Importing Photos in Order Taken in InDesign

I usually have no problem importing/ placing photos in the order they were taken, but suddenly they are importing in apparently random order- not by name and not by date modified. How can I solve this problem? Thank you.

Steve is selecting the files by clicking them in a certain order. When he places them they are in the ORDER OF SELECTION in the File > Place dialog box.
Emily is expecting InDesign to place the files in ORDER OF DATE CREATED OR MODIFIED. Whatever method Emily uses to select and place the files, InDesign is placing them in filename order. So, renaming them with the desired sequence number should solve the problem.
Now, how to rename so many files? Adobe Bridge to the rescue!
Adobe Bridge is a free file browser and manager that was installed with with InDesign versions through CS6. Search Google for terms like "adobe bridge batch rename filename order" without quotes, for details on renaming with Bridge. Beginning with Creative Cloud, you need to download and install it manually from the Adobe.com site.

    I have scanned and numbered photos in sequence, i.e. 001, 002, etc. so that when I import them they are in order, but it never seems to work. When I download from a digital camera it does usually import them in sequence, but not scanned images or images I've renamed. Is there a way to import photos into iPhoto and keep the sequence???

    Are you numbering them in the order they were created? If not that's probably reason. Check the sorting of the Event and change it to sort by Title. Then they should be in the order you want.

    TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
    I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

    I hope some of you super smart MacBook Pro users will be able to help me...
    I just made the switch from a windows laptop to a Macbook Pro, and while I am very happy with my decision, I am still working on that learning curve.
    I am a photographer who uses Adobe Bridge to cull photos (by giving them star ratings) and Adobe Photoshop to process. I recently shot a wedding using two different cameras simultaneously.  I synced the time on the cameras prior to starting the shoot so that the photos of the entire day would be sorted in time order when saving them and burning them onto a disc.
    I used three memory cards throughout the day and processed all of the photos off one card before moving on to the next, so the photos were not processed in chronological order. I shoot in RAW and run batches that save the final photo as JPEG.
    I would like to burn these files to a disc in chronological order. I have created a folder in Finder where all of the photos are located. I am unable to sort the files by DATE TAKEN. There is an option for DATE CREATED, but the date it shows is the date the JPEG file was created, not the date the photo was taken. When I click on a file and look at its file info, the DATE TAKEN is not shown, just this same date that the JPEG file was created. However, when I look in Photoshop at the file info, the DATE CREATED is indeed the actual time that the photo was snapped during the wedding.
    Does anyone know how I can get this information into Finder? Is there another "Explorer" type software I should be using to make this work? Is there a better way to burn files to disc than using Finder?

    I only have iPhoto but I have imported two different sd cards into iphoto and then merged the events into one event and iPhoto arranged them in cronological order even though the raw file names were different. then I exported the event to a file and burned them. if you have the sd cards with the original photos maybe this will work for you

    Try the following: drag the CD with the photo into the sidebar of iPhoto creating an album as it imports the files. Then check the album to see what the order is. If it's not what you want set the sort to manual, arrange them in the order you want and the Batch Change->Date to whatever date you want with 1 minute intervals between images. You can have that date and time written to the original files or not. Then in any event that's sorted by date ascending they will be in the original order from the CD.
    I'm guessing they are in alphanumerical order as that's the order the Finder users.

  • Why can't I import photos saved onto my iphone hard drive onto my computer to delete them off my phone?

    Every time I try to import photos onto iphoto I am only allowed to import photos I have taken on my iphone 5s, but not from my previous phone. I cannot upgrade my phone because I have so many photos on it. I want to delete the photos that were transferred onto my iphone from my previous phone, but I can't find them using my laptop.

    I am struggling with similar difficulties.
    I use an iMac G5 (Power PC) and a Canon PowerShot G6, which have been compatible with each other for 14 months. A couple of weeks ago, the Canon's rechargable battery ran low and, instead of connecting the camera to the iMac via the USB cable, I removed the SanDisk CompactFlash Ultra II card and imported photos on it via a SanDisk upload USB device. [The G6 manual recommends connecting the camera only when the battery is fully charged.] After the battery recharged, I took more photos and tried to upload them via the original Canon-supplied USB cable, but iPhoto did not launch. Because the camera turns on and indicates it's connected , I know it's not the USB cable [I actually ordered a new one, but the results are the same]. I've tried reformatting the SanDisk card in the camera, but this hasn't corrected the problem. However, if I connect the SanDisk device with card to the USB hub, iPhoto launches, identifying the device as "CANON_DC", complete with the little "eject" icon.
    What am I forgetting? What would be the next step? Reinstalling the Canon software?

