Importing unencrypted dvd video files

I have always brought in video from DVD through a converter and used batch capture. However, I was given the following instructions for bringing in the files without a converter:
"Use imovie and do import and select dvd as source, will copy raw dv footage and save. Convert to quicktime stream, can do in imovie if have quicktime pro, and final cut has as well."
When I tried to follow these instructions using imovie, I got stuck after selecting import and then selecting the dvd footage. It would show a window as if it was importing and then nothing would happen. Where did I go wrong? Does anyone know how this should work who can explain it to me?

Roundabout way to do it and the instructions really don't make any sense anyway. Even if it works you'll be doing multiple conversions of your video.
Take a look at MPEG Streamclip. It's free, works great, and many people in this forum use it. It's a utility that will directly convert the DVD video to the DV format that FCE requires. (And if you don't already have the QuickTime MPEG 2 Playback Component installed on your Mac, you will need to get it from Apple - $19.99)

I asked this question before but I can't find it now. Anyway, I'm trying to import a DVD video that was made on a MAC and use it on a new iMovie project.
How do I do the importing.

If the video is already on a DVD:
You need to convert the VOB files in the TS-Folder of the DVD back to DV which iMovie is designed to handle. For that you need mpegStreamclip:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
which is free, but you must also have the  Apple mpeg2 plugin :
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D2187Z/A/quicktime-mpeg-2-playback-component-f or-mac-os-x
(unless you are running Lion in which case see below))
    which is a mere $20.
Another possibility is to use DVDxDV:
    http://www.dvdxdv.com/NewFolderLookSite/Products/DVDxDV.overview.htm
    which costs $25.
For the benefit of others who may read this thread:
Obviously the foregoing only applies to DVDs you have made yourself, or other home-made DVDs that have been given to you. It will NOT work on copy-protected commercial DVDs, which in any case would be illegal.
And from the TOU of these forums:
    Keep within the Law
No material may be submitted that is intended to promote or commit an illegal act.
Do not submit software or descriptions of processes that break or otherwise ‘work around’ digital rights management software or hardware. This includes conversations about ‘ripping’ DVDs or working around FairPlay software used on the iTunes Store.
    If you are running Lion:
    From the MPEG Streamclip homepage
The installer of the MPEG-2 Playback Component may refuse to install the component in Lion. Apple states the component is unnecessary in Lion, however MPEG Streamclip still needs it. See this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3381
To install the component in Lion, please download MPEG Streamclip 1.9.3b7 beta above; inside the disk image you will find the Utility MPEG2 Component Lion: use it to install the MPEG-2 Playback Component in Lion. The original installer's disk image (QuickTimeMPEG2.dmg) is required.
The current versions of MPEG Streamclip cannot take advantage of the built-in MPEG-2 functionality of Lion. For MPEG-2 files you still need to install the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component, which is not preinstalled in Lion. You don't have to install QuickTime 7.

Can I save both DVD-R and DVD-Video files onto the same DVD?

    Hi Stan,
I just want the user to be able to run my video clips either on a
computer or on a standard DVD player. It would be nice to include both
formats on a single disc. I am new to this and am not sure what format
is most widely used for standard DVD players. Thanks for your response
and any guidance you can give me.

  • Importing existing flash video files??

    howdy
quick question. if you import existing flash video files into an encore project, will this help reduce the final render time? or will encore rerender the existing flash video files?
    cheers
    angus

Encore CS3 won't import FLV files. You must render the project to Flash.
You may want to file a feature request at Adobe's support page asking for support for Flash-ready assets, to eliminate the need to transcode in Encore.

  • Layout found in the VIDEO_TS directory is not a DVD-Video file...etc.

