Importing QT files into FCP

Hi there I'm a FCP newbie,
I 'm trying to import QT files into FCP, I extracted two files off a DVD using handbrake tp MP4 format and then opened them with Quicktime Pro and compressed them as a QT.mov. One of the movies imported successfully into FCP the other did'nt, and the error message I file recognized (0) access denied 1 unknown. Note I have used exactly the same compression settings for both files, any help would be appreciated.

MP4 is a delivery codec. To make things easier, use MPEG Streamclip to do the DVD extraction. That will extract the video directly into a Quicktime movie file which FCP can edit natively.

  • Not able to import .motn files into FCP

For some reason I'm not able to import .motn files into FCP. While in FCP, I use "send to motion" and uncheck the embed box. After motion opens and I add my motion content, I get the following error when trying to import the .motn file back into FCP "File Error: 1 files(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown". What is strange is that I'm able to create another test FCP project with different media, and everything works fine. All tests and media are done on the same drive.
I'm using the latest updates of everything FCP 5.0.4 and motion 2.0.1
    Any ideas anybody?
    Thanks!

  • If I actually import full files into FCP, can I then drop source files into the trash?

If I actually import full files into FCP, can I then drop source files into the trash?   I'm editing now and want to free up HD space.

Just to confirm: in Preferences, Import, Files..."copy to library storage location" is selected.
So I assume I can dispose of source files.
Thanks for quick reply and also the the cautionary note.
This is low-level family footage I export to .mov and share on YouTube, so originals are not critical.

  • Trouble importing .mov files into FCP X

I'm relatively new to FCP so this could be a really easy fix. I took a bunch of short video clips (20s --> 1.5 min) on my Panasonic ZS25 and imported the clips to my MacBook Pro (2008 with 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory and 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor). [I have version 10.8.4 of OSX]. The clips from my camera were in .mts format so I used the Smart Convertor Pro App from the App Store to convert all 80 files to a .mov format. Both the converted clips and FCP X are stored on my 700 GB external, and while I tried to import the clips into FCP X, the program almost immediately froze and shut down. Thinking I "overloaded" (for lack of a better word) FCP X, I decided to try and delete the blank clips that were showing up in the program. However each time I attempted to click on a clip the program crashed again. I eventually was able to delete all the clips, and decided to move the converted clips from my external to my desktop. Once they were moved I then tried to import just one clip from the desktop to FCP X (which is still run through my external). Although it was successfully imported, once I clicked on the file to play it in FCP X the program crashed again.
What can possibly be the problem and what can I do to fix it?
Note: This is my first time using both my new camera (and having to deal with this .mts BS) as well as FCP X.

Thanks Russ, Tom, and Hughmass for all your input. It really is appreciated. Unfortunatly even after moving FCPX to my desktop and converting the .mov files in MPEGstreamclip, importing the movie clips into the program still causes random shut downs. Perhaps the clips are corrupted or something? I honestly don't know, and I'd rather kind of just ignore this problem then keep hashing away seeing as the clips aren't that important (and yes, being super smart, i deleted them off the camera well before hand).
Just to make sure FCPX works, I took some short clips on my Panasonic DMCZS25, and imported them successfully into FCPX and was able to edit together a quick piece. Thanks again for all your help!

  • Importing XML files into FCP 6

I recorded some footage using a Panasonic P2camera. I sent the files across to my media drive using fire wire but when I try to import the XML files from my media drive into FCP it tells me: *Please choose a translation document file*. Do I need a driver ? What am I doing wrong ?

There should be a text file along with the P2 media you recorded. That has to be transfered as well.

