Importing quicktime mov but problems!

Have cut/edited a Final cut pro movie and exported to quicktime where I have basically have put my movie playing within a cool image of an apple cinema display - had no problems with this at all.
Then open iDVD 6 on my MBP and simply insert my quicktime movie into my chosen theme. I test it and it all runs great!
But when I go to burn my movie in iDVD, it turns out ok BUT without my cool 'Apple cinema display' image!
Any ideas guys?
as i said, when i test iDVD with all bits i want, it looks fine. Its just after I burn to DVD i have this strange missing image!

Not sure if I understand this .... does your movie have the image as a sort of frame/overlay? That would mean your cinema display is only visible on the edges of the movie?
If so you probably ran into trouble with a phenomenon called overscan. Anything within the outer 5% of your frame is going to disappear when viewed on a TV ( e.g. Rolling Credits). Inside this 5% is known as the Action Safe Area and is produced by a TV behaviour called overscan. Anything within the outer 10% of your image area is not displayed as clearly as the part of the image within that border. The "sharp" 80% of your TV monitor is known as the TV Safe area.
To check this in iDVD, choose Advanced > Show TV Safe Area from the menu. This produces a grey overlay in your preview window. Anything within that area is safe, the rest may or may not be displayed depending on how close to the border of the frame it is.

Importing Quicktime movies into iMovie 6i

I'm currently running iMovie 6 on an iMac G5 (iSight) with system 10.4.11 and trying to import Quicktime movies. The movies are nothing more than 10 minute slideshows created in iPhoto 6. The first four imported with no trouble but the fifth created an error screen that said "The file could not be imported, unknown error". . . . very informative. There are still 20 gigs on my internal drive but, to be safe, I created the iMovie project on an external drive with 60 free gigs. I tried updating iMovie and iPhoto to the latest versions with no success. Then I went back to iPhoto and broke the erring slideshow into two halves, before exporting them to Quicktime movies. The first imported correctly into iMovie but the second created the same error code. Since then, I have tried three or four other "slideshow/movies" with the same recurring error.
A year ago I followed this same process successfully to end up with a final DVD. I used the same versions of iLife 6 but, of course was not at Tiger version 10.4.11. My guess is that I was at 10.4.6 at that time.
If anyone has a fix or a suggestion for this issue, I would be most grateful.

I stumbled on the problem and it's solution so I thought I would post it for those interested. After two days of frustration, I accidentally discovered that the culprit was the backslash character in the name of my slideshow. While iPhoto has no problem exporting a file with that character in the name, iMovie won't accept it for importing. This sounds like an issue related to our PeeCee friends for whom the backslash is off limits. What is most puzzling is why Apple's iMovie programmers couldn't flag it as an "illegal character" error. It certainly isn't an "unknown error".
Anyway, thanks for any thought you may have given to this issue.

Error -2002 when importing quicktime movie clips into iMovie Project

When I import QuickTime movie clips into my project, the scroll bar fills about 1/3 of the way, and then I get this message:
Can't open file "DSCN0812.MOV"; skipping it and continuing. I CLICK "OK," and then this message appears:
Error during import
The file could not be imported: (-2002)
This happens to every movie clip. Anyone have any idea what's happening here?

I guess, you try to import 'moving images' from a still cam, right? these are in a codec (=mov is no format, just a container) , iM doesn't support. Use the free tool *Mpeg Streamclip* www.squared5.com to convert these files to 'dv stream' BEFORE importing to iMovie.

Import Quicktime Movies to iTunes - Lion

I just downloaded some tutorials which are in Quicktime format. I want to load them onto my iPad and iPhone to watch while I am on the go. Historically I have had no trouble importing Quicktime files into iTunes through either File>Import or the drag and drop method.
I have tried to add my recently downloaded files to iTunes using both methods and nothing happens.
I am running Lion 10.7.1 and iTunes 10.4.1.
Any ideas on how to fix this?

I have more or less the same issue. I'm running the 10.4.1 iTunes version on my Mid-2010 17" MBP with Lion installed. So all this stuff is pretty up to date.
Before installing Lion on this machine, I imported a lot of .mov videos/movies into the previous version of iTunes without any problem.
Now I want to import into iTunes some .avi movies from my collection. Those .avi movies have subtitles, but the conversion to .mov is easy through QuickTime 7. (You just have to have your .avi and .srt files into the same folder and with the same name, you chose to "Save as", and the job is done within seconds. You get a "muxed" .mov file with integrated subtitles. Cool.)
The problems begin when I want to import that movie into the iTunes Library, 'cause it's absolutely now way to succeed. Opening the new .mov file through iTunes doesn't work. Same result wishing to go through the "Add to Library" command in iTunes, simply trying to drag-n-drop it into the main iTunes window or even dropping the movie's folder into the Library under the path "users/Music/iTunes/iTunes Media/Movies".
The nasty thing is that this move looks working fine when the movie is converted through the iSkysoft Video Coverter, but there are some problems: the present version of this app doesn't accept subtitles and the conversion takes far more time then the one through QT7.
But the nastiest thing is that I tried to add the same movie to a 10.1 iTunes version Library, on someone else's Late-2008 15" MBP running Snow Leopard and it just worked perfectly fine !
So, could anyone explain me what's wrong here: the OS ? the iTunes version ?

