Importing RAW from Nikon D40x

I've got a new D40x and am trying to import raw images from the camera. That much SEEMS (I'm not sure the import may just be a basic JPEG) to work. But then when I go to "external editor," that is Photoshop Elements 4 to edit, it looks like what comes back is no longer raw. Anybody out there able to help. Also, the D40x is not listed on the "supported" list for iPhoto, but seems to be for Aperature. I'd welcome any wisdom here.

Photoshop Elements 4 to edit, it looks like what comes back is no longer raw.
No, you cannot edit Raw files. What comes back from PE or any external editor is whatever format you save your converted raw file in, unless you just updated the settings for the file without actually opening it.

  • Importing RAW from Nikon 1

I recently bougth a nikon 1 camera and took photos using RAW extension.
When I first imported to Apperture, I could saw the pictures!!! But when the imports ended and I erased the files from the SD Card, photos are still there in Apperture Library but It shows the message: "Unsupported Imagem Format".
Help me to save my california's pictures!!!
    Thank you.

My files are managed - I supose. How can I be sure?
That depends on your import settings.
In the "Aperture Library" brick of the "Import Settings" panel -how did you set the "Store Files" pop up menu? If it is set to the default "In the Aperture Library", then your library is managed, else your files will be outside the Aperture library and referenced.
To test this, select an image from your recently imported project, go to the "File" menu in the main menu bar, and look at the command "Show in Finder". If the library is managed, this command will be greyed out, else you can show the original image file in the Finder and try to open it with another application.

  • Iphoto 7.1.5 won't import RAW from Nikon D5000

Just got a new Nikon D5000. Imported a few JPGs fine but the RAW files are unrecognizable. What gives? Did not have problems with my RAW files from my old Nikon D70.

I got a NIkon P6000 and their RAW file format, .NRW is not compatible with Macs although Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2 make a stab at it. I have CS3, of course, and Lightroom 1. SO, I thought of returning the camera and getting the Canon G10. Now, it turns out one needs Adobe Camera Raw 4.0 to process Raw files in CS3 and LR 1. OK, so I have not been able to find Camera Raw 4. They take you only to 5. You guessed it - only compatible with CS4, etc. Anybody know how to work with Canon Raw files in Photoshop CS3? Or where I can get Adobe Camera Raw 4.0?
    Thanks

  • Importing raw from Nikon Df possible??

I have the new Nikon Df camera, am I correct that I cannot import the raw files into Lightroom? If so, will there be an update that does include this new camera? any help or insight greatly appreciated.... idea's on how to make the import possible??

Or if you don't want to upgrade, you can download Adobe's free DNG convertor. Use that program to convert your NEF files to DNG and import those. (DNGs contain the same raw data as your NEFs, packaged in a non-proprietary format).

  • How do I import pictures from nikon d810

how do I import pictures from nikon d810?

This camera is very new, so you have to until the next version of LR is released—one that has support programmed into it.
The other thing you can do is use the DNG Converter 8.6 release-candidate available at Adobe Labs and convert you NEFs to DNGs and those DNGs will be recognized by the older LR version.
Look at the CS6 download for ACR 8.6 RC at Adobe Labs:  http://labs.adobe.com/
Keep in mind that this is a pre-release program and things may change before the final release so your photos may look different at that time.
Also, this version of DNGC 8.6 RC doesn’t recognize the new 9MP Small Raw mode from the D810 so you’ll have to shoot full-res 36MP images to work with them in LR.  Adobe has said this will be corrected in the final versions of the products, probably in a few weeks.

    Hi
    Then it's not my advice.
There are two very important things about this.
    • NEVER - move or alter any folder named iMovie Events or iMovie Projects on DeskTop/Finder - at all !
All changes must take place inside the iMovie Application - else connections break ! and iMovie can't find them.
Move Events and Projects back and hope that they will be found.
    • The external hard disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most BUT NOT FOR VIDEO - not for iMovie nor FinalCut.

  • RAW from Nikon d3000 can't import in Iphoto

    Hi,
For some reason, I can'T import RAW files from my Nikon d3000 , to iphoto. It tells me that the files are unreadable. I have all the latest updates, OS 10,5 Leopard ,what's wrong?

That's because the Raw from the D3000 isn't supported yet. As you know the Raw for each camera model is different.
Let them know you want it:

  • Cannot import lossless compressed RAW from Nikon D7100 purchased July 2014 into up-to-date Lightroom 5.5. Help!

I have looked all over the web for this answer, but have failed to find it. I have a new Nikon D7100. I took photos with it using the lossless compressed RAW format. I transferred the files on my PC using Nikon Transfer. However, Lightroom 5.5. (on the same PC) will not import the files from their folder--like it does for JPEG files. Lightroom says my version is up-to-date. Help!

