Importing PSD with Layer-Groups in AE - No align Anchor Point

Hey folks!
I am importing a PSD file into AE.
This PSD includes "normal layers" and "layer-groups".
At the import-dialouge i choose "Footage Dimension: Layer Size", to get the anchor point in the center of my objects.
This works just fine in case of the "normal layers", but the "layer-groups" (wich turn into comps in AE) didn't have an align anchor point. Instead of this it is in the center of the whole PSD-file.
Is there any trick to handle this problem?
Thanks a lot!

That's a limitation you have to live with. After all, the PSD dimensions are used for the comp size and in PS groups are just that - organizational structures, not real transform hierarchies, so there is no persistent information.

  • Import psd with layer groups in AE CC - "Retain Layer Sizes" not working

Hi All,I created some shape layers in Photoshop and grouped them separately. Then imported this psd file into AE. I checked "Retain Layer Sizes" however all the layer-groups have the same size bounding box as document size instead of at the layer size. If I ungroup them in Photoshop and then import it, the "Retain Layer Sizes" just worked fine.
    Environment:
    Mac OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
    Photoshop CC 2014
    After Effects CC 2014
    in Photoshop:
    in After Effects:

    Thank you Rick!
Yes I noticed that. I wonder if it is possible that to make bounding box to extend to only the dimensions of the subsequent layers instead of document size? Now you can see that the anchor points are not located at right place. The reason I grouped layers in Photoshop is that I want to transform or animate one group at same time.
    Sorry for my poor English

  • Problem importing PSD (with multiple groups and layers) into After Effects. Help!

I created a "comic strip" in photoshop (multiple rectangle shape layers, then various shapes within each box for each frame of the comic strip) that I want to import into AE. When I import it as a composition (to keep my layers), however, what appears is an simply a black image with white lines where the lines of the comic strip used to be. I checked the color modes, but they are both in RGB so I don't think that's the problem. Also, when I double click the cartoon strip composition, I can choose certain groups from the mini flow-chart at the top left and view those individual frames. However, I can't view the entire comic strip as a whole, which is necessary for my animation. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, as I'm on a tight time constraint. Thanks!

When I asked what version down to the last decimal, I meant it. After Effects version should start with 11, but we need the numbers after that too.
And I understand that you want to pan between them, so just put all the different PSD's you import into the same comp and pan between them.

  • Photoshop Actions: Problem with layer groups

I have recorded several photoshop actions with multiple adjustment layers in layer groups. They work perfectly fine, as long as I do not run a second action with a layer group in it.
As soon as I run a second action with layer groups, the layer order is completely random and messed up. How can I avoid this problem?

  • 13.02 info window not working with layer groups?

Normally when you have an adjustment layer selected the "info" window will display the before and after color values for the point under the cursor as well as any color samplers.
Since upgrading to 13.02 when the selected adjustment layer is inside of a layer group it will display the values as after/after instead of before/after.

  • BUG? - Vector shapes move after when resizing PSDs with layer comps.

I use layer comps to show different interaction steps through my designs.
Designing mostly for mobile, i create at @1x (72 Pixels/Inch) resolution, and then scale up to @2x (144 PPI) and @3x (216 PPI) to get my assets for higher resolution devices.
However when i scale the PSD, all vector shapes within it offset themselves by one pixel up and to the left for @2x resolution and two pixels for @3x resolution, meaning all my careful alignments go out the window. Raster elements and text fields behave as they should and do not shift.
All my vectors shapes are bang on the the pixel to begin with so that's not a factor, and the scaling is a multiple so again that isn't the cause either.
You can see the issue in the image attached.
The obvious white edges along the right and bottom edges are revealed after the scale and layer comp change as the shapes shift.
The bitmap layers equivalent on the right are fine.
You can try it for yourself by downloading this PSD...
    http://neonstate.com/scale-layer-comps-test.psd
    1. Open the file
    2. Change the resolution by going to Image / Image Size and entering 144 or 216 as the resolution.
    3. Step through the layer comps, you'll see after the first layer comp is changed that the vector shapes shift, affecting all layer comps.
I'm sure this didn't used to happen, but what it means is I can no longer use this technique.
    I'm using Photoshop CC 2014.2.2 / 20141204.r.310 x64
    Any help much appreciated.
    Rob