Why can't I import quicktime .mov movies into iMovie 08?

I exported my iPhoto slideshow to a .mov quicktime movie and tried to import it into iMovie 08 and couldn't. It won't drag in, and it is greyed out if I try to go File>Import Movie. I thought iMovie 08 could support quicktime movies!

My original post was not to address conversion of an iPhoto slideshow in MPEG Streamclip, but rather its saving in an MP4 container in order to strip the "Tween" track that iMovie '08 doesn't like. However, while reviewing your comment, I noted that the iPhoto slideshow export options have changed and no longer offers the "full animation MPEG-4/AAC" compression format. Unfortunately, my original post is now outdated, so here is an update:
1) The best approach is still to use QT Pro if you have it. I too the morning off and created a quickie tutorial which demonstrates how you can do this. CLICK HERE TO VIEW

Importing Quicktime Movie

I have a Quicktime Movie (.mov) file that is about 1 minute long that I'm trying to create a score for. I can see the movie in the media browser, and can even preview it, but when I try to drag it (or any other .mov file) into the Video Track section of GarageBand the bottom right corner of the icon I'm dragging shows a number 1 inside a red circle. When I let go of the mouse button the icon returns to the media browser and the movie does not import. I would love to know what that 1 in the red circle means, there are no alerts explaining why it won't import.

I've got the same problem. I recorded some voice in iMovie but iMovie exports them as .mov files. I cannot drop them into Garageband, I get the red circle instead of a green arrow. Oddly enough GB will play them with it's preview button.

No audio when importing quicktime movies

I have a set of Quicktime movies that I'm trying to edit in FCE. I can hear the audio without any problems in Quicktime, but not in FCE.
When I import the files, I get no audio waveforms; the meter bars seem to move ever so slightly, but it's hard to tell. Boosting the audio level has no effect at all.
Details about the QT files:
- 1v, 1a track
- 29.97 fps
- DV/DVCPRO NTSC
Audio:
- mono mix
- 48 KHz
- 24-bit integer
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem, though I don't know as much about audio and video formats as I should. Two questions follow:
My footage plays fine, with audio, in QuickTime, but when I try to import into FCE, it only imports video.
Also, for some reason, I also cannot import these files into iMovie. I get to the step where it asks which movie I'm looking to import, and it won't let me choose as in won't let me physically click on a file a movie file.
Problem with iMovie is that it does not automatically generate thumbnails anymore, for some reason, and I can't figure out how to get it to generate them.
Do you have advice for these two issues (in relative layman's terms?) Thank you so much in advance.

IDVD crashes when encoding imported Quicktime movies

I have quicktime movie slideshows that I made from iPhoto and posted on the web. The original photos have since been lost in a hard drive crash. I am trying to make a DVD with four of these movies.
They seem to import OK. They preview OK. But when I burn the DVD (or make a disk image) iDVD crashes after finishing encoding the menus and starting on the slideshow/movie encoding.
I have tried it with a slideshow exported directly from iPhoto and it works fine. I have tried doing several individual quicktime movies to see if one of them was the culprit, but it still crashes.
Any suggestions?

Whenever a movie is causing some issues, it can be better to export it as full quality DV. You can do this with QT Pro, or by importing it into iMovie. You might lose some QT special effects when you do this, but it might fix whatever glitch is causing problems.
Then use the iMovie project (or QT Pro exported DV file) in iDVD. Use "save as disk image" to test it out on one movie.

Error message when trying to import Quicktime movies

All of the sudden, I'm getting this weird error message when trying to import various Quicktime movies. I've never seen this message before:
File Error: 1 file(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown
Any thoughts why this might be happening? Any input would be appreciated.

I now see that two of them have been encoded using the AAC, Sorenson Video 3 codec which is not one I've seen before so I suspect that would be it.
The other one I'm having trouble with is encoded using Integer (Big Endian), Animation. I know I've seen the Integer (Big Endian) codec before so do you think that because it's animation that's a problem? I imported several other uncompressed files that were encoded with Integer (Big Endian) that worked fine so that's my suspicion.

Visual glitches in exported QuickTime movie (but not in FCP); any ideas?

We shot a short film with a Sony camera (standard def), but it apparently isn't compatible w/ FC Studio software. So we captured and did a rough-cut on my friend's PC rig (Adobe Premiere Pro), burned raw files of our rough cut on to dvd's, then transferred from those discs to my rig. The codec of this footage worked fine in FCP, but wasn't supported by Color. So I used Compressor to convert all referenced files to Apple ProRes 422 (HQ), as it seemed the best conversion I tried (no loss of film quality) and obviously now is supported by Color.
However, the final rendered QuickTime movie (exported from FCP) had some odd visual glitches that occur right before the end of a clip (perhaps 10-15 frames before the end): it's like the brightness or gamma level suddenly drops a noticeable amount right at the end of a clip (again, ~10-15 frames). I couldn't say for sure if it's the last 10-15 frames that are appropriate and the REST of the clip is what's out of whack.
Initially, I thought it was a problem with Color (as these were Color-corrected sequences I was exporting). But I just tried it with a non-color corrected sequence, and the errors are still there.
Any ideas what's going on? Any suggestions/solutions? Did I pick an inappropriate conversion on Compressor?

