Importing star ratings from Canon's ImageBrowser

Does anyone know how to import star ratings assigned to photos
using Canon's ImageBrowser (5.8.0.10) software into Aperture?
I've tried importing a few photos with various ratings into Aperture 2.1 trial
but they appear unrated in Aperture. (Neither iPhoto nor Adobe Bridge
recognized the ratings either.)
I've done some investigation, comparing copies of the same image
with different star settings, and it appears ImageBrowser is recording
its rating in a 'WheR' resource in the resource fork of the image file.
Thanks

I started using ImageBrowser in 2001 (probably under OS 8.5), was underwhelmed with iPhoto's stability when it was introduced, so since I recently got a new Intel mac, I decided to investigate migrating my library of 20K photos to Aperture.

  • Importing star ratings from PC

    Hello,
I have a "legacy" problem that goes all the way to 1999: on my PC I used to create a subfolder with the "selected" pictures from a given event (selected to be printed or posted on my website). I did that before the age of Picasa, where stars or flags can do that for you, and I kept doing it until today.
Now I want to import my whole library, and retain my selections. When I import my library in iPhoto, it simply merges the folder in a single event.
Is there a way to star or flag these pictures (either on my PC, in the Finder or in iPhoto), so I can keep my selection by event ?
    Many thanks !
    Lili

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
When I import my library in iPhoto, it simply merges the folder in a single event.
By library do you mean your set of folders and subfolders? If your photos are in multiple folders, ie folder with subfolders, when you import them into iPhoto each folder will be imported as a separate Event. The subfolders will not be linked to its original container folder. You can do that later by creating virtual folders in iPhoto and adding albums to them as seen here. However you would have to create an album for each even by dragging the Event onto the Album heading in the left hand pane. Then you can add it to a folder. Folders can only contain albums, slideshows, calendars, etc. but not photos. Album can contain only photos.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Lightroom isn't importing Star Ratings any more.

We run Lightroom 5.7 on five PCs in our office. Recently one of the instances of the program has stopped importing star ratings entirely. I uninstalled Lightroom on that machine and reinstalled it, and was confused to see that all of our imports and settings from before the uninstall were still there. I expected that a reinstall would wipe the library and settings, but this didn't happen. This reinstall didn't do anything to LR's missing star ratings. Our import dialog is set to import embedded and sidecar metadata, so that's not the issue.
To summarize our workflow: we shoot RAW, star rate in a program called FastPictureViewer, import to LR, perform edits, and export jpegs. This workflow is the same on all machines we use, and settings are consistent across the machines. We've tested an import using a folder of images that is star-rated on a different machine, and the ratings come in with no issue.
What could be causing Lightroom to fail to import XMP star-rating data for this one machine?

Why would Lightroom be writing metadata changes, when it's supposed to be importing the metadata as-is, and no in-program changes have been made to the images yet?
Most likely there is some metadata field that actually gets set or changed during import for a legitimate reason.  You could find out which fields by saving away a copy of the .xmp sidecar before you do the import, then do the import, wait, and then compare the modified .xmp sidecar with the original.  (Or upload the two .xmp sidecars to Dropbox and post their links here, and I'll do the compare.)

Hi this is my first post on this site.
I am having trouble trying to import video files from Canon Vixia hfs10 to imovie'11. The computer does not even recognize this camcorder. When I do a PC connection, iphoto comes up, but all it tells me to import are the pictures that I have taken.

When I try to import it on imovie, I only get an option for facetime camera and not my vixia.

  • Recover star ratings from old XML database?

Is there a way to recover the star-ratings of my music from an old iTunes XML database file?

    Hi there,
I copied the whole entire iTunes folder into my music directory on my new mac (as I had my own account on his mac), and then once that was done I dragged and dropped this folder onto my iTunes icon.
It's imported playlists, but not star ratings.
Is there something I should have done before exporting my music onto my hardrive in the first place? I've read somewhere about exporting ratings or exporting playlists or something....
    Cheers,

  • Star Ratings -- From data source

    Hi,
I have imported a data source to my page and it includes a number which I'd like to convert to stars (graphics). Is there a simple script that I can use to take the number being imported and convert it to a graphic? If the rating is a 2 I'd like to have two stars, etc ...
    Thanks!

You could probably go 3 ways. Run a script after the merge, this would be the best.
For each page, get the number/integer of the star rating from the text box. Then have the script draw X number of image frames on the page where ever the rating needs to be, like 3 or 4 small square boxes. You'd have to manually determine the placement of box 1, box 2 etc. Then place a star graphic in each box.
Or you could also have the stars drawn as a polygon shape directly in InDesign, drawn as many times as needed.
Or draw just one box, long rectangle, and then have 5 images of star ratings, 1 star, 2 star etc. Based on the number, place the file name that begins with that number (ie "1-star.jpg").