    Hi again,
The purpose of this checkbox in the Layer Comp settings is to remember the positions of items, if you turn it off then you can save the positions which defeats the point a bit.
I've created another example to better explain - http://neonstate.com/scale-layer-comps-test-reposition.psd
If you step through the layer comps you'll see the shapes move from one position to the next, i've set these positions specifically.
Now change the resolution to 144 or 216.
Everything looks fine until you step through the layer comps - the boxes change position as they should, but the vector ones are incorrectly offset to the top left.

  • Continual problem with importing PSDs

    Hey guys and gals,
This is my first post!!!Woo! Anyways...
Im currently trying to import PSDs with a transparent background and they just dont work! How frustrating! I noticed some other posts when searching and tried the suggestions, with variying success!
Is there a simple way to import graphics from PS CS2 to Motion without loosing effects, filters and transparencies??
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.....
    PM Dually 1.25 G4 & PB 1.67 G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    Heya,
Because the PSD format is propietary, masks, layer effects and adjustment layers do not translate into Motion. You'll need to rasterize/apply any masks to turn them into regular-flavor transparency.

  • 3D PSD file import : how to change 3D anchor point in AE ? Challenge..!

    Hello everyone,
I've successfully imported a 3D file from Photoshop Extended CS4 into AE CS4. In AE, I can sucessfully animate rotation of the 3D object.
Here's the problem : I cannot change the 3D object's anchor point. I've tried changing the anchor point's coordinates on the controller layer of the 3D object layer, the numers change, but the anchor point remains at its initial position, as if it was locked.
I also thought changing the anchor point in PS Extended before importing the file into AE, but PS Extended does not seem to have an anchor point changing tool.
So I even reasoned back one step : changing the anchor point in my 3D software since the beginning. Well, not possible because PS Extended seems to create an average position for the anchor point when impoting a 3D file from a third party software. So useless changing the coordinates in the 3D software.
Photoshop Extended 3D is the only possible workflow to import 3D objects into AE that I know of.
So, is is possible to change the 3D anchor point directly in After Effects ? What blocks that point from being changed ?
This is quite a challenging problem, good luck for finding a solution ! I'm very sure that this technique is commonly needed and used when working in 3D, and that it will be of great help for many designers that want 3D in After Effects !
    Thanks again !
Note : please do not confuse simple After Effects standard 3D layer, with the 3D PSD file import layer, these are two totally different types

Any further forward with this anyone?
This is driving me insane as well...
I'm trying to create a simple comp within AE and have my clients logo fly on behind their text while rotating in 3D space.
The idea is for it to rotate on the X axis, but rotate within the logo itself (straight through the axis within the logo itself)
But when I try to rotate it, the AP is about 2.5 "logo depths" away from the logo, so when the rotation of any axis starts it looks ridiculous.
Are Adobe really trying to tell us that moving the AP is not possible within AE for imported Live Photoshop PSD files?
Hopefully a solution comes along soon as I cannot for the life of me figure out a workaround to the problem......
    Cheers,
    Paul.

  • Layer group problem

    Mac OS X 10.10, PS CC 2014.2.1.
I have a large file with layer groups. I can click to open and close the layer group, but when the group is open, when I click on a specific layer to work on it, the layer group closes. The problem appears to have arisen after I tried saving the file and getting a "too big to save as TIFF" warning. I can't swear that these two things are connected, but before I tried to save, the layer group worked fine, and after I tried the save, it didn't.

New info. When I saved the file as a PSB file, the issue resolved. So there seems to be a bug that appears under uncommon circumstances. But there is a way to work around it.

