Importing speed is occasionally very slow

I'm having issues importing cd's on a new 20" Intel iMac. The DVD drive is a Matshita DVD-R UJ846. Sometimes (but not always) the iMac imports cd's at very slow speeds (1.1x-2.0x). Almost every time this happens there are audio problems with the imported track. There are other times when I import cd's and everything is fine.
The problem reappeared tonight. I tried importing the disc in question on my wife's G4 iMac and it worked fine. I also hooked up an external DVD burner and imported the disc again and it was fine with no audio problems. It also imported much faster with the external burner (20x speeds as opposed to a top speed of 8x with the internal drive).
Is the internal drive bad? I have burned several DVD's in iMovie with no problems.
Thanks,
Ron

• My internet speed suddenly went VERY slow on all browser

I am running on a Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5, 2 Ghz Intel i7, 4GB Ram DDR3.
I am experiencing very slow internet speed after some system update some time ago.
I have tried using wireless and LAN cable but both results the same.
I've tried resetting routers in both my office and home but it is still as disappointing.
Kindly advice on what to do? I've forgotten which update is it as it is some time ago already.
I have installed bootcamp in my macbook and tried the using from windows but there isn't such issue. The internet was smooth and great.

Try these basic troubleshooting steps.
1. Quit all app scompletely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
2. Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
3. Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.

• Re: Good speed from exchange, VERY slow at home

I am also suffering from very slow throughput and just across the road from the BMW garage 01278 code.  The strange thing is that I did a speedtest this morning via iPad and I got 920kb/s down and 114.2kb/s upload @ 0710 so I come home tonight and test again back to 63.2kb/s down and 106.1kb/s upload ????.  I have gone via test socket on master socket and reset my router also.  See below screenshot via BT Broadband Speed Test site tonight at 18:43.  I have an egineer booked from 1300 to 1800 on Monday 10th Feb.  The speed seems to have gone down hill since the fibre install I requested failed due to copper issues and has never been the same since in the evenings.

• Importing files in Comp. very slow

Hi everyone,
I have to convert Sony MTS AVCHD files into prores LT to edit them with other LT video files. Compressor can do it without problem.
But when I import MTS files in Compressor there is a long time of lagging before I can start the encoding.
Do you know why I have to wait so much during the importation ?
Those are 2 or 3 go MTS video files.
Can't find a better way to do it.
Thank you very much !

Sorry your h,264 trancode is slower than expected. I know ways to speed up Compressor, but not MPEG Streamclip.
Do you have friends who have more powerful CPU's and could give you access to their machines? For example, there is a huge difference between the processing power of a hyper threaded Core i7 and a Core 2 Duo. Other than getting upgrading your hardware, I can't think of what could improve processing times. Streamclip really is pretty fast – even if it seems not to be. (Very surprised you find it slower than QT Pro.)
Good luck.

• Archiver Import & Indexing is running very slow

Dear All,
We have OracleTextSearch search engine configured for Metadata only indexing. The server specs for application and database machines are way high & underutilized.
FileStoreProvider is used to store content in WEBLESS mode on a filesystem.
Our Archiver Exports are quite fast but Imports are pathetically slow. We suspect that the Indexing is the culprit.
Indexer is configured for 25 items per batch, 1000 items per checkpoint.
What various factors do you think can slow down the Indexer?
We have several content stuck in GENWWW due to an earlier bug in DIS Outlook integration. Could those be an issue and is there a way to move them to released state.
Regards,
Prateek

