Importing photos with Aperture?

I was able to import photos from my iPhone into Aperture on the first try, but now every time I plug in the phone, Aperture claims that there aren't any photos on the iPhone to import.
I also tried importing with Image Capture, and it doesn't see any photos either. Any ideas? I know the photos are on the phone and haven't been imported yet. My iPhone did crash once when taking a picture, so maybe that corrupted something?
Anyone else have any issues like this?

Interesting, I finally came up with a solution. Here's the order of events:
1. Plug in iPhone and open iTunes (or have it already open).
2. Open Image Capture or Aperture and attempt to import photos - it will claim that there aren't any photos to import.
3. Eject iPhone from iTunes.
4. Both Aperture and Image Capture still claim 0 pictures it import.
5. Take a picture on the iPhone.
6. Now both Image Capture and Aperture can see all the pictures you've taken on the iPhone.
7. Unplug and re-plug the USB cable so iTunes sees the iPhone again.
8. Now Image Capture and Aperture won't be able to see the photos again - repeat previous steps to make the photos visible again.
This seems like a *bug* to me.

  • After upgrade to IOS8 can't import photos from Aperture

I upgraded to IOS8, reset my iPad to factory settings and reinstalled all my apps from scratch.
When go into iTunes and I select to import photos from Aperture on my Mac it hangs.
I have an old iPhoto library on my Mac and if I select photos from that it works.
I have switched off everything to do with iCloud after seeing some posts that this might be causing the problem, but not a solution for me.
(I have over 28,000 photos in my Aperture library).

Did you turn on iCloud Photo Library? I suspect it may remove the ability to sync photos and videos between Macs and iOS devices.

  • When importing photos from aperture photos are blurry

I have been making a video and up to now no problems. Then today i was working on it and when i started adding some more photos from aperture they were fuzzy and blurry.
In aperture they are crisp and clear but the minute i put them in imovie they are blurry and not useable.
I have imported photos from aperture and iphoto both and had no issues so not sure what is going on today.

I think I just figured this out.
Go into Aperture preferences and go to "previews" tab.  Set "photo preview" to "don't limit" and turn the quality all the way up.  Then select all your photos, go to the "photos" menu, hold down the option key and click "generate previews".
It appears that the library sharing is just using the generated previews from Aperture which default to poor quality.  You need to turn up the quality and then force a re-render of all your previews.  iMovie should pick this up (but won't update your slideshow...).
Yeah, I'm pretty disappointed by those defaults.   Wasted hours of my time as I rebuilt the slideshow with better versions of my photos.
    Hope that helped.

  • Cannot import photos from aperture

Up until yesterday I've had no problems importing photos from Aperture (3.1.3) during the iPhone (4.3.5) sync process. Now iTunes (10.4.1) presents me with a dialogue window containing the following message: "The iPhone "xxx" cannot be synced. The required file cannot be found." The photo files are there in Aperture. If I uncheck all of the detail boxes, but leave the "Sync Photos from Aperture" box checked the sync process completes successfully, but no photos were copied to the iPhone because none were selected. I've rebooted the iMac, etc. And, of course, if I leave the "Sync Photos from Aperture" box unchecked the sync process completes successfully.
    What am I missing?
    Thanks,
    George

I thought my core issue was that my single library has this iPhoto icon associated with it.  I'd prefer it to be considered as an Aperture library.
Are you looking at the correct libary in the Finder? That icon is puzzling.
What are the versions of iPhoto and Aperture that you are using?
If you have upgraded your photolibrary by the latest versions of Aperture (Aperture 3.4.5) and iPhoto (iPhoto 9.4.3) the icon should be the same for both iPhoto libraries and Aperzure libraries. If you are not yet using the latest version, consider to upgrade, because you are missing out on some bug fixes.
The "Kind" displayed in the Finder will depend on the filename extension. A library created by iPhoto should have the extension "photolibrary" and the Aperture libraries "aplibrary".
Check also the settings in Image Capture:
In Image Capture you can set the application to open for each device individually. It might be possible, that you have set a diffrent application to open in Image Capture: I have set all my devices to "No Application" in "Image Capture". This way I can decide, if I want to open iTunes or Aperture, when I connect my iPad or iPod.
If you are really troubled by the "Kind = Photo Library" you can convert that by importing the iPhoto Library into a new, empty Aperture Library. Then Aperture will set up the internal database files with the "Kind = Aperture Library".

