Importing Vector Files

Hello everyone!
I would like to know what is the best way to import vector type files into a comp?
I have already tried importing .ai (Adobe Illustrator) files, but they act like regular .jpg files: when you scale them - you get pixelated edges.
Any suggestions? Any comments?
Your thoughts would be a great help.
Cheers,

Quite likely, but this assumes much I was not willing to presume.

  • Objects look like bitmaps when importing vector files

    Hello,
I am absolute beginner with ID CS5. I am going trough a bunch of tutorials, and there is one thing I cannot solve.
When I am importing vector file content (Illustrator CS5 file with vector objects - strokes) into InDesign frame,
imported object looks like low resolution bitmap. What am I doing wrong? Is there any option I should enable or disable
to have imported objects in vector format?
    Thanks in advance for answers,
    Best Regards,
    Mi

Yup! Try View -> Display Performace -> High Quality. InDesign substitutes low-res previews when you're in Standard display mode. (And ID tends to run a great deal faster when it's not rendering print-res images, so you're probably best off working in Standard mode unless you have a monster of a desktop machine, or unless your work requires that you see the high-res image while you're doing other tasks in ID.)

  • Best way to import vector files?

What is the best way to import .AI and .EPS files? Is File > Import the way to go or is there another way in CS5?
    Thanks.

If you want to place the vector file within an existing file then import is the way to go, if you want to open it in a new window then open will do that. In either instance you will still get the Vector File Options dialog box that allows you to make some modifications while importing/opening the file.

  • Importing vector files into FCP

Hi all. I have a 720x480 project in which I need to import vector logos and titles. How do I best bring those files into an SD formatted project without it rasterizing? As always, thanks.

    Hi -
I do not believe you can use vector based imported graphics in FCP. The FCP site list the following file types are acceptable graphic formats, but I believe all PSD layers need to be rasterized before importation:
I usually rasterize the graphic at least twice the frame size of the sequence I am working in then scale the graphic accordingly once on the timeline.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to Import Vector Identified Files into Photoshop Without Losing Quality

    Hello,
I am creating a series of music worksheets on photoshop. I have created some music scores in a music writing software called Sibelius 7. It has the capability to export the sheet music graphics in the following forms: .pdf, .eps, .bmp, .tiff, .png, .svg .
However, I have tried to 'place' each of them into my photoshop file to see which one will work. But on saving the photoshop document as a .pdf with any of the graphics formats, the vector quality of the image has been lost, as it pixelates on zooming in. I have also tried to import an .svg file into adobe illustrator to save it as an .ai file and then import that into photoshop, but the image is again pixelated.
I don't really know what is happening, as I am essentially trying to import a file that is a vector (or at least does not pixelate on zooming) into photoshop, hoping for the same qualities to be retained, but it is being lost for some reason.
    What should I do?
    Thank you.

Thank you for your reply. I opened the vectored pdf into illustrator. I tested illustrator by saving that document as a new pdf and the vector quality was still retained. I the following images, I copied and pasted the vector from illustrator into photoshop. However, on saving this new photoshop document as a pdf, it does not retain the vector format, as you can see with the pixelation that occurs when zooming in on an object.
    Thank you.

  • Trouble Importing Illustrator/PDF/Vector File

I was working on a composition within After Effects and I was having no issues importing Illustrator files.  Suddenly it started importing them as something weird?  I'm sure I accidentally hit something to change the settings but I can't figure it out.  Here's a screen shot of my imported files on the left.  The top two on the were suppose to be like the rest of the Illustrator files below them.
Here's a link to my screen shot, notice how it's saying it's a Vector Art Sequence now and not just Vector Art.  It's only putting it on about 10 frames when I drop it in the comp and it's pulling random info from my other files.
    Any help would be appreciated.

But you must somehow have enabled sequence import... This is not coming out of nowhere, so please double check again. Also simply consider naming your files differently from jut numbering thme sequentially to break out of this cycle. If it is truly a bug in the format handling (which I doubt), that would be pretty much the only option, anyway.

