Importing problem w/ mini DV (missing frames)

Hi all,
I have two different sets of mini DV tapes (shot with 2 different cameras). They are both game footage for football. Each set provides a different angle (wide angle and tight angle views). I imported both onto iMovie however I had problems with the tight tapes.
The wide angle tapes import just fine but when I try the tight tapes they don't register in the "frame boxes" to the right of the monitor. To be clear, the video itself shows up in the monitor just fine but doesn't appear in real time within the frames...and eventually it does but when I play it back the video is missing frames and is very jumpy.
Because the wide tapes work I know I'm not doing some basic thing wrong- I'm curious as to why the tape from the tight DVs doesn't register. I know the two cameras were different so consequently the two mini DVs are different. Does this have anything to do with the settings of each? It's very odd...any thoughts?
-Greg

Welcome to iMovie Discussions.
Were the poor tapes shot at LP or Super-LP speed?
Could the heads in the poor (narrow) camera need cleaning? (Camcorders, especially Sonys, sometimes replace poor frames 'on-the-fly' while you're watching in the viewfinder, or on a monitor, but that doesn't happen when the poor recordings are exported via FireWire.)
What happens when you swap the tapes between the camcorders and then import? ..In other words, is it the tapes or the camcorders?
(NOTE: a Super Long Play tape swapped into another camcorder may not play back properly because of discrepancies in head alignment ..which may be causing the poor importing anyway - tape and heads shrink and expand in temperature extremes, so shooting a Super LP tape outdoors on a cold day and then replaying indoors in the warmth may produce poor tape/head alignment.)
Which cameras were they, and what happens when you swap the tapes between cameras?

  • Video import problem from mini dv

    Hello,
I have a problem importing footage from a *Canon mv700i* DV camera (via firewire) with imovie 09. I can control the camera but only see pixels when I hit play. This problem has been troubling me for some time. I already found this solution: http://macosx.com/tech-support/mac/v...idv/11613.html
    (the *garageband fix*)
This used to work but now it doesnt and I dont really know what the real problem is anyway. In the past it sometimes worked miraculously but then some days later I have the same problem.
    Could anyone please help me?

    Hi
Canon is known to be problematic when Daisy chained with an external hard disk to Mac.
Here is my unsorted list on this topic.
    Cable
    • Sure that You use the FireWire - USB will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.

over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

  • Why does my project and imported media in browser missing frames?

    Hello!!!
I have been using Final Cut Pro for about 6 months now and loved everything about it! However, since I have updated my software system and app itself I have been experiencing "missing frames" during playback and in the clip itself in my event browser. I have tried downloading Preference Manager to resolve the problem and it still doesnt help. What is the problem? Why does this happen? and what can I do? Is it an import setting? or maybe a recording setting on my camera.
Please a solution would be greatly appreciated as I have deadlines to make and I can't fluently edit my projects.
Additional info: when I export a file that misses frames during playback it is smooth and nothing seems wrong.
    Thanks guys!!!

    Some things to check:
Your media drive should have 15-20% free space. Does it after your clean up?
What kind of connection…Thunderbolt and USB3?
Is quality set to Better Performance?
If the answers to all of the above are yes, and you're still having problems, download and run one of the speed tests from ALA or Blackmagic.
Create proxy media and edit with Proxy, (Don't forget to change the setting back to Original/Optimized before you export.)

  • Missing frames importing from .mov

I'm trying to import several .mov files into imovie, and am having problems with imovie removing many frames from each. The help file said that it may be a problem with FileVault being on, but I checked and it is, and has been, off. Any idea how to fix this? I'm using iMovie 4.0.1, and have OSX 10.3.9.
    Thanks in advance.

iMovie is a video edit app meant to work with firewire connected miniDV camcorders
soo, any videos outside the standard settings of NTSC/PAL needs a conversion, e.g. in your case, I'm pretty sure, your files don't have 30fps, have they?
and iM/Quicktime has to "add" interlacing... that is heavily computing...
if MMFlash offers some settings in its export dialog, set to dv/NTSC… direct-from-source to wanted format is allways rcommended procedure....

