Importing two Quicktimes into iDVD?

I'm attempting to join a Part 1 and a Part 2 video I made...together as one iMovie...but having some kind of "parse" issue.
I had problems last couple weeks with stutter issues and many clips...and I converted the clips to several Quicktime share .aiff files and will try later to import those into my movie project. Folks here helped me get thru the stutter issue, thanks.
Someone mentioned one possibility was that I could convert both Parts 1 and Parts 2 to some high end Quicktime movie...then open up iDVD with an open file and import both those movies there with care not to import them into the menu file. Okay, I can kind of visualize that...but, my question is...will this conversion to Quicktime affect video quality done this way? Secondly...what happens to the chapters I created in iDVD of each of the two parts? Are they recognizable in iDVD imported as Quicktime? Will the two separate parts imported into iDVD remain as separate parts 1 and 2...or is there a way they will or can be joined into one movie?
thanks

Which version of iMovie do you have? Version 5?
I have iMovie 5
There are a couple ways to go about it. One, if you
have the drive space, is to start a new iMovie
project. Now go to the Finder, find your first
project.
Brought up Finder...
If iMovie5 and later, right click on the project and
pick "Show Package Contents" to get into the folder
structure.
Here I ran into a problem...
eMacs and their mouse don't as I know have a right click option as do PC's...
I did pop on another mouse in our Mac lab that was on another computer called a macally iMouse...which has a right clicker...but when I held the cursor over the iMovie project in the Finder...and right clicked, nothing happened. I held it down for awhile also, but no options came up for anything.
If you have an idea why the mouse is not doing that...I'm so close to finishing this project.
We should be getting our new Intel Duo 2 Core this week...and hopefully soon the 500GB external drive along with it.
I guess I could attach the external drive to the macs in our mac lab...save the projects to the external drive, and THEN perhaps something will happen, the mouse right click. I don't know.
I guess what I'm saying is perhaps the macs being on a network server do not operate the same as a stand alone machine.
appreciate your help...

  • Anyone know maximum QT size that can be imported or dropped into iDVD 2.1?

I've got a QT movie of family photos put to music using iMovie 3.03 and exported to Quicktime as full quality DV.
It plays fine before export. It plays fine within QT, but I really want to import it into iDVD and burn it so it can be played on any dvd player (e.g. my parent's 50th this weekend : ). Everytime I try to import or drag and drop the movie into iDVD 2.1, I get nothing.
One thing bothers me: I burned the QT movie to DVD doing a drag and drop/burn. I then tried to drag and drop and import this file into iDVD. Now, my Mac won't eject the dvd because it says it's in use. Does this mean that iDVD IS working on importing my movie even though the cursor is still active and nothing shows up under my file project info?
My QT file is 540 KB. Is this too big? If so, what can I do? If not, what could my problem be?
I've posted a similar question over in iDVD to see if anyone there has any advice.

Try a restart. That usally helps with me. I don't use iDVD, but I have had some issues with Drag and Drops. Some kind of background process won't quit and thinks it's in use.
Before the restart, quit all apps and then try to eject. Maybe that will help. If not, a restart always does the trick.

  • == Importing .mov Quicktime into FCExpress4????  Still Pix?? ==

If I switch to FCE4, will it fix what I hate about IMovie?? IMPORTATION.
    -0-
I want to upgrade from IMovie (I use 06HD because I like the full timeline) and my main motivation is to eliminate the very tedious time-consuming importation process. I make MP4 HD1080 files with a camcorder and also have many .mov files. Importing, say, 10 gigs takes DAYS. Literally. Using Quicktime Pro to covert to DV files takes as long (I assume that Imovie '06 HD is USING Quicktime to convert all the .mov and .mp4 files to the .DV files that IMovie is made for).
Does Final Cut Express 4 actually edit .mov and .mp4 files, or does it convert them like IMovie does? Would the importation process in FCE4 be FAST, like it is in FC Pro?

