Importing problems, HD from DV tape

Hello! So I filmed on Canon Vixia, and then a Sony Handycam HDR-FX1000. Both instances I chose the HD record setting, and it was recorded onto a DV tape. Ive done it once before with the vixia, and couldnt get Final Cut Pro to recognize the footage on the tape. It just didnt show anything. After a while, I finally just brought the footage in through iMovie. And exported as a quicktime. Now on the next vixia tape, neither way will work to bring it into the computer. And I dont even want to know what will happen when I try the VERY IMPORTANT footage on the handycam. Soo. Now Im sitting with two tapes, that I cant see. I know there is some way around this that Im missing. Need help as soon as possible.

Ive been trying to look through threads to see what has worked for others. I use two different computers depending on my location. As of now I am using a Mac OS X 10.6.4;2x2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon. Yes, I have tried the firewire NTSC setting (Which is what Im using).
Sequence - HDV - 1080i60
Capture - HDV
Device Control - FireWire NTSC
Video playback - Apple Firewire NTSC
FireWire DV
Sometimes there is an error and sometimes theres not, but it just shows that it is playing, but doesnt show a picture. The timecode is moving. Final Cut Pro 6, And No, I had no been able to playback through the camera.

  • Problem importing "still" images from DV tape

    (Setup: iMovie 9, OS X 10.58, Pansonic NV-GS250)
    Hello everyone,
I m trying to solve the following problem:
I need to edit (fades, overdub etc.) a movie which has been mastered by someone else.
The DV tape I am trying to import has a lot of "still" sequences that were generated as follows:
    - The source DV tape was paused while the target (master) DV recorder was recording e.g. for five seconds.
This works fine on the resulting DV tape: The paused frame from the source tape is shown e.g. for five secs, then the next "real" clip is shown seamlessly.
However, upon import from the camera/master tape, iMovie discards these pseudo-still images: They show up as 0 kB files in the event folder.
This happens both with manual and automatic import.
I do not have access to the source material, i.e. the raw tapes and clips that were used this way. This means I cannot "rebuild" these discarded clips.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem - i.e. have iMovie recognize these clips that are actually paused source material?
Or is this something that would require Final Cut? Or may a third-party tool? I would send a few bucks if necessary.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello,
thank you for replying, but I probably didn't describe the problem properly ...
You suggest dragging a clip from the event into the project and then creating a Still Frame from it.
I cannot do this because iMovie will not import these clips *at all* - i.e., they are not physically present on the Mac although they show up on screen during import.
    Here is what happens:
    - Let's say I have three clips on my Digital Video Tape:
    - the first is a short, "real" scene,
    - the second was generated by pausing the source camcorder and recording this paused frame on the master camcorder for a few seconds
    - the third is another "real" scene.
The resulting DV master tape (which I am working with) plays back properly on the camcorder: scene 1, scene 2 (a paused frame), scene 3.
When importing this into iMovie, I end up with these files in iMovie's event folder:
    "clip-2009-07-02 01;55;37.dv" 34 MB
    "clip-2009-07-02 01;56;10.dv" 0KB <-
    "clip-2009-07-02 05;51;26.dv" 21 MB
I.e, iMovie discards these clips upon import - so there is nothing to generate a still frame from.
So I need to get around the import problem.
Even a third-party tool for importing such "paused still frame" clips from a DV tape would help. I just need to get them onto the Mac HD.

  • Eyetv 250 importing to imovie from vhs tapes

Okay Guys, I need a lot of help.
I am new to mac and I love it. I used to use Pinnacle Studio 10. I have a lot of old camcorder tapes which through the use of a tape adapter I am able to play camcorder tapes in the VCR. Then connect the VCR to elgato eye tv. I use the eye tv VHS assistant and play my movie into elgato.
I want to encode these movies and ultimatly put them on DVD.
So after I did the import I tried to drag the file into IMOVIE.
    I got this message..
The file could not be imported: The file “MacBook/Volumes/backup drive/EyeTV Archive/My VHS Tape - 9/10/06 9_21 PM.eyetv” can’t be imported; QuickTime couldn’t parse it: -43
I realized that the problem is the format that was imported was not compatible with imovie. I did more research and realized I that i could export the file to another format. There are several options, MPEG 4, Imovie, IDVD, etc.
What setting do I use to export the files? Also I want to combine several different sections of video. Can I do this. How can I export the section as a clip and drag the clip into imovie.
    Any advice would be great.

