Importing PSD or PNGS? (Transparent)

Since Flash CS3 imports PSDs, should I continue importing
PNGS and JPEGS?
I am importing Transparent PSDs and find the published file
swf size is a little smatter than when I import transparent PNGs.
What is the rule of thumb with Flash CS3 and importing?
Thanks for your help.

there is no rule of thumb - the PSD import wizard is an added
and welcomed feature if you are
working with layered PSD files and Flash - but if you have a
single PNG then that's fine to import
on its own also.
As for file size - there may be a difference between a PNG
and the same PNG in a PSD file - I have
never tested it.

  • Problem importing PSD or PNG with transparent background

    I am using eLearning Suite 2. (CP5 Photoshop CS5)
I am trying to import a PSD or PNG. I am using it as part of a master slide.  It is a simple shape, with a transparent background containing a gradient overlay, inner shadow, bevel and emboss.  When imported, it appears correctly in the design area of Captivate.  However, when viewed in the browser, it acts as if it is an animation and I get what looks like a red color bar spectrum.  I have tried to flatten the layers and I still have the problem.  When I save it as a .JPG, it works fine.  However, as a PSD or PNG, it is a problem.  Seems like captivate may be having trouble rendering the gradient or transparent background.  Anyone else run into this issue?
    Files below:
    CPTX File:  http://coventry.mzinga.com/content/ss/temp/WCMS.cptx
    PSD File: http://coventry.mzinga.com/content/ss/temp/bottom_wave.psd
    Thanks,
    Eric

So, I thought it might have something to do with the "effects" settings in Photoshop.  HOWEVER, I took a regular photo, cut out a part, and put it on a tranparent background.  This file as both a png and PSD have a halo that fades in and fades out.   I checked timing and I have it set to no transition for the item and show for rest of slide.  I did not have this  issue prior to upgrading from 4.  Hmmmm.

  • Importing .psd file with transparency in Premiere Pro CS4 titler

I am trying to import a psd file with transparency into the Premiere Pro CS4 titler and the transparency will not come in. I've tried psd, png, jpeg, gif, targa and none will preserve the transparency. What I'm trying to do is create a custom lower third using a image without having to build it inside the titler or drop the PSD directly onto my timeline. This seems like an easy task, but I'm not having any luck. Please help!

Boy you guys are quick. I did not find this thread until after you'd sorted it out. You know how much I like to work on PS to PrPro problems!
    Jeff,
You might want to move this thread to the PrPro sub-forum, as it will likely help others with PSD Transparency issues, and might never get seen back here.
Like you haven't been busy doing the housekeeping already. You moved one post WHILE I was replying to it. Imagine my surprise, when I replied and ended up in the other sub-forum - as if by magic!

  • Import PSD or PNG into Flash?

Hi, I am trying to find out if there is a "correct" kind of image to import into Flash. Is there a quality difference between using a Photoshop file or a png image?

If your psd file is set to 72 dpi then you should see the same quality when importing either image. Importing a psd has the advantage of allowing for each layer to be imported as a separate file.

  • HT4641 Importing graphics with with transparent backgrounds such as .psd or .eps

I want to use this for an art project for my sons class. Can I import .psd files with transparent backgrounds as per Word, to retain the clear cut shape/opacity of background. Or can I import .eps illustrator files with transparent backgrounds? Thanks.

If you need transparency - as I stated - you need to convert the image to GIF. PSD is a layered graphic workspace file specifically for PhotoShop; EPS can be read by more applications, but is still basically a graphic print format. It might serve your customer needs, but wouldn't be the format I would recommend for general distribution. Typically you wouldn't embed EPS in another file, it would be the container for the print ready document (and the concern for transparency would be somewhat moot).
However, I'm not familiar with the intimate details of your project or customer needs, so take that for what its worth.

