Importing PNG from Server causes Illustrator to freeze up

Hello,
My client is having a bit of a strange issue with importing of PNG files. She is running an IMac version 10.7.3  and Adobe Creative Suite Design Pro 5.5 (I beleive)  They are in a windows network environment and access files hosted on a windows 2003 server.
Today she showed me first hand; opening up a connection to the server and proceeding to a particular shared drive that features a slew of images in a variety of formats including jpgs, gifs, tiffs, png etc.
She would drag and drop a particular file from the window to Illustrator and it would instantly freeze up, beachball, and require a force close.
I had her copy the file to her desktop and do the same thing, drag it onto the stage and bam, worked no problem.
Is there any reason for it to only happen when coming directly off of the server? She tried with a variety of other file formats and there was no issue. I hadn't tried opening the same file in photoshop or indesign yet, but I'm perplexed at why its only in PNG format that its having trouble with?
Is there some compatibility problem that maybe I'm not seeing here?
Would appreciate any ideas as I'm scratching my head with this one.
Thank you for reading and for any replies!!
V

Hi Scott,
Thanks for your reply.
I was unaware actually that it is not best practise to open directly off of the server. I'm a windows guy at the core, so this is pretty surprising to me as I've never found there to be issues like this with Windows, however since this issue is on a Mac I figured there may be some other reason behind it.
In their environment they have 6 macs and they all operate in this way.. connect to the server using Finder, and open files (.ai, osd, jpeg, etc) directly from several different network locations. This is the first instance I've heard of from any of these users where doing so has caused freezing like this, which is why I found it a bit odd that it was only PNG files in particular. Other users have no issues at all when opening any file direct from the server.
Though working this way may not be supported, would there be any suggestions for other ways I could look to address this issue? At the moment the user is doing as you had suggested.. copying to the local machine and then uploading once the file edits are complete. If there is no workaround then certainly I'll try to get this user to continue working this way but still a bit perplexed why the issue is isolated to this single user.
Thanks

    CS6  Just upgraded my mac to Yosemite but now can't import graphics from photoshop to illustrator.  Does anyone have a solution?

    My advice to you is, if you can, drop back to Mavericks. You will have better luck since CS4 is not supported (nor are CS5 or CS5.5) on Yosemite. The other alternative is to uninstall the entire suite, run the cleaner tool and reinstall completely from the original discs or a new download. Be prepared for other fun stuff as well.

    LEARN OWB !
    1. I havent heard of BD2 i only know DB2(if thats what you are referring to).
    2. Create a repository under NON-ORacle ==> DB2 in design center.
    3. create setup locations in connection explorer(under non-oracle).
    4. Import the metadata.
    5. create mappings.
    6. create a control centre location
    7. deploy mappings
    8. execute your mappings(if required use schedules and process flows)..

  • Cannot import .png file created in Illustrator CS5 to FCP7

    FCP gives me a "file errror: unknown file" message and will not let me import the .png
    any help is much appreciated.

    Also, TARGAs work fine from Photoshop CS5 - they keep the Alpha channel for transparency. I think going through Photoshop (Illustrator --> Photoshop --> FCP) is best, I have not tried getting stuff from Illustrator directly to Final Cut. Remember Final Cut is pixel-based like Photoshop, while Illustrator is vector-based. You have to 'convert' vectors to pixels and Photoshop seems to be better than Illustrator... and stick to Final Cut 7 or earlier for layered support, as reelstuff1 says
    Best of luck!

  • Error 0x80070057 when importing VM from Server 2008R2 to Server 2012 R2

    Hello.  I am using SCVMM 2012 to export a Windows 7 desktop from a 2008R2 HyperV server, to a 2012R2 HyperV server.  The job fails at step 1.5 (Import Hyper-V virtual machine) in the SCVMM log.  The error message is:
    Error (2901)
    The operation did not complete successfully because of a parameter or call sequence that is not valid.  the parameter is incorrect (0x80070057)
    Recommended Action
    Ensure that the parameters are valid, and then try the operation again.
    I've found the KB968968 regarding "ScopeOfResidence" and that isn't the problem here.  the EXP file that is created on my target server has no data between the [VALUE][/VALUE] tags for this element.
    When I try to manually import from the target server using HyperV manager rather than SCVMM, I browse to the folder where the VHD and subfolders containing the EXP file are located and I get "Hyper-V did not find virtual machines to import from location
    "G:\my\path\to\this\VHD" "  Same thing when I browse to any subordinate folder such as the Virtual Machines folder or the GUID folder underneath that.

