Importing Quicktime Clips

Hello.
I recently purchased a DVD camcorder, and finally was able to find out how to import the DVD to quicktime, through Handbrake. My new problem is when I try to import the quicktime files to Final Cut Express, it gives me an error message.
Not sure what I am doing wrong. I am importing it as a MP4 File, at 29.97 fps..any other ideas what I am doing wrong?
Any help would be great, thanks!
Mac Book Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

... in addition to Tom's reply:
to convert DVD's content with Streamclicp (www.squared5.com), you have to purchase additionally for 20$ the mp2-playback-component from Apple ( http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/ )
don't expect wonders in quality... mp2 is, as Tom said, a playback/delivery codec, not meant for further processing, e.g. it stores only every 15th frame, to convert the 14 others, your Mac has to "estimate" the content of it ... (=loss of pic quality)
to get serious into editing, swap your device into a miniDV camcorder.....

  • I am doing some editing... Is it better to import quicktime clips or mpeg4 clips?

    Anything will help. Thanks

If I had the choice, I would choose QuickTime. But that .mov file format can be thought of as just a wrapper for an actual video clip encoded a certain way. Meaning a QuickTime .mov file could internally be the same as a .mp4 file, and at the same time be wrapped in the .mov file format to make it compatible with QuickTime.
To see what kind of codec your QuickTime clips are in open one of them in QuickTime Player, then under the Window menu> Show Movie Inspector
So in my example I can look under the Format: and read back that the codec the .mov file is using internally is Apple Intermedia Codec (AIC). The codec has more of an effect on the 'quality' of the video than the file format itself .mov which is really just an envelope or wrapper around the Apple Intermediate Codec video clip itself.

  • What would cause iMovie 10 to fail to import a QuickTime clip?

As I've been editing several clips that were downloaded from SD card as QuickTime clips, all of a sudden iMovie 10 won't import one of the clips.  The import process goes through the motions, but when I click on IMPORT, it acts as if it only takes a second to finish and then the new event name is there but there is no footage.  Any idea why this would happen?  What I've done is:
    1.  Attempt to re-import the clip several times
    2.  Restart iMovie
    3.  Restart Computer
    4. Place Clip in another location and import from there
    5.  Check all info on said clip to see if there is something wrong with it.
    6.  Save event to a different hard drive.
    7.  Move imported clip instead of copy it.
    8.  Probably a couple of other things I can't remember at the moment.

  • Error -2002 when importing quicktime movie clips into iMovie Project

When I import QuickTime movie clips into my project, the scroll bar fills about 1/3 of the way, and then I get this message:
Can't open file "DSCN0812.MOV"; skipping it and continuing. I CLICK "OK," and then this message appears:
    Error during import
The file could not be imported: (-2002)
This happens to every movie clip. Anyone have any idea what's happening here?
    Thanks!

I guess, you try to import 'moving images' from a still cam, right? these are in a codec (=mov is no format, just a container) , iM doesn't support. Use the free tool *Mpeg Streamclip* www.squared5.com to convert these files to 'dv stream' BEFORE importing to iMovie.

  • Import of quicktime clip  into iMovie is distorted

I recorded video with my camera rotated 90 degrees. Obviously, when I upload the video clip it came up rotated 90 degrees. I am able to rotate it in Quicktime pro by 90 degrees so that the orientation is correct. When I import it into iMovie 6 HD, the clip is distorted - The subject looks squashed. I can't find a way to import the clip into iMovie with the correct sizing of the image.
    Thanks for your suggestions.

The problem is video is 4:3 aspect ratio. When you rotate it 90 degrees, you are making it 3:4 aspect ratio. Then when you import it into iMovie, it stretches it back to 4:3 because that is what its expecting.
You need a way to crop the rotated video back to 4:3 before importing into iMovie (or pad with black back to 4:3 if you don't want to lose anything).
I'm not sure how to do it in iMovie. I know Final Cut Pro can do it.

  • My current os x is 10.9.5, using final cut express vers. 4.0.1.  I have imported .mov clips created with a older mac os x (lion) and converted them to import into fce. after doing this as well as putting clips on the fce timeline when playing back t.h

My current os x is 10.9.5, using final cut express vers. 4.0.1.  I have imported .mov clips created on a older mac os x (lion) and when I wanted to import them into fce, a quicktime conversion window opened up and converted them (I haven't experienced this in the past). I then imported the converted quicktime clips into my fce project.  After doing this I took selected clips and put those edited clips on the fce timeline.  When playing the video back in the fce timeline,I noticed
    1) the video wasn't playing back smoothly like the original content
    2) when looking at the timecode reading of the timeline, the timecode was sputtering as well as the video and audio.  I exported to quicktime just to see if that was consistent, it was.
When I play the converted quicktime content independently of fce,  it plays normally (no sputtering of timecode, video and audio.  Need help to resolve the sputtering playback of converted video content in the fce timeline.  I've never experienced this before.  Any suggestions?

