Importing Preferences/Styles in Captivate 5

I have a template that uses specific styles and preferences - it's working well, with a few bugs reported to the Bugs line.
However, if I start a project by using "Record new project", the Preferences and Styles revert to the defaults. Recording this way is a very easy way for me to do my projects - I record a Custom and a Training project, then copy the slides to the main one - but not if I have to go through each slide and change the caption style, etc. each time.
Is there a way I can change the defaults, or force the Record New Project to use the correct Preferences and Styles? Using the Settings button doesn't help, because the correct Styles haven't been imported, so it doesn't recognize them.

I'm replying to my own question to add some more to it.
I've learned that I can import Styles and Preferences to an existing project, and that I can set the defaults for new projects by changing each default style individually. However, I don't seem to be able to import a styles set to be used as the default for future projects.
Does anyone know if there is a way to do this? I have a number of developers who all need to use the same settings, and it would be SO much easier if I could send them Styles and Prefetrences files to be used as the default for future work.

• Can't import CP7 styles into CP8

I'm unable to import styles originally created in Captivate 7 projects into Captivate 8. I can export a style sheet from a CP7 project loaded in CP8, but importing the style sheet into another project returns an error message about the style being exported from a previous version of Captivate. If I save the file it goes through the file needing to be converted to Captivate 8, but the export/import process still has the same error. My guess is that this problem is tied to the bug of always having to convert a previous project each time it's opened in CP8, even if you've already converted it before.
I can go through all the styles in the project and write down each and every setting so I can rebuild it in Captivate 8, but I would prefer to not have to spend my time doing that much work.

Ugh. It would make sense to at least import the previous styles and apply them as Primary and just leave the Tablet and Mobile view to Captivate's default settings. This way you would only need to go in to define two of the styles instead of all three. Oh well.

• Cannot import preferences...WHY?

I make a project in Adobe Captivate 8. I export the preferences into an "Adobe Captivate 8 options file" .cpr
I make another project in Adobe Captivate 8. I import the preferences (.cpr) file......
Cannot import preferences. The preferences file you are trying to import was exported from an earlier version of Adobe Captivate.
I used the same program to make both files. TEST: I took project #1. duplicated it - Project #2. Same error. so the same file, can't import it's own preferences file because it was made with another version?
Possibly related issue. No matter what, every time I go to save a project (no matter how many times I've saved it previously) I always get the same dialogue:
"This project will be converted from Adobe Captivate 7 to Adobe Captivate 8 format. Once the project is converted, you will not be able to open it in a previous version of Captivate."
Here's the thing. I only have ever had Captivate 8. I've used previous versions at other companies, but this is the only version of Captivate I have ever had installed. 8. That's it.
Why am I getting all these errors? How can I correct this? The projects are all ONLY made with Captivate 8.

This is a know. Issue and should be fixed in the next update.

• Import Object Styles

Captivate v5.5
Before I had work done on my Laptop I exported my default Object Styles.
Now I want to import them - not to a specific project but as my default global styles.
I cannt see how you re-import the styles via the Menu at the top of Captivate. Most are not active as I dont have a project open - but I dont want to apply them to a single project - they should be my "global" defaults.
Any ideas please ?

Captivate v5.5
Maybe I did not make myself clear.
I installed v5.5 on my laptop.
I spend time setting the global object stlyes to meet my needs. - as and when I open a new project.
Later I have to uninstall Captivate v5.5 due to work on my laptop.
Before I uninstall Captivate I want to save my global object styles and once I have got Captivate back on my laptop I want to re-import all my global object styles.
How can this be done ?

• Load or import custom style mapping in link options – is that possible somehow?

