Importing Tags from Vista

I'm importing picture files (mostly Canon CR2 files, but some JPEGs) into Elements 7 under Windows Vista. I have a comprehensive set of Vista file tags which I was expecting PSE to import. However, PSE only seems to import tags associated with JPEGs and seems to fail to see tags associated with CR2's. Is this right?
How can I import the tags I've already built rather than re-build in PSE from scratch?
If I subsequently add a file tag in Vista, to an existing (picture file) which is already in the PSE catalog, how do I 'bring' this new tag into PSE?
THanks

I'm using Windows Photo Gallery, and Canon's RAW codec 1.5. Is the codec from the Microsoft Link you posted written by Microsoft, or is it a posting of one of Canon's?
The links on that page are to the codec written by the camera manufacturers.
I just updated my Canon codec to 1.5, and it appears that Windows Live Photo Gallery still isn't able to use it to write metadata to CR2 files. This problem was posted by the WLPG developers on a Microsoft blog after version 1.3 came out, and it apparently hasn't been fixed.   User reviews of the codec on Canon's site suggests that many some savvy users are encountering problems with it.
This suggests that you may be better off using another program, such as PSE, to tag your raw photos (though PSE itself has numerous problems with metadata in general, and raw metadata in particular).  As Paige indicated, though, you need to choose one program and use it exclusively.  Both PSE and WLPG use databases internally to store the "truth" about the metadata, and the programs use different (imperfect) policies for writing back that information from the database into photos' metadata.
By the way, if you continue with Windows Photo Gallery, you might consider updating to Windows Live Photo Gallery, which supersedes the built-in Windows Photo Gallery (classic Microsoft naming confusion).

  • Import tags from another catalogue without develop settings

How do I import tags from another catalogue but not the develop settings of each image?
    Here's whats going on:
I started with 5000 images on a hard drive. I gave a copy to someone else working on the project.
I physically moved images into real folders and edited all the shots.
She left all the images where they originally were and tagged each image.
I want to combine her tags with the edits that I've done, with the images in their new locations I've made.
I have a copy of her catalogue file.
I tried importing her catalogue into mine- which will pull her metadata tags, but only also with pulling her develop settings which resets all my work.
How can I import ONLY her metadata tags?
I can't open her catalogue and write the tags into XML sidecars because I've moved the images from where her catalogue says they are.
I realize we should have done this differently from the beginning, but with that being said- if I could import only her metadata tags then that should work. But Lightroom 4 only gives the options of importing BOTH metadata and develop settings.
    Any ideas?

One option (backup your catalog first):
    * Import her catalog (apply metadata and develop changes), which adds a "Paste Settings" step to the edit history.
    * Restore previous develop settings using ScrewAutoSync, to roll back the settings by one step, to pre-"Paste Settings" state. - just make sure you *don't* do this to photos that weren't changed by the catalog import. One way to do that is to apply a no-op (do nothing) preset to all photos before importing the catalog (that way if you inadvertently roll 'em back one, they'll be the same as they were). You must create a no-op preset by hand, or use this:
    http://www.robcole.com/LrForumSupport/Clear Edit History.lrtemplate
(hint: context-click & select "save link as")
    There are probably other options.

  • How to quick import Tags from a xml file?

    Good morning/afternoon/night everyone.
I have this client that want me to import something like 1000 tags from a xml file in CQ5.5. I know I can do it programatically and in dev.day.com I have already found some instructions, but, there is some easier way to do this? Or, if the only way is developing a bundle to run in a workflow (and then the client can import tags from xml files anytime he want to), do you guys have some advice or guidelines?
    Thanks!

I would expect it should be possible using vault. If you export an existing namespace from cq using vault (checkout/update) you can see what format it should be in. Then you should convert your xml to match that format (perhaps using XSLT) and use vault in the other direction (commit).
We are using vault all the time behind the scenes using a vault plugin for maven. This way we can export content from one developer's cq instance, put it in SVN and have another developer import it in his cq instance, all using maven (and vault). This is especially usefull for general content structures and for tags.

  • Will photoshop elements 12 import tags from photoshop elements 5

will photoshop elements 12 import tags from photoshop elements 5?

    See:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/backup-restore-move-catalog-photoshop.html
I suppose you are using the organizer : you'll be able to recover your PSE5 catalogs either by a catalog conversion on the same computer or by the backup / restore process.

  • Import Tags from Serif Album Plus

How do I import tags from another programme ie. Serif Album Plus?

    Hi Rave,
Sorry, new to this.I have a trial download of Elements 11, on a pc running Win 7 Pro 64bit  Don't like the layout of elements 11 as much as my old Photoshop Album 2 most of the writing on screen is too small for me to read and I can find no way of altering this. In Serif, I have several main headings, some of which are sub-divided into other tagged catagories. I hoped to transfer all this info to save having to re tag all my collection.