    I'm trying to get all files off my brother's old ipad before restoring it. I imported photos onto my computer using iphoto, but it didn't import the photos in the "photostream" on the ipad- why not?     Let me try and explain it this way.
    Say I have taken ten pictures, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10
    These were imported to iPhoto and went into an event it created called June 2013 Photostream. They were all imported and showed up in order 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10
    Some of them I have now tagged faces in etc.
    When I go back now and look in the June 2013 Photostream I only see 1,3,4,5,6,9,10
    But if I look in the last 12 months album I still see 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 in the right place and the right order
    Pictures 5,6,7,8 all had my face tagged and when I look in my face album 5,6,7,8 all show in the right place in the right order.
    I have got iPhoto to rebuild the library etc and they do not go back to showing in the Photostream import folder.

    You have to open up "my computer" on your computer. Notice the new removable disk with a letter. This is your phone. Now, on your computer, open the new disk up and scroll down to the DCIM file and open up "camera". Here are your pictures. You can also open up "Thumbnails." Now you have to drag and drop the pictures you want to export from here to whatever file you want to put them in on your computer. It's a simple drag and drop operation.

  • Import photos are out of order

    I hope I can explain this so it makes sense.  I am trying to import photos from a compact flash card.  When they come into Lightroom they are out of order.  I have tried sorting them by all the different means in the drop down but still are not correct.  I notice that for some reason some of the photos show incorrect dates and that seems to be what is affecting the import.  Lightroom is putting the photos from the oldest date first.  I was able to load the pictures into a folder on the desktop and they are in the correct order just using the camera file names.  When I tried to load them from that folder into Lightroom, they went back to the incorrect order.  Is there a way to import without the metadata?  Is that what is fouling this up?  I don't know where these weird dates have come from but they are there and I can't get rid of them.
    I am running Lightroom on an imac with OS 10.4.11 and this is the first I have run into this problem.  These photos are from an older camera, a Nikon Coolpix 885 and are my son's photos.  I normally import from my Canon camera using a compact flash with a reader  and have never had such a problem.  Here I am talking up Lightroom to my son about how easy it is to get the photos in and organize them and he is not buying it at this point.  Hopefully this makes sense and someone knows what is going on.

    The date information is taken from the camera which writes it to the file. This needs to be set to the correct date and time in the camera itself.
    The order the images are shown in the Library mode is set by clicking on the sort button in the tool bar, which if not showing can be activated from view, tool bar. There are different sort orders that can be applied including sorting by file name. You can also sort by dragging the images to the order you wish them to appear in by selecting user order.

    Your camera uses an OLympic XD picture card http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-xD-Picture-Memory-202332-package/dp/B002LC2DQ4/ref =pd_sim_sbs_p_1 This card has different dimensions compared to an SD card.
    You should be able to plug the cable that came with your camera into the camera connection kit to import the pics.

    Consider using sshfs to mount your Pi from your Linux boxes.  It's much easier to configure and manage than samba.  It sounds like you already have your Windows machines mounting your Pi so Samba is doing its job in that respect.

    To help get you off the dime, here's a modified line from my fstab that I use to mount my Pi with:
    gav@PI:/mnt/backup /mnt/rpi/backup fuse.sshfs rw,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,allow_other 0 0
    Subsitute my mount points with yours.
    For a password-less mount:
         ssh-copy-id gav@PI
    after you've set up ssh and generated some keys on your client box.
    Here are some relevant lines from the smb.conf file on my Pi that I use for my one Windows box in the house that might help you with your write permissions:
       security = user
      hosts allow = 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0

    I realise you can you can delete them on your ipod slowly as you have to click on each one, and you can restore your ipod, but surely there is a way to get around this?

    Not a problem when using iPhoto on a Mac, which the transfer of photos is primarily based on - not manually managing photo storage as seems to be common with Windoze.
    The same should be available with a supported photo management app on a PC.

    The date on the photo could be anything because you can edit the date with iPhoto or any of 100 apps, free and paid for. So, the date on the photo will prove nothing, I'm afraid.
