print from Windows Live photo gallery
I cannot print from Windows Live Photo Gallery. The printer is connected and has a signal.
This printer is an HP Photosmart Touchscreen. I have since resolved the problem by uninstalling, and reinstalling the printer. Not sure what the problem was, but it is now working. Thank you for your help.

I just got a new Mac Mini, and now when I try to import photos into Lightroom, iPhoto ties to load them first, then Lightroom can't find the files. Big problem. What to do?
Simple:
File -> Export to get your photos out of the iPhoto Library. In the Export dialogue you can set the kind to Original and you'll get back exactly what you put in.
Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events.
Once exported, you can then trash the iPhoto Library - just drag it from the Pictures Folder to the trash and empty it.
After that, if you're entirely neurotic about it, just put the iPhoto app in the trash and empty it.

How to transfer folders from Windows Live Mail to Mac
I'm trying to export my mail folders from Windows Live Mail to my new Mac but I can't seem to be able to do it. When I export folders as windows live mail and then import them into the mail on mac, I only get the first email in the folder and not the rest. I'm having a nightmare - can anyone help?

Syncing contacts from Windows Live Mail
I have just bought a new ipad and am trying to sync my contacts from Windows Live Mail. I have found a previous post detailing what to do bit I get to a certain stage in the instructions and can't get any further. Here is the answer I found:
If you are using Windows Live Mail (online version) with Windows 7, here's what I did. Hope it helps someone.
Before you do the following steps, in Windows Live Mail, export your contacts as a CSV file and save it where you can easily locate it.
1. Click on the little WINDOWS Ball in the lower left-hand corner of your screen (this is the same as clicking START).
2. Type WAB in the search box. The first thing that comes up SHOULD BE a file called WAB.EXE. Double-click so it opens up—it may or may not be empty. This file is NOT the same file as the windows live file so don’t worry about overwriting anything.
3. Click IMPORT at the top of the screen.
4. Select CSV, then click IMPORT again. It will ask you to find the file you want to import. Find the backup you made.
5. Once it’s done importing, you should see all your contacts.
6. Plug in your Apple device—iphone/ipad.
7. iTunes will launch automatically. Give it a minute to completely load etc.
8. At the top of the screen you will see: SUMMARY INFO APPS MUSIC MOVIES TV SHOWS etc. etc.
9. Click on INFO
10. You will see ‘SYNC CONTACTS WITH’. Make sure there is a check in the box and that after ‘with’ you see WINDOWS CONTACTS. If you don’t see WINDOWS CONTACTS, click on the drop-down menu and select it.
11. Then click on SYNC at the bottom right-hand corner of your screen and let it run.
12. That’s it!

I got as far as number 9 where I clicked on INFO and it showed SYNC CONTACTS with some text, but not SYNC CONTACTS WITH and there were no boxes to check at all. Can anyone shed any light on what I should do next please?Hi,
Actually I don't have any problems with mails and calendars as both of them work back and forth with Windows Live Mail and IPad.
The problem is only with contacts. Once a new contact is created in my IPad it does not go in my Windows Live contact box.

Reader opens and closes immediately by itself when try to open PDF from windows live mail or browser
Hi,
I'm having problems with acrobat xi since installing it on my windows 7 computer.
Every time I try to open up a pdf file from windows live mail or a browser.. it opens and closes immediately. The only way I can view it is if I save the file onto the computer, open up acrobat reader first then open up the file in there.
How do I make it work properly again please?
I've tried several things so far like..
-Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
-Disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
Please help me. Thanks.How can I tell which one it is exactly? I think it is Acrobat Reader.. 11.0.10...
I can only open up a PDF if I save it to my computer and then open up the Acrobat program then open up a file using file > open.
But if I try and view a pdf from an email attachment in Windows Live Mail.. or from a browser... it will open and close immediately.

I recently added memory to my MacBook Pro so I could upgrade to Lion and use the cloud for my contact list. It's been a bit of a mess, since I use Entourage as my email program. The REAL problem I'm having now is that my iPhone 4 now won't sync. iTunes "quits unexpectedly" at stage 7 (of 8) in the syncing process, where it says it's importing photos. My iPhoto is '09, version 8.1.2 Is this not compatible with Lion?
I have the same problem. I'm suspecting a corrupt photo, but the logs don't give me a clue. Or maybe this version of iTunes needs some further tuning.

Firefox is my default browser and since the most recent Firefox update I have been unable to click through links I receive from Windows Live Email to the Firefox browser, but it works if my browser is set to IE9?? I have checked the defaults settings and both are fine, so Any explanations or ideas on how to solve this?
Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried, until the problem is resolved.
Step 1
Restart the router. Many problems are solved that way.
Step 2
Change the name of the wireless network, if applicable, to eliminate any characters other than letters and digits. You do that on your router via its web page, if it's not an Apple device, or via AirPort Utility, if it is an Apple device.
Step 3
Run the Network Diagnostics assistant.
Step 4
Back up all data.
Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Enter the name of your wireless network in the search box. You should have one or more "AirPort network password" items with that name. Make a note of the name and password, then delete all the items. Quit Keychain Access. Turn Wi-Fi off and then back on. Reconnect to the network.

Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.

Not able to get mail from windows live account.
Firefox can find plugins in several locations, but Firefox 21 changed the location of the "shared" plugin folder so older installers like the Microsoft Windows Media Plugin no longer drop the DLL file in the correct location.
There apparently are two ways to address this:
(1) Change a Firefox preference so that Firefox checks the old location. Here's how:
(i) In a new tab, type or paste '''about:config''' in the address bar and press Enter. Click the button promising to be careful.
(ii) In the filter box, type or paste '''plugins''' and pause while the list is filtered
(iii) Double-click '''plugins.load_appdir_plugins''' to switch its value from false to true.
This will take effect after you restart Firefox.
(2) Copy the plugins folder to the new location. Here's how on Win 7 64-bit:
Open a Windows Explorer window to:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
Right-click and copy the '''Plugins''' folder
Double-click the '''browser''' folder to open it
Right-click and paste
Right-click the new copy of '''Plugins''' and rename it to '''plugins'''
After restarting Firefox, the plugins in that folder should now be available.