And a still photo question: I just used IMovie '06 HD to edit a 20 minute movie on my trip to Nepal. Half of it was made from 7 megapixel stills, almost always using the Ken Burns Effect to zoom right or left aty various speeds. It was easy and looks great. Would FCE4 import and manipulate those kind of still as well as IMovie?
    -0-
Finally, does FCE4 have a version of Compressor, so my final movies will fit on on one DVD in the highest quality?
    Thanks for helping.
    Steve H

Let's take this in steps, because of the many questions.
Does Final Cut Express 4 actually edit .mov and .mp4 files, or does it convert them like IMovie does?
FCE does edit .mov Quicktime files, as well as DV in realtime. .mp4 files won't work in FCE, they will first need to be converted using Quicktime Pro or MPEG Streamclip to a Quicktime file FCE can use.
Would the importation process in FCE4 be FAST, like it is in FC Pro?
The speed of import depends on the computer that you are working on. However, FCE is pretty much the same interface as FCPro, and is in most respects the same. FCE should work for importing exactly the same as FCP does, except that it can only work with DV, HDV, AVCHD, and several Quicktime codecs.
Would FCE4 import and manipulate those kind of still as well as IMovie?
Yes, FCE should work as well as iMovie for stills. While no editing program was designed for still image manipulation, and thus the quality of any results are still not perfect, anything you make in FCE you should expect to be of comparable quality to iMovie stills. As to the Ken Burns effect, here I believe you are in for a treat. iMovie HD ('06) only allows you to pick start and end points for the effect. FCE lets you individually keyframe motion, so you can build any photo effect you'd like. For example, you could have a photo that pans from left to right, zooms in, then stays still for 30 seconds before rotating while at the same time zooming back out and moving off the screen. FCE lets you manipulate the parameters for a clip, and save how you want them to be at a particular time, giving you endless possibilities for animation of stills and video alike.
Finally, does FCE4 have a version of Compressor, so my final movies will fit on on one DVD in the highest quality?
FCE does not have a separate program (Compressor) as FCP does. However, if you export as Quicktime Movie then no quality will be lost. You then import that movie into iDVD for burning. iDVD does the encoding so that it will compress your files to fit on the DVD, at the highest quality possible. FCE's lossless export allows iDVD to burn so that you see minimal quality degradation between editing and viewing on your TV.
Hope this helped. I also switched from iMovie HD to FCE because I wanted more options. For me, the ability to have up to 99 video and audio tracks for advanced compositing as well as keyframing were what really drew me in. I couldn't have been more happy with the decision I made!

  • Why can't I import old imovies into idvd?

Why can't I import old imovies into idvd?

I have 68 GB free and the movie is a small one. The iDVD file is on my hard drive and in the dock.
Today I found a work around for this problem.  While I cannot open the original movie, I can access the clips in the media folder.  I put the clips together and made a new movie.   And I can import this to iDVD by going to "share" in the menu and selecting iDVD.

  • Importing a movie into iDVD from FCE

I am perplexed. In the iDVD - Movies display, there are shown half a dozen movies. The other couple of dozen movie files which do appear in Finder - Movies are not listed in iDVD. Nor will the movies in Finder-Movies drag over to iDVD. I clicked on the yellow triangle which appears in the "insert movie" box in the theme, clicked 'import' and it told me iDVD does not support that action. So how do I get a movie from Finder-Movies into iDVD? I did not have this trouble with iMovie.
This is my first completed FCE movie. And things were going so well.

To import movies into iDVD you may use the File/Import/Video... command, after selecting the theme you want to use for the DVD menu.
If a movie in the Import dialog window cannot be imported, probably it has a non standard format, and for sure it was not exported from FCE. Any movie exported from FCE with Export/Quicktime Movie (the only correct method to get a movie from FCE to iDVD) may be imported into iDVD.
So I suggest you review the procedure you used to export from FCE and try again.

