Importing tape with timecode problems??

I've got an HDV tape that looks perfectly normal, can't see any timecode breaks, but FCP seems to think there are and captures the continuous shot into segments - missing a bit of material each time. There are no breaks I can see on the tape, and it runs fine through the camera.
Is there a way to import the tape into FCP such that FCP 'ignores' any timecode breaks?
I tried a capture on-the-run ('now') but FCP does the same thing - break the continuous shot into segments (with gaps between each segment).
All ears,
thanks,
Ben

HDV (Sony Z1U). Tape looks fine, timecode doesn't seem to have a break.
Trying to capture on the fly I'm now getting an error reading:
"Capture was aborted due to lack of incoming data."
Mmmm? And yet everything LOOKS normal and correct. I wonder if it might be the capture cable giving problems here ... ??
Any ideas along this line?

  • Advice on importing old mini dv tapes with timecode breaks

I've dug out mini DV tapes from storage which contain priceless (at least to me) family footage. Some of these tapes are close to 11 years old.
Before these tapes degrade and rot further, I'm trying to generate tape archive files on my hard drive using Final Cut Pro 10.1 from these old tapes.
The issue I'm having is with timecode breaks on some of the tapes. After a few minutes of an import, sometimes the video will go a little wonky and I'll get a timecode break and the import process aborts itself. When this happens, I'm forced to start the archive all over again from the beginning, as far as I can tell. If I get lucky, sometimes I'll get through the import after another try but other times the tape is so badly damaged that I can't get through the entire tape.
I believe there used to be a setting to tell Final Cut Pro to ignore these breaks. It now appears this setting is gone. Or am I missing something? If it's gone, is there some kind of workaround I can employ?
Otherwise, if Final Cut Pro isn't up to the task, can someone please recommend software that will help me convert my tapes to archives on my hard drive?
PS. I've used a head cleaning tape on my camera to limit the problem but it still happens with some of the tapes.

You need a DV device to be attached and recognized by your Mac.
    Open QTime X.
    File>New Movie Recording.
In the control bar click the small triangle.
A list of devices appears to record from.
Make the DV/camera selection and start capturing.
It's all manual start stop and very basic but does capture.

  • Tape with timecode

Hi all i write from italy and have a little problem, i hope someone can help me.
I need to make tape "digital betacam" with timecode offset, need the tv spots start at 10:00:00:00, i use betacam DVW-500P
    in embedded mode.
    can help me?
    Thank for you reply

I'm sure you guys are right, but I'm shocked. Made an assumption there. Also making assumptions that EBU time code works in similar ways to SMPTE, which I'm sure is wrong.
The thing that surprises me most is that I assume the Konas and Black Magics of the world (which I don't have) pass VITC as a standard procedure. And any video deck that receives VITC records it - unless those lines are blanked. And many of those decks will go the extra mile and record that same code as LTC.
Another tack... if you have timecode going out via RS-422 control, and you kindly ask the deck to record through same control, won't it send out the sequence timecode, which would be dutifully recorded on the other end?
This is interesting to me because I have wanted to get back towards time code as a project tracking and communication tool, and it seems some of what I thought I'd be doing won't be possible.
I would also have assumed that code would follow through SDI to say a DBeta...

  • How to export to DVCAM tape with timecode from Premiere CS 6?

I am having a lot of trouble with this. I need to give a dvcam tape with proper timecode to a television station for a Show I edit. I am editing for this station for last 7 years. Before they accepeted betacam, but now they changed to DVCAM. I have Premiere Pro 6 (or CC) and SONY HVR M15U deck. I connected it via firewire, then realized firewire can't export timecode. Now I am in a pickle.
    Possible solutions (may be):
    - Buy a card, send other signal like SDI to the deck?
    - Buy new deck?
Please help. I able to print to tape via firewire, but how can I print the timecode?
    Thanks

    Sure it can.