Hi Prateek,
I'm a bit confused with this statement "We have OracleTextSearch search engine configured for Metadata only indexing."  OracleTextSearch is a full text indexer.  How would you configure OTS itself as "metadata only" indexing?  I would think that instead of using OTS, it would be more efficient to set the SearchIndexerEngine to "DATABASE.METADATA".  Maybe this is the case already, but I'm just puzzled by the statement.
Indexing just metadata, though, should not be that performance intensive.  There are a couple of things that jump out.
- File system access with regards to read/write.  Even though you are using a webless state for STORAGE, the actual files being indexed would have to be resident on the file system during the indexing operation (unless the process has changed, which I don't think is the case, as the items are not indexed directly within the database itself.  This would be true even though it's meta-only. It's just the way the product is written as I recall).  You then would be subject to any other file system limitations, such as sufficient space, virus scanning, etc.  Keep in mind that a txt file with the index value gets written, and this txt file is processed in the index insert/update operation.  Slow writes/reads of this file would affect the process.
I point out the file system since the observation was made that the system is relatively underutilized.  I've seen many high-end processor/memory configurations get sabotaged with slow disk/SAN/NAS access.
- Database access/performance.  If searches are slow in addition to the indexing being slow, I'd think you'd be well served by looking at the database for some maintenance operation, like recomputing statistics, rebuilding indexes, etc.

• ITunes Home Share file transfer occasionally very slow

Hello... I just wanted to ask a question about a situation that occasionally occurs with my iTunes Home Sharing. Sometimes, the transfer of files from my Windows to my Mac is extremely slow. It does eventually finish successfully but this only happens once in a while, as the transfer process is usually a breeze. I wanted to know if when the connection isn't as strong and the transfer is slow, do my files get in any way damaged or incorrectly transferred? Like, bitwise? (is data lost or missed etc...). I know that moving digital media around can be a bit sketchy sometimes.
Thanks.

Golybs wrote:
is there a way to find out why "a file is in use" / what process is using it, and kill that process?
Yes. Launch the Terminal utility and enter this command:
sudo lsof | grep "sometext"
That character after "lsof" is a "vertical bar", which should be on the far right of the row with "P". The first character of "lsof" is a lower-case letter "L". The text "sometext" should be replaced with at least part of the name of the file that seems to be locked. The quotes aren't necessary unless there's a space (or one of a few other odd characters) in the text you put in the command. After you type the text, press <return>. You'll be prompted for your administrative password.
If the culprit turns out to be Finder, try clicking on the Finder icon on the Dock while you hold down an "option" key, then choose "Relaunch".
how can I find out if some process is accessing the Time Capsule hard drive, keeping it busy and making the transfers slow?
That's a little harder. You could launch Activity Monitor and click on the "Network" tab in the lower part of the window. I'd also check the quality of the signal to the Time Capsule
If you have an Apple AirPort base station, I'd use the advice in this thread to investigate the signal and noise levels that each Mac sees, as described in this thread:

• High speed DSL is very slow

Hi I am barely getting dailup speeds (Verizon speed tests 74k download and 14k upload) on my HS DSL. I've put up with slow speeds for a while but I just can not put up with it any longer. If things do not improve soon I will be forced to go to cable. Youtube is unwatchable, downloads take forever.  I am using a westell 327 modem.  Any ideas on how to get the promised bandwidth would be apprecated.
jim s

Step one: Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace)  might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Remove that line. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.
Step two: Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?
Which means
Visit http://192.168.1.1/ for me and do the following:
a) If you see a Blue and White Westell page, mouse over Troubleshooting, go to DSL, and choose Transceiver Statistics. Copy and paste the information on that page.
b) If using the Red and Black Firmware: Go to System Monitoring > Advanced Monitors > Transceiver Statistics. Copy and paste the information on that page.
c) Try visiting http://192.168.1.1/transtat.htm which is a direct link to the Stats on older modems.
d) If you need a Username and Password, try the following:
admin/password
admin/password1
admin/admin
admin/admin1
admin/Serial Number.
By Serial Number, I don't mean type in the words Serial Number. I mean find and type in the serial number found on the bottom of this router.

• Occasionally VERY SLOW?

Occasionally, everything on my mac slows down to a crawl. Regardless of what app I'm working in, how many apps are open. I've checked the Monitor Activity Utility, and it appears there is plenty of CPU %, memory, and HD space available.
Do you think I might've installed a virus or something hidden that is doing this?