    Hello Connor,
    Please advise if you followed below best practices?
    If you are upgrading from Hyper-V 2008/R2 to Hyper-V 2012 R2.
    The first option is to Shut down all Hyper-V virtual machines on the WS2008R2 host, then stop the Hyper-V Virtual Machine Management service. Finally copy all virtual machines that you want to migrate to WS2012R2 Hyper-V host, and then Import the Virtual
    Machines.
    The second option is, if you already exported the VMs and you don’t have 2008R2 Hyper-V host anymore.
    The exported Hyper-V virtual machines from 2008 R2 host copy them into Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V and import them, then simple copy the VMs to Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V and import them. The server with Hyper-V 2012 is only used to perform the import
    process thus allowing the VM to be copied into Hyper-V 2012 R2.
    The reason why is the following:
    In Windows Server 2012 Microsoft introduced a new WMI namespace (root\virtualization\v2) which is much better import/export model – allowing you to effectively just copy the virtual machine folder (with the VM’s XML configuration file inside it) as well
    as the VM’s VHDs and then import them directly. Microsoft maintained version 1 WMI namespace in Windows 2012 which is allowed for importing Windows Server 2008/R2 VM’s on 2012.
    In Windows Server 2012 R2 Microsoft removed the old version 1 namespace which means we can’t import directly virtual machines that were exported from Windows Server 2008/R2.
    Hope this help.

  • Importing text from large Word document ID freeze

    I'm converting a large Word document to PDF via InDesign and when I import the text from the Word doc, ID always freezes.
    I want to preserve the styles and formatting in the text but unfortunately the freeze occurs at the beginning where the Placing Microsoft Office Word 2007 document progress bar shows either "Processing character attributes..." or "Processing table attributes..."
    My problem is that it is such a large document with lots of italics, bolds and styles that I would like to take over to InDesign in order to speed up the design process.

    RTF will be fine and will retain all the Bold and Italic and other styles. RTF stands for RICH TEXT FORMAT and I think it's better than the standard .doc saved from Word; for importing to InDesign.
    Try these steps.
    In Word:
    File>Save As
    Choose RTF (that way you are not overwriting the original file)
    In InDesign:
    Start a new document - completely blank - don't worry about page size (A4 will do) and don't worry about margins (standard margins will do)
    Use File>Place and import the RTF file you just saved
    If that imports ok - then select all the text
    File>Export and choose RTF (rich text format)
    Now use that new RTF to import to your layout
    (there is no need to worry about images, you should reimport all  images that are in Word through File>Place; if you have any images in  your Word document. Make sure you use the same source file as when you  placed into Word)
    The reasons for the steps above is because there is a lot of unnecessary styles made with Word - and importing to InDesign and a fresh Export to RTF makes a cleaner file to use with InDesign.
    Have a look at  this too - http://www.paperspecs.com/mainblog/degunkifying-word-files/