  • Import movie with timecode on screen

I need my Interpreting students to be able to import videos of their work and keep the timecodes intact. We use these timecodes to see how long they take to interpret things, and we need them to remain intact despite any later editing. We need them to be able to use a free program, as we can't require them to purchase anything.
I've searched the discussions and can't find any free option that I can point my students to.
Is there any import option, or plugin that I can download that will create a permanent timecode that appears in the movie that they create? It needs to be a part of the import process so that it is accurate to the original movie they're working from.
    Any suggestions are appreciated.
iMac Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Quick 'n dirty solution:
Set the camcorder to display the timecode on its LCD screen.
Connect the video & audio analog-out to a analog-to-dv converter (another camcorder with analog-in or a dedicated box).
Connect the a-to-dv converter via FW to iMovie and import.
Now the iMovie project has the timecode permanently burned into the video.
    Slower 'n slightly different solution:
There are iMovie plug-ins that insert a running time (min:sec:frames) to the video, but this is not exactly the same thing as above because it doesn't relate in any way to the timecode that is embedded in the original DV material or to the timecode on the tape.

  • Digitize tape with timecode breaks??

Is there a way to do this in FCP. Like start the tape playing and digitize thru the time code breaks??
    Thanks

No luck altering the On Timecode Break setting in User Preferences, from (the default) Make New Clip, to Warn After Capture?
I think that setting, couple with a Capture Now attempt, might be your best best. Log and Capturing - even if you set the whole tape as one clip - might get tripped up by the timecode break.
Or has that not worked so far?

  • Importing tape with 2 audio channels recorded?

Can iMovie 4 handle importing a mini DV tape that has 2 channels of audio. Can these 2 channels of audio be separated for editing??

That depends on what you mean. iMovie imports in stereo (which is two channels), but those can't be separated.
If you mean the extra audio channels that can be added using 12-bit audio in the camera, the answer is NO.
    NEVER use 12-bit audio:

  • Trouble Dumping to tape with Graphics

    Hey guys,
I'm having a real hard time dumping some video down to a tape and having the graphics work as well.
    Here's what I'm doing.
I've overlayed the graphic (Targa, but I've tried everything from .PSD to .TIFF) in the second track on top of some video. Everything looks perfect in the canvas window. However, on the monitor that is fed from my deck and ultimately on the tape itself, the graphics don't look nearly as good. Instead of straight lines, they seem to bend, and the text seems to bend as well. Its really strange because I even tried to place just a shell of a graphic and fill in the text with the FCP text tool. As soon as I place the text inside the graphic, it starts to distort and bend on the monitor, but it looks perfect in the canvas.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm at my wits end..
    Thanks,
    Evan

Try this. Dump to tape with the problem. Capture this material. Do you see the problem in the canvas? If not, there's a problem with your monitoring setup. You might also want to see if you're material is within broadcast spec. Turn range check on (in the view menu) to see whether the video is kosher. If not, the simplest thing to do is apply the broadcast safe filter.

  • Recovery from imported tape media fails and causes DPM management console to crash with ID: 917

    Hi.
I have a newly installed DPM 2012 R2 on a Windows 2012 R2 with a standalone dedicated SQL server which is causing me a bit of a headache right now.
I'm about to restore some files from an imported tape media, the tape is from our previous DPM server (DPM 2010). I have identified the media and cataloged it and i'm able to browse it to choose wich files to restore. But as soon as i try to
finish up a restore job it causes the console to crash.
My server is running just fine with backups and restores from i.e tapes that is backed up by this server - no problem there - but imported is not working.
Below is the message from console when it crashes.
Connection to the DPM service has been lost.
Review the application event log for information about a possible service shutdown. Verify that the following services are not disabled:

    Any ideas?

  • Timecode problems with DV-NTSC

This is too weird! I've been editing for years in FCP 5.1.4 and now all of a sudden, I'm having timecode problems when capturing DV. I've tried my dual G5 running OS 10.4.11 and my Mac Book Pro Intel dual running 10.5.6. I tried both of my cams (Sony & Canon), different tapes and firewire cables, no go. I went onto Apple's support and per their instructions removed the Library/Receipts/QT version resources, downloaded QT again, no luck. I just got through capturing and editing a HD DV with no problems, but regular DV won't work now. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Henrik

    Exactly which version of QT?

  • Timecode problems when Printing to tape HDV sequence

I have a project fully edited in HDV format and I want to make a master on tape to archive. I have done this before with no problems but now I have an odd issue. After FCP has printed to tape and I review the footage on the deck (camera is the recording device). The picture is on tape and looks fine but the timecode is not function properly. Instead of running continuously it freezes and then will skip forward some. Again the picture is there and looks fine. I have switched out the decks and the tapes and tried it 5 times but with the same results. What makes this more odd is the first hour of footage runs properly and then after that the problem starts.
I played back other projects like this that I did the same way and the timecode runs correctly. This is a very odd issue and hoping someone else has seen this before and can help. Thanks!