When you say you converted the clips before importing them into FCE, did you convert to AIC or DV and do the converted clips match your FCE Sequence settings exactly?  If not, go back and convert the original files again, using the intended Sequence settings as a guide.

  • How to import AVCHD clips from HD camcorder?

How I can import AVCHD clips from Sony HDR-TG1 with best possible quality to iMovie '09?
Camera records clips as 1080i format but when I import them to iMovie '09 quality are cr*p. I have a same problem with iMovie '08. This has something to do with interlacing and single field processing but is there any workaround (other than using PC)?

Preview playback may not be too good since QuickTime in general doesn't seem to deinterlace very well (when it deinterlaces at all).
Quality of exported footage varies greatly according to whether or not you select +just the right+ export settings. See this thread for details:

If exporting to SD (particularly, to iDVD), see here:

I'm planning to update this guide soonish with information on how to end up with 720p60 output from 1080i60 input (i.e. in effect treat the input as 1920x540 at 60 frames/sec progressive, turning it into 1280x720 at 60 frames/set progressive).

  • Quicktime clips out of sync in Premiere CC 2014

Just downloaded the latest update to quicktime 7 pro and all my imported quicktime files are playing in slow-mo in premiere CC 2014? I restarted after the install on my pc running windows 7. Anyone else having this problem, makesquic it real hard to edit. All clips out of sync.

I've had the same issue on one of the computers where I am.  A slightly older Mac Pro that's worked fine with no issues until this.  Latest Premiere CC installed, footage is Prores with two separate mono tracks, 720, 59.94.  That edit suite is using an AJA board for external monitoring.
The weird thing is that when troubleshooting, I brought the project over to my new Mac Pro and the project plays fine.
I went through the premiere preference settings looking for anything that looks like it'd be able to help, as well as the AJA app.  The problem definitely is introduced when footage is imported into Premiere as it plays fine in quicktime before import, though exports from Premiere pro are out of sync.

  • Why do I get a black rectangle on the left side of the screen when I import a clip in Imovie?

I import a clip into imovie 6 and I get a black rectangle on the left side of the screen. It's driving me crazy!

    Thanks for the reply.
My original source material is in Apple Intermediate Codec, with 32-bit float audio and a variable frame rate. This has not been friendly to FCP, so I use Quicktime to convert it to Apple ProRes with 24-bit audio and 29.97 frame rate. This is what I import into FCP.
My sequence settings are set to the same specs as my source material. 854x480, square pixels, no field dominance, Apple ProRes compression.
The black bar on the left side of the screen shows up before I even export. It shows up when I render everything.
I am exporting with Quicktime Conversion to:
    MP4
    h.264 codec
    720x405
    1000 video bit rate
    Main Profile
    No cropping/filters or anything.
The ONLY thing I did different before upgrading to FCP6 was that I used Apple Intermediate Codec all the way through. I was told by an FCP instructor that writes and publishes all kinds of FCP training material that I should upgrade to FCP6 and use the Apple ProRes422 Codec instead, so that's what I'm trying to do.
I am going back to restart my project using Apple Intermediate Codec all the way through like I used to, but it will be awhile before I can tell if that solved the problem. Either way, I would like to be using the ProRes codec....
    Thoughts?

  • How to import movie clips from DVD?

    Hi,
A really stupid question, and possibly this has been asked before, but I am at my wits end--is there a way I can import video clips to iMovie from a DVD disc that contains video files? When I try to select 'import movies' from the file menu, it won't import the clips because the video files contained within the dvd are VOB. IFO. and BUP. formats, and the iMovie will only read MPEG or mov. Is there a way I can somehow import these clips by changing the setting somewhere in the iMovie or am I to require some other type of application to convert these files before I can successfully import them?
I'm really only trying to make a simple short clip, nothing big. The longest it will probably be is at most 5 mins. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

