Importing stills from iPhoto, getting correct order.

In Tom's manual page 217 it says "sequentially number the stills…"  Where do I do this?  I don't think it is the title field (replacing the image#) as that was not followed by the images in the timeline when I tried it.  Is the order in the timeline based on the sequence of photos in the iPhoto album?  What is the right way to get the order correct before importing the album into FCE please?  Keith

Apple uses an alpha numeric sorting order like this:
001.jpg
002.jpg
003.jpg ... and so on.
You need to add leading zeros to the file name, or just use leters only for an alpha sort.

  • Importing stills from iPhoto - terrible resolution?

I'm a complete novice.  I have tried searching on this and have not found any suitable information for this problem.  I have become tired of the instability of iMovie, and just downloaded the trial version  of FCP X.  I've starting tinkering with it and have noticed that when I bring stills in from iPhoto to the FCP timeline, the resolution is drastically lower than what I see in iMovie.  Low enough that I really cannot use the pics because they look awful.
Here is what I am doing (and not doing, as the case may be):
Open FCP, click on the camera button in the center-right toolbar (similar toolbar in iMovie), find the still I want from an event in iPhoto, and drag it into the FCP timeline.  FCP opens a window stating it does not recognise the video format and gives me a choice of sizes to use.  It seems that no matter what I choose, the resolution is bad.  Now, when I do the same exact thing in iMovie, it does not give me a window about video format and the resolution is not bad (adequate, anyway, for what I am doing) - far better than what I see in FCP.
So, what am I doing wrong?  I know FCP is supposed to be the premier NLE software (certainly a cut above iMovie), and so I am convinced that the problem is simply that I don't know what I'm doing.
    Thanks for your help.

OK, so I must confess to being an idiot.  On second shot, it appears FCP not only imports the stills as well as iMovie, but the quality is significantly better, not worse.
Here's what happened - I imported an entire project into FCP from iMovie, which turned out somewhat disasterous.  The quality of the stills and vid is not good, and the Ken Burns and transitions did not import well.  Then I began piecing the project back together from scratch in FCP, and became confused which project was the import and which was from scratch, and I thought I was positive I had it right.  In any case, importing projects from iMovie does not seem to go well.  Is this typical or is it more likely that I messed that up to?
Just for completeness - the new project (from scratch) is set up as follows: 1080p, 1920x1080, 23.98p (this is the format of the video the timeline will see).  The stills are mostly 3089x2048 jpeg files (digitized film photos).
So, the question has become two fold in my learnings here:
1 - any tips or tricks on importing an iMovie project into FCP for the best results?
2 - any general rules of thumb to follow when bringing stills into the FCP timeline for best resolution?  This is working fine, as stated above, but the higher the quality the better my completed project will go over.
    Thanks much!

  • Portrait-mode images from iPhoto get imported unrotated as landscape

    hi there
when i imported my iphoto library i noticed that portrait-mode (upright) images from iPhoto get imported unrotated as landscape.
if i had edited them in iPhoto i get in aperture a stack with the original wrongly in landscape and the edited one correctly upright.
seems to be the case that aperture does not handle the EXIF orientation tag properly.
anybody an idea what i can do?
    thanks, olli

So, iPhoto *does not* respect the Exif tag, just like I said. When it imports a photo so tagged it creates a new version and that's what you are seeing - tagged iPhoto Edited. The Original file (including the Exif rotation instructions) is not actually touched - non-rotated.
    This is by design.
Apps like iPhoto and Aperture don't respect these tags because of the apps that integrate with them. If, for instance, you pulled a Rotate-Tagged image from your Library to a Pages document then the result would be the wrong way round in Pages, as it, and most other applications, are not aware of Exif display tags.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • IMovie not importing videos from iPhoto