Hi Everyone,
I'm working with Instructions for Use and Technical Manual documents in InDesign. I'm constantly fine-tuning our templates, and now I have to refresh them again, because of a brand refresh. I'm using the Custom Style Mapping in the Link Options panel a lot, because it helps us to copy the text from older documents to the new ones with the right formatting, with less effort. The only thing I miss is the “Load/Import Custom Style Mapping” option from this panel.
Do you know if there’s any options to export/import/load these mappings somehow from one document to another? Is it possible to write a script for that? I find this part of InDesign quite unattached, it seems to me (based on my search) that no other people are using it. I feel lonely, help me here!
(I have created many new mappings in an older document, and I’d like to be able to use them in the new templates as well, but I can only do that if I map the styles again. And it’s quite time consuming. Maybe I'm just using too many paragraph styles, I have no idea – this could be another question: what is too much when it comes to styles...)
Thanks a lot,
Zita

Sync is not intended to be used as a backup service like you are talking about, but it will work as long as you save the Recovery Key, as Jefferson mentioned (you also need your Sync Username ''[email address you used]'' and your account Password).
Mozilla has just started working a new "cloud service" that is code named '''PiCL''' for "Profile in CLoud", which I am expecting will be a lot easier to use and might allow the user to access their bookmarks and other data from the internet without adding a "borrowed" PC to your Sync account.

• Exporting at HIGHEST quality - iTunes IMPORTING preferences?

Does the iTUNES IMPORTING preferences matter? I am exporting UNcompressed so I can give songs to a Master Engineer. What should my itune settings be at?
or should i share another way?
Thank you!

Yes - If you're delivering a mix to a mastering engineer, do not share to iTunes! Export to Disk instead.
Generally, when you deliver something to a mastering engineer, you want it to be as unprocessed as possible. iTunes is a fantastic consumer-oriented playback application. But for sending audio in and out of iTunes on its way to a mastering engineer, it’s Hogwarts - full of mysterious nooks and crannies that could inadvertently transform your audio without you realizing it. Plus, it's completely unnecessary and avoidable.
So to take steps to ensure the highest (and most unadulterated) quality possible, first turn off auto normalize in GB’s advanced preferences, if you haven't already done so.
Then, if you've chosen any presets for your Master Track, remove them (adding these kind of finalizing effects is exactly what the mastering engineer does; the presets in Garageband are a quick and easy alternative, but you have the real thing).
Finally, under the Share Menu, choose Export Song to Disk. And, of course, don't compress.

• Importing Graphic Styles

What is the best way to import graphic styles from another document (Win XP, JS)?
I know there are Document methods for importing CharacterStyles and ParagraphStyles... but why not graphic styles?

no direct way that I know of, but it is possible, I would
- create a temporary pathItem
- apply the desired Graphic Style
- copy the temp pathItem and paste in into the destination document
- delete the temp item from both source and destination documents
- loop thru all graphic styles if I needed all graphic styles imported

• How to import .exe files into Captivate

I have some Flash .exe files that I want to import into
Captivate so I can combine the files....and also so I can choose
the properties for the files (for example, either to run on a loop
or also to take to a website upon completion).
So, how do I import .exe files into Captivate?

Hi Steve
Unless you can find some sort of a converter out on the web,
I think you are out of luck. I am aware of the SoThink SWF

will.

• Importing MP4's into Captivate 5

I was told by a fellow e-learning developer that MP4's could be imported into Captivate 5. I've looked through my training books, and I may have missed it, but I can't find where it states this is allowed. Does anyone know for sure if MP4's can be imported?

That makes sense, thanks! I'll mark the discussion as answered.

Hi there
I believe what Lilybiri was saying was that when you import the MP4, Captivate performs a conversion to FLV. Because the conversion may take a while to perform, you are allowed to continue working in Captivate while "in the background" the MP4 is being fully converted.
The net result is that it will no longer be an MP4 when Captivate presents it to the viewer. It will be an FLV.
Cheers... Rick