  • Duplicate/missing frames in IMovie '11 ver. 9.0.4

    Hi,
When I import Canon 7D HD .MOV files (H.264 MP4, 1920x1280, 29.97 fps) into IMovie '11, I noticed that some frames are duplicated (probably to make up for missing frames), which results in motion "judder" when playing the clip in the main project window. This is especially noticeable when panning a shot, and appears to happen at every 3.5 sec of video.
It does not matter if video optimization (large or original) is turned on or off, when importing the clip. (I usually use original) Audio track remains unaffected.
Inevitably, this judder/stuttering is passed on to any form of video export, be it MP4 ,DV, MOV, etc., which ruins final product.
What's really strange is that the optimized clip that's created by IMovie and stored in the events folder, plays smoothly in Quicktime, no missing or duplicated frames. So it is something in IMovie's UI that's creating this problem. This should not happen at all - what is shown in IMovie's playback window should match the original or optimized video, frame for frame.
Is there anything I am missing as far as settings, or is something not right on my system? And yes, I did send Apple a bug report.
I am doing this work on a late 2007 17" 2.67 GHZ Intel Core Duo Macbook Pro, 4GB ram, Mac OS X 10.6.8  (slow, but steady)
    Thanks for your input.

Hi! I ran into same problem!
    I have iMovie version 11 9.0.4 (1634). Running on OSX Lion, 13" Macbook Pro Mid 2010 C2D 2.4GHz.
I used Samsung Galaxy S II to capture a small video of GT5 replay from LCD tv in 1080p (PAL, 25Hz) mpeg4 format. No matter what export settings I use the exported video file from iMovie has a several duplicate frames. I took the video file into Avidemux and stepped it through from frame to frame. Duplicate frames are:
    26,27
    42,43
    104,105
    120,121
    137,138
    153,154
and so on.... that is the reason for judder/jerky movement. Other programs like Blender (or Openshot movie editor on Linux) produced a nice and smooth video.
So I looked more into this problem and I noticed that when importing a video file into iMovie, DO NOT use the "optimize video" option. If I import my short movie into iMovie without doing the optimizing part, editing seems to be a bit slower but the exported video file plays smoothly. I couldn't find any duplicate frames. After using the "optimize full original size" option and then re-exporting the movie it was full of duplicate frames again...
I'm not sure what the optimizing does (using a faster intermediate codec/format?) but for this simple test it certainly ruins exported movies...
Not sure if this is any help to you, but you might want to try it...

  • Final Cut Pro/GY-HD111E import problems?

    Final Cut Pro/GY-HD111E import problems?
With a brand new Mac Pro and very latest Final Cut Studio complete with updates I'm having a little problem trying to import footage directly from a JVC GY-HD111E (yes I'm in PAL land, UK) via FireWire into FCP.
Footage is 720p/25p and timeline is set up in FCP that way.
I'm doing a 'capture now'. The first clip I'm trying to import is about 45 minutes long with no cuts/breaks whatsoever.
What happens is after about 60 seconds or so, it FCP automatically breaks the clip for no reason and starts a new one, trouble is, when it does this I lose about 4 seconds of footage at that point.
It continues to break clips randomly, sometimes after 40 seconds or so, sometimes after 95 seconds, but usually between 30 seconds and 2 minutes and each time it starts a new clip I lose between 1 and 6 seconds.
As I say, there are zero breaks or cuts in this clip, I have a 45 minute clip that was shot in one take, not even a pause anywhere.
Is this a JVC issue or a Final Cut issue?
It's a pain as it simply means I can't import my 9 hours of footage hence I can't get on with this project.
Any ideas why this phenomenon is happening?
    Thanks guys.

I mean I get the same errors.
    Let me explain again.
There are NO start/stop/pauses in this clip.
I'm trying to import just ONE clip with no breaks, again, there are NO start/stop/pause, it is one continuous clip of 15 minutes duration.
The JVC creates some sort of errors at the Firewire output stage, it drops frames or other errors, FCP gets confused and creates a new clip, even though it is the same clip, but due to the GoP structure, it looses a few seconds too hence I can't import the footage as I keep loosing bits here and there mid clip. It is randam, every 30 to 100 seconds or so it will do this.