No plug-in is needed to import RAW files from a Nikon D7100 to LR5.
However, if you have used certain versions of Nikon software to move the photos from the camera to a hard disk, then this may be interfering, and causing LR to not recognize the photos. The solution is to import directly from the camera card to Lightroom (if the photos are still on the camera card), or if not try http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/fix_corrupted_nef.html

  • Can't Import Photos From Nikon D3 on iPad

Is anyone else having trouble importing photos from a Nikon D3 to an iPad 3G? I have no trouble importing from a Nikon D70 but when I connect my D3, it just says "No Photos To Import" but there are 30 in there?

On the D3 do you have RAW (NEF) and Jpeg or only (RAW) NEF selected?
The follow was snipped from an article at MacWorld, you may wish to read the article.
What does it do with Raw files?
With the camera connector kit, the iPad can upload and store raw image files such as .nef (Nikon) and .cr2 (Canon). While there isn't any way to edit or work with those raw files on the iPad at this time, the iPad does create an optimized JPEG version of each image. You can use that image the same way as you would any other kind of photo on the iPad; include it in slideshows, e-mail it, or edit it in third-party apps. Your original file remains un-altered and will transfer to your computer exactly as it was on the camera or SD card. These features should allow photographers to use the iPad as a storage, preview, and transfer device for their raw files.
The optimized JPEG that they refer to is 2048-by-1360 resolution and if you use the mail function within the IPad Iphoto app, this is the resolution that is sent.
    Cheers,

  • Problem importing photos from nikon D3100 to MacBookPro

I am trying to import photos from my Nikon D3100 onto my MacBookPro, but can't do it either using iPhoto or Image Capture. iPhoto detects the images but doesn't display them. When I try to import them it says they are in an unrecognisable format. ImageCapture displays them only as thumbnails, and does not allow me to import them. Any ideas?

Are you shooting in RAW format, and if so, have you applied the most recent RAW compatibility software update?

  • Aperture is current, program will not open raw from Nikon D4

    Greetings
Having issue with opening RAW files from Nikon D4.  Very odd indeed.
    thank you for your assistance.

Nikon preview is different as it is not using the OS X raw converter.
Are you running ALL these images through the Nikon software before importing them to Aperture?  That could be a problem because while the files are saved as "NEF" they have been modified by Nikon's software.
Have you tried a D4 image straight out of the camera (i.e. read it straight off the compact flash card)?  Do not use any sort of utility from Nikon to import them from the camera.

  • BlackBox Instead of Picture when Importing Photos from Nikon D5100

We had been able to import photos (and HD movies) into iPhoto '11 in versions before 9.4.3 (720.91) from a Nikon D5100 camera SDHC 16GB memory card with no problem. In the current version however (apparently after the latest update to iPhoto '11) after importing the contents of the SDHC memory card with Nikon D5100 photos and movies, some of the photos (in raw file format) appear as black boxes in iPhoto after the import.
    So Note the following:
iPhoto ' 11 Direct Import - does not work
Direct import from Nikon D5100 SDHC (Lexar) memory card results in some photos appearing as opaqe black boxes in iPhoto '11
Nikon, Inc. Nikon Transfer app - works to get files into folder in Mac OS X
using the exact same memory card on the exact same computer (MacBook Pro) to import those same photos and movies using the "Nikon Transfer" application - ALL of the photos import into the MacBook Pro in the same raw file format.
Indirect Method of getting Photos into iPhoto '11 (never had to do this before but this works)
after getting the photos into a folder in the MacBook Pro file system using the "Nikon Transfer" application from Nikon, Inc. - iPhoto '11 is able to import those raw NEF files from the folder in the MacBook Pro file system into iPhoto '11 with no problem and those same black box pictures (observed with direct iPhoto '11 transfer) now look fine after doing an "indirect transfer" as described above ( memory card --> Nikon, Inc. "Nikon Transfer" application --> folder with raw NEF photos in MacOSX --> iPhoto '11
Has something changed in the latest version of iPhoto '11 to prevent import of Nikon D5100 photos in raw-NEF file format?
    thanks

Still don't know about the hot pink color issue but I did find I needed to download the Nikon Transfer2, not the first version.  Newer Nikon DSLR's require the second version and the disk is included with the camera purchase.  Select the option to have Nikon Transfer2 open when attaching your camera or data card to computer, then go directly to iphoto to import... don't bother importing to the View NX2 unless you plan to use it as an edit tool, etc.
So, I believe it's not iphoto's issue.... maybe it's Nikon wishing you to use their program but if you really must use iphoto, you just need to go a little out of your way.  ugh.
