Importing photos in batches?
Is there a way to import multiple photos into iMovie's timeline all at once? I'd like to make a movie using an entire gallery, but seem to only be able to import them one at a time. Am I missing something?
Hey Chris! It's Also Chris! lol. it's been more than a whole year since anyone has responded on this specific support event, however i would like to 'quote on quote' bring it back to life, if you may. I have had iMovie for my iPhone 4 since about a couple of months ago and i had taken a bunch of photos and i wanted to add music to them and make a "iMovie Movie" out of them with different music on top of the photos. I was wondering, since there most likely has beenan update since July 2010, that if there was now a way to import a specific batch of photos into my iMovie timeline at once, which would make the job a ton easier. And really, isn't iMovie for iOS really supposed to grasp the whole mobile editiing aspect,... not the one picture at a time nonsense. lol. well i hope my answer will be good. Thanks again!

I have never had a problem importing photos into iPhoto. Just this last time, I can't see my last imported photos in my library. Not in Events or Photos. When I try to import them again I get the message that they have alreadly been imported. And they show up under Recent and "Last Import" I even flagged them from Last Import and shared them. But I can't see them in the library. Weird. This has never happened before.
Help.If they are in Last Import then they are in the library.
Right click on one in Last Import and select 'Show Event'
The usual explanation is the date on the camera is off, or the Event sorting is not what you expect.

IPhoto imports photos with wrong dates even if the dates are fine on the camera
Hi!
When I import photos with iPhoto, sometimes it imports them with wrong dates, even the dates are fine on the camera. It puts dates such as 2032. Does anyone know how can I fix that. As far as I know there is no way to change dates of the photos.
Thanks!well that is very confusing since if the date is correct on the camera it will be correct in iPhoto
and as to
As far as I know there is no way to change dates of the photos.
Try looking through your iPhto menus - two commands - adjust time and date and batch change time and date - asjust is used to correct incorrect dates like a comera setting - Batch change for missing dates like with scans

Can't import photos into iPhoto-- it sees them but won't import
I've been using iPhoto with my Mac Mini for almost a year now without a single issue (that's the main reason I bought a mac). I believe I have iPhoto 08 (I bought the computer 1 year ago). I have a newer Canon point-and-shoot that I've been using. About 1 month ago I did a software update to iPhoto, so it's pretty much up to date.
Everything has been fine for almost a year, then all the sudden, iPhoto hangs when I try to import my latest batch of photos. It will pull them into the import preview window (I can see all of them), but when I try to "Import All" it just hangs. I have to turn off the camera just to get the program to unfreeze (after patiently waiting a few minutes). For some odd reason, just 1 of the 70 photos makes it in (there are a few videos, but they won't import either).
Here's the error message:
Unreadable Files: 69
The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data).

Any ideas? I'm desperate because there's some wonderful picks of our kids on there that I don't want to lose.
Thanks a bunchIt’s part of the basic install of OS X. So unless you deleted it then it’s there in your apps folder. If you have deleted it, it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. You will be able to extract the installation package using Pacifist.
Alternatively, if you’re using almost any camera +apart from a Canon+ then the camera card is visible on the desktop and you can drag the movie to the desktop using the Finder and import from there.
No matter what camera you use, if you pop the card from it into a USB Card Reader then it will be accessible via the Finder. Card Readers are inexpensive and all round a better idea.
Why use a Card Reader?
Because it’s safer: Less risk of your images being lost if your camera shuts down during transfer.
Because it saves the battery on your camera
Because it saves wear and tear on your camera ports
Because it’s almost always faster.