  • When importing photos with iBooks Gallery widget, is anyone aware of a technique for simultaneously importing the photo's description (or jpeg file name) and writing it into the iBook Author caption field for the imported photo?

When importing photos with the iBooks Author Gallery widget, is anyone aware of a technique for simultaneously importing the photo's description (or jpeg file name) and writing it into the iBook Author caption field for the corresponding imported photo? I have 4,800 stills to import and can't imagine it's necessary to copy and paste the description for each.

As always, feel free to use the 'Provide iBooks Author Feedback' menu item for features you'd like added in the future, etc.

  • When trying to import photos with iPhoto from photoshop.. won't let me keeps saying that the photos are already in the iPhoto library but they are not... need to fix this

When trying to import photos with iPhoto from photoshop... won't let me keeps saying that the photos are already in the iPhoto library but they are not

If you are using Photoshop from within iPhoto the following may help with the workflow.  However, we do need to know the answers to the questions posed by Terence and Larry to be able to help you.
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
    Screenshots are from PSE 10
Note 1:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.
Note 2:  editing a RAW file with either PSE or PS creates a new file which must be saved outside of iPhoto, i.e. the Desktop, and imported as a new photo into the iPhoto Library.

  • IMovie Crashing when importing photo with Ken Burns Effect

iMovie is crashing all the time when I am trying to import a photo with Ken burns effect using media browser and hitting "apply". Is this a known problem ? If I dont apply Ken Buruns effect then it imports it fine.
I am trying to put Photo at the begining of my project ( and then put title on that photo). If I have any clip in the begining and then try importing photo with ken burn's effect then it is not crashing, but it still does not import it. I click "apply" and it does soemthing , I can see the clip in timeline for a sec and then it disappears. So either way, cant use any photos anywhere with Ken Burn's effect. Whats going on?
I have more than enough space available on my HDD and I do not think there is any conflicting QT plugins I have ( It's all default Install). This is so consistent that it seems like a Bug but can't find this exact case mentioned anywhere in discussions.
    Powerbook G4 12.1" 1.5Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Welcome to the forum! And thanks for such an insightful post.
    I have two guesses here:
o The Ken Burns code of iMovie has a problem with partitions
o The Ken Burns code of iMovie has a problem with access rights
I've never seen a Ken Burns problem with partitions (I've used multiple partitions for years with no problems). I suspect that's not the cause.
But I think you've hit the nail on the head that iMovie may have a problem with permissions/access rights. I don't know exactly what the problem is — or whether it's caused by iMovie or OSX — but there is behavior that suggests something isn't right.
I suspect the issue, whatever it is, causes a failure to save the rendered Ken Burns clip inside the project package. The red bar runs, but the rendered clip isn't saved to disk. My guess is OSX refuses to allow iMovie to save the file for OSX doesn't believe YOU have permission.
One would think that using the Finder to set the permissions of the project package would solve the problem, but it doesn't seem to.
    There are two possible solutions:
    1. Set the partition to ignore permissions. In the Finder, click on the partition and Get Info. Turn ON the checkbox "Ignore permissions on this volume";
    2. Use Disk Utility to reformat (erase) the partition. Somehow that seems to fix the problem.
Here's some history which may suggest another solution: In an earlier version of iMovie a similar problem occurred, where iMovie would refuse to open a project. It had somehow decided you didn't have permission to edit the project.
The only solution was to use the Finder to create a new set of project folders — a folder and all the folders it normally contains — then Option-drag the FILES of the original project folder to the appropriate folders. (Option-dragging COPIED the files instead of moving them.) The new project folder would now open normally.
If you are adept at working with packages, you might try creating your own package (which contains all the normal folders) then Option-drag the files of the problem project to your package.
Once I saw an error -52 announcement, but it was not reproducible.
Error -52 is a "Get file position error", which (may) suggest a disk directory error. That may be a disk issue unrelated to iMovie. You might want to consider using Disk Utility to Verify/Repair that partition.
I have a separate partition for the movies and made a
link from my home account to the directory with the
movies on that partition. iMovie works correctly
except for the Ken Burns photo rendering.
I'm never sure whether creating such a link is a good idea or not, especially for the iLife apps. Some apps don't resolve the alias as they should, which creates other problems. A "Movies" alias sends iDVD a million miles beyond Jupiter, for example, where the iDVD project joins the space dust.
For iMovie projects saved on partitions and external drives, I just save them inside a "iMovie 6 Projects" folder on that drive. (Every new version of iMovie gets a new folder.) For convenience, I may create aliases to help navigate there, but do nothing else. Everything just works.
If you figure out something new, please say.

