Importing *.url favorites (from a HDD folder) into Mac - HELP?!

Background:
My old PC (running Win. XP) hard disc drive failed, and I had a local computer shop clear the contents onto a 500GB external HDD as I couldn't do it.
Issue:
They have put the favorites into a folder, simply with all the links down as .url ending files. eg:
remember to do this.url
shop link.url
website link.url
etc...
How on earth do I get these into Safari (or even Firefox) on my Mac? I tried importing with both browsers, but they can't recognise the filetype it seems. While Safari (but NOT Firefox) can open each link individually if I click on it, as I have 1000+ in here, I can't possibly open them all rename and resave; I need to do a mass-import job.
(Note I don't have access to a Windows machine, and importantly they are coming from a file on a separate HDD and not from Windows machine where they can perhaps be exported out.)
...did some Googling, but no joy. Help appreciated

DONE IT !!
Finally found this out myself...
You will need (borrow): *a Windows machine (or have it running in bootcamp/virtual machine on mac)*.
{quote:title=*Follow this:*}{quote}
– copy the folder with all your *.url files in it onto the Windows machine (eg. onto the desktop); a usb stick or email the file to the win machine seems easiest.
– find the Favorites folder on the win machine (I was using old win98 where it's at ~WindowsFavorites, but may be slightly different path on newer versions), where you'll notice all the fav's already on the win machine you are using (if any) will be saved as .url ending files.
– copy & paste your .url links into that folder in one go (or just select the ones you want).
– open IE (Internet Explorer), and export the fav's under the File drop-menu option; usually Export or similar. It will produce an .htm file and ask where you want to save (back onto Desktop perhaps).
– copy this .htm file onto your Mac somewhere (via usb stick/email, again), open *Safari>File>Import Bookmarks*, and they'll appear inside Safari as an imported set of bookmarks. (NB: you may/may not have to change the file ending from .htm to .html manually before importing for it to work.)
Et voila!
Now you can do what you like with them (including re-sorting/re-filing, or importing/exporting to Firefox/other browser of choice, or upload to online bookmark site, or ... well you get the idea).
Pain in the backside you can't do this natively inside OS X, but at least there IS a solution. Shame it took me hours to work it out!

  • I want to transfer/sync my "favorites" from Internet Explorer 9 to Fire Fox, which only offers "Bookmarks." How do I import my favorites from Explorer to Firefox?

I was unable to view Comcast videos, only, using IE 9, and a Comcast tech came out to my home to troubleshoot the problem. He could not resolve the issue within IE9 and I am operating from a Lenovo Laptop model type R500. The tech suggested that I use Mozilla Fire Fox for several reasons: 1) Fire Fox provides better security; and 2) it fixed the problem of me not being able to view Comcast videos, which I can not view in Fire Fox but not IE. I can most videos in both browsers, just now Comcast videos in IE. I have used IE for many, many years and have important websites stored in my IE "favorites" feature, but when I transferred usage to Fire Fox only my Bookmarks imported and not my "Favorites." How can I get my "Favorites" easily imported into Fire Fox?

Dear mbrubeck: Thank you for so quickly responding to my question and I was able to import my favorites based on your help -- thank you for your generous spirit of volunteerism to assist me. The only thing that has seemed to have become problematic, is that after I followed the instructions and successfully imported my favorites from IE9 into FF 5.0, the bookmark symbol, formally located on the right upper hand corner of the FF page next to the "home" button has disappeared and I do not know how to make it return, so that I can easily access my bookmarks. Any ideas on how to get that icon to return? Thank you again for your assistance, as I am brand-spanking new user of MFF. Thank you again for your help and if you can help figure this one last quirk, I would be most appreciative. TH

  • Bought laptop only has Firefox. How to import IE-Favorites from my USB?

Bought a used laptop that only has Firefox Version 3.6.12. How do I import IE-Favorites from my USB stick?

Firefox can't directly import IE Favorites, you need to '''export''' in HTML format and then '''import''' that file into Firefox.
    In IE: <br />
File > Import/Export - Export to HTML file
    ''then in Firefox:'' <br />
Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks -> Import & Backup - Import HTML... = From HTML file

  • I imported my favorites from Internet Explorer but I need to know how to display my "favorites" in the tool bar so I can access and organize them

I imported my favorites from Internet Explorer, but how do I display "favorites" in the tool bar so I can access and organize them?

It did merge them after a fashion, glad I took a backup first even if I did only perhaps create 3 or 4 bookmarks today. So if I have bookmark separators, it's going to figure out which group to put them in (no way). Anyway I thought they would just go down to the bottom of the bookmarks menu like the other method, like when I export and import bookmarks in Firefox where they do go to the end of the Bookmarks Menu folder and would simply delete one folder.
Anyway this would not be typical because I don't want any bookmarks from IE.