Try exporting the sequence as a self contained movie, then try recording that. My guts say the HDV you're working with is just not allowing your CPU to keep up with it all, and TC might be where this is showing up. But a single file playing back would make things easier on your system all round, and it's lossless. File/Export/QT movie... then check on make self contained, and leave off recompress all frames. This is lossless quality wise.
Sure it's not just dirty heads or something on your recording devices? LIkely not, but it's a shot in the dark from here.

  • VHS to DV tapes...problem with new  Sony camcorders

I had a nice Sony miniDV camcorder, the DCR HC 30. Worked great to record almost all of my VHS tapes to DV, which I am using to created my iMovies. The camcorder worked fine in this mode. It then had a problem with regular recording, capturing the audio, but not video. Known problem to Sony, who repaired the camcorder at no cost. It worked great again, but the last time I went to record from my VHS tape, it worked for an hour, and then the touch-screen menu failed to respond to touch. (Another story).
I also have a newer Sony camcorder, the DCR HC 26. Connected it to the VCR to record from the VHS tape. I then discovered that this camcorder will allow recording FROM the camcorder TO the VCR with the AV connector, but if I want to record FROM the VCR, it will only work using the DV connector into an iLink port (Firewire).
I went to the 'Sony Style' store (yes,Palo Alto has everything!) and the guy first insisted it could be done with the new HC 38 and 48, but after he actually read the manuals, it was the same as the HC26: must have a Firewire port on the VCR. How dumb is that? How many of us have all these old VHS tapes, probably old VCRs too, and none of the old ones will have FireWire ports!
I have always recommended copying VHS footage to DV tapes, and now I am not going to be able to do that unless I get a converter. Seems a bit expensive for just the few VHS tapes that I forgot to convert previously.
I tried to see if the HC 30 can be repaired again....Sony wants $211 just to check it out. I can buy a new camcorder for $320 so it doesn't seem worth it unless I can connect the touch-screen failure with the problem with video recording that was supposedly corrected.
May have to get a converter.....last resort is another old camcorder Sony TRV something. It is on its last legs, but maybe it could work for a few hours more!
Wanted to let it be known that direct recording from an old VCR to new Sony miniDV cannot be done.

Hi tilman - yes - bottom line is not to discard an old vidcam with analogue-in when buying its 'higher-speced(?!) replacement - although that doesn't help Beverly with her problem.
There must be large numbers of second-hand cams with that function being sold as people rush to buy DVD vidcams etc, so it will be worth looking out for a good cheap one.
It seems that soon the only mini-DV cams will be higher-end models, some of which, being larger, have much reduced portability. Ah! Progress!

  • Problems importing AVI with DV codec to Premiere Pro

Problems importing AVI with DV codec to Premiere Pro  (720x564 px, 32 kHz stereo, 24.4 bitrate)
I can't import that video. What can I do?

    Svanur,
I agree with Harm. The specs. do not match up correctly. Where did those AVI files come from?
I assume that you are working in PAL-land (and not NTSC-land). Is that correct?
What platform are you working on, Mac, or PC?
When you attempt to Import those AVI files, what is the exact error message that you are getting?

  • Tapes with (Imported) in the label

Every once in a while, my DPM 2010 tape labels appear as "Imported."  I have only used this one DPM server and it has always been DPM 2010, so no version/system migrations.  One dat the tape will labeled normally and the next, it seems like DPM
forgot about the tape.  Often times when I attempt to view the contents of the tapes, I am forced to recatalog the tape.  The tapes and jobs on the tapes are nowhere close to being expired.
This is a HUGE problem when I need to restore an Exchange mailbox from a tape, as individual mailboxes can not be restored from "Imported" tapes.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I have something similar happening in my DPM 2012 SP1.
Few days ago we finally got a tape library that is capable to read barcodes, so we added barcodes to all our tapes and today we put some tapes in the library for reading the barcodes and assigning the OMID to barcodes.
At first step I had a "suspect" tape due to the misalignment between OMID and Barcode. We fixed that on the DB.
Another issue is that, after the inventory, we have the (imported) in the label.
    Why?
I didn't import those tapes, these are the same tapes that the same server has written few days ago. Why are they rcognized as (imported) ?