  • Is there a way to import a vector file into Ideas? Not just a photo layer

I want to import an Illustrator vector file into a drawing layer in Adobe Ideas, not just the photo layer.
Seems like it should be a basic option for Ideas and the cloud. (Have the latest ipad etc in case technical issues matter).
Any answers here, or do I need to try another app like inkpad or sketchbook pro? I'm trying to stay inside the Adobe corral if possible. Just for convenience's sake...
    Thanks

    Hi Mk111111,
I'm not finding a way to import vector info from Illustrator as a drawing layer into Ideas. So I don't believe this currently possible. It is possible to go the other way, from Adobe Ideas into Illustrator.
I created a feature request based on your suggestion here:

  • Any way to compress or simplify imported PDF file made with autocad ?

    Hello guys
I'm working on some layouts for property developer, and the architect who prepare all the floor plans, elevations etc... gave me bunch of PDF files, which I find really hard to use.
These are vector files, fairly small, from 500kb to 1mb, but despite their simple look, they are extremly complex and made of huge number of vectors.
Every single line is made of tens separate lines. To help you visualize, try to imagine 5cm stright line made of 2mm segments. It's very hard to select anything as it takes millions
of clicks just to clear small parts I don't need. Even a DOT in text content (project description and layout info) is made of 6 to 10 tiny vectors.
Secondly, there are millions of cliping masks. Whenever I select something to delete, I keep clearing unrelated parts of the drawing in totally different locations. I select tiny line
at the bottom of the elevation, and somewhere on top a tiny part of window will disapear... Releasing the cleaping masks is very time consuming...
My question is, can I import that PDF and export in some way to simplyfi, combine and minimize the number of vectors, the reimport the file to AI so it's more friendly to work with?
This has been wasting so much of my time, it's driving me crazy, top that, I have really well powered machine that handles files mach larger with ease, but it become barely usable
when I open these vector based PDFs. I single scroll or zoom in/out takes 30 to 50 seconds to refresh...
These files are killing me, please help
thank you for taking the time to read and sincerely hope you can share your expertise.
    best regards
    Mona

When I have no other option, I convert CAD drawings to high-res images and use PS or another image editor to remove unwanted items. This is usually fast and unobtrusive to the client.
This all is far faster and easier to do in another CAD application. When I can, I have requested either subsets of the original DWGs or DXFs because because my work--hence what I will bill out--is far faster with the originals. Then the cleaned up versions are PDF'd  for placement.
If I have to leave the drawings as vector and cannot obtain WG or DXF versions, I load them separately in Illy and en masse deleted as much as possible to get past the worse of the sluggishness. I join as many of the lines as possible and group sections. I do a few Save As along the way to dump undo.
    Take care, Mike

Freehand can't convert EPS files into editable vectors. I
    usually run
EPS files through Illustrator and then into Frehand. If you
    don't have
Illustrator you can convert the EPS into a PDF and that
    Freehand will

    involve a lot
more clean up than going through Illustrator.)

  • What are my options for opening EPS files in Elements 13? What is the best way to convert these to another type of vector file?

I "upgraded" from Photoshop Elements... uh... mad old... to Elements 13 when my work computer got "upgraded" to Win8. Now I can't open EPS files which is how I receive collateral from our ad agency. What other vector files will work, and how can I convert EPS to these? Please be gentle if this is a stupid question - I know enough to be dangerous, but I'm not an expert at design by any means. I'm just frustrated because this isn't quite the "dead" file type that Adobe thinks it is. What was the point of upgrading if I'm pretty much left in the lurch?
Thanks to any and all who can help! Much appreciated . -ASI

What's important to understand is that Elements is a 'pixel' editor, not a 'vector' editor. As such, it has very limited 'vector' capacity (fonts, shapes...) What you are missing from older versions is the ability to convert vector items to standard pixel image file. To be able to open and work on eps files, you'd need Adobe Illustrator, which seems overkill for your purpose.
    So, your options are:
    - to request your ad agency to supply pdf format images instead of eps ones. My guess is that eps is beeing largely superseded by pdf, but I am not sure...
    - Use external tools to convert from eps to jpeg; a Google search would return free softwares like Irfanview or web based conversion.
    - You might want to keep (or reinstall) older Elements versions just for that purpose.