  • Importing tags from Photoshop Album to Photoshop Elements 5

I have had Photoshop Album 2.0.2 for several years and it currently holds the information of 13000+ tagged items. I have a detailed tagging system set up which I don't want to lose.  I also have Photoshop Elements 5 and having just discovered that Photoshop Album is now discontinued I wanted to transfer my existing information into Elements.
I have spent some time trying varies options but cannot find the solution I want.
If I select a photo from file to import into Elements then the tagging information does not come with it.
If I export an image from Album to desktop and then import it into Elements no tags come with it.
If I email a photo from Album to myself then import that image it does come with the tags into Elements.
Obviously I can't email all 13000 images to myself to import them but can someone suggest how I can transfer this data - obviously the photos themselves don't need to move as both programmes only keep a link to the original location to the photos.
I'm not interested in using the online storage system but wonder if one solution might be to upload all my phots to that temporarily then reimport them to Elements.
Additionally is it possible to import my current tag structure  rather than have imported tags all appearing under a 'imported tags' tag.
    Any help grately appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gill

Thank you so much it worked - the only thing that didn't transfer was the folder pics I'd chosen for the tags so that didn't take long to redo - many thanks - I'd never have found that. It would have been so much more obvious if it showed 'open' or 'select catalogue' rather than just the word 'catalogue' with no other options visible from the dropdown menu.
    Happy Bunny here!

  • Howcan I import tags from PSE 10 into PSE 12?

I've got the albums in PSE 12 but I have much organizational information in the PSE 10 Keyword tags and don't know how to import them.  Thanks in advance.  Phil Young

    Hi,
If you simply want the list of tags without any association to media, you can try this:
Go to PSE10 catalog,Click on the drop down available adjacent to + button in keyword tags and Select Save Keyword Tags to File
Specify the destination where you want the file to be saved.
Now come back to EO12, open the drop down list available with keyword tags and click on Import Keyword tags from file.
Choose the file you saved earlier and import it.
The tags should be imported now. But please note, assosciation with media will not be there.
If you want assosciation as well, you need to convert the catalog in PSE12.
    Thanks,

  • LR not importing tags from Elements 5.0

I'm trying to import a (rather large) Photoshop Elements 5 catalog into Lightroom--about 32000 images, mostly Canon raw files (some .RAW from a 10D, some .CR2 from a 20D). I'm finding that Lightroom isn't importing any of the PSE tags on any of the raw files. I tried using "File > Write Tags to Files" in PSE, but that only seemed to help with tags on JPGs, not on raw files.
The LR documentation says that tags created under the default categories in PSE (e.g. "People") would be imported, but not even those were being imported for the raw files.
(I did run a "File > Recover" on the PSE side before importing into LR; the first time I tried into LR it crashed after the import even though I had run a Recover, but the second time it was successful. It didn't get the RAW tags either time, though.)
Is there something else I should try to get this to work?
    Thanks,
    nj

    Paige,
Thanks for the help. I would like to make it simple but my current PC has all images in the XP "my pictures" folder as the root which of course is on C: and has a long user path. Multiple folders under that.
I really want my images on a separate hard drive on the new PC which would be D. I guess I could setup the original path on C on the new PC (since it is Vista it would be totally made up), copy them there, then MOVE them to D via LR, etc. etc. However I was hoping to keep my system file dates as is so that would change them all.
Your PSE backup and restore is an option. Although quite frankly I have not had much luck with that backup option running through to completion with most versions of PSE that I have had.
I guess the comment about version sets and stacks appearing next to each other is true. Although sorting through 1,000's to re-marry them does not appeal to me. It looks like the "auto-stack by capture time" might do a nice job of stacking original images with their edits.
I thought of perhaps installing Lightroom on the old PC, importing the catalog. THEN taking the LR catalog to the new PC. Sticking the images where I want them, and THEN hopefully LR would do a "re-connect"?? I wish LR would try to do a re-connect during the import of the PSE catalog. That would make projects like this MUCH easier.

  • Import tags from elements 8

I saw that I had most of my tags still in Elements 8. Is it possible to import them to Lightroom 3? I have all the keywords and pictures already in Lightroom 3.

I thought that "Tags" in PSE are nothing else than keywords. So if you already have your pictures and keywords in LR, what are you missing?
    dj_paige wrote:
    You don't import the photos.
You convert/upgrade the PSE8 catalog to Lightroom.

If the pictures already are in LR, converting the PSE catalog is probably not what you want to do anymore.