  • Cannot import video files into FCP

Every time I try to import a file (.mov , .mpg , .m4v) FCP gives me an error message reading "File Error: File Unknown" If I try and import through the drop down menu, the error reads "File Error: 1 file(s) Recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown"
The only file that seems to work is a .avi
This started happening when I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
    Please Help

    Here's a couple solutions ...
I had this problem this week as well. Suddenly I couldn't import any type of media into FCP. After trying a few things like reinstalling FCS 2 and talking to other people, I called up Apple Support. They walked me through a few more efforts to solve the issue or at least get an idea of what causes the problem.
What we discovered is that when I created a new user profile for my iMac and logged into that profile, everything in Final Cut worked fine. I could import media with no problem. THUS, the issue seems to be connected to my computer profile. So I was presented with two options:
Option 1: Create a new user profile and either migrate all my content over to it or simply edit from that profile.
Option 2: The Nuclear Option. Back up all your content you don't want to loose, pop in your OS X disk, restart the computer holding C, and select the option to erase your hard drive and install OS X from scratch.
I figured that after two years of a **** of a lot of editing and other work on this computer, it was time to just go for the Nuclear option and obliterate everything off of it and start fresh. Takes a while to do, but I've just confirmed that I'm able to import media again in FCP.
So, sadly it's not a real simple option like deleting your preference files, like other FCP issues, but there is way to clear up this issue. The important thing to note here is that reinstalling FCP didn't work for me, and doing an Archive Install of OS X which still keeps my user profile essentially intact also keep the problem intact and solves nothing.
Now, if you have to get a project your editing out the door right away, just create a new profile and get busy editing. But once that project is done, or if you have the time right now, I think the best option is the Nuclear Option. Back your stuff up and then clear your hard drive out and start anew.
I hope that helps guys. I know how crazy I was going not finding anything on a forum to help me out.

  • Trouble importing .mov files into FCP...

Hello, all. Hope someone can help me solve this problem.
I just installed Final Cut Pro on my machine, much to my delight, and immediately set about attempting to edit a video project I was commissioned for. However, I quickly stumbled into a big problem: the files I'm attempting to edit (all .mov format) refuse to import properly into FCP. Despite the fact that they play flawlessly in Quicktime, when imported to FCP, they require an inordinate render time when placed in a sequence and, what's worse, do not render properly. The picture jumps frames in the preview, and, once rendered, a red flash is introduced in place of the missing frames, generating a seizure-inducing mess that is already giving me quite a headache.
How can I fix this problem? I am open to the idea of file conversion, but don't understand why .mov won't work. I've searched the Internet for answers and found little to no information on how to solve this. Please help!

My problem, every single movie file that i import will show red in FCP, no exception.
That means that you are brining in QT file types that FCP does not work with natively.
I cant imagine what file/codec type FCP is designed for but I tried files from my phone, two different video cams and two different still cams with video option.
FCP is designed to work with professional cameras, and a slew of consumer types. It is NOT suited for raw cel phone video, and most video types that point and shoot cameras record. For those cameras you need to convert the footage to the type that FCP works with. If you look in the EASY SETUPS in the Final Cut Pro menu, you will see the codecs that FCP works with.
ALL of these BTW, work in imovie.
Because it is meant to be used with consumer formats. But note, it converts a lot of the footage to an Apple codec in the background...or does rendering in the background to a uniform codec. It is designed for people who just want to drop footage in and go. But lacks many professional attributes. BUT, if it works, use that.
Is it just a fact of life that I have to get all types of video codec conversion software to be able to use FCP with typical video files?
Just one...MPEG STREAMCLIP. Convert everything to DV/NTSC.
Or get Adobe Premiere Pro. It is designed to work with files natively.

  • Importing psd files into FCP

Every time I create a layered file in photoshop with fx like bevel and imboss, gradient overlay, inner glow etc, and import it into FCP, it shows up as a layered file (sequence) but does not show any of the fx (eg. text is plain white when it should be blue, no bevel and emboss just completely flat, no drop shadow, nothing). Can somebody help me? Pleeeeeease!

You need to Rasterize text elements and Layer Effects such as Bevel, Emboss and Shadows in Photoshop, before you import them to FCP.

  • Importing vector files into FCP

Hi all. I have a 720x480 project in which I need to import vector logos and titles. How do I best bring those files into an SD formatted project without it rasterizing? As always, thanks.