  • Importing Mail from Server

    Hi there,
    I just updated to tiger and to mail 2.1. Now I get the following message when opening email that came in Before the upgrades:
    The message from ---email address here--- concerning “message title here” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.
    The strange this that the older version of mail I was using was set to download messages from the server.
    How do I get a hold of my old email?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi sherships.
    Not sure what you mean. You “updated to tiger” from what? Did you upgrade from Mac OS X 10.3 or earlier maybe?
    Software update, upgrade--what's the difference?
    The conversion from Mail 1.x to Mail 2.x is broken. Take a look at the following thread to better understand the problem:
    Help! "You need to take this account online in order to download it."
    More specifically, if this is a POP account, the following procedure should allow you to fix the Inbox problem. A similar procedure should allow you to fix other mailboxes that might also be affected:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to fix the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Create a new folder on the Desktop and name it however you wish (e.g. Inbox Old). It doesn’t need to have an .mbox extension.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/.
    5. Move the files mbox and Incoming_Mail out of INBOX.mbox, into the Inbox Old folder just created on the Desktop. These files contain all the messages that were in the mailbox before the upgrade to Tiger, and maybe even some messages that had been deleted. mbox is the most important. Incoming_Mail may or may not be present.
    6. Move any strangely-named Messages-T0x... folders to the Desktop (not into the Inbox Old folder). These folders are to be deleted after fixing the problem. They are temporary folders created during an import or an indexing process, and Mail should have deleted them when done. Their presence is a clear indication that something didn’t work as expected. If you’ve been using Mail after the conversion and have already tried to fix the problem by rebuilding the mailbox or something like that, they might contain messages that are neither in Messages proper nor in the mbox file, so keep them around until the problem is fixed.
    7. Move everything else within INBOX.mbox, except the Messages folder, to the Trash.
    The result of the above should be that INBOX.mbox contains the proper Messages folder only, and the Inbox Old folder on the Desktop contains the mbox and Incoming_Mail (if it exists) files only. Now, proceed as follows:
    8. Open Mail.
    9. The account’s Inbox should properly display in Mail as many messages as *.emlx files are in ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/INBOX.mbox/Messages/. If that’s not the case, select the mailbox in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.
    10. In Mail, do File > Import Mailboxes, choose Other as the data format, and follow the instructions to import the Inbox Old folder that’s on the Desktop.
    As a result of doing the above, some messages may be duplicated now. Andreas Amann’s Mail Scripts has a Remove Duplicates script that you may find useful.
    Do with the imported mail whatever you wish. You may move the messages anywhere you want and get rid of the imported mailboxes afterwards.
    If all is well and you don’t miss anything, the files on the Desktop can be deleted, although you may want to keep them for a while, just in case.
    Take a look at the following article (also referenced in the thread I mentioned at the beginning) to learn what you might have done before upgrading to minimize the risk of this happening, and what you may do after fixing the problem to avoid similar issues from happening in the future. DON’T do now what the article suggests, though, as that would make things worse in the current situation:
    Overstuffed mailbox is unexpectedly empty
    Ask for any clarifications or if you need further assistance.
    Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • I accidentally deleted an important mailbox from server. Is there a way to recover it?

    Thanks

    I think I lost them, I did it from the Mail application but the Mailbox were certainly located in the server ( under ON MY SERVER) window. Moreover, Time machine was off.
    So no chance of calling the internet service provider? or apple?

    Hi Krishna,
    try to use:
        response->set_header_field( name = 'Content-Type'
                                    value = 'application/vnd.ms-excel' ).
    to set the correct content type for the file (example above Excel).
    Also place the coding in the OnRequest Event and not on the Layout of the page with flow logic. As an alternative you can use a controller with a controller class. In there redefine the method do_request and place the coding for creating the response therein. The coding should look similar to:
    *  send back the file
        response->set_header_field( name  = 'Content-Type'
                                    value = ls_file-content_type ).
      response->delete_header_field( 'Cache-Control' ).         "#EC NOTEXT
      response->delete_header_field( 'Expires' ).               "#EC NOTEXT
      response->delete_header_field( 'Pragma' ).                "#EC NOTEXT
      CONCATENATE 'inline; filename="' ls_file-name INTO lv_string.
      response->set_header_field( name = 'Content-Disposition'
                                  value = lv_string ).
      response->set_data( ls_file-content ).
    In the example above lv_string has type string and ls_file is a structure containing strings for name and content-type and an xstring for the file content.
    I usually don't set the content length as I have enabled compression and then the icm calculates the content length for me after compression.
    Hope that helps.
    Best Regards

  • Spot color from Photoshop to Illustrator

    Man, this used to be not a big deal.  I usually print in CMYK, but I am laying out bz cards that need to be black and pantone 200u, just 2 color.  When I transfer the logo from PS to Illustrator the pantone 200 changes values.  I tried putting it in ID and it changes values there too.  The printer needs it to be pantone 200 and the press will print it that color.  It is a jpeg file.  Do I convert to CMYK or should it still be RGB?  How can I import it into Illustrator and it stay pantone 200.  I'm not sure of the values of the color now because in every application it is different.  Where can I find the values?  Years ago you would give it to the printer in black for spot on different layers and they would handle it.
    hear are my 20 questions...
    how can I import spot from PS to Illustrator
    The values of pantone 200u
    leave rgb or cmyk
    jpeg is this ok or do I need to change it to another format