Hi all, I am struggling to get a project finished and really need some help after trawling the net without winning.
I can "Build" my project to a folder with Audio_TS and Video_TS files without errors (it's a dual-layer project, by the way), but when I burn the VIDEO_TS files in Toast, the finished DVD won't play as it should in a DVD player. Nothing like in the simulation, which plays fine, buy the way...
When I burn from inside DVDSP, I get the error message:
"The file 'CIRCUSOFMYSTERY.layout found in the VIDEO_TS folder is not a DVD-Video file and will not be included in the final disc or DLT"
    and, directly underneath is:
"The file 'VOB_DATA.LAY'.layout found in the VIDEO_TS folder is not a DVD-Video file and will not be included in the final disc or DLT"
...so I gather these errors are causing the playback error...
    The problem is displayed thus:
When the disc is inserted, the short video I have set as a first-play does not play, in fact nothing happens. When I hit the DVD player's PLAY button, the main track plays and the menu is not shown at all.
If someone could offer some assistance I would certainly appreciate it.
    Cheers.
    Spookola.

    The messages are not errors.
They are for information only -it is just telling you that those files will not be in the final DVD because the finished disc doesn't need them, nor would they serve any useful purpose if retained.
The Build folder does need them though, which is why it is listed as a "warning". I find that "warning" is a little exaggerated -"attention" would probably be a better choice. If those items are removed, running the build command again will recreate them.
Your issue might be a setting in Toast. Before you burn the img file, test it in Mac OS X's built in DVD Player. Mount the image in the Finder and in DVD Player, go to File > Open DVD Media.

  • Problems importing DVD video files into CS3

    Hello!
We own a copy of a guest service video that I'm trying to edit down for a condensed version used in our in-house training.
I use PP CS3 and have saved the video files off onto my hard drive, but they are not importing into PP.   I'm having a non-supported format error message.
The files look just like those I saved and imported successfully from our corporate orientation DVD, except for file extensions that are showing up on these guest service files;  where they did not on my first project.
These new file names are:  VIDEO_TS.IFO,  VIDEO_TS.VOB   and   VIDEO_TS.BUP.
Any wisdom would be appreciated!    I'm wondering if they are encrypted or secured, but the DVD is from 2001 and it seems unlikely.
    Thanks!
    M

    Mary,
I understand. I came to video from a similar background, though I did have a degree from film school, as a foundation. Back then, video was live feed, or archived to 2" tape, that could only be edited with tape and a splicing block. They did not even have deck-to-deck editing yet.
I'd spent decades with PS and AI, before I came to PrPro and to digital video. Since there was a 3-decade lag between my cine days, and when I first hit PrPro, I still have a lot to learn, and that's my main purpose for spending time in this forum - learning.
Good luck, and hope that the material can be Imported and edited just fine. Now, the MPEG-2 format/CODEC is not ideal and on several fronts, especially quality, it can be done, and done pretty well. It's the variables, that can get in the way, and sometimes, one has to side-step those with maybe ripping software, or other processes, many of which are covered in that article. More than one way to "skin the cat... " Right now, we're X'ing our fingers that the simple method will work. If not, do not give up, as there ARE other things that should get you editing.

  • Having trouble with DVD Video files. Please Help! :)

Hi I recently got a film DVD I wanted to take a clip off. However although I can watch the section I want in Windows Media Player, when I import the film into Premiere - some of it is missing! there are 4 files '4-1',4-2','4-3',4-4' which make up the movie. I can load them all in but 4-3 is missing the last 15-20 minutes, even though I know its there - cos this file is the same size as the previous one which is full length. Does anyone know why this would be? The DVD is unencrypted.
Please help - its quite annoying that the small section of film I want is the bit that won't appear! Thank you very much
    Rich

    Based on this one line:
    The DVD is unencrypted.
I was assuming that it was not protected. However, as you point out, some aspects might be, and the OP might not be completely aware of this.
If there is protection, I strongly urge anyone to respect that, regardless of their intended use of the material. Copy protection is there for a very good reason. Regardless of what one might be able to do, they should be 100% ethical, and honor any/all copy protection. This is true for material from a videographer, or from a commercial studio. Should you need to use the material in such a DVD-Video, you should contact the author to get first permission, and then the original source material, that has not undergone the MPEG-2 compression to DVD-Video.
Again, I assume that the OP knows that this is NOT an issue, and will not figure into the problem. In that case, all above does NOT apply in this case, but some other reader might make note of it.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Importing/Ripping DVD Video

    Hi,
I'm creating a presentation for a client that provided a series of DVDs.
How can I rip or import the videofiles in the "Video_TS" folder?
I have Keynote 3 and Quicktime Pro.
    Thanks.