  • Aperture won't import photo with a tilde (~) in filename

I imported my photo library from iPhoto to Aperture (3.0.1) but noticed 533 photos were missing. Even using Import -> Show iPhoto Library, and then dragging the missing Events or photos into Aperture would not work. Aperture was missing some entire iPhoto Events, and then missing some random photos from within other Events.
After staring at it long enough, I finally noticed that all 533 seemingly unrelated photos all have a tilde (~) in their filename. My old Canon handheld (or some old Canon software) automatically put a tilde in the filename of these photos. Although the Aperture import function can see these photos and display their filename (i.e. 102-02~9), Aperture will not import them. When I try to import one of these Events or photos, Aperture creates an empty Project. iPhoto, Finder, and PhotoShop don't have any problems with a tilde, and I don't see any restriction against it in the User Manual.
I had to export these iPhoto photos into a folder, and batch rename them so their filename does not have a "~" in it, and then import them into Aperture. This will keep the EXIF data, but it will strip any keywords -- but those can be added during the import. Although you can batch change titles in iPhoto, I couldn't figure out how to change the iPhoto filename, which seems to be causing the problem.
I submitted an Aperture bug report.

I had to export these iPhoto photos into a folder, and batch rename them so their filename does not have a "~" in it, and then import them into Aperture. This will keep the EXIF data, but it will strip any keywords -- but those can be added during the import.
File -> Export. Check the box at 'Title and Keywords' in iPhoto and the keywords will be written to the file.
Although you can batch change titles in iPhoto, I couldn't figure out how to change the iPhoto filename, which seems to be causing the problem.
File -> Export, using the Title as Filename is one of the options in the resulting dialogue in iPhoto. Select it from the Drop down at Filename...

  • Problem Importing Photos from Aperture 3 into iPhoto '11

I store my photos in Aperture 3, but import them into iPhoto to create calendars, cards, etc. I usually work with RAW or high resolution JPG images in Aperture. However, when I import these into the new iPhoto '11, it automatically converts my RAW images into very low resolution images (e.g., 100-200k instead of at least 1-2MB). I cannot seem to find an option to change this. This was not a problem with the old iPhoto. To import, I start in iPhoto, then click "Show Aperture Library", then drag my photos/folder. I would like to have an option to import images as RAW files, or just high res JPGs.
I know I can export my Aperture images to the desktop, then import them into iPhoto for a temporary fix, but that is such as hassle, especially since iPhoto and Aperture are supposed to work well together. Thanks for any suggestions!

Aperture creates preview images that contain all the adjustments you've made to the master image. These previews are what is shared with other apps such as iLife or if you drag and drop an image out of Aperture to another app or the Finder.
The size of the previews is controlled in Aperture Preferences. Open Aperture Preferences and click on the Previews icon at the top. In the bottom of this dialog there is a popup menu titled "Photo Preview". This is the setting that controls the size of the image Aperture shares with iPhoto. Change this setting to the size you want.
But wait, you're not done yet. Changing this setting does nothing until a new preview is created in Aperture. If you right click an image in Aperture there is a menu item near the bottom named "Update Preview". But what you really need is "Generate Preview". Right click the image and then hold down the option key and you'll see "Update Preview" change to "Generate Preview". Choose "Generate Preview" and a new preview will be created using the new size setting you made in Preferences. You need to do this for each and every image you wish to share at the larger size. You can select multiple images before selecting the "Generate Preview" command to speed things up.
Now when you share an image from Aperture to iPhoto the new larger file will be used. The advantage of smaller previews is your Aperture library will also be smaller but the trade off is what you get in other apps that are using your images.