• Import RPC-style WSDL

Hello!
I currently implement a RFC -> RFC adapter -> XI -> SOAP adapter -> Web Service scenario. I have imported the WSDL of the Web Service as External Definition into the Integration Repository to use it for the RFC <-> Web Service mapping within the graphical mapping tool.
Until now I only have imported document-style WSDL and there never have been any problems. Now the WSDL is RPC-style which means that the messages described by the <wsdl:types>...</wsdl:types> part should be enclosed by an additonal structure describing the Web Service operation to be executed.
However, in the graphical mapping tool the structure for the Web Service operation is missing and thus the Web Service call cannot be executed. How can I solve this problem without changing the WSDL or creating an additional XLST or Java mapping?
It seems that there is no problem with the WSDL. When I loaded it with the Web Service Navigator test tool of the SAP Web Application Server the structure describing the Web Service operation has been generated in the request message.
Regards, Tanja Schättler

Hi Tanja
Check this note 856597, it even has some examples of WSDL documents and sample SOAP messages that illustrate how one can write an equivalent WSDL in another style.
A snippet from the note,
"Q: Can I convert an RPC styled WSDL to a document styled WSDL?
A: It is difficult to answer yes or no because the answer depends on the WSDL instance and the implementation of the code that binds the XML instance to some native object. The problem comes from the fact that these two styles describe web services in different layers. The document style WSDL describes how one can bind an XML document to the SOAP message format. In contrast, the RPC style WSDL describes how one can bind an object to the SOAP message format. One can imagine that this works in two steps: first representing the object as an XML document and then binding this XML document to the SOAP message format. How this first step works is controlled by the SOAP encoding name. For the standard encoding specified in the SOAP specification, most objects can be easily described in an equivalent XML schema. Some special objects such as references and arrays must be represented by some special rules and some additional meta information in XML. This implies that these additional attributes and elements must also be described in the XML schema and the document style based proxy must set these values in the instance appropriately.
One must however note that even if one has an equivalent document style WSDL, this does not automatically guarantees the interoperability. Some RPC styled service implementations have significant interoperability problems such as requiring the xsi:type attribute for every element or the SOAP encoding attribute at some particular element. If one has to call such non conformant SOAP service, one must adjust the message accordingly.
Attachment wsdl_style_samples. zip contains some examples of WSDL documents and sample SOAP messages that illustrate how one can write an equivalent WSDL in another style.
Related Questions "Does the RPC or Document style in WSDL play a role in the SOAP adapter?"

• Exporting to iTunes (importing preferences)

I am exporting my songs with the intent of having them mastered professionally. does it matter what the iTUNE IMPORTING preferences are set on. i am looking at it now - which ENCODER should I use and which SETTING. The highest?

The recordings are mostly 30 or 45 minutes. I copy them to Garageband in real time, and then click on Export to iTunes in the File menu. The "creating mixdown" is often very slow. The longer, 45 minute files might take more than an hour to get into iTunes.

• Importing a movie into Captivate

I need to import a movie into Captivate. I've tried .avi and .swf....flv works great, but the finished .swf file will be placed into an LMS shell, so I won't be able to reference the external .flv file.
The .avi file, when published in Captivate to a .swf, is choppy and the audio is off. I tried changing the frame rate, but it didn't help.
When I converted the .avi to a .swf file, placed it into Captivate and published it, the resulting .swf opened for a couple of seconds then crashed, or closed, or whatever. I just get a blank screen for a couple of seconds, then nothing.
Please advise re: the best movie format to place into Captivate. I can convert the .avi to any format.
Thanks, mp

Well, for starters, Adobe Support people don't lurk in the forums waiting for issues to resolve.
What you mostly have here are users helping other users. Now we do notice that members of the Adobe Captivate Development team have been frequently posting here since version 5 has been released. While I heartily applaud that move and agree that it will only help the product over the long haul, we shouldn't count on it because Adobe says right up front that the forums are User to User and not an officially sanctioned support channel.

• Export / Import Page Style.

Is there any way to Export and Import page styles alone?
Thanks
null

Pages styles cannot be exported independently of the page object. When a page that uses the style gets exported, it will bring the style along with the page.