I am trying to import videos from iPhoto into iMovie. It is not bringing in ( i.e. creating thumbnails for) anything after Dec 2010. The videos all show up in iPhoto and they were shot with an iPhone. Is there a date range set somewhere that I need to change. I can not even get them if I specifically try and import them one at a time through File-Import-Movies. When I try this method it lets me select the videos, but they still don't show up in my video thumbnails. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!
    Other info:
    OSX 10.8.3 on a 2012 iMac
    iMovie 11 9.0.8

I open up iMovie and it then imports movies from iPhoto. The problem is it is missing several videos. When I select import video it imports those missing files, so I know it's not a file format issue... Anyone else seen this? Any suggestions on how to get ALL my videos into iMovie?
iPhoto will import any file that can be played in the QT Player (i.e., that is "playback" compatible). On the other hand, iMovie '08 will only import files that it can edit -- i.e. that are "edit" compatible. (Would you really want to waste your time importing files only to find that you can't do anything with them once they are "in" the application?) Your solution is to convert non-edit compatible files to compression formats that are editable -- primarily DV, AIC, M-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, MPEG-4, or H.264. You should also note that both audio and video content must be edit compatible. For instance, many AVI files contain M-JPEG video which can be edited along with ADPCM audio which cannot be edited and so such files will not import.

  • Imovie 09 How do I stop Imovie from auto importing video from iphoto

Imovie 09 How do I stop Imovie from auto importing video from iphoto.
Hi I've done a lot of searches on how to do this but no answers found.
Imovie is beginning to become really slow because of the large number of video's. It takes 3 minutes to startup. Editing is sometimes slow lot's of spinning beach balls e.t.c.
I would like to only import the video I want to edit and hopefully get a quicker Imovie in the process.
My Iphoto library is about 95 Gbyte in size.
My mac has 4 gb ram and I use the internal disk.
Any other ways to work with Imovie/Iphoto are also welcome.
    regards

I won't get iMovie 9 till Tuesday, but based on what you said I may need to take some precautions. One reason I didn't like iMovie 8 is because it automatically imported everything in iPhoto library. What I'm going to do is create a new iPhoto library before importing the photos/videos from the camera. Or if you already have it in your main iPhoto library copy only the photos you'll use in your iMovie 9 project to the new library. Then start iPhoto while pressing the option key which will allow you to select the new iPhoto library you have created. Then I suppose that when you start iMovie 9 it will automatically import only the photos/videos from the new library.

  • I attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded, now computer freezes after trying to load everything.  possible to reverse this?  options?  restore hd from time machine?  pls help!!!

long story short...i attempted to import pics from iphoto to a folder on my desktop but somehow clicked desktop so 45,000 pics loaded to my desktop and now my computer freezes up after trying to load everything, and i'm not able to just drag the photos into the folder.  is it possible to reverse this?  what are my options?  restore hd from time machine?
a further question to restoring my hd from a previous backup on time machine...it says it will erase the hd.  does it actually erase everything or does it just erase anything that may have been added or downloaded since that backup?  this is confusing to me.
another problem which is part of the original problem is it seems that when i connect my iphone to my computer and iphoto uploads my pics...it doesn't just upload new ones, it duplicates and uploads every picture again...which is why i have 45,000 pics...they are 40,000 duplicates!  what's up with that?
I have a macbook pro, and recently updated the os to Yosemite.  the iphoto app is out of date, but i'll worry about that once i can figure out how to get all those pics off the desktop.  also, i recently purchased and installed 8g of new ram, but that hasn't seemed to help.
    any advice would be appreciated!
    thanks!!

    thanks for replying.
the booting and walking away and then attempting to browse and clean method is what i've been trying to do.  it won't let me drag and drop and just freezes up and goes to sleep after 2 minutes.  it's a never ending battle with very few results. which is why i questioned the method of just restoring the hd from a time machine backup.
do you think restoring the hd from time machine will resolve the issue with all pics on the desktop?  and everything will be as it was from the date i restore it from?  sorry, as you can tell, i'm not overly computer savvy.
i have a really old desktop mac...i can try connecting the two...how does one boot a mac in 'target mode'?
as for the iphoto cleaning and organizing issue...that is what i was trying to accomplish with importing them to a folder.  was going to browse and clean from there...but somehow imported to desktop which is what's complicating everything.  once i get them off the desktop i can work on the iphoto issue...which as i mentioned...i didn't take 45,000 pics...i've just taken about 4,500 over the last few years, and they are being duplicated in iphoto.  this was my attempt to clean it out entirely and start over.  it will basically be a lot of deleting.
one problem, seems to lead me to more...which is just my luck.  :-)
    thanks again, for your help.