I just imported my first clip into iMovie today and it was captured from a Hi-8 Camcorder using Eyetv250. I used eyetv2 software's export option and chose "iMovie HD" as the format. I only did this because I thought I had to, knowing that it was going to be imported in iMovie HD6. This however created a 13+gig file from what was originally a 2.5gig file ! So , I don't think that was the right choice. I am going to go back and export using the Quicktime Movie setting toward the bottom of the export format option list (within eyetv2). That setting will produce a video export of the same size as the original.
Another thing I am going to try is to go into the "package" ( a package is basically a folder ) that is created by eyetv2 and try dropping the quicktime file directly into iMovie and see if it will import that way. If you go to the folder where your .eyetv file is placed (Eyetv archive) and right click on that .eyetv file you can choose to "show package contents". When you do that you will find a number of files, including a .mpg file which I assume contains the actual video footage which I would think iMovie can import directly. I'll come back here and post what happens but go ahead and try it.

  • Importing final edits from miniDV tape

    Good afternoon,
I have a bunch final cuts of family movies that I stored on miniDV tape. I would like to import these onto my Mac, but when I do so in iMovie I lose all the edits. Basically, iMovie imports the movie as separate clips.
Is there a way to simply import the final film and leave it as just that, the final film, sound and all?
Thanks for any thoughts on this.
    Cheers,
    John

    Hi
There are bit's here I do not understand.
    You've got miniDV tapes.
With "final cut's" = final edited movies ?
    a. There are several Video editing programs - some named so that one might think they were related as iMovie 1 to HD 6 ---- iMovie'08 to 11 ---- and iMovie'13 (version 10).
    b. There are no Common Video editing language/system - so if one edited in FinalCut - there is no way to get an editable version over to iMovie 1 to HD6 - oor other way around. There are some rudimentary Export functions that move the un-edited raw material between (sometimes) but no transitions, texts extra Audio etc etc are progressed over. This goes for Adobe Premiere and Avid Media-100 too.
    c. If You have a playable (edited) version on tape - then tool of choise is iMovie HD 6 as it can import movie as a full block (not splitt in individual clips) - FinalCut are not so easy to get to do this. iMovie'08 to 11 are not meant for interlaced video (as on Your tape = loses every second line when You try to create a new projeect or Export from them)
So as You see - my fantsy is limited - Please tell exactly what You've got on Your tapes - if TimeCode is broken or continuos without any dropped frames (flicker of black, no sound) (this happens if one record - then take a look at the sequence - but forgot to set Camera to find end of sequense to link to next recorded sequence) - If timecode is broken - it has to be handled in a special way.
And - tell exactly what You want to do with the material - when successfully in Your Mac again.
    Yours Bengt W

  • Importing DV files from HD tape camera into one file

    Hi there,
I have an old sony HD Cam using DV tapes.
I am capturing those tapes into Final Cut Pro to keep the original files in a .mov format, but when I do that, Final Cut slices the movie in 100 little pieces.
I would like to know if there is a way to capture the movie (approx 60mn) into one big .mov file instead of several pieces of files.
I know there are sofwtare that can join the files later on but I would liek to avoid doing 2 operations which is time consuming instead on doing just one capture.
    Thanks for your brilliiant tips.

    Hi, Thanks for your comments.
So that means I cannot de-activate this funciton on Final Cut Pro, I understand.
Is there a function on Final Cut Pro to join the mov files after they are captured (without compression) ??
If not can you recommend any good sofwtare (free or not) that could do this on Mac ??
Thanks a lot for your prompt answer.

  • New Macbook video import problem.