  • Moving anchor point using spacebar while drawing with pen?

If you're an Illustrator user, you may be familiar with the ability to move the active anchor point of the line, by holding "Spacebar" and dragging during the drawing process. This is a useful timesaver for creating complex paths. While Photoshop CS6 has introduced some useful new path-editing features, this is one that is still missing. I cant' figure out why Adobe does not make the pen tool identical between the two programs. This is an old feature in Illustrator. Don't the Adobe programmers talk to each other.
I'm just hoping/wishing someone could tell me the feature can be accessed in some other way, withing Photoshop.

Thanks, conroy. Yes, I'm familiar with that feature, but it requires clicking on the anchor point and dragging. The feature missing in PSD is the ability to move an associated anchor point while "holding" an associated direction point. This feature is activated, in AI, by holding down the Spacebar. It's a real timesaver and I miss it in PSD.

  • AE CS5 - Shape Layer - Anchor point moves after position keyframe

I am experiencing unintuitive (to me) behaviour with a brand new shape layer. Here are the steps to reproduce the issue. I have made a screen cap of the problem but can't figure out how to upload it to this forum.
    1. In an existing composition, I create a new Shape Layer
    2. By default the anchor point (center point) is in the dead center of the shape layer. Perfect.
    3. I turn on Position keyframing, and add a position keyframe at my current time
    4. Instantly the anchor point now jumps to the center of the composition, and so now when I scale my shape layer it doesn't scale properly
If I try to use the Pan Behind tool, I get position keyframing. Besides, I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO DO THIS, since the anchor point was in the correct spot to start with, and it's only because of this keyframing "bug" that the anchor point jumps.
What am I missing or doing wrong? How can I add a position keyframe to a BRAND NEW LAYER that has no other animation on it, and still keep the anchor point in the dead center of my shape?
    Thanks for your advice,
    Tom

Thanks to Rick and Mylenium for your helpful answers. Rick, I'd prefer not to have to manually reposition, because I'm never going to be as mathematically precise as the software for positioning the Anchor Point dead center.
Using the transform controls on the shape rather than the global container certainly did the trick! You guys are great. Thanks.
    [rant]
In my defense as far as the constant exhortations to "RTFM", we all know that most veteran software users only go to the manual when there's a problem. You also know that Adobe's help system (particluarly in regards to search) has gotten worse over the years, not better. So when I run into a situation like this, I'm going to search through the help for what I believe the problem is: namely "anchor points", "transformations" and "keyframes", and maybe "shape layers". This is a fair amount of research, and it's exactly what I do as my first line of defense.
The second line of defense that most tech savvy folk do, is a Google search; for example: "anchor point moves after position keyframe" or "After Effects shapes layer anchor point moves keyframe" etc. And you spend your time sifting through forums trying to find the relevant answers. I feel that THAT is my true due diligence, rather than reading the F'n Adobe manual that is so very very sparse.
So after my due diligence, I turn to the experts communities, because there I know I will get educated, reliable help within a reasonable turnaround time. And because I myself contribute to these same forums in areas where I have higher than average expertise. The Adobe Forums have proven to be one of the great online resources.
Finally, now that I have a great answer from two knowledgeable experts (thanks again!), I've also enriched the community, because of the way I have crafted my post title, hopefully the next poor ******* who has a similar problem and a similar methodology to finding resolution will stubmle upon my post because I've tried to overload the title with relevant keywords that will generate hits in google.
Through my question, and your accurate answers, the global knowledgebase has improved.
So forgive me for not memorizing the F'n Adobe online help. I go to the resources that are the most useful, expedient, and provide the greatest value as a whole.