    Hey guys and gals,
This is my first post!!!Woo! Anyways...
Im currently trying to import PSDs with a transparent background and they just dont work! How frustrating! I noticed some other posts when searching and tried the suggestions, with variying success!
Is there a simple way to import graphics from PS CS2 to Motion without loosing effects, filters and transparencies??
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.....
    PM Dually 1.25 G4 & PB 1.67 G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Heya,
Because the PSD format is propietary, masks, layer effects and adjustment layers do not translate into Motion. You'll need to rasterize/apply any masks to turn them into regular-flavor transparency.

  • Psd or png to ai

    Hi,
A bit of a long list of questions, I have difficulty finding specific answers. As much as I would appreciate specific answers, just giving broad advice on the topics is also very much appreciated.
I currently need to convert some of my tshirt designs to ai or esp format so they can be printed. I have discovered the trace tool as to fix the problem you get with the lines when you import a psd file to illustrator. What I am still struggling with is keeping transparency of the background.
I did manage to create a ai file from png with a transparent background, but now I cannot seem to replicate it. Also I find it difficult to see IF the BG is transparent since its always white (instead of the grey blocks). atm I check by adding a layer in illustrator and paint something to look if it shows under the original layer.. seems a bit silly.
I've read that importing the png files should solve the problem, but I can only manage to keep transparency when saving as a png, which is not what I need. btw (may be the reason of my failure) I import the psd file and select flatten, since the psd files often contain many layers and I couldnt get the trace tool to work.
So I have a few questions which you might be able to answer; I sort of know the difference between ai and eps, but I dont see any reason to save as eps, is this correct thinking (taking into account I can deliver them in both formats)?
What would be the easiest way to convert psd or png files all with transparent BGs to ai? Is using the trace tool efficient and a good choice to fix the problems with the picture caused by importing psd to ai? should I 'always' use the "place" function to import? Is there anything else I should concern myself with?
Those are a lot of question, hopefully you are willing and able to answer some or point me in the right direction, if you have any idea what I am talking about, cause I only barely understand myself. I thought illustrator was much like photoshop, but it certainly isnt.
    in any case thanks
    cheerz
    Tom
PS I dont dare to ask anymore, and I did not research it yet myself, but what is meant with "text to curves" and "line thickness to paths"?

thank you all, I am now converting the images and it goes well. the terms are thrown at me by the printerstore that is going to sell my designs.
I do have a follow up question though. I have this one design which i want in 4 colors. it has white lines in it. If I enable ignore white, then those lines are removed after tracing (I dont want this), but if I do not enable ignore white, then illustrator will fill the background with white and lose transparent BG. How can I solve this? Plus when I use auto trace and select the number of colors, e.g. 4, then illustrator might still choose to only depict 3 colors, which seems really strange

  • How to batch convert psd to png with layers

how to batch convert psd to png with layers
i want to convert lots of PSD files into PNGs WHILE RETAINING
    LAYERS!
simply batching and choosing custom setting flattens the
    thing.
    how do i do that!??
and i KNOW it can be done somehow - because i have some old
png's i KNOW come from the same psd source. ironic, isn't it?
besides - feature wish for adobe developers:
    A) batch conversion should include 300dpi to 72dpi and vise
    versa.
    B) batch conversion should include PSD to PNG and vice versa
    - including layers and transparency.
    C) RGB to CMYK option when converting from 72 dpi to 300dpi.
    D) batch exporting should include PNG32 which it doesnt now -
but somehow DOES include the outdated and stupid gif-format.
    E) i'd like the Actions feature of photoshop - makes batching
    complicated procedures easly.
    F) I'd like support for the brushes of photoshop
    G) Better selecting tools for details like hair and fine
    edges.
Important notes is that i as webdesigner often need to make
certain aspects of my clients graphics into print material. Also
that i use fireworks for picture editing.
Praise for the developers of fireworks
    A) the compression facility of JPGs is AWESOME!
    B) PNG as fileformat is likewise awesome - i end up using it
for almost all i do these days. Transparency and good file sizes. I
have used fireworks cs3 to convert all psd and tiff and ai files to
    PNG.
    C) the vectors and styles and method of selecting and editing
things in fireworks is FAR SUPERIOR to flash and photoshop!