    Hi all,
I have just gone and bought myself a new Macbook Pro and I am very pleased with it. From a video standpoint I plan to use it to import and edit HD video from my Canon HV20. The new Macbook only has a Firewire 800 port and so the cable that I would normally use to connect computer and camcorder will not work as it is 'mini' Firewire to Firewire 400. I am assuming that there is/will be a 'mini' to FW800 cable available, but in the interim I am using a Firewire hub that is connected to the Macbook by a 400-800 cable. And herein lies my problem ! Although iMovie8 detects my HV20, it will not display or play or import any footage from the tape ! It just remains on the blue import screen and although the camcorder is merrily 'playing', no footage is actually making it across to the computer. I think the issue is the Firewire hub part of the connection but I thought it best to garner an opinion from users of this forum. Help !!
    Many thanks in advance, kroguk
    PS
I will also post this on the Macbook forum, so apologies if you see this post twice

Well, I can't find my Belkin FW800-to-4-pin (9-pin-to-4-pin) cable right now ..I'm doing some "tidying up" ..which is always hopeless for finding things afterwards!.. but I DID buy the other day - in the German Mac specialists, erm, can't remember the name - a Sonnet Fast-something (..which I've just put down, and now can't find..) teeny 9-pin-to-6-pin adapter (..so small that I can't find it!..) and I've just tested that with a Sony HC1 HDV camcorder.
    Using the Sonnet adaptor..
..which is mentioned on their website at top-left here: http://www.sonnettech.com/product/adapters/index.html ..on a normal 6-pin-to-4-pin FireWire cable.. I just connected my camcorder and successfully imported HDV from the Sony.
I tested it twice with iMovie HD 6, in the most adverse conditions: 1; connecting to the 9-pin FW800 socket on a G4 17" laptop (..which is generally too slow to import HDV in real-time..) and 2; looped ("daisy-chained") through the 9-pin FW800 sockets (..one socket from the drive to my Mac, the other socket from the drive to the camcorder..) of an external iOmega FireWire drive connected to my Quad G5 Mac, also with iMovie HD 6. Both imports worked perfectly.
I'm also trying it as I write this - I just found the adapter again! - to import into iMovie '08 on the G5, daisy-chained through the external disc (..the G4 is too old or underpowered to run iMovie '08..) and that works as well ..though I did have to "kick" the program into starting a new Event; at first the camera transport ran, but no video imported, so I just Stopped and re-imported.
I bought this adaptor "on spec", as no previous device or adapter had worked properly for me (..converting between 4-pin on a camcorder and 9-pin on a Mac..) and this is the first to have worked, for me. But I have great faith in Sonnet, as they make the extra S-ATA driver card and other bits and bobs which I put in my floorstander G5, and that all "just works".
Ah; the shop where I bought it is ..hold on a moment.. the "m store" in Munich. (Karsten may know them: when Gravis moved from Lindwurmstrasse to Im Tal, the m store opened up right next door to where Gravis had been before) and they're at Lindwurmstrasse 5a, their phone number - they speak English, too - is 0049 89 24 22 35 24 and their website is ..aaaarggh; they don't seem to have one.
Anyway; the Sonnet SimplyFast FireWire 400-to-800 Adapter works perfectly - for me - on the end of a normal 4-pin-to-6-pin FireWire 400 cable, and importing works flawlessly every way I've tried it ..even daisy-chained through an external drive.
    I can heartily recommend it.
But - as always - "your mileage may vary" ..meaning that it might not work so smoothly for you.

  • Audio quality in video imported from VHS tapes

    Hi All,
I am trying to import old videos on VHS tapes, using a Canopus converter. The video is importing into iMovie just fine, but the audio has a loud buzzing sound that covers up the actual audio and is very annoying. Is there a way to extract the audio so I can clean it up using Sound Soap, then return the cleaned up version to iMovie?
    I am using iMovie '09, version 8.0.5.
I also use Final Cut Express, so maybe it would be better to just export it to FCE and then extract the video from there?
Please give as much step by step detail as possible for both approaches. In the iMovie "Help" it said to extract audio using advanced tools, but I couldn't find a command in any of the advanced tools to do that.
    Thanks.

Is there a way to extract the audio so I can clean it up using Sound Soap
iMovie 06 has some good filters for that.
I also use Final Cut Express, so maybe it would be better to just export it to FCE and then extract the video from there?
Final Cut Express (or iMovie 06) will give you better quality but it won't solve the buzzing noise. I also suspect a grounding problem.

  • What are the correct setup and system settings for importing HDV video from tape?