  • Missing frames in iMovie

I am trying to convert my old 8mm Camcorder tapes to iMovie HD. I have bought a Pyro A/V Link (analog to DV converter) and am connecting it to my iMac via a Firewire cable. However, after a few minutes of playing a tape into the converter and iMovie I get missing frames as if the computer can't keep up with the frames per sec coming from the Camcorder and converter. Does anyone have any clues on how to overcome this problem? I have all other applications turned off and it doesn't matter where I save the movie on the hard disc, the problem persists. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

    Hi Gazza51,
    Welcome to the forum!
I would advise to return the Pyro A/V link to the store where you bought it and have it replaced with Canopus ADVC 110. I own and have used one a lot with iMovie until I upgraded my equipment. Also, you will find many posts on this forum recommending exactly this piece of hardware. Firthermore, the iMovie forum could be a better place for you to search information about iMovie (it is already there I am sure and you do not even have to ask) than this forum which is more about Pro applications such as Final Cut.

  • Annoyed with JVC/Final Cut Pro import problem; will they ever fix this?

Annoyed with Final Cut Pro JVC import problem; will they ever fix this?
I've shot footage on JVC GY-HD111E in the UK in 720p/25p PAL mode.
I'm trying to import lots of short clips (average 10 seconds) into Final Cut Pro (latest version with 720p/25p support) with a new Mac Pro maxed out with ram and 3 extra internal HDs.
Problem is, on a scene-break i.e. pause/stop, Final Cut detects this and creates a new clip, but it takes about 5 seconds to 'searching for media" before it starts the new clip. Because some clips are only very short, this 5 second delay sometimes means I only get the final few frames of a clip, rather than the entire 5 seconds or so of it.
JVC UK are blaming Apple and are saying it is up to them to fix it as Premiere and Edius does not have this problem.
However, Symbiosis in the UK (who do HD-Connect box) say that the JVC ProHD cameras do not wrap the shots up properly at the end, they are kind of left open and this creates problems on scene-breaks.
I've tried turning off the "create new clip on timecode break" etc, but it does not make any difference, when I do this it simply quits capturing on a scene break. Besides I have about 300 cutaways like this and I don't want to spend the rest of the year breaking them up on the timeline as this would be a futile and long workflow.
I'm importing and working on a native HDV 720p/25p timeline and this is the way I want to work. I've already imported and edited 4 hours of footage, but these 4 hours were easy as all 4 tapes had no start/stop points, they were recorded continuously from beginning to end of tape for 64 minutes each time so importing was no problem; 1 clip per tape.
But now I've come to my 5 tapes containing hundreds of cutaways I'm kind of screwed and need some advise on how I can import them natively in HDV without losing this 5 seconds off the beginning of each clip whilst FCP searches for the media each time.
I've been told this issue is definately with FCP, any ideas how I can get around this?

I haven't heard of this JVC/FCP problem, so I can't comment on it. However, whoever shot the cutaways didn't do you, the editor, any favors.
I've been doing video since 1984, and I've got to say, anyone who shoots a scene that is only 5 or 6 seconds long on tape is making a huge mistake, and it's been that way since the beginning of computerized editing in the late 70s.
Shoot at least 5 seconds of pre-roll before the shot begins, then roll tape for at least 5 seconds after you've got the shot. That's the protocol I've followed for 22 years now. Tape is cheap, edit suite time isn't.
But laying down only 5 to 6 seconds for a scene is wrong, IMO.

  • Import problem DVCPRO 25 with CS5.5

I have a problem with importing a 60 min DVCPRO 25 file from P2 into CS5.5. I worked with the file in CS4 project before and it worked fine (the file had been split into two parts while recording with a HVX200, but it is handled as one file in NLE) Now I wanted to import the file into a new project with CS5.5 but the import process gets stuck and Premiere hangs. Any idea or similar experiences with this?