A 250GB drive with 235GB formatted capacity at 50%? maybe have more to do with drive characteristics and performance, but a good drive at 50% should be okay, IF you maintain and do some housecleaning and even regular backups and restores.
Yes a larger drive puts off the inevitable. The Quad G5 would do nicely with 10K 150GB Raptor and yes they work 100% w/o issues.
You would be better to move everything else except the OS and applications to another drive.
I've always get "home" on a 2nd drive, always as RAID. Putting applications there or on a 3rd drive volume never helped. And yes you could link (too messy) or use symbolic link. Leave them and find another solution.
The WD RE2 500GB would be one choice for boot drive in 7.2K format. Or the WD Caviar SE16 in either 500GB ($145 or less) or Hitachi 500GB. Maxtor MaxLine Pro maybe.
It is amazing what SuperDuper and backup and restore will do. But, I never have liked mid-size and I keep going back to 10K Raptors. A pair in stripped RAID is what I use now, and just to insure optimum, the outer half only are used in stripe for booting.

• Good speed from exchange, VERY slow at home

I've been getting a very poor speed since about thursday last week, I've run the speed test and get 24.4MB/s from the exchange, yet from my hub I'm only getting 0.65MB/s, bt say they've fixed a problem in my area on one page, then tell me there's a problem on another, I use a wired connection, so there shouldn't be anything stopping me from getting my full speed, is there actually a problem in the Bridgwater area/01278 area code? If not how can I fix this?
Thanks

• Importing digital video is very slow

Hi, I just bought a new Canon HF R40 camcorder and I am finding a few problems.  I've tried editing in iMovie 09 (iLife09) not sure if that's  and the program doesn't recognize the camera at all.  With the old iMovie program, I would just turn on the video camera and vio la...it recognzied it no problem.  This has left me with transferring movie clips directly from the SD card which seems painfully slow.  Now I was able to put together a short video with iMovie 09 but was unable to use any titles because the program would crash once I pressed the icon for Titles.  BTW I was taping in MP4 formate for the purpose of getting it on youtube.
So my questions are:
1.  Is editing from digital video vs DV tape slower in general?  At this rate I ask why anyone would find any pleasure in editing with digital video.
2.  Is this because I'm transferring from an SD card vs directly from the camera?
3.  Is iMovie 11 better at handling digital video?
4.  Does anyone know why the program is crashing when using trying to use titles?
I really appreciate any advice with this problem.  I figured it was time to upgrade into a new camcorder but it sure seems that DV Tapes are much easier to work with and I'm on the verge of just returning the camera.
Thanks,
Orlando

• ITunes speed download is very slow

I have a 2.13 GB download of real steel from iTunes store SD.
The download speed is average 2.0 MB per second
The Comcast Internet high-speed test is 11 MB per second during download but 22 MB per second with nothing downloading.
So how do I increase my 2.0 MB per second Internet connection with iTunes.apple.com to 11 MB per second?

Additional comments of hardware specifications:
Mac Mini second-generation Standard configuration of $799
(I'm guessing a fourth-generation will not solve the problem)
LAN connection to Comcast high-speed Internet triple play $119

• How to speed up a very slow query creating HTML commands

Hi, I’m generating HTML code that I will later send via dbmail (@body_format ='HTML'). There are about 11K records in the table and it takes over 9 hours to run. Any suggestions on how to increase throughput? or am I just stuck with it
declare @html_3 varchar (max) = ' '

from ##PronoDetailRpt
print @html_3

If you have only 11K records, and if what you posted is the entire query, it should take nowhere near 9 hours to complete, even on a wimpy server. It might be that some other process is blocking your global temporary table.
Look at the process that is populating the
##PronoDetailRpttable. Is that running simultaneously as you are trying to run this query?
Try selecting a single record from the table. Does that complete in a short time? i.e., run SELECT TOP (1) * FROM ##PronoDetailRpt;
Run sp_who2 in a separate window while this query is running to see if there is anything blocking this
query. There is a BlkBy column that will give you this information.
EDIT: By the way, always specify a length for VARCHAR.  So instead of CAST (RegionID AS VARCHAR) use something like CAST (RegionID AS VARCHAR(32)) where the length is larger than the longest string you expect, or if you don't know how long it
could be, use CAST (RegionID AS VARCHAR(MAX))

It seems that something went very wrong starting with the 8.0.3 update, there are numerous threads about this. Make sure to report this to Apple via http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html