  • Media Encoder won't import MXF files from Canon XF100

I'm running Media Encoder CC on two laptops: a macbook pro and a macbook air. Both systems are running the most recent version of Media Encoder CC (including updates) but only one will import MXF files from a Canon XF100? The macbook air imports and encodes the files without issue, however the macbook pro won't import the same MXF files and kicks the following error:
The file /Users/.../.../.../AA0106.MXF could not be imported. Could not read from source. Please check the settings and try again.
I could understand if both computers errored but using the same file, one will import and the other will not. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just try this and see if it will work for you.
Open iPhoto > Preferences > General and deselect 'Connecting camera opens: iPhoto'.
Change it to 'No Application' and close iPhoto.
Now connect your camera to your computer and turn it on or better still use a card reader.
If iMovie tries to open, close it.
Your camera/card should now appear as an external drive.
Copy/paste your video files into a new folder on your desktop.
    Eject and disconnect your camera/card.
Now open iMovie and go File > Import > Movies... and navigate to that folder.
    Z.

  • Aperture 3.0 not importing RAW files from Canon T1i

I have recently upgraded to Aperture 3.0. I shoot with Canon T1i in RAW+JPG file size. When importing files from Canon T1i for the first time to Aperture 3.0, I found that all files imported as jpg not RAW. How do I get the RAW files? Help!!!
    Anjali

It does support Canon T1i RAW mode. In the "Import Settings", there's a section for "RAW+JPEG Pairs". If you don't see this, click the "Import Settings" pulldown menu and select it.
In the "RAW+JPEG Pairs" section, there's a pulldown menu to allow you to select "Both (RAW as Master)"
It'll use the JPEG as the "Preview" image, but it will use the RAW as the master for all adjustments you want to perform.
Prior to the import, you should see both the JPEG and RAW (.CR2) files. AFTER the import, you should only see the RAW in your project (it has the JPEG... but it wont normally display it because it knows the RAW is the master.) After the import, select any photo in your project, then click the "metadata" tab on the left. At the top it should give you the camera, lens, exposure info, etc. and you should see the "RAW" icon.

  • Can't import RAW files from Canon Powershot S50.

iPhoto6 will not import RAW files from my Canon Powershot S50. It says the files are "unreadable". Image capture will import to the desktop, but neither iPhoto nor Photoshop Elements can open the file. I checked and the S50 is supposed to be compatible with OSX and RAW files.

I agree but I was responding to someone with an S50. That's hardly an "advanced amateur" camera. iPhoto has some rather neat catalog features but the editing is purely for the snapshooter. Heck, I suspect that redeye removal is the most popular feature and, as far as I'm concerned, if you have redeye to begin with, you're a snapshooter.
I'm an extremely advanced amateur with my film setup but, because of cost, I'm still a snapshooter with my digital camera. My film setup is two Nikon N80s with a top-of-the-line Nikon flash head that I use only with a Stroboframe bracket. The bracket and the necessary extension cord cost me nearly $200! My lenses are pure Nikon, including a single focal length f/1.8, 85 mm. portrait lens.
I consider 10 MP to be the bare minimum for "advanced amateur" shooting and both Canon and Nikon have recently introduced 10MP SLRs in the $1000 range. However, I'm waiting for the next advance - an SLR without the reflex mechanism - interchangeable lenses and an FP shutter but no mirror! Let's face it, the reflex mechanism adds cost but a digital screen gives the same view and even better (you can see the color balance) and screens are now available that can be viewed in bright sunlight.
I'm also hoping for one thing that will probably never happen - physically larger CCDs so that I can get the same focus control (small depth of field) that I can get with my film camera.

  • Importing song ratings from Music Match.

    I am new to iTunes.
I am trying to switch from Music Match to iTunes in preparation for buying my 1st iPod (Nano). It seems that my song ratings from MMJB do not transfer into iTunes. Should these ratings transfer and I am just doing something wrong?
If not, any suggestions on how to best accomplish this task? I am thinking grouping songs by rating in MMJB, either in playlists or by moving each rating to a different folder on disk; then importing into iTunes songs of each rating separately. Hopefully in iTunes there is a way to rate a group of songs all together, rather than having to mark each one individually.

The playlist idea is probably the best one. Export your playlists (5 of them, one for each rating), import them, select all the playlist contents in iTunes, right click the selection, set the rating to whatever.

  • Imported Star Ratings

In Aperture, when I import images that have been previously meta-annoted in iView, the star ratings do not show up (that column is empty in list and thumb views), although all my other iptc stuff is there.
The stars DO show up in LightRoom, but not in Aperture. Is this a known thing and is there a tip for it?

Well, you forced me to go through the old iView manuals. Turns out it IS an XMP thing that allows Lightroom and Bridge to see stars:
    *iView 3x manual*
    Ratings as annotations (pg 64)
+Ratings in MediaPro are mapped to Adobe’s XMP standard for ratings. When annotations for images in a catalog are synchronized (written) to the original files, all ratings will be written into the files. If you open the image in Adobe Bridge, the star ratings will be displayed. Likewise, if you have assigned a rating to a file in Bridge, the rating will be displayed when you import that file into a MediaPro catalog.+
    *iView 3x manual*
    +iView / IPTC / QT / XMP / Aperture chart (pg 147)+
Color labels no longer mentioned. No mention of ratings, but they do specifically list Aperture's equivalents.
    As for my Urgency memory:
    *iView 2x manual*
    +iView / IPTC / QT / Photoshop CS (pg 90)+
"color labels" are listed with "urgency" here (and Urgency in the big IPTC list is indeed empty). Ratings are not listed
So I guess for coprporate reasons Apple does not support the was XMP sees some stuff. If it's just the stars, that's workable, as Steve said. I just wonder what other annotations I haven't noticed yet...