When I import photos to my iMac, taken from my Windows PC using a flash drive, the photos in iPhoto are dated as the date last modified on PC instead of date picture taken.
Then you need to ask a PC forum how to export the photos there to include the Metadata (specifically the EXIF data)
If there is valid EXIF data iPhoto uses it (the EXIF data is originally added to the photo by the digital camera) and if there is no EXIF data then the only inofrmaiton IPhoto have available is the file metadata and that is what is used
You can correct the dates in iPhoto using the batch change data/time command

How to import photos from Mail to iPhoto and preserve the date created?
I have several photos sent to me via email attachments in Mail which I want to "add to iphoto." When I do this, the original date of the photo changes to "today's date."
When I drag the photo to the desk top, the file (photo) properties change and the date changes to "today's date."
Is there a way to import photos and preserve the original date the photo was taken? For example, if my family finally got around to sending me photos from 4th of July, I know the date is 7/4/2012, not today's date, 10/9/2012.
I want to avoid the time/work of doing batch changes on countless photos I want to add to iphoto.
iphoto 11
mail 5.3
Lion 10.7.5Larry, I need more information...
Using what you said, I ran some tests using photos taken with my digital camera in iPhoto. My photos show the following information in the "information" sidebar:
•type of camera
•Flash on
•Format size
•File size (MB)
•File type (jpeg)
•Frame "number"
•Month/day/year/hour/min/sec/AM-PM
Then I tried to email a photo to myself: I have tried: "share," "attach," "drag/drop" a photo into email and sent it to myself as a test. Once the photo arrives in my Mail inbox, I have tried various ways to add this "test" photo into iPhoto:
"Add to iphoto"
"drag into iphoto"
"export into iphoto"
Each time, iphoto created the photo with "today's date." In the past, I would get an alert: Photo already exists in iphoto, do you still want to import? Duplicate or Cancel
Can you elaborate on, "if the photo properties are present and correctly formatted then iPhoto uses them."
When I drag a photo to the desktop and double-click to preview the photo, the top of the preview window says:
P1009.jpg -- locked (gray lettering of the word "locked")
Is there a setting I need to change to "unlock" the properties of my photos?*
Thanks!!
MG
*My original post focuses on importing photos sent from other people. I am hoping if I can solve the matter with my own photos, other photos will import with original dates created, too. -
most times when I import photos from my desktop or dropbox to iPhoto, iPhoto will keep the title I created for the image as the display title under the image. but occasionally it displays the filename instead and I have to go back through and reenter the title in iPhoto. why the inconsistency? running OS 10.9.5 and using iPhoto 9.5.1
Try this: select one of the photos that are showing the wrong title and use the Photos ➙ Batch Change ➙ Title to File Name menu option.
See if that will put the name that you want under the thumbnail. -
Import photos from CD to iPhoto Album directly
Hi,
I am a new Mac user and happy to join the Apple community.
I have photos that are already organized into folders/subfolders and are stored in CD. Now what I would like to do is to directly import the photos to iPhoto Albums and keep the folder structures and names.
For example, say that I have 2 root folders(A and B) on the CD and folder A contains A1 and A2, folder B contains B1.
How do I make iPhoto automatically create Album named A which have A1 and A2 sub Albums when I copy/import the photo from the CD?
I have read tutorial about importing to last roll then drag drop photos to create new album. However, it will requires lots of work that way since I already have all the photos organized on disk.
Second question: Is it a good practice to go to Finder and copy the entire file structures into iPhoto library? Is there any tutorial that explains how Mac organize the file structure?
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help in advance