Miranda, Handbrake is indeed very good at ripping DVD content.
Do note that using this software to rip commercial DVDs is probably illegal in Canada and the US (especially for non-personal use). If the DVD provided by the client was produced by them, you should be fine, although they might then be able to give you the original video files (which would be preferable, since ripping will likely involve some loss of quality).

  • NOT ABLE TO IMPORT MUSIC AND VIDEO FILES FROM IPOD TO COMPUTER/ITUNES LIBRARY !!!!

Hi.... I am having IPod Nano 5th Generation. I can access music and video files (that are stored in Ipod memory) in Ipod. But when I connect the ipod to computer, I am not able to access/import these music and video files through computer. Also, I am not able to see any folders like DCIM, Contacts, etc... in the memory of IPod. Can any body help me out... ?

Search it up on google.com.  There's a lot of apps that will help you do this.  Check out this one:

You can also check out this video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWvYo6Gcq44
I tried the import software (trial version) and it was fine but I didn't want to pay for software.  You can authorize up to 5 computers in the house to access your iTunes music and other iTunes purchases. Open iTunes, you can go under Store and select Authoize this computer.
    Good luck!

  • Unable to import/preview any video file using Lightroom 5/5.2

    Hi,
I am a fairly new user to Lightroom (around 4 months), and have been fascinated by the capabilities of this software when it comes to photos. From the start, I used to notice (but chose to ignore) that lightroom would not be able to import any of my video files successfully (all in supported formats such as avi, mov, mp4, usually mov from my Nikon DSLR). Recently, I have started digging around to find a solution for this and fix this issue of not being able to preview or import any video file. I have gone through most of the related posts around the interwebs about this (including installing QuickTime, checking my AntiVirus, checking specific processes whether they are running or not). As a last attempt to resolve this, I am hoping to get some expert help on this form. As a sample of the error message which I get to see everytime is attached below. Also given below is my system info. I can provide further debugging information if required, but I really, desperately want this to work and be able to import videos. Thanks a bunch!

  • How to import two AVI video files & convert to one FLV ?

    Status:
    - Newbie using PC & Flash CS3 ver9l
    - I can import a single AVI video file and convert it to an FLV video.
    Problem:
    - I have two AVI video files... one 4GB (20 minute) long and one 2GB (10 minute) long... and want to combine them to have a single 30 minute long FLV video file.
    Question:
    - Can I do this in Flash? When I "convert" a single AVI video to a FLV using the File, Import method... I can't really see the video on the Flash time line. I'm a newbie so I'm probably doing something wrong.
    - I tried doing a File, Import for file-1.avi and then doing it for file-2.avi... but the two were on top of each other... and not end to end.
Maybe some kind sould will walk me through this.
    Thanks for any help.

Your not going to be able to combine two videos as one in flash, if your using Win try Win Movie Maker, I believe you can drag both into a WMVM timeline and can then save as one file, then you can use AVC video converter or the like to encode them into an .flv or.f4v file.

  • Import Canon HF20 video-files into Mac

    Hello!
I just bought a new camcorder, Canon Vixia HF20. I installed the following cd called; Digital video, solution disk, which I was supposed to use to import the video-files into my mac.
When I installed it, I plugged in the camcorder with the USB, but the program says "no camera was found".
It tried to set the USB connection type to computer/printer, but it didn't work...
Is there somebody who could help me with this please? I think it is ridiculous if a well-known producer as Canon cannot make their programs for macs! It has to be a solution to this?
    Thanks.

    Found out myself.