  • PSE 13 "Import Keyword Tags From File" Fails

Whenever I try to do the above command, it fails. As shown in the attached figure it gets to 9%. Does anyone have any ideas on how to troubleshoot this error?
    Thanks in advance.

is there a way to import tags from PSE 12
The PSE 12 Organizer and LR 5 use different file formats for exporting and importing keyword hierarchies. PSE uses XML format, while LR 5 uses a tab-separated format.  If you're a programmer or technically minded, you could convert from one to the other using your favorite scripting language.
But the approach suggested by dj_paige can be modified to accomplish what you want without scripting, by copying the keyword hierarchy from the "upgraded" LR catalog that was created from your PSE catalog to your "good" LR catalog:
    1. Make a manual backup of your "good" LR catalog: Lightroom Help | Back up a catalog.
    2. In LR, open the catalog that you created previously by upgrading (converting) the PSE catalog -- you can usually get to that catalog by doing File > Open Recent.
    3. Go to grid view in the Library by doing Window > Library followed by View > Grid (usually you're already in Library grid view, but just in case...)
    4. Make sure the Keyword List panel is showing on the right by doing Window > Panels > Keyword List.
    5. You should see the keyword hierarchy from your PSE catalog.  If you don't, stop and post a screen shot of the entire LR screen.
    6. Do Metadata > Export Keywords to export those keywords as a LR-format text file.
    7. Open your "good" LR catalog by doing File > Open Recent.
    8. Do Metadata > Import Keywords and select the file you exported in step 6.
    9. All the keywords that were exported in step 6 will be added to the current catalog, and there will be duplicate keywords if there were already keywords of the same name in the catalog.  Those new keywords will not be attached to any existing photos in the current catalog.

I have just downloaded PS and LR5 from Adobe CC. I was using Photoshop Elements 12. How can I import my keyword tags from the PSE Organizer. I saved them as .txt files but they will not import because they contain "special characters." What do I do?  Please do not tell me I have to start over... ~

  • How do I have catalog on an external drive and update tags from multiple computers?

I have catalog on an external drive but the tags are on the computer. Is there any way that tags can be placed on the external drive so that other computers can access and update?

In case its just the tags that you want to have in one catalog that is easy. From multiple computers save the tags to the xml file.Copy the xml file to the external drive where the catalog resides. From there you can import the tags into the catalog.
Command for exporting tags ->Save tags to file in the tags panel of the application
    Command for importing tags->From file

  • Deleting imported tags--does that apply across all catalogs?

I'm building a brand-new catalog in Elements Organizer 12.  My first attempt turned into a hot mess with broken links, etc (I started it before I really figured out how Organizer works).
Organizer is listing a bunch of imported keyword tags on my new catalog.  They don't appear to be attached to pictures in my new catalog, but they're listed under imported tags.  As the purpose of creating the new catalog was starting from scratch, I'd like to clean up those old tags.
My question is: will deleting those tags also delete them from photos from the original (hot-mess) Organizer catalog?  I'm not ready to delete that old catalog yet, and I'd prefer to leave them attached to the photos in the old catalog for the time being.
    Thanks for any help!
    Julie

If you find the tags in the 'imported tags' category are really written to the files themselves, it would be better to move those tags from the 'imported tags' category to a more suitable category. If you deleted those imported tags from the catalog, that will not delete the tags from the files themselves, which is generally a good thing. But there will be no way to get them back in the catalog afterwards. The tags in the files are recognized only at the time of import into the catalog. If the tag is in your categories by that time, no problem. If you have no corresponding tag at the time of import, the tags are imported in the default 'imported tags' category.

  • Import People tags from Windows Live Photo Gallery

I've used Windows Live Photo Gallery for years and have over 15k images that have people tags embedded in the metadata for the files.  I recently downloaded the Photoshop Elements 13 trial and am trying to determine if the organizer that ships with it will meet my needs, however, I am not seeing a way to import People tags from my existing images.  I have imported the images, and most of the photo tags appear to have been imported, but not the people tags.  Is there any built-in way to import people tags from the file-based EXIF metadata, or an external tool or add-in that might be able to bring my WLPG People Tags into PE13?
    Thanks!

Adding a 'Me too' to bump this up. Doing the '30 day evaluation' as I'm looking to change only because MSFT has abandoned the product and I some better editing on things like 'healing/clone brush' for the picture's I scan (using the very old Digital Image Pro).   Google's Picasa has no problem recognizing them including the location of the face selection (though it does like to recognize over top of them sometimes).
I can deal with some of the amazingly frustrating clunkiness of the UI and navigation (they seriously need to hire some new usability designers) but it is a show stopper if the People aspect won't recognize existing tags from WLG and/or Picasa.

  • Importing people tags from PS Elements 11 to Lightroom 4

On first use of Lightroom 4, some people tags from PS elements 11 were not imported on the conversion, while others were.  Is there a fix for this?

I just had the same issue with installing Lightroom 5 for the first time. It spent all day converting my PSE11 catalog. The only people tags it seems to have brought over are the ones that are actually in the files, not in the PSE11 catalog. Which makes it kind of useless.
