Importing songs from Windows-formatted iPod to a Mac

Because everyone knows that FireWire is a **** of a lot faster than importing from CD... When I run BrokenHelix with the iPod attached, the iPod doesn't register with the computer, so I can't import that way. I have a PC, but got a Mac to take to college, and I'd like to change the formatting. Anyone have any suggestions?

then, one that's done you can use the iPod updater (in/Applications/Utilities on your mac) to format the iPod for your mac. but the windows formatting should still work on the mac.

If your iPod is set to update automatically you need to take care connecting to an empty iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Fortunately, you are going from Windows to Mac. Macs can use the Windows disk format, so your iMac can read data off of your Windows-formatted iPod. The reverse would not be true, because a Windows PC cannot read data off of a Mac-formatted iPod.
However, iTunes syncing is generally in one direction only, from the computer's iTunes library to the iPod. You cannot use iTunes to sync song files from iPod to computer. But there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer song files from iPod to computer. If you do an Internet search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links. (The CNET article seems to be popular.)
Once the songs files are on your iMac's drive, you can add them to your new iTunes library.
NOTE: Ideally, you should transfer your complete iTunes library from your old computer to your new computer. If that is possible (you still have access to your old computer with its iTunes library intact), and want to try that (instead of using your iPod as the data source), you can post back.
Photos are different. When iTunes syncs photos to the iPod, they are optimized for the iPod's small screen and stored in a single database file (to save storage space in iPod). Therefore, the images are at lower resolution on the iPod, and there is no way to extract individual photos from the database using software on your iMac. The only exception is IF you had a setting enabled in iTunes when you synced the photos to the iPod. That setting is on the iPod's Photos screen in iTunes (where you set up syncing for photos) for Include full resolution photos when syncing. If that option was checked, you can enable disk use for the iPod and look in the Photos folder using Finder to retrieve the photos.
NOTE: There may be third-party software that can extract individual photos from the iPod's database file. But they will still be the lower res versions of the original photos.

I am new to Mac (finally). I have a Windows formatted iPod (video). Therefore my iPod update button is grayed out. Is there a way to reformat my iPod to Mac? If no, what problems will this cause down the road?

To reformat your iPod for Mac, you need to Restore it on the Mac. (This will erase it entirely.)
You cannot do a software update on a Windows formatted iPod from the Mac, which is why the Update button is greyed out.

I opened the hardrive of my disk mode ipod.
I clicked on "Ipod Control" (which I though was supposed to be a "hidden file") opened the file "Music"
36 different folders with all my music dispersed randomly in each.
I copied all folders on to my hardrive.
Go to Itunes.
Go to "File" "Add to Library" all the files of randomly dispersed music. Then itunes automatically organized all those random files in my itunes library and macbook hardrive.
In a few easy steps, all the files on my ipod, all 23 Gigabytes of music was copied onto my Macbook.
That's crazy!!!

Two major reasons.
1. A Mac cannot perform a firmware update to a Windows-formatted iPod. You can sync music to it without any problem, but if you ever need to upgrade the iPods firmware when an update is released, you won't be able to.
2. A Mac-formatted iPod will perform a whole lot better on a Mac than a WIndows-formatted iPod does. It will mount faster, and data transfers will be faster as well.

No risk at all. This is a very common way to rebuild your iTunes library if it ever gets corrupted or deleted. There's also a handful of third-party applications available which basically provide a nice front-end and automate this process.

First of all, forgive me if this is a repost, as I know I have seen the resolution before, but am unable to find it.
I currently have an iPod 80GB classic, with about 40GB of music on it. I have recently purchased an iMac and want to move to a MAC formatted ipod. That is, connect and manage the ipod in a MAC environment instead of Windows.
I also want to back up all my music on the ipod to my MAC itunes library to ensure my music is all in one place.
Once all is said and done, I want a MAC formatted ipod, and not have lost my music on the ipod by reformatting it.

Hi I am trying to copy the songs/videos on my iPhone 3G which I update with my Windows PC to my new Mac.
How can I do that and reformat my iPhone without having to delete all the songs on it? Is there an external program I could use by any chance, since iTunes is limited in that sense?
And I really don't feel like paying to do this so please don't recommend some random software to purchase. Thanks in advance!

In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced with an iTunes library on a single computer, and photos can be transferred to an iPhone from a single computer. When syncing iTunes content and transferring photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPhone first. You can sync contacts, calendar events, and bookmarks with the supported applications on multiple computers.
ITunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content from an iPod or iPhone that was purchased from the iTunes store, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased from the iTunes store only.
With your iPhone connected to your MBP and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
Before syncing contacts with the Address Book and calendar events with iCal on your MBP, enter one unique contact in the Address Book and one unique calendar event in iCal. I have a bit of an interesting problem. All my life I've used Macs, occasionally a PC, but I definitely prefer Macs. Anyhow, I currently have a PC, temporarially, I will be getting an iBook late Spring this year, and I have two iPods, a 4G formatted for Mac, with all my music on it, and a 5G formatted for Windows that I just got for Christmas.
Now, my question, when I get my iBook, I want to format the new iPod for Mac and put all my music from the 4G onto it. Getting the music off of my old iPod onto my iBook won't be a problem, however I've got quite a bit of stuff on the new iPod that I don't want to get rid of. Is there anyway to connect my new iPod to my PC and hook the PC up to my iBook and transfer the files that way? Burning everything onto a CD isn't an option, my PC is super old and doesn't have a CD burner, it also has less than 1GB of free space, and I have about 4GB of stuff on the new iPod that I want to transfer over.
Any ideas? I know that I can't connect both iPods together on the same computer to transfer files, particularly considering that one would be formatted for a different system....