Mac OS X (10.4.5)
Mac OS X (10.4.5)Hi iMac User,
For your first question of keeping your own folder structure, you might want to check out iPhoto 6.
The following information can help you with iPhoto 5 and iPhoto 6 if you choose to import photos into iPhoto's database.
Importing Images from the hard drive, CD, or DVD
To import a folder with subfolders of images maintaining the same organizational structure (or close to it):
Drag the folder into iPhotos viewing area.
A film roll will be created with each sub folders name. To view the rolls in the Library you need to first go to the menu bar and choose View>by film rolls.
To make each roll into an Album, highlight the tile of the roll
Go to File>new album from selection.
You will now have an Album in the source column with the images from that roll. Do this for each roll if you want them to be an Album. This is your choice.
Next, go to the menu bar and hit File>new folder
Name this new folder with the year or whatever the name was of the Parent folder containing the subfolders that you had dragged into iPhotos viewing area.
Next drag all the Albums into the respective new Parent folder you just made.
Albums- collection of images from one roll or many rolls. The Albums will be listed in your source column when you make them. The albums only contain placeholders for the images that are still in the library. They are not duplicates.
Rolls- rolls are created when you import folder of images. It will be given the name of the folder you are importing.
Rolls are also created from each import from your camera. You are given the option to name the roll at import.
Folder-a folder you create manually using the File>new folder command
Folders can hold Albums, slideshows, books, another folder, etc.
One other way you can import a folder of images and have an Album created for it as the same time it is imported as a roll in the Library view:
Drag each folder of images into the source column of iPhoto. When you see the plus sign, drop it in the source column.
An album will be created in the source column, and the roll that the album was created from will be in the library view window.
Hope this helps!
answer to second question:
Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
About the iPhoto Library folder
File structure of iPhoto 5 Library in the Finder:
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.
File structure of iPhoto Library 6 folder in Finder:
iPhoto 6 Library folder in the Finder
As you can see the structure is now related to rolls. Rolls are created for each folder you import and each import session from a camera.
It is very easy to change the names of film rolls within iPhoto to make them easier to find images within. Open the info panel in iPhoto by clicking on the "i" icon. Once it is opened, click on the roll title in the viewing window.
Click on the word "title" in the info pane and type in your new title. I like to use a date and text format such as 12/25/05 Christmas at Mom's, 1/05/06 my birthday, etc. Once the roll names are changed within iPhoto, they are also changed within the Finder, making it easy to locate an image.
When importing from a camera, make sure you name the roll with a date and text before the import.
A lot more info that you might need to know:
--First thing to know and remember is this...Do not drag any images, folder of images into the iPhoto Library in the Finder. Images have to be imported into iPhoto within the application. Do not scan images and save them into the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. Save them to another location such as the Pictures folder or even the desktop. You can then import them into iPhoto.
If you have already put files/folders in the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder then you will also find out that if you try to import them into iPhoto you will get an error message. No worry, just drag them to the desktop and import from there.
--All images that you import are shown in the library view. You can choose how you want to view, by rolls, by date, by rating, etc. When you put images in an Album, slideshow, book, etc, you are actually just putting pointers to those images in the library. You are not adding more images. If you delete an image from the Album it will still be in the library. If you delete an image from the library it is deleted from iPhoto's database and your hard drive (unless you have it backed up somewhere else)
--You have a folder of images on your hard drive and want to import them into iPhoto. Drag the folder of images into an open iPhoto Library window and the folder of photos will be copied into the library, resulting in a new roll with the name of the folder. You now have two copies of those photos, the ones in iPhoto's database and the ones on your desktop. You can keep the ones on your desktop that you just imported as backup or you can delete that folder.
-- you scan a picture/pictures and save it in a folder. You cannot scan directly into iPhoto or the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder.
You want all your photos in iPhoto so you import them into iPhoto.
Now you have two copies of that picture/pictures, so you can delete the originals that were in the scanned folder and keep the one/ones that were imported into iPhoto.
-- You download pictures from your camera into iPhoto.
There is now one copy of each of the pictures. (DO NOT HAVE IPHOTO DELETE THE IMAGES FROM YOUR CAMERA! DELETE THEM MANUALLY WITH THE CAMERA-if something goes wrong with the import and they are never imported and then they are deleted from the camera you might end up losing those images)
You want to change something about a picture you imported, such as
cropping it or changing the size, or changing the orientation.
Once you do that to a picture, you now have two copies of the picture
in iPhoto, the original and the edited one. The edited one will be in the library organize view. The original is packed away in an Original folder in your iPhoto Library folder under the date of the roll. You can always revert to the original by control clicking on the photo and choose "revert to orginal" You will not have this choice if you used iPhoto Diet to get rid of the Originals.
(a quick note on cropping within iPhoto...when you are in edit mode, you automatically will be in the crop mode with cross hairs to highlight the crop area. To finish cropping you must click the crop button and then go back to library view and your cropped picture will be there.
3.You want to use Photoshop or another graphic program to edit a picture in your iPhoto library.
You can open up prefs for iPhoto and choose "when double clicking on
photo ..do" choose "other" and select Photoshop. Now you can edit all
pictures in your iPhoto library in PhotoShop by double clicking. If you save the photo with the same name and as a flattened file it will be saved right into iPhoto and you will see the changes. If you don't want to save it into iPhoto then do a "save as" and save to the desktop. You will then have the original photo still in iPhoto and your new edited photo on the desktop.
Or, with iPhoto open, you can drag a picture from the library window
to your desktop (you see a + sign on the pic you are dragging). You now
have two of the same picture, one in the iPhoto library and one on your desktop. You can open up the one on your desktop in any graphic program and work on it. The one in iPhoto stays the same. You can also share/export the picture/pictures to your desktop or folder to work on them or do batch processing, etc. You will still have the originals in your iPhoto Library.
Or, you can open up the ~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/folders and option drag any
picture out of the folder to your desktop. Notice that you will see a plus sign while dragging the photo. This is copying the file to your desktop
I would advise anyone not to do this as they might forget to use the option key and drag the photo out. Next time you open iPhoto the photo will be missing.
Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
About the iPhoto Library folder
Don't forget that in Library view you can Control click on any picture and get a contextual menu with many options. One is to revert to original. -