  • Importing PSD files?

In Photoshop CS2, I used the Extract filter to cut out the
background aroung people in several photos and saved them as PSD
files with transparent backgrounds. They look fine in Photoshop,
but when I import them into Flash 8, they look washed out and they
have light halos around the more intricate cutouts (like hair).
Looks like light colored pixel fringe. Any idea what's going on, or
how to improve the quality of the imports? (The PSD files are
placed over an imported JPEG photo background in my Flash file.)
    Thanks

save as PNG 24 and import to flash than you can have
    transparency and apply
to JPG compression upon export to minimize the size.
Open library CTRL L - right click image - properties, play
    with compression
to compare quality versus size. PNG can produce great results
    and be
really small in final file size.

  • Importing PSD into Flash CS5

I have a PSD file with layers that I am trying to import into Flash. The problem that I am having is that the text effects that I have applied in Photoshop are not transferring into Flash. All I get is the Font, Font size, and color. But I used Drop Shadow on some of the and some other effects as well. None of these are transferring over to Flash. Do I have to save them in a certain way i n Photoshop in order to effect the transfer. I want to be clear. I am not trying to import text effects as separate layers or anything complicated. I just want the text to look like it does in photoshop. Can anyone give me a suggestion?
    Thanks!
    Nena

It doesn't matter which one you use to create graphics and assets. Photoshop is regarded as the standard from creating web graphics, ther e is just so much more you can do. I prefer Fireworls when creating slices, and Pnotoshop for optimizing images for export. Keep in mind that a Fireworks PNG is basically the same as a PSD file, with layers, etc. But either one can export as a web png, transparent background. When you import one of these into flash, just choose to import as a single bitmap.

  • Why does Premiere Pro CS3 no longer import .psd files?

Over in the German forum, BjoernG has already asked this question as of this past June.  He's gotten no answer, so let's try it here.  Like Bjoern I use PPro CS3.  Mine is on WinXP with all updates.  I import PSD files as keying masks.  I've never had a problem until this evening (27 Aug 2014).  I tried to import a mask I've used many times before.  And it has always worked before.  Tonight PPro refused to recognize .psd as a supported file type, so it didn't show in the import folder file list.  When I told PPro to show "all files *.*", it showed the file.  When I selected it, PPro even showed the "import file" window, then displayed the "File Import Failure" window with Error Message:  File format not supported.  See the picture.
This is a file I've imported into many previous projects with no problem whatever.  In fact, I started with a project file from last year which showed the mask file in the project assets but offline!  Even though the file had not been moved.
If PPro CS3 is as obsolete as Adobe claims it is, then who's been messing with it?  And how can we get it "unmessed"?

I couldn't imagine what any of those steps would do for my problem – but I didn't have a better idea so I tried them:
    > If Premiere is acting weird, restart computer.
It's a laptop, so it was off all night.  I turned it on this morning.
    > Hold down shift+alt while opening Premiere.
If I hold down shift-alt before clicking the desktop icon, all it does is select all icons from top left to the Premiere icon.  It does not start Premiere.
If I press and hold shift-alt immediately after clicking the icon, Premiere displays every tiny module it loads rather than summarizing.  I held shift-alt until Premiere was fully up and idle.
    > Then empty all media cache.
I did that.  As I write, Premiere is busy reconstituting all of that.
Then finally, the acid test:  Try to import a .psd file.  Bzz-z-zt!  Still claims it's an unknown file type.
    > jpegs do not have transparency. You can save as png instead.
I'm using it as a track matte key, so white is equivalent to transparent.  I do have to select "matte luma" instead of "matte alpha" in the effect.  I'll save your advice in case I ever do need transparency.
Follow-up:  I checked my other licensed copy.  It accepts .psds just fine.  I checked Help About for both; they're identical:  3.2.0 (374).  So the problem must be in an internal setting, an external influence, or a defective module.  And remember, it's not just me, Björn in Germany reported the identical problem in June.