  • Some colours change from Photoshop to Illustrator in Swatches saved in Exchange format

    When I save a colour swatch in Photoshop Extended CS3 in the .ase format and load it into Illustrator CS3, some of the colours change completely - e.g. a bright orange #ffbb29 (in Ps) appears as a pale grey blue #B2BACE (in Ai). The problem seems to be with the use of upper or lower case - if the orange is question is saved as #FFBB29, it appears correctly in Illustrator (although bizarrely this seems to only affect some colours that feature (hex) letters).
    Is there a way of getting Photoshop to automatically give the values in upper case? I know I could just retype them all, but it would take ages (I use Swatches all the time) and it kind of defeats the whole Exchange idea. Or is there another way round the problem? My colour settings are synched (via Bridge) across CS3 Design Premium. Thanks in advance.
    Running XP Pro SP3 (32 bit), Dual Intel 5160s, 4GB RAM (yeah, I know)

  • Numbers crashes when importing .xls from Mail app

    iPad w/iOS 4.2
    Installed Numbers to view .xls files emailed to me
    Numbers crashes while trying to import .xls from Mail attachment and Mail freezes when trying to view same .xls natively.
    Here are the two processes I've tried:
    Process 1:
    1. Open Mail
    2. Press attachment icon until 'Quick Look' and 'Open in Numbers' appears
    3. Select 'Open in Numbers'
    4. Numbers opens and the large .XLS icon displays while 'importing spreadsheet' process bar moves to about 50%
    5. App crashes and returns to springboard
    Process 2:
    1. Open Mail
    2. Press attachment icon until 'Quick Look' and 'Open in Numbers' appears
    3. Select 'Quick Look'
    4. Native view app tries to open and quickly changes to large attachment icon with no 'Back' button or any way to return to Mail
    5. Push Home - returns to springboard
    6. Select Mail - still shows large attachment icon with no 'Back' button
    7. Reboot iPad to clear Mail freeze in order to view Mail again
    Anyone have any idea what is wrong with Numbers or the native .xls viewer?
    Note, the .xls is version Excel 97-2003.
    thx

    No pics in this .xls - just tabs with data. I bought Numbers specifically to view only and it crashes after soft reboot, hard reboot, delete/re-install of app, etc.
    I'm also seeing several of these same issues on this topic w/o answers. Has anyone called or seen Apple in person to help? One 'solution' was to delete app from iPad/iTunes and reinstall with older backup version. In my case I don't have a backup as it's a new iPad...
    Extremely frustrating.

    Hi Rajeev,
    Thanks for your inputs. I myself am a basis guy. I ve already checked all the authorizations given to the user - PISUPER, and have found it to be fine. Can't understand why this security issue crops up still. anyways, i m getting this error when trying to import an object from the server. If i try to create a new object and during the process, try to import the SCV from SLD, i m facing with an error again, of a different sort. The log says...

  • ITunes freezes when importing music from CD and also when playing,

    Just recently iTunes has started to freeze when importing music from a CD - it just stops and the progress bar remains as it it. The whole mac then freezes and I get the spinning beachball. I can't use any other application. The same thing is happening when I play music - it's ok for a song or two and then freeze and the beachball appears. I've downloaded iTunes again and reinstalled and it's just the same. Using Safari and Mail etc is no problem at the moment.
    I also have a problem getting the iMac to recognise external hard drives - it won't show them on either firewire 400 or 800. I can see my 1TB drive using usb ( it shows up on the desktop, whereas on firewire it doesn't do this) but if I try to open it and see the contents in finder, it opens, but doesn't dispaly the contents of the drive. I can see the disk size but just get a grey spinning wheel in the bottom right hand of the finder window. Timemachine does not work.

    I have had the same problem & itunes crashes when i try to import a file. Now i can't even start itune. I've reinstalled itunes so many times, without a fix, I've lost count.
    I did post and had no reply. I'll watch this post with interest.