Is there a way I can somehow import these clips by changing the setting somewhere in the iMovie or am I to require some other type of application to convert these files before I can successfully import them?
Not by changing a setting. Multiplexed MPEG-2 content is not iMovie '08 "edit" compatible. Either the content is recognized as being on a compatible camcorder and converts the content to an "edit" compatible compression format or you must manually convert the multiplexed MPEG-2 content yourself for import at the "Finder" file level.
    Any suggestions?
If your VOB files are not encrypted (i.e., on a homemade DVD), then they can be copied to your hard drive. Once on your hard drive, you can use any of several applications to perform your conversion. Cost and work flow depend on the application you use. I normally recommend a new user try something like iSquint for their initial attempt. It is free and simple to use. Simply drop the copied VOB file containing the video you want to the application work area, set the "Optimize for TV" option, and press the "Start" button. This will produce an MPEG4/AAC file that can be edited. Other applications can produce alternative compression formats for editing but are either more difficult to use or are not totally free. My preference would by MPEG Streamclip here, but it requires a $20 QT MPEG-2 Playback component and s much more difficult to use since it has many more options and capabilities. Visual Hub (iSquint's "big brother") is as simple to use, but is a "pay-ware" application. In any case, the free application should allow you to do what you want and then you can decide if you need/want to invest more in the way of cost, time, and/or effort in a better application.
I use Quicktime pro as well to export any file to a version that iMovie will work with
Unfortunately, QT Pro will not work in this case since QT Pro is not conversion compatible with multiplexed MPEG-2 formats. Even if you add the $20 QT MPEG-2 Playback component, it will only convert the video portion of the file. Use an MPEG-based, third-party application like those mentioned above or FFmpegX (donation-ware/difficult to use) or MPEG2 Works (Pay-ware that also requires the $20 MPEG-2 component, etc.

  • Whenever i import a clip into imovie i get interference

I've tried numerous times importing a clip into imovie that plays fine on quicktime with no interference but as soon as i imported into imovie there is awful interference. I tried switching my phone off and reimporting it but that didn't work. I have a tv that uses a portable aerial does that cause interference? I would be really glad if you could help me.

    Hi
Can this be a setting in Your Camera ?
I NEVER use any of the Camera functions - so that I have an as Clean original to start from and then I can add whatever effect later. If I go wrong I have a Clean original to re-start from.
.mov - are no Video-Codec - it is a container (sort of folder) and can hold just about anything good or bad.
Open the .mov file with QuickTime-player
    Open Inspector [cmd+I]
Read Video format (codec) : nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn
Frames per second : YY.yy fps
    What does they read ?

  • Importing Quicktime Movie Error Question

My stats: Intel iMac 2.16 GHz, 2GB RAM, OSX 10.4.8, iMovie 6.0.3 HD
I am trying to make a stylist's reel using clips from commercials that I've done. I have successfully been able to import most of the Quicktime files that I have, but have 2 that are giving me trouble. I received the clips on a DVD from the production house in .VOB form; used MPEG Streamclip to convert it to Quicktime and it plays well on my computer. When I try to import it into iMovie, I get this error message: "Error During Import. The file could not be imported: Unknown Error."
One of the files is called PPA/ Bus/60.mov
Here are the stats as in Get File ---Info:
    Kind: Quick Time Movie
    Size: 218.6 MB on disk
    Dimensions: 720 X 480
Codecs: DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, Integer (Big Endian)
    Channel Count: 2
Ownership & Permissions: Read & Write
Details: Owner (me) I can unlock it, it didn't work when I did
    Access: Read & Write
    Group: me
    Access: Read Only
    Others: Read Only
I notice that when I try to open it in iMovie, it does not "see" it.
I'm perplexed as to why I cannot import this clip. Can anyone help? I have imported bigger files into iMovie - 1 gig here, 3 gigs there; is there a limit as to how large an iMovie can be? I have 260 Gigs of HD space, so I don't think that's the problem.
Also, can I change the aspect ratio of the clip to 4:3?
I'm planning to import a slideshow of stills from iPhoto as well but want to get all of the video in first.
    Thanks in advance.

If Mpegstremclip converts it and Quicktime can play it, hmmm, I wonder if the DVD have any type of protection scheme embedded/encrypted into it?
If this is the case you should visit a site(s) that provide instuctions on how to remove the encryption. Or ask the production house to provide the clips in a more compatible/unencrypted format.
Maybe others can provide better alternatives.

I am new to FCE, but I am working on converting all of my home movies from separate dvd into one cohesive movie. What is the besst way to get the clips from the DVDs to my hard drive and into FCE. I have been using handbrake to rip the DVDs, but I can't seem to get FCE to import the clips ( I keep getting an error). What am I doing wrong?
    --Mike

MPEG Streamclip is what you want (need) to convert your DVDs to DV format for editing in Final Cut Express. It's free.
By the way, if you don't already have the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component on your Mac, you will need to get it so MPEG Streamclip can convert the files on your DVDs. It costs $19.99 and can be downloaded from the Apple website.
