Importing to iMovie : where is my video ?

I've been working around the annoying quirks iMovie's been presenting to me, like videos uploaded directly to YouTube not actually appearing in my Channel, so having to save and upload from Finder.
But now I'm a bit stumped.
Here's exactly what happens, I import a video from my Canon EOS but after I've clicked import, a box appears saying "Optimizing Video", disappears then nothing. Where did it go ? :/
http://youtu.be/KUqEZQoa0Q8
It's not my computer or iMovie being slow is it ? The file still isn't there.
It's an OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.8
Thanks to anyone who can help.

I pretty much have this same problem. Hope it gets resolved.

  • Rotated movs not staying rotated after being imported into iMovie

    Hi,
Used Quicktime to rotate some camera phone videos and saved them as .mov files.
They play fine but on importing to iMovie they have reverted to their unrotated state!
    How annoying!?

    Ouch!
QuickTime 7 has done away with the ability to freely rotate (or skew) video tracks and the link you've provided shows screen shots that do not appear in QT 7 Pro.
Version 7 allows rotation (90° increments) and "offset" (location of the track as a layer).
Since I don't own a camcorder I rarely run into this issue. Some people shoot in "Portrait" mode (turn the camera 90° and shoot) and then have issues importing to a DV app like iMovie. It wants to scale or squish of stretch your video capture to the DV dimensions (720x480).
So. What's a gal gonna do with portrait video?
QuickTime Pro 7 can fix it, too. Just not as easy as version 6 and with less visual "clues" as to what is happening while you edit.
QuickTime Pro can have up to 99 layers (tracks).
Make an image format file (.png if you need alpha channels) sized to the iMovie format size. NTSC is 720X480 pixels. The image will be all black (paint bucket tool) and saved as .png or even .pct. Don't use .jpg because it doesn't allow transparency and avoid .gif format because of the lack of colors.
Open this new 720X480 image using QT Pro. Select all (Command-A) and copy (Command-C). It's now stored on the Mac clipboard.
Open the video shot in portrait mode. Select all (Command-A) and choose "Add to Selection & Scale" from the Edit menu.
    Not done just yet.
Open the Movie Properties window and single click on your video track (the real video track). Click the Visual Settings tab where you can adjust its "offset" and "scaled size". Adjust these settings to what works best for your video track size.
Switch back to the Player window and test. Adjust as needed until you're happy with the file and the position of your video track against this black background image. If you don't even see your video track you'll need to set its "layer" number lower than your black background image. Negative values can be entered.
All happy now? Are you sure?
Two options for this new file. Save As (self-contained) to make a QuickTime movie you could use in a Web page. Had you used a color other than black for the image this is where you could "blend" it into the background of your page.
Export. To DV Stream. This helps "lock" your file and it will rapidly import into iMovie where you can edit it further.
What about the added B/W .png file? It only acts like a placeholder to force your portrait movie be served in landscape format. I'll bet it isn't 20KB's in file size.
Hope this helps other users. Lots of steps but great results (when done correctly).

How can I import into imovie from my cannon video camera built in memory.  All that comes up when I connect the USB cable is what is stored on the memory card and it doesn't give me the option to use what is stored on the built in memory

That is not a feature of iPhoto - suggest to Apple - iPhoto Menu ==> provide iPhoto feedback.
With the new Photo app later this year the integration between IOS and the Mac will be much greater

  • Video footage I've imported from iMovie to Premiere cs6 is missing after the import!  please help!

I initially imported raw video footage from an event that I shot into iMovie 11, but later decided to try an edit the footage in Adobe Premiere CS6.  I successfully imported the iMovie file folder into CS6, then saved and exited the program to work on it after lunch.  When I returned and reopened the file, the footage could not be found.  I attempted to reopen it in iMovie and it came up as a missing file also.  I know it successfully opened in Premiere because I've seen the footage.  I didn't trash anything so it's not in the trash.  Where did my footage go, and how can I retrieve it?

    Hi Ann, Hi JSW,
I looked around a bit and noticed that this same problem sometimes happens in iMovie itself. People lose their media because it gets copied inside the project file itself. If you right click to see the package contents, you might be able to locate the media and copy it to a dedicated folder, then reconnect media to it in Premiere Pro. See this post on the apple website: Source clip missing | Apple Support Communities
    Thanks,

iPhoto pulls off new videos from my iPhone 5 just fine.  Does iPhoto automatically come up when you connect your iPhone?  If it does, you should see your iPhone under "Devices" in iPhoto and then can select the videos to transfer (select, then Import Selected), though that should happen automatically.

  • Video skips or lags when being imported into iMovie

    System Specs: iMac; 3.4 GHz i7; 12GB Ram; OS X 10.6.8; iMovie '11
Other equipment: Sony Mini DV Casette Recorder; Canon XL2; Drobo
I've got my Sony Mini DV Recorder "daisy chained" to my Drobo which is connected to my iMac via FireWire.  I'm trying to import video shot on my Canon XL2 into iMovie.  However, the video is skipping and/or lagging (depending on one's perspective) during import and during playback within iMovie as well.  As far as I can tell, the actual tape is not skipping.  When I watch the video on the Sony Recorder's display the playback is "normal", no skip or lag to speak of.