    Yes, effectively I have
    DesignStandard_CS5_5_Content_ALL.exe
    DesignStandard_CS5_5_LS4.7z
    DesignStandard_CS5_5_LS4.exe
    Illustrator_15_1_Content_LS4.exe
    InDesignFamily_7_5_Content_ALL.exe
Then I run the DesignStandard_CS5_5_LS4.exe but it finished by :
'Un problème s'est produit lors de l'extraction de certains fichiers. Vérifiez l'espace disponible sur l'ordinateur ainsi que les droits d'accès en écriture pour le dossier de destination'
    ->
'A problem occurred while extracting some files. Check the available space on the computer as well as write access to the destination folder rights'
All of this is ok, I do installation wiith local administrator  user, and the PC is a Win7 computer ... so I don't know why installation isn't running correctly...
    Thank you for your help

  • Adobe -- Turn off Missing Frames warning!

If you generate frames one at time (i.e. 3d rendering) -- you might have missing frames in your sequences used in After Effects. Beware because CS6 makes this a massive headache. If someone knows a workaround besides a huge time-waster that is creating dummy filler frames, please let me know.  Please submit a bug report to Adobe because this missing frames warning is a massive frustration...  Feel free to copy/paste from below.
    ******BUG******
    Concise problem statement:
The missing frames warning indicator IS HORRIBLE.  It is intrusive, unnecessary and inefficient.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1.  I Have loaded a series of sequential frames.  They are coming from a 3d renderer so sometimes frames are missing and are filling in gradually.
    2. Add the sequential frames to a composition
    3. Scrub the playhead in the composition.
Results:  Each time I touch the scrub bar, I get a warning "After Effects warning: The sequence has 335 missing frames."  Next time I touch the scrub bar "The sequence has 334 missing frames"
Expected results:  Pre CS6 -- The missing frames warning used to come up ONCE when reloading or loading footage... NOT EVERY time I touched the scrub bar.  It is SO annoying.  Make it work the way it used to in CS5.  This current implementation is absolutely horrendous.  It is completely useless and a huge waste of time for people who generate individual frames (i.e. 3d animators -- many of whom use After Effects)

Adobe is obviously very responsive to their customers.  It's only been about 3 months. For super-annoying features, I think they promise an 18-month turnaround.
I requested auto-save for Illustrator about 10 years ago.  Still waiting for that one....
Use feature request -- I already did ... but more voices have a slightly better chance of being heard.

  • The registry settings used by theiTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs are missing

I recently installed a programme to convert audio from a cassette player to digital and I found that my CD/DVD drive was missing. I deleted the offending programme and followed a "fix" by deleting the upper and lower filters as specified in the fix. My CD/DVD drive reappeared but now when I open iTunes I get the message “the registry settings used by theiTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs are missing” even though I am able to import tracks from a CD to iTunes. I haven't tried burning a CD yet but then I hardly ever do. I don't appear to have the problem but the message insists that I do!

I am working with an outside editor who did some edits for my company in Premiere 5.5.
They're  tryng to supply me with a FCP7 compatible XML file for import into FCP7.
Well I am able to convert the XML file in FCP7, but not all of the info is coming thropugh properly.
The edit is a simple one...
    2 camera A/B talking head
1 Main Audio track whihc is done as 4 audio (2 stereo) tracks in Premiere.
The edit supplied to me comes through with the video being fine on 2 tracks.
However, the audio track does not even show up in my timeline.  However it's there on his Premiere timeline.
Any idea what might be the problem?
I have supplied pics of both timelines for reference.
One is his Premiere timeline, the other is my FCP7 timeline after XML conversion.
Premiere timeline with 2 videos tracks and 4 audio tracks.
FCP7 timeline with 2 video tracks and only 2 audio tacks sowing up.
Where is the other audio track.

    Jeff,
Thanks for your advice, the use of the UT Video Codec Suite has been exceedingly helpful in capturing video. It has made 1080i capture much simpler.
Unfortunately it has not solved my 720p import problems.
I have played around with several different configurations. If I record 720p at 29.97 frames, the whole video imports without difficulty, but the sound is messed up. But when I try to import 720p video at 59.94 frames, Premiere Pro will only import the first couple of minutes of the video if the video is longer than 7 minutes.
If you have any further advice, I would appreciate it.