• Audio-CD import preference ignored

Importing audio-CD's into iTunes 6.0.4 with an "advance - import" preference set to "apple lossless" give my files in MPEG4 format (when examined with "get info"). I think MPEG4 corrseponds to AAC format. Who's in charge here, me or iTunes?
Help me out guys, where am I going wrong? (I import CD's by stuffing the disk in the slop and hitting the "import" button).
IMAC-G5 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Both Apple Lossless and AAC are MPEG-4 audio files.
When you Get Info in the Finder, you won't see the difference.
Select an imported song in iTunes and Get Info and you will see the difference.
Or add the 'Kind' column in 'View options' (command-J) to see the difference.
Hope this helps.

• Adobe Captivate 5 import caption style issue

Hi dear all,
I use captivate 5, and so is my college. We try to make a base template to use and distribute to all that will work with us.
There are issues with setting standards in Captivate 5
Problem no 1
One issue is that all changes made to caption styles are gone after you close and open your project again.
a) Edit
b) Object Style manager
c) Change styles on e.g. default
d) Press button "Apply"
e) when done press button "OK"
d) Save and close
f) Open
d) Enter Object Style manager = all styles are back to factory settings.
Respons to predicted questions:
Yes we tried both opening Captivate 5 as an administrator and as a normal user.
Yes my account on the computer is the admin account
My college got the "Project-all-styles.cps" file I exported by choosing "all styles of all objects" and pressing export
This is done under Object Style Manager.
Problem no 2
My college successfully imports the file "Project-all-styles.cps", by choosing the import function under the Object Style Manager
This results in one [Default Caption Style] that still is with factory settings and a new [Default Caption Style]_1 with my preferences are made.
Problem no 3
The [Default Caption Style] can not be deleted, i want to remove the one called [Default Caption Style] and change name on [Default Caption Style]_1
I want to remove _1
Solution 1
Find a way in Captivate 5 to unlock the "change default lock" that seems to be there
Solution 2
Enter the file that contains the default styles and change manually by typing by hand. I could not find th file for that. It does not seem to be an *.ini file containing that information.
I hope for good answers on these question.
Best Regards // Daniel Perez

Just make it easy
1. Use an understandable language like when defining styles
When opening a *.cps document it looks like this
And that is not good.
function(){return A.apply(null,[this].concat($A(arguments)))}
$   < C a p t i v a t e S t y l e s / > •     ‰   ÷   Š     ‹        “   Œ                   D   ~   ÷   “          “   Ž       “          “          “   e   U   f      j   m       n       k   g   l   h       i   6   [ D e f a u l t   R e v i e w   A r e a   S t y l e ] k   m       n       k   g       h       i   ~   k   g       h       i   ÿÿÿÿk   g       h       i   ÿÿÿÿk   m       n       k   g   Š   h       i   ^   k   m       n       k   m       n       k   m       n       k   g       h       i     k   g       h       i     k   g   ÿ   h       i     k   g   ï   h       i     k   m       n       k   m       n       k   m       n       k   g   /   h       i       k   g   ¶   h       i       k   g   ·   h       i       k   m
n k m n k l ’ “ • ‰ ‘' Š ‹ } “ Œ D | ‘' “ 7 “ Ž 7 “ “ • ‰ ë Š ‹ 7 “ Œ
2. Let the user choose within three options, and be able to change choice later.
a. Embed the styles in the project
b. Absolute-link to a folder, network folder or URL (with the URL it is easier to collaborate between individuals and also change styles centrally if needed)
c. Relative-link to a file. (E.g. one homemade folder called styles that always are at the same level as the folder with the projects)
This makes it easier to move entire project to other computers.
3. Have a button that says "default" then the issue of overwriting default is not an issue anymore.
4. Do the same three steps with question pools, motions, and all other features that could be lifted out in their own files. (E.g. skin editor)
I think that it would make this tool a really really really tough competitor to beat.
Just to sell it in a bit more, if e.g. the question pools would be an easy understandable XML then it would be no match to export questions from old systems/PDF's or read in questions in paper form with an OCR and transform them to useful XML's
Best Regards and very hopeful for the future to come