Don't give up just yet! Where I work we've got some of those old Sony GVD-1000 series decks (if the pinch roller doesn't break off unexpectedly) and have been able to use a Firewire Adapter that plugs into the Firewire 800 connector. And it adapts then from 6pin Firewire 400 (A-style connector) to the 4-pin connector. That has also worked with some cheapy Canon MiniDV cams we have too.
    It's a Sonnet Technologies plug:
    http://www.sonnettech.com/product/fw_adapter.html
Now it may make no sense at all, versus a hard wired cable that has the correct connectors on both ends, but maybe give an adatper a try and use your old 6pin-4pin cable? I completely understand wanting to keep the head wear down as much as possible on the XL2. That would be a tragedy to use that device as simple feeder deck just to do importing of video.

  • I'm thinking of using Final Cut Pro to straighten slightly crooked footage and then re-import back to iMovie to complete the video. Does this have any impact on image quality?

I'm thinking of using Final Cut Pro to straighten slightly crooked footage and then re-import back to iMovie to complete the video. Does this have any impact on image quality?

As your rotate the image, you will begin to see black edges. So, as Tom implies, the image must be scaled up to hide those voids. If you shot 4k ad are editing in a HD timeline, no problem, lots of room to spare. If you shot 1080 and are editing in a 1080 timeline, you will run into issues at a certain point. However, if your 1080 project is going to be transcoded to 720 or ye olde DVD you won't notice any deterioration at all.

  • Can I import movies originating from video's that were put on a DVD import in IMovie?, Can I import movies originating from video's that were put on a DVD import in IMovie?

Can I import movies originating from video's that were put on a DVD import into IMovie?

You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

  • I imported video from a card into IPhoto and it plays in slow motion.  Any suggestions? Would importing into IMovie help at all?

    Hello
I am importing video and pics into Iphoto and the video plays in slow motion.  Would importing in Imovie help or does it have something to do with the type of camera or file the video is in?

It should. So they aren't shown in the Last Import smart album, right? Try the following:
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - Run Option #4, Rebuild Database, followed by Option #1 if needed.

  • Screen Capture Video Loses Quality When Imported Into iMovie - WHY?

I am using screen capture software to make a video of my screen at 1024x768. The video is for a tutorial. I want to use iMove to get things like transitions and such into the movie, and to add text and audio. The problem is that, although the video looks great in QuickTime, it loses quality significanly when I import into iMove. The text on the screen is blurry, and the quality of everything else is terrible as well.
Is this s limitation of iMove? Can screen capture video be imported? Does it only work with DV?
Also, I tried to convert the file to many other formats, from QuickTime to MPEG-4, so it's not the file type.
If anyone can help me out, I've be very grateful.
    Thanks!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Your dimensions are getting in the way. iMovie converts your 1024X768 to a DV Stream file that is 720X480.
One workaround would be to set your display resolution smaller. Try 800X600 (if your windows fit that size).
If you're using Snapz Pro you should set your window capture to 640X480. This size will import nicely into iMovie.
An even better way would be to do all of the work using QuickTime Pro. Again a 1024X768 QT.mov file would not fit on the most common display settings used. When you add the QT Player window the controller would be below the screen and not accessible for most users.
800X600 would make a better file (smaller, too). It would still be 4:3 aspect and would also import into iMovie.

  • Where are iPhoto video thumbnails in iMovie?

For the longest time I kept hitting the 'delay' or 'not now' button when iMovie asked to build thumbnails for my iphoto videos. Finally last night I had the time to do that. It took over two hours to do - and now I have no idea where imovie put them. I see the videos in iphoto but I do not see them in imovie where I need them for a film project. While it was doing this it said something like 'building album or folder: iphoto videos" I didn't pay close attention. Now I don't see any new folder that contains all my iphoto videos.
    Any suggestions???
    Thank you.

  • Why won't my video won't import into iMovie. There is a red ERROR message underneath clip.

I just imported 40 out of 43 clips of HD video from my JVC HD Everio camera into iMovie '11. It's my first time using either equipment for editing. I selected import all but only 40 of the clips successfully imported. 3 of the clips were not able to be imported but I can still play the clips fine from the import window. The clips all have red error messages underneath them. This is an issue that I've seen posted other places online but it doesn't seem to be resolved. It's very frustrating for me, I've been researching online to try to fix this for hours now. The closest I have come to a solution involved deleting extra 3rd party plugins from my quicktime folder however I don't have a folder named "Quicktime" in my Library. So I don't know what to do. Please help!

The error message appears under video clips already imported into iMovie. Like in this screenshot http://km.support.apple.com/resources/sites/APPLE/content/live/VIDEOS/0/VI57/en_ US/imovie-start-poster.jpg on my mac out of the 6 clips shown per row, only 5 of them have the word "imported" underneath them in white letters and then one of the clips has the word "error" underneath it.
I don't think it's a corrupted file because yeah I can play the three clips just fine. The page that I read that had that fix in it (deleted plugins) was here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1893021?start=0&tstart=0 The correct answer is near the bottom of the page and was posted by iphonejunky. Maybe the fix would be that simple but like I said, I can't find a folder named quicktime in my library. I don't know if I'm just stupid or what.
I don't think I have Flip4Mac installed because I never consciously installed it. I use VLC for playing most video. The clips imported are all .mov

  • What kind of video formats can i use to import into imovie?

what kind of video formats can i use to import into imovie?

    Hello,
Adobe stopped supporting flash for android since ICS. You may still be able to download the latest (old) flash player "at your own risk" from Adobe archived flash player versions:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html
Please read the disclaimer at the end as it is not advised to install unsupported flash versions.
As for video streaming, there are lot of apps for that and it's just a matter of your preference.
    Hope that helps