I keep trying different "easy setups" and system settings/preferences in order to import both the audio and video from HDV recordings on miniDV tape to no avail in either FCE4 or FCP5.  I import via firewire from the camera.  My computer "sees" the camera and controls playback (I can hear the audio) but no video displays for capture (just color bars).
My camera is a Canon Vixia HV40 and my computer is a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
I've tried the HDV easy setup...no video...
I've tried HDV 1080i/60 as I saw recommended somewhere else...no video...
Captures standard video just fine but I'd like to try editing some higher def footage.
    Any suggestions?
    Many thanks.

The combination of all these helpful ideas solved the problem.
I set AV settings to HD and Apple Intermediate Codec HDV 1080i/60 AND set the cameras output to "locked" HDV.  Funny, it had been on "A" (Auto) before and should have simply sensed the need for HD output.  I then tried to capture using "A" again and this time it detected the difference between SD footage and HDV footage (I had clips of both kinds on the same tape).
I ran similar capture tests on FCP 5.1, FCE 4, and FCPX and all three programs captured HDV video and audio.
Thanks again everyone.  Be sure the camera is set to output HDV or "A".

  • Problems with importing text messages from PC Suit...

Problems with importing text messages from PC Suit 7.1.18.0 to my Nokia 5800
I am trying to import a csv file that contains text messages (Note that this file was created using PC Suit 7.1.18.0) to a subfolder that I have created to My Folders but PC Suits only imports the text messages to the Draft folder. Note that initially it shows that the messages are import in the correct folder but after a refresh it shows them in the Draft Folder. Is their any setting that I should change in the PC Suit or the phone? My computer runs on Windows XP Service Pack 3 and the Nokia 5800 was upgraded to the latest firmware v20.0.012
     Thanks for your help

Most phones only allows importing of draft and archived box for SMS.
To do a restoring, you need to backup the SMS as a .nbu file using PC Suite and restore later.
If you got an SD card, you can also do a backup on the SD Card (backup.arc) then restore later (reset and restore: backup.arc and mmc).

    Welcome to Apple Discussions..
My first suggestion is to Repair Disk. Here's how:
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior
Please post back and let me know how that goes.

  • How can I import a movie from sony DCR trv340 tape to Macbook Pro?

I have started using iMovie, I know it's been there quite a while, and I am trying to imort from a tape using Sony DCR-TRV340. I can import tapes created on the TRV340 but other tapes that were created on a different Sony device, from back in late 1980's will not load. When I pllay them on the camcorder they appear and I can watch them in iMove but they will not record. It says NO DATA FROM DEVICE. Is there a way to fix that or a setting that needs to be changed?
    Any hel would be appreciated.

A dual mode camcorder with both a photo camera and camcorder function.
While Apple doesn't seem to list these as compatible, have you tried connecting with a firewire cable, and turning on iMovie and seeing if it recognizes your camcorder?
Here is Apple's commentary on trying to get a camcorder to work:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1059#2
What about contacting Samsung, often companies have a knowledge base.
I know this isn't what you were asking, but if you have something recorded you absolutely must have, I have a hunch a friend with an older windows computer might be able to get it downloaded, then you could transfer it by thumbdrive to imovie.
    Just a thought.

No. You have no alternative but to plug it into a computer running iTunes and restore it.

  • Hi, I have problem with importing MOV files from SJCAM 4000. MOV files are in supported formats for Adobe Premiere Elements 11. But if I'm importing MOV file, only audio part is imported, video part is not imported. How can I solve this problem?

Hi, I have problem with importing MOV files from SJCAM 4000. MOV files are in supported formats for Adobe Premiere Elements 11. But if I'm importing MOV file, only audio part is imported, video part is not imported. How can I solve this problem?

    haben
From looking at the specifications of your camera (SJCam 4000), we know already what video compression your camera is using. It is H.264.
A H.264.mov file should be supported by Premiere Elements 11. On what computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 11 running?
Do you have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your computer? And, are you running QuickTime and Premiere Elements 11 from a
User Account with administrative privileges? Please go to Premiere Elements 11 Publish+Share/Computer/QuickTime to confirm that you find
presets there for the QuickTime choice there.
What are the properties of these H.264.mov files - is it 1080p30 (1920 x 1080p30)  or something else? Do you know if this camera is recording with a variable or
    a constant frame rate?
Please review and consider and then we will decide what next.
    Thank you.