    Hi -
I do not believe you can use vector based imported graphics in FCP. The FCP site list the following file types are acceptable graphic formats, but I believe all PSD layers need to be rasterized before importation:
I usually rasterize the graphic at least twice the frame size of the sequence I am working in then scale the graphic accordingly once on the timeline.
    Hope this helps.

  • Importing FCE files into FCP

    Hi,
I have some old FCE projects. My question is whether I am import the FCE project into FCP?

I think you can just do a file > open and open them right up. you might get a warning that you are opening an older version and of course once saving you probably won't be able to open them in FCE again... so I would make a duplicate first then open away.

  • Importing .m4v file into FCP

I have a .m4v file that was created by HandBreak. This file was of a live concert. I wanted to edit it into individual songs so I needed to get it into FCP. I looked around and found Wondershare Video Converter Pro. I converted it to a Quicktime. The file size was dramatic. Original file = 4.06GB. The .mov ended up at 550MB. The problem is the .mov quality was pretty bad.
Is there a better way to do this? Can I use a different format that FCP can import? I care more about quality than size, at least while I'm editing in FCP.
    Thanks

Did you copy the contents of the VIDEO_TS folder to the computer's hard drive as per the tutorial?
    Yes, I did that.
Your internal drive rotates at 7200 RPM whereas a DVD is around 850 RPM. That makes quite a difference. Even a five year old G4 should convert a 1GB .vob in around 20 minutes.
Or are you doing something else that needs lots of CPU resources at the same time?
No, nothing else is going on. I just looked and the VTS011.VOB file is only 1.07GB in size. Any other suggestions? I have it copied to my internal drive. I have an iMac I got new last November. Not that old... I am now at 53% completed. I started the conversion at 10:30 AM, it is now 5:00 PM. That's 6 1/2 hours to convert a 1Gb file. Seems odd...
    Thanks

  • Importing mpg files into FCP

A client brought me their external HD, and I am seeking to import footage into FCP. The video comes across fine, but their is no audio...what am I missing here?

You can't work with MPEG files in FCP. Yours also have multiplexed audio which is why you can't hear them.
You need to convert the files with [MPEG Streamclip|http://www.squared5.com]
See my MPEG Streamclip tutorials: [Part One|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2059475&tstart=0] and [Part Two|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2070861&tstart=0]

  • CONVERTING and IMPORTING .VOB files into FCP?

    Hi.
I made a dvd of an old vhs tape of mine using a Sony consumer vhs-->dvd component.
Haven't had any trouble in the past using MPEG streamclip to convert .vob files and import into fcp (from dvd's NOT made on this particular machine) --but for some reason, this dvd doesn't seem to contain those files.
The icon of the dvd appears as a folder on my desktop with a small red circle on it.
The dvd plays fine on my G5, but the folder appears to be empty when opened.
    I'm stumped.
    Anyone?

Buy or hire one of these: http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advcprofessionalfamily then you can capture the tape directly into FCP as a QuickTime .mov that uses the DV codec.
Don't forget to switch the *Device Control* setting in Log & Capture to *Non-Controllable Device* first.

  • Importing .MTS files into FCP 10

I just purchased a Canon C-100 and am delighted with the results.  However, I need to know how to import the .MTS files into Final Cut Pro-10.  I have imported the files to one of my hard drives, but FCP-10 does not recognize them.

    Hi kennethcnelson!,
Final Cut Pro should support the MTS format.  In order to be recognized, the files must be within the identical folder/file structure on the camera.
If this is a time sensitive-matter, additional support options are available at Contact Us.

  • [HELP] No audio track on imported MPG file into FCP

I am trying to import a 1hr 50min mpg into FCP. If I open it in QT or even in Windows Media Player on the PC, it opens fine. However, when I import it into FCP, I get the video track, but no audio tracks. I am still rather new to FCP, so I am sure this is a simple solution. Please help.
    Thanks...

Welcome to the forum, David. As Wes said, you need to DeMUX the MPEG. There are a few ways to do this. MPEG Streamclip is one, bbDemux, another is DVDxDV.
    Good luck