  • How to import videos from iphoto

it did it the first time i loaded imovie 08, but i cant find an option to do it again.
and thre is no info in any apply help file or the support pages, only how to import photos from iphoto.
stupid! or is it me being stupid

My iphoto video formats are the kind that my DMC Panasonic Still camer Shoots.
That doesn't really help, try opening them in QT/inspector and seeing what video and audio compression is used.
My point is, they are the same format as the ones that were imported 3 days ago.
Are you sure, your camera may be capable of taking more than one type of video, does im08 still recognise the video from 3 days ago
Is there a manual way to udate the iMovie video library from iPhoto when new videos are added to iPhoto?
Have you tried dragging the video from iphoto to the desktop and then in im08 using file/import movies

  • Importing photos from iphoto to iphone

I have the 'old' version of the iphone and cannot transfer photos from iphoto to the iphone. When i click on the photos tab for the iphone in itunes, the albums and everything except "sync photos from" at the very top are grayed out. Then my only option is to import everything from iphoto onto the iphone, which i do not want to do.
So -- how do I import only certain folders from iphoto onto the phone? How do i get the options below to not be grayed out?
Thanks for any help anyone can give me!

    newuser1969,
Did you try to rebuild the photo library?
You can find out if the issue is caused by the iPhoto library by testing with an alternate library. Just launch iPhoto while holding Option as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229 Then import a few photos and open iTunes.
If the issue only happens with your main library, it probably needs to be rebuilt using the article I linked in my first response.
If iTunes does not see the alternate iPhoto library, you may want to uninstall and reinstall iTunes as described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1224

  • How can I import images from iphoto with the albums and folders?

How can I import images from iphoto without losing the albums and folders I already created?

In Organizer, you can choose File>get Photos and Videos>From iPhoto.
Importing from iPhoto'09: If in iPhoto, you organize your media using photo references, that is, the media actually does not reside inside iPhoto library package, and are referenced through original locations, Organizer does not create new copies of those media and just refer to the original location. but if your iPhoto media reside inside iPhoto library, Organizer creates a copy all media in your pictures folder, also imports albums and tags and other metadata.
Importing from iPhoto'011: In this case, Organizer always creates a copy of your photos in your pictures folder which resides inside iPohto package. It does not import the albums and other metadata like star rating, caption etc.
    Hope this information helps!

Can anyone tell me how to merge my iPhoto Library into my Photos System Library or how to import photos from iPhoto to Photos?

How many did you trash at one go? iPhoto will baulk and possibly corrupt if you try trash too many at one go. Expereinced users recommend getting rid of them in batches of about 100 or so.
What's your plan for the remaining images in the iPhoto Library (the 2k photos and 4 videos)?

  • When trying to import photos from iPhoto organizer 12 crashes

I installed new photoshop elements 12 and when It attempted to import photos from iphoto 9.5.1 it get to the 7th picture and then locks up, I have to force quit app. What can the problem be? I tried importing a few photos and it worked ok, I attempted to import using files and folders and it locked up again.

You're sure you want to stop using iphoto? Then I would try it this way instead:
Export each event in your iphoto library separately, put the photos where you want to keep them and use "from files and folders". If there's an event that the organizer chokes on, then you'll have to go into that one photo by photo to see where the problem lies. (You are aware that using "from iphoto" is duplicating your entire iphoto library, so you don't want to do that AND keep using iphoto, right?)