  • CS5 Windows import problems (ppj, avi)

I have the CS5 Master Collection installed on a Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit laptop. I have some old Premiere 6.5 projects that I wanted to open/import.
When I first tried this, I could open the ppj files and make prproj files from them, either by double-clicking on the ppj file name or by importing the ppj in to a new prproj, but the video files within the ppj didn't import properly. Premiere Pro CS5 said, "The selected file cannot be linked because its type (video) does not match the original file's type (audio and video)." These video files are paired avi and wav files captured from mini-DV tape using Premiere 6.5 under Windows XP Pro. A sample check of one of my avi files with GSpot includes these results:
The codec section says (among other stuff)
         codec: dvsd
         Name: DVC/DV Video
         Status: Codec(s) are Installed
    The container section says
         File length correct
         DV Type 2 AVI
         OpenDML (AVI v2.0)
         DV Audio/Video: 748 MB (97.63%)
         AVI Overhead: 18.1 MB (2.37%)
When I tried more recently, Premiere CS5 does not include ppj under "All Supported Media" in the import dialogue box. I can open Bridge from Premiere and browse to a ppj file, but when I double-click the file name, I get the error message, "File format not supported." If I try to open the ppj directly rather than import it, instead of trying to run a conversion as it did initially, Premiere CS5 gives me the welcome to Adobe Premiere Pro popup without actually doing anything w/ the ppj. I'm not sure whether a Premiere update ran between the first and more recent attempts to import ppj files, but I now have version 5.0.3.
Does anyone have suggestions for how to make this work?
    Thanks.

I had the same problem with an old ppj project.
The option to import was available pbut CS5 would crash when import was invoked.
There was an error message about video filters.
Adobe help line, over the course of an hour, tried to make me believe that this was related to the 64 bit vs 32 bit issues.
Then I pointed out to them that the application was able to read the .avi file and play it if I imported it by itself without trying to import the whole project.
I also mentioned that deleting the previews made no difference.
At the end of the hour, they agreed to look at the project file. This was two weeks ago and this is the last time that I heard from them. When I ftp'ed the file to them they confirmed the following which I also told them; this is a separate problem from the import problem, but it is related to the support of this software. The automatic updates to the program cause Adobe .ppj import options to disappear from the import menu file type list. Again, they confirmed this and I had to unistall the whole package, reinstall Adobe, and not accept any updates.
I have yet to hear from Adobe on this. I suspect this is such a rare need that they feel they don't need to support it, but this being the case I think the doofs ought to take the feature out of the advertising list, or provide a stand alone utility to translate the text .ppj into a .prpj compatible project. It's not very difficult.
The most disturbing thing is that they obviously fail to do a thorough regression test prior to publishing updates. Basic features that are advertised are failing.
    THE SOLUTION (for my case)
Of course, the reason I wanted to import the project was because there was aOne of the key reasons to stay with Premiere is that I am used to it and want compatibility, as the others in this post also would like.
Besides Adobe being of no help at all, I have found a workaround. As you all know the ppj file is a text file with headers in [ ] brackets. This file contained some headers which did not appear in .prpj created projects and this was due to some special effects add-ins which were bundled with the video card I installed in the old system.
By removing the special effects using the old version of Premiere installed on a 32 bit system, I was able to import all the clips with the NLE cuts as I intended, and continue from there in CS5.
I hope this is a viable workaround for some.
I do not know if Adobe plans to continue to support the import feature, but they ought to update their docs. It does not work.

Anyone run into this problem? The project is fine when I preview it, but when I export it (or send it directly to YouTube) it comes up with missing frames (black frames.) It just flashes to black intermittantly with the missing frames.
Very strange ... thanks for any and all help!

The same thing happens to me and have no idea why, the other videos ive made have come out good but since this one had more videos than pictures, it flashes a black screen but cant find no where how to fix that.