Using camera accessory, I have imported photos to my iPad 3rd generation. By mistake I have imported multiple copies of same photos. Now if I want to delete additional copies I can't. It gives me only one option "Delete everywhere" instead of delete one by one, so that I can keep one copy of that photo.

Can anyone tell me how to merge my iPhoto Library into my Photos System Library or how to import photos from iPhoto to Photos?
How many did you trash at one go? iPhoto will baulk and possibly corrupt if you try trash too many at one go. Expereinced users recommend getting rid of them in batches of about 100 or so.
What's your plan for the remaining images in the iPhoto Library (the 2k photos and 4 videos)?

11 libSystem.B.dylibWhy not try in batches? When you import to iPhoto the pics are copied to the library, the metadata - Exif, IPTC and colour - parsed and recorded, thumbnails created, Scanned for Faces, Places and so on. So while it might well be supported on a multi-core MacPro with 16 gigs of RAM it seems likely to me that on a MB it may choke on 17k of images. Only way to test is to import in Batches, of course.

Retrieving overwritten imported photos
Hi, I imported some photos I took with a friend's camera, and I neglected to fill in the boxes to name the event etc. (This is the first time I've ever imported photos from a camera.) After importing a few photos I saw there were a few more on the camera so I selected those photos and hit "import" again. Both times I checked the box to delete the photos from the camera. The first batch that I imported now seems to have vanished into thin air, while the second batch is in the "Last Import" file. Is there any way to retrieve the first batch, or should I just forget about it? Thanks.
Jay:
In the Event mode look for the first batch of photos. They should be there based on the date they were taken. You can also set the iPhoto's preferences to change the Recent item Last X months to just one month and look there for the photos.
If that first batch was truly deleted from iPhoto then you'll need a 3rd party application like MediaRECOVER to recover the photos from the memory card.
This is a perfect example of why it's best to NOT have iPhoto delete the photos and do it manually with the camera after you've established that the import was successful.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard. -
i have an older version of iphoto (7.1.5). I have never had a problem with importing photos til today. I ried importing a new batch of photos from my iphoe, and when the proess was complete, the photos (and events) were nowhere to be found. I then tried updating all my software and tried the process again. it seemed like they were being imported but after I click "keep originals" the photos are not there. I have: iphoto 7.1.5; itunes 10.4.1; Mac OS X 10.5.8. Thanks!
Thanks, I found the photos!