  • Import error when importing .psd file created in Photoshop CS3

I have a file that was created in Photoshop CS3. I am trying to import this file into Catalyst CS5, but I keep getting an input error. I created a file in Photoshop CS5 and I was able to import this .psd file successfully into catalyst. So I guess my question is this; Does Catalyst support .psd files created in Photoshop CS5 only? If this is the case, how can I convert the CS3 .psd to a CS5 .psd

I am now building my files using photoshop CS5. A few challenges I have experienced while trying to import into Catalyst:
    - If I do a straight import into Catalyst, I loose all my colors in Catalyst. That is, catalyst imports all my vectors without any of the colors I had in Photoshop. My understanding is that Catalyst has libraries to support Photoshop files, so your import from Photoshop should not look any different in Catalyst.
Work Around: I have had to rasterize / merged all my image layers for the different components I have built in Photoshop CS5. Then when I start the import process I click the Advanced button on the catalyst import dialog. From the advanced dialog, I have to flatten (to bitmap) all the images I intend to import.
This process takes about two hours because I have a lot of components on the page.
Is there something  I'm not doing right here? I'm not seeing the value add to Catalyst, if it's taking me this long to just import .psd files

  • Motion 3 and animating vector files using match move

I'm having trouble animating a vector file using MatchMove. The problem is the vector file (Ai file exported as PDF and imported into Motion3) becomes rasterized when is moves. I have Fixed resolution unchecked and i changed the Pixel Aspect Ratio to NTSC from Square. Nothing seems to help. I even recreated the vectore file in Motion using the bezier tool and got the same results. What am I doing wrong on this?

Could you post the project with your Motion shape? I don't have a problem using the Match Move behavior with vector graphics.
Is the vector graphic in it's own group? Does that group have a box around the status icon in the name? If it does, then the group is being rasterized for some reason.
You can look through the groups parameters to find the one that has a blue dot next to it. This will be the parameter causing the rasterization.
That's the only thing I can think of right now that could be causing your problem.

  • Import EPS files? Plugin?

I can export EPS to maintain vector data, but can I import EPS files, while maintaining vector data?
If not, is there any way to open vector data in Photoshop?
    A plug-in?

Photoshop cannot import the paths in general.  If you copy paths from Illustrator and paste them into Photoshop, we can convert the AICB data to Photoshop paths.  If you place or open a file, Photoshop can't do that (it can't handle general case EPS or PDF paths).
But placing an EPS or PDF file will retain the vector nature, so you can resize, rotate, color convert, etc. the content without losing the vector quality.  That was added with the Smart Objects feature a while back.

  • After Effects Import Vector Continuously Rasterize not working

    Hello.
I'm trying to import a vector into After Effects and it's not working the way I need. Yes I have Continuously Rasterize turned on. No the original Illustrator file does not have any effects on it. I've tried png, eps, psd, and ai files. Same issue.
    1. This is what the original AI vector file looks like:
    2. This is what it looks like in AE with Continuously Rasterize turned on, zoomed in at 400%. It's crappy.
    3. And this is what it looks like in AE zoomed in at 100%, but I've scaled the image up to about 200%.
But I can't use the huge scale vector for my project because it is too big for my comp. Can somebody help? My brain hurts.
I do realize that it looks crappy within the AE viewer, but even after I export it in HD, it still looks crappy.
Basically, I just want a nice clean final picture to look good in my comp.
Hey thanks for anybody who can help. Huge karma waves coming your way.

When posting questions like this just a screenshot of the result is almost useless in diagnosing the problem. A better screenshot would include the Comp Window and timeline with the layer in question selected and all the changed properties revealed by pressing the U key twice. Also, since this was an imported file that is in question, if the footage item is selected in the Project panel then we can get an idea of the format, size, and other properties of the original file that may be causing problems.
You should not have to buy anything to get properly created vector files ti work perfectly in your composition. When you said zoomed in at 400%, if you meant scale factor and not scale of the layer then the behavior is normal, expected, and exactly what should be happening. Zoom Factor set to 400% means the comp window is using 16 screen pixels for every comp pixel. Zoom Factor set to 1600% means a single image pixel is displayed as a 16 X 16 block of screen pixels - so things are going to look pixelated when they are not. The only way to judge quality is to look at the composition window with the Zoom factor set to 100%. This is exactly the way Photoshop works.
Here's what I mean. A single Illustrator layer selected, scaled to 5174% and perfectly rasterized in a comp with the Zoom Factor at 100% scale. Note the layer size in the project panel. Everything we need to know to diagnose a problem.