I think this may be an AVI conversion glitch.
Well I am guessing that from Premiere Pro they came out as AVI? If that is the case well the best thing to do would be to open it with Quicktime Pro and export it as DV/DVCPRO NTSC .MOV
From there you should be able to bring it into FCP without a hitch and then put color down,
But in order to save time I would try first exporting just that last little segment again throwing it into Compressor and see if it comes out okay. It may be that on capture there was some dropped frames on the end so double check that last little bit.

How do you import quicktime.mov with xml subtitles?

Received QT movies that have subtitles using tx3g (embedded xml). How can I get the subtitles into Finalcut Pro? When I import the movies in Final Cut the subtitles are missing. Tried to export the xml from QT, then import the xml into Final Cut - but it asks for the translation document - which I do not understand.

I just converted a wmv file into swf by first opening it in Quicktime (first I had to buy Quicktime Pro to export it to mov and Flip4mac to get it open in the first place, so you're ahead of the game). Then I went into the Adobe Media Encoder that comes with CS4 and converted it into a flv file from there. Then I went into flash and used 'import video', and saved it as a swf file, posted both into my website folder, and saved the skin that it generated into the main website folder where the html file is, it wouldn't show the buttons until I moved it.

Can't import Quicktime .mov into iMovie 10

Is it possible to import a Quicktime movie into iMovie 10? I used to be able to do this with iMovie 9 but cannot get it to work with 10. I can drag it into an event but no clips show up. I can't believe that Apple would require a 3rd party product to get this to work.
As a separate rant, you used to be able to edit clips directly in Quicktime but Apple removed this functionality a while back; ie. deleting parts of clips rather than just trimming from the ends. It is getting tougher and tougher to do basic editing even if you stay within the Apple ecosystem...

.mov can contain a variety of different movie formats not all of which are importable into iMovie 10. Try playing it in Quicktime player 10 - does it say it has to convert? If it converts it, the resultant file should import into iMovie 10 OK. see: OS X Mavericks: Some files may be converted when opened in QuickTime Player - Apple Support
In Quicktime 10 the way to do this is to split a movie into clips and trim each clip as required. These can then be imported into iMovie and joined as part of a project. See: QuickTime Player 10.x: Rearrange your movie’s content
Quicktime 7 Pro (which does allow removing 'middle' parts of a movie) still works in Yosemite

Importing Quicktime movies into IMovie

I have some Quicktime movies that are 868.4 MB in size and when I import them into Imovie they take approximatley 2 hours to import.
Is there a way of speeding up the process.
I have QT Pro and have tried editing the movie prior to import but the resulting file although smaller in size plays back as a green screen.
Can anyone suggest a solution. QT Pro doesnt seem to have a SPLIT feature in it like IMovie.

Why don't you just start the import at night, and let it run while you sleep? That will probably be the easiest solution.
To edit in Quicktime, copy-and-paste works the best. Open your clip, and then start a second blank Quicktime movie. Select the portion you want to use by marking the in and out points (I and O keyboard shortcuts), cut, then select your other window, and paste. Then export the pasted clip as DV stream for easy import into iMovie. Repeat for each clip. Or select the sections you don't want, and cut them from your original movie.

Importing Quicktime .move file into iMovieHD

I have been successfully pulling the files off a DVD using DVDxDV, and using that to export to Quicktime in .mov NTSC format. Then I can import into iMovie HD. It's been fine, but I have one file now that will not import. When i try to import it, it gives me an error message and says there isn't enough disk space to import it. But I was able to import other files, same size, and the window at the bottom of iMovie says there is more than 20 GB available. I thought maybe there was something wrong with that one file, so I went through the extraction process again, but that one file will still not import, even if I start a new empty project. The file is 1.4 GB, but the project has only about 25 minutes of video and this new file is about another 8 minutes.
Does anyone have any ideas? I have a 1GHZ Power PC G4, with 768 meg ram.

if it is already in DV format you really do not have to import it
There is a difference in .dv stream and a DV-encoded .mov:
You can just put a plain .dv stream in the Media folder and iMovie will digest it OK (if it is the same PAL/NTSC and 4:3/16:9 spec as the receiving project).
But this doesn't work with DV-encoded .mov files which the OP may have. iMovie HD will sort of imports it, but if you add a title, it will have bad artifacts.
I prefer to use MPEG Streamclip which, unlike some of its rivals, allows to convert DVD/VOB/MPEG to .dv stream which is iMovie's native format. For some strange reason other apps can convert to only .mov.
My only gripes with MPEG Streamclip are that the current version can't set the 4:3 or 16:9 flag to the exported .dv file (BTW, iMovie HD can't either!) and that it doesn't recognize QuickTime 7-style AIF format. The next version might fix these.