  • Import iMovie '08 into iDVD '08 Movie Quality

In iLife '06 there were ways to import movies into iDVD to get a good quality movie. Like instead of using the export menu in iMovie I would just open iDVD and click and drag the .mov file straight into iDVD and the quality was great. I guess there was a bug in the exporting method. Now to get a good quality movie on a single layer dvd coming from iMovie '08 are there things I need to know?
PS. I would prefer HighDef with my Sony HDR-SR12. Yeah Yeah I know I need Blu-Ray but until that that comes only what is the best I can get?

  • Can I import wmv files into iDVD?

I have a client who just handed me some windows media files. Can I import those into iDVD without converting them?
    Cheers.
    Tom

    Hi
    It needs to be converted.
    .wmv
iMovie is by concept meant to work with miniDV camcorders . . any other 'imports' need a conversion or are not supported... a quick solution would be purchasing a plug-in from www.flip4mac.com, 49$, which allows the conversion of .wmv (a PC format) into something useful for iM (dv-stream) ...
or, ask the emailer to send it in some other codec .. mpg4 for example .. which will be converted by iM 'out-of-the-box' ...  and, to work with iM, the video should fulfill a few standards .. 720x480 pixel resolution, 30 frames per second ... otherwise, you will experience a dramatic loss of quality ..

  • Importing home dvd into iDVD and tweaking it?

I have some home movies that I burnt to dvd using a commercial dvd burner. now I would like to import the movie into imovie or idvd and add chapters, a theme, etc. Is this doable? If so, how? Thanks for any help you can give me.
    G4 dual 800   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
avoid lossy inbetween formats, as mp4 ...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    * connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
none of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

  • Can't import MPEG4 video into iDVD 5

I am trying to create a DVD using MPEG4 video that I downloaded
from iTunes. (I need to create a DVD of the Wonderpets TV show
for my son for Christmas.) iDVD 5 doesn't recognize it, nor does
iMovie HD 5, nor does Toast Titanium. I am assuming that either
there is some copy protection issue, or that I must upgrade iLife 05
to iLife 06. I would gladly upgrade to 06 if I was guaranteed that
it solve this, but there is no such info on the Apple site that offers
06 as a solution. The other problem is that iLife is not available as
a download, and if I need to purchase it I'll have to run out on
Christmas Eve to get it. I can image what fun traffic I'll run into.
Any solid info on this subject would be of greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the info. Very much appreciated.
I would have preferred a little warning on the site when I purchased the 10 episodes. Now I'll have to go to the Apple Store and buy an Apple Video Adaptor on Christmas Eve to play iTunes on my TV. The Apple Store is conveniently located in the Galleria, the busiest mall around... Happy Holidays

  • Importing form quicktime into the FCp

I want to reuse some footage from a film I now only have a s a quick time movie. But every time I drop the clips into the canvas they have a black border around them and they look smaller as a result. Anyway to get round this?

As Michael indicated, the pixel resolution of the QuickTime movie is most likely smaller than the pixel resolution of your FCP Sequence. If at all possible, re-use the original media, not the QuickTime file.

  • How to break down single file imported from quicktime into clips?

Can anyone help? I am trying to import video footage from a sony handycam, and have managed to import using USB via DvDxDV and then quicktime. However, it imports the movie as one big clip, is there anyway to instruct iMovie to break the clips down? Thanks

is there anyway to instruct iMovie to break the clips down?
You have to do that manually by Command-T or by "Split Clip at Playhead" -menu command.

  • Importing Images into IDVD for Slidshow

I am at a loss as to what is the best image size, resolution size, etc. when it comes to importing images into IDVD. I usually size my prints
4 x 6 @ 300 dpi.. This looks fine in the slideshow preview. After I burn the dvd and view it, the images lose quality, etc..
    Any help would be appreciated