  • Do I have to import my songs from my cd's into itunes only? Or can I sync

I just got fifth generationvideo ipod, however I am new to the itunes store etc. Do I have to import my songs from my cd's into itunes only? Or can I sync songs from windows media player off of my cd's?

If you add your Windows Media Player songs to iTunes--the songs will stay in the original place on your computer and you only add a file path. This lets iTunes know where to find the songs. This doesn't take up very much hard disk space. The paths are stored in your iTunes folder (which can be found in your My Documents>My Music folder on your hard drive. You can watch this folder to see how big it gets. When you BUY songs from the iTunes store--then the song file will be stored in your iTunes folder on your hard drive. If you buy a lot of music, this folder could get large.
To add song files or folders, go to the top line of iTunes, click File>Add File OR Add Folder and then navigate to the place on your hard disk where you have your Windows Media Files stored.

  • I am trying to import Firefox bookmarks from a Windows machine into Firefox on an Apple. I do not want to use Safari. How do I do this?

am trying to import Firefox bookmarks from a Windows machine into Firefox on an Apple. I do not want to use Safari. How do I do this?
I have, on my HP laptop, running XP Pro, using Firefox 4.0, went under bookmarks to show all bookmarks. A window opens up that says library. I then go to import and back up, and I choose export HTML. I then move this file over to my new Mac Pro. On my Mac Pro I also have Firefox 4.0. I go up under bookmarks, show all bookmarks, import HTML. It lets me browse and I find the file on the desktop, I select it then nothing happens. I am not interested in using Safari. I would like to continue using Firefox. However, as an experiment, I followed the same process except on my Apple computer I opened up Safari and tried to import in the Firefox bookmarks. It came up with an error saying the file could not be accessed. I then thought perhaps the file got corrupted, so I went back to my Windows Firefox and re-exported the bookmarks again. Same problem. So, am I creating the bookmarks incorrectly on my Windows machine?
    Thanks,
    Kent

Probably your Mac cannot understand the Windows html format, please try the following to see if it helps:
In your PC, export the bookmarks in html as you did in your post. After you have saved it, change the name of the file to “bookmarks.html” and save it again.
In your Mac, import the saved file as you posted.

  • PSE-10 how do I import and copy from external hard drive into organizer

Can I import and copy from external hard drive into organizer? Under Get Photos, I select import  from folders/files but after browsing to the external hard drive the copy option is disabled/greyed out. I there a method to import and copy?

That would be mounted as an internal drive and hence the corresponding option is not checked during Import.
Once you import the media form this drive, you can select all and go for File >> Copy/Move files option and copy them wherever you want to.
    Hope this helps
    Thanks

  • I can't import my favorites from FF on Windows XP hard drive because it can't see the Favorites HTML file.

My old computer was windows XP and I had a second, larger hard drive with Ubuntu on it. My computer crashed because of the motherboard. I had both hard drives moved to a newer computer (motherboard from 2006) and computer could not boot to windows. It's now booted to the Ubuntu drive and I can access my old info on the windows XP drive. I would like to import my favorites from FF on my windows XP drive to my FF on my Ubuntu drive but "import data from another browser" doesn't find anything because it's looking on my Ubunto drive not my windows XP drive. I tried creating an HTML document of my favorites on the windows drive but when trying to import the HTML file of my favorites on Ubuntu, it can't see it...but Dolphin can see the HTML file I created.

Did you use Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks > Import & Backup > Import HTML ?
Does the HTML backup have a .html file extension?

Can someone tell me how to import a photo from my iPhoto library into Photo Shop Elements 11.  When I am in Photo Shop Elements and I go to import the only option is to import from a camera.  I want to import a photo from iPhoto.  If I can't figure this out Photo Shop Elements is totally useless to me.

Not sure what you are trying to do
If you want to use PSE as an editor for iPhoto then set it in the iPhoto preferences (you need to search the forums for the exact settings - they are not obvious)
The general answer to yoru question is to import a photo form iPhoto to  any other program is to select the photo in iPhoto and export to the desktop and import from there
Please explain what it is taht you want to do

  • Can I import my favorites from Lunascape?

Before I switched to Firefox, I was using Lunascape. I am wondering if there is any way for me to import my favorites list from there to Firefox. I was able to import my favorites from Internet Explorer, however, I'd also like to transfer my favorites from that browser as well.

Look in the File menu for an import / export menu item ''(all the web browsers I have ever used had it there)'' and export your Favorites to a file in HTM or HtML format.
    ''then in Firefox:''
Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks -> Import & Backup - Import HTML... = From HTML file