    Peace,
    Tom

  • Importing layer groups from photoshop to flash cs4

    Hi everyone,
I have about 5 layer groups in Photoshop and in each of the groups/folders there are some layers with some text and other layers with isolated images and also layers with some layer styles. When I import this file into Flash I need each of the layer groups to be imported as a flattened bitmap image. I don't want any of the text to be editable or to have any of the layer styles intact. So if there are 5 layer groups in Photoshop, I just need five bitmap images in flash. I've tried doing this but it still imports the layers separately. I know I can flatten the groups in Photoshop but I want to keep this file editable.
Does anyone know how to do this?
    Appreciate any help.

    Harry Kunz wrote:
Then why not flatten it (BUT not save it) and import it into flash THEN revert the photoshop file (CTRL+Z) so it will still be editable version?
Yeah I know that's an option but I just thought there might be a quicker way, but maybe not.
    Thanks for the suggestion though.

  • Photoshop Motion Workspace Import Layer/Group

Rather than having hundreds of layers in a movie file, I want to edit (rough trim, sound whatever), save or copy those sections or chapters as separate files, then import those edited video groups (even if it is flattened as a dot PSD file) into the separate overall movie file timeline for final arranging and editing.
Obviously one cant just Ctrl C, Ctrl V a layer or group because that copies and dumps the original raw clip not the edited clip, into the time line.
There's probably a simple answer but I cant manage to import a dot PSD file to another file. All I can do is render a file to video, which means selecting codecs and output settings, then import that file. Gets pretty unwieldy.
Does anyone have any tips. Im on Photoshop whatever they are calling the monthy renter, and its fine for what I am doing. I don't have premier pro.
    Thanks

Just in case anyone has the same enquiry, and apologies Im only new to this.
Edit your clips and and file save to a selected folder you can easily keep track of. Photoshop will assign the file save a .psd (which is the default working format it converts to when it reads your camera file into photoshop) If you want to further edit later leave the default "Layers" ticked in your save routine.
When you want to bring your clips into your movie timeline, save the edited clips (as copies, whatever) but untick "layers" in the save dialogue box and this will flatten the .psd clip file.
In your movie file its probably safest to create a new video group/ add media/ select your folder and check "all formats". In mine, "all formats" is last in the list and for some strange reason is hidden off the bottom of the page. It is there, if you cant see it, select any format half way down the roll out, then select your format again and the list will read down from that last selection to reveal "All Formats"
You can safely edit all your camera clips and then bring them into your movie without first rendering them out to a video format and wasting hours of  time. Photoshop isn't stupid.
Before I mentioned flattening the edited clips, if you forget to untick "layers" on saving your edited clip, it will still import the unflattened .psd clip without showing the layers in the layers panel, and you will be able to see and play it. But as soon as you touch it, you will get an error message and it will vanish.

  • Problem With Imported PSD

I have a PSD with transparent layers.  When imported to Flash, some of the transparent layers have border colors along the edges which aren't in the PSD.  Is this a limitation of the Flash Importer, or is there some setting to strict transparency on the edges?

Check File > Document Settings > Raster Effects
    Settings.
The default is 72 dpi which is good enough for screen. 300
dpi is for print (press) but it may make screen redraw very slow.
Note that raster effects do not work well, or at all, in
FreeHand, especially with cmyk colors. And yes, most of the effects
    will blur the object (!?!).
Probably the best way to create these effects is to use
Phothosop. Also in Illustrator the raster effects do work.

  • PSD files always imported as one layer QuickTime

Does anyone know how to work around the bug in DVD SP 4.2.1 that formats every imported PSD file to Quick Time format destroying the layer structure?
No matter if the file has layers or not, no matter if the file is saved in PSD, TIF, JEPG, etc the files appears as Quick Time one layer in DVD SP once imported.
The files generated in PSD (CS4 11.0.1) are 8-bit, RGB, multiple layer or flattend image, standard size, nothing strange.
Several months ago I did a similar work and had no problems.
    What's happening? Any idea?

Did you ever read my reply in post #5?
My suggestion would be to download a trial version of Photoshop, whatever runs on your machine, and use the Image Processor in Photoshop to batch convert all your files as TIFFs before the 30-day trial period is over.