What you're creating in iPhoto is a movie file that will get cut off in iDVD because of the TV over scan issue. Only stills imported and assembled into a slideshow in iDVD can be scaled to avoid the over scan.
So to get what you want you'll have to import the stills into iDVD from iPhoto and create the slideshow there.
If you have Quicktime Pro you can mask the QT movie with a black mask and cause the iPhoto QT movie to be scaled to the TV safe area. The steps are below. You'll have to experiment with the final sizes to get it exact:
Masking Movies to the TV Safe Area for iDVD
The mask should be 640 x 480 pixels and the movie at approx. 580 x 386 (I arrived at this figure by making a snapshot of the TV save area of an iDVD project with Snapz). You can set this size after you’ve joined it with the mask movie with Quicktime Player Pro.
Import the black mask jpg file into iMovie and and export it as a .mov file at the same length as your movie (there may be a way to not have to create a specific length mask for each movie but I haven't found it. If the times do not match the movie file will be synced to the length of the mask movie).
Open the mask movie in QT Player Pro and then open your regular movie and make it the front window of the two. Now you'll need to run a QT Player AppleScript titled "Merge Movie 1 into Movie 2". You can get it from this Apple site: Quicktime Player Scripts.
Then run the script. You can then run the merged movie to check it out. Your movie will be located in the upper lefthand corner of the window when played.
When you open the Movie Properties window from the Window menu for the combined file you’ll see the following:
Video Track 1: the black mask
Video Track 2 : you movie file
Tween track: Have no idea what this is.
    Sound track: self explanaotry
    Black mask.
To set the size of your movie to the correct size select it in the Properties window and click on Visual Settings pane. Then enter 580 in the first field and hit enter. With the Preserve Aspect Ration box checked the other size will automatically be set.
To center the video track in the center of the mask select the Video Track 2 item and plug in a offset of about: 70 & 45. You'll probably have to play with that to fine tune the centering. Doing the math and subtracting the movie dimensions from the mask dimensions and dividing by two just didn't get it perfectly centered bit with a little eyeballing and trial and error it got there.
Now save as a new self contained movie after checking the High Quality box at the bottom right.
You can now import it into iDVD for preview and burning. One drawback is that you can't invoke the TV save area for a movie in iDVD to check it out. But you can mark it on the monitor screen while viewing a menu or slideshow and then play the movie to see how close you came. I found that the size was still a little under the TV safe area when burned and played on my TV. It may be the difference in normal CRT screens and flat screens, etc.

  • Editing and saving individual clips for import into iDVD

I've begun a large project digitizing many old family 8mm projector films. Each reel, varying in size from 3 to 20 min, was imported into iMovie HD 6 as individual clips. These clips are, in a sense, self contained movies. I want to use iMovie to mute the sounds, add a soundtrack, and make some visual adjustments. My goal is to create an iDVD project with several submenus based on location, in each menu will be a list of the reels (iMovie clips), that took place in each location.
I've figured out how to do everything except saving and exporting edited clips to iDVD. Since iMovie is set up to create one movie per project (the timeline represents one movie, right?), I can import individual clips into iDVD but they aren't edited. What I want to be able to do is drag one clip into the timeline, make my adjustments, save it, put it back with the other clips to be imported in iDVD, and repeat the process. Is this possible in iMovie? Should I get something else like Final Cut Express?

I gather that what you want to do is modify the clips and save them as self contained movies for eventual import into iDVD.
Edit your clip in iMovie, add your sound track, and then File/Export/compress movie for Full Quality to your desktop as a self contained Quicktime Movie. Each of these self contained Quicktime Movies can be dragged into your iDVD project by dragging them to the edge of the main iDVD menu window.

  • Import files into iDVD from iMovie OR export files from iMovie to iDVD?

I've been told it is better to import iMovie projects into iDVD (within iDVD) rather than exporting from iMovie to iDVD within iMovie. I was told that iDVD does a better job of rendering things than iMovie. Is this true because this is not the instructions given in the iMovie tutorial.

Not sure what advice you have been given and how you have interpreted it.
You are of course referring to im6 here since you can't drag projects from im08 to iDVD.
I don't make many DVD's anymore and may well be wrong here but I'm not aware that dragging an im6 project to iDVD is any different than using share/iDVD and I'm wondering if the advice relates to exporting from im6 and then importing the exported movie into iDVD which is indeed a different workflow.