  • Error when importing psd files into Premiere Pro

I am using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 and Photoshop CS4.  Whenever I attempt to import a psd file I get this error message:  "File format not supported".  I have tested it with different file sizes and properties.  My files are RGB and 8 bits/channel.  Is there any way to resolve this problem?  I am also using Adobe After Effects and importing psd files works great with it.
    Thanks

    Welcome to the forum.
The RGB and 8-bit take care of two possible causes, so thanks for getting those out of the way early on.
Does the PSD file contain Layers? Are any of them mostly Transparent, with just a few pixels, such as a small logo? Those have created issues.
What is the exact version of CS4, that you are running? Seems that there WAS an issue with PSD's in an earlier version, and that a later update fixed that.
There is another element with PSD's, that has caused issues, but my feeble mind is suddenly blank on what that was about. Seems that Colin Brougham commented on it not that long ago. I'll see if I can drege up one of those threads, but you might aslo want to do a Search on "PrPro" and "PSD," though the forum Search might still be broken. Maybe Google, and also look for replies from Colin. I'll do the same too. IIRC, one had to Open the offending PSD in PS, and just do a Save_As with a short file name, and a short Path (not buried deeply inside a sub-folder structure), and all was good, but do not recall any other details at the moment. I would also eliminate any spaces in the new file name, just to eliminate any issue there - use the _ like in the old DOS days, though do not think that one had to adhere to the old 8.3 structure.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Importing PSD's into Flash

I'm using Flash 8, and have just started importing PSDs into
Flash. I actually found the import PSDs feature in CS3, and
discovered that you can import PSDs to Flash 8 as well.
The problem is, there is a color shift-the PSDs imported into
Flash appear lighter than they do in PS, or than a JPEG of the same
image appears when imported into Flash. I have noticed the same
problem with PNG's as well. They also appear lighter than a JPG of
exactly the same image when brought into Flash....
Does anyone know of any fix for this? Is it something to do
with color-profiles in PhotoShop (of which I know little about)?
    Thanks!

How was the original art created? Was the original RGB or CMYK? What is the resolution of the Photoshop file? Flash only works well with RGB and 72 pixel per inch resolution. If your original art is not set this way, then Flash will attempt to convert it as it imports it. Flash uses the sRGB color space. You'll get the best color translation if your Photoshop file is using this color preference.

  • Importing .psd into Illustrator with Windows 7

Since installing CS3 design premium onto my new Windows 7 computer, I have run into difficulty when trying to import .psd files. Trying to import the file usually doesn't do anything. Even when I open a file with a linked .psd file, it pops up with an error message "An error occurred trying to read the linked file 'xxxxxxxxx.psd.'" Reimporting file doesn't do anything. Either nothing happens or I am told I do not have enough memory to complete the action
For the most part, I've worked around this by saving my .psd as .tiff and importing the new file format. However, when I need to import a .tiff with transparency, Illustrator it tells me that Illustrator doesn't support that type of .tiff file.
Is this a Windows 7 issue? Or something else?
    I am running Windows 7 Pro, Core i7, 1.73GHz, 64-bit, 6GB RAM.

    Harron, Hi
I have both Vista 64-bit OS and Win7 64-bit OS and am running CS4 and CS5 suites.  I have had not a single problem Placing files into Illustrator CS4 or CS5 from Photoshop (32-bit) CS4 or (32-bit) CS5 [CS4 to CS4 and CS5 to CS5].  I cannot vouch for CS3 and I cannot troubleshoot earlier versions of CS such as CS(1) since CS(1) doesn't operate on 64-bit platforms with much success.
