Importing very large itunes library from Leopard to 10.8.5

My Power Mac G5 tower of 12 years, died. RIP O'le buddy, you served me well.
I extracted all the drives as well as the external drives, and all the data is intact.
On my old Leopard System I was running the latest version of iTunes for Leopard, and I had my iTunes Library on a seperate 1TB volume called Media Library, which is 100% intact, and also backed up.
Upon the death of my G5, I have a new Mac Mini running 10.8.5.
I tried configuring the new iTunes to point to the old iTunes folder on the media drive, but it does not see any of the old Leopard content.
What am I doing wrong? How do I get the New iTunes to read & convert the old Leopard iTunes library.
Any help is appreciated.

All of my content was imported.
One small problem did occur. Many of my TV show episodes showed up as seperate individual movies.
It will take me a bit of time to get them sorted out again, but most of the work has been done.

Looking to publish my VERY LARGE iTunes library on the web

Can someone recommend a way of publishing a large iTunes library (currently 62,373 tracks and growing quickly) to the web? There doesn't seem to be an easy way to do this. I have printed my library to .PDF, but I can't convert the .PDF to MS Excel as the file contains more than the 65K line limit in Excel. Exporting my list to .XML won't open in Excel for the same reason, too many lines.
My ultimate goal is to make my iTunes library searchable on the web for people to browse and select tracks for their events. I don't need them linked to iTunes for purchase, nor do I want the music on the web. I only want to create a database for web searching the Albums, Artists, Song Title, Genre, and Song length. I would also like the iTunes artwork to be included.

Copy the entire _iTunes folder_ , not just the iTunes music folder.
When you have everything ready on teh new internal, you can do 2 things.
1 - Copy the entire iTunes folder back to the internal.
2 - Leave it on the external, start iTunes holding the Option key and select *Choose existing library*. Select the *iTune library* file in the iTunes folder on the external.
iTunes will simply now use this for everything.

Ok, so I actually have multiple libraries (from itouch, nano, ipod) and I want to import the library from my old pc to work on my Mac.
However, I only want it to work from my external hard drive, I do not want it to take any space in my Mac's SSD .
The one thing that you have to know though is:
Although I have some, a lot of my mp3s are not in my itunes media folder. However, the music is in the library itself, the one in XML and ITL format.
So, I know that had all my music been in the media folder, I could have easily added library and selected that folder, but in this case, I don't think it will work.
How do I import my library with my music if the media folder does not have all my songs?
I had exported my library from my old laptop so I just have the library not my songs in mp3 format :/ if this makes sense..

All your library consists of is a text file telling iTunes which files it should include in its listing. It doesn't have your music. Your music is in the files scattered around your computer in your case. You need to do the long process below, first consolidating, then moving the complete library (= the whole iTunes folder):
Quick answer (not for you) if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
Longer answers if for any reason you do not think all library files are inside your iTunes folder (changed preferences settings at some point):

How do I import a large Aperture library from an external disk?

I have a large Aperture library, about 110GB of photos, it currently resides on an external USB3 drive for space reasons. I'd like to migrate this into Photos, but every time I try I get an error: "There is not enough disk space to migrate your library. It is estimated that you need at least 21GB of additional free space."
From finder, if I get info on my Mac's main drive, it says I have 297.51 GB available, and on disk, my Aperture library is 105.8 GB. There is almost 3x as much space available as I should need!? And after the first time I tried this I freed up an additional 30 GB of space and still received the same message, still claiming to need 21 GB of space.
My drive has FileVault enabled, would that matter?

I experienced the exact same problem. I have a iPhoto Library in another volume (or partition) with very small free space, while main/system partition (Macintosh HD) has big enough free space.
Turned out, the one that should have big free space is the volume/partition that contains original iPhoto Library (to import from), not the system partition. So, I freed up some space, reopen Photos app (while holding Alt key), and select the iPhoto Library to import. It works!

Suggestions for a VERY large iTunes library?

My iTunes library is far too large to be practical to keep on my MacBook Pro's internal hard drive. I bought a nice, big external hard drive with the thought that I would put my iTunes library on that drive, attach the drive to my old flat-panel G4 iMac, and use that library over the network from my MacBook Pro.
That's not working very well -- it's just WAY too slow. I get the spinning beach ball every time I try to navigate the library, go to the beginning of a track or skip a track, and so on, and so I'm looking either for ways to speed up the network (which is an AirPort Extreme network with two AirPort Express routers and the iMac hooked up via an Ethernet hub to one of them) or do something else with my music library.
For those with similarly large music libraries, what do you do?

I am wondering what is the best way to merge a very large iphoto library (from my MBP) to my new iMac (which has a few hundred photos on it now), and then upgrade to Aperture?

I have about 50GB of photos on my old MBP iphoto library.
I have a new iMac with a few hundred photos that I've uploaded since I bought it last December.
The iMac is where I want to keep everything stored as my main photo library, and manage it with a new Aperture installation.
Before I go and do this, and possibly muck it all up,
I would like to figure out the proper steps.
I am not too familiar with how to transfer files in the first place, so any help for a beginner would be much appreciated.
Starting from how to safely move the files from the MBP to the iMac, if anyone could walk me through this process.
I've been searching around but I have a specific goal (with getting everything into Aperture) so I don't want to get crossed up.

I have about 50GB of photos on my old MBP iphoto library.
To be able to merge your libraries, your Aperture version and iPhoto version must match. For basic reading see: Aperture 3.3: Using a unified photo library with iPhoto and Aperture

Assuming you are running the latest Aperture and iPhoto versions:
Before merging libraries ensure that your iPhoto Library has no issues. While still on your old mac run the "library first aid tools" on your iPhoto Library. Hold down the key combination ⌥⌘ and double click your iPhoto Library, then select "Repair database".
Make sure you have a backup of your current Aperture Library and iPhoto library.
Do both macs have a FireWire port? Then you could connect your macs in Target Disk Mode:

This way your new mac could see your old mac as an external disk and you could copy directly between the macs.
Otherwise copy your iPhoto library by drag-and-drop to an external disk (on your old mac) and connect that disk to your new mac. Check, if the external drive is formatted for mac (MacOS X Extended (Journaled)). Otherwise reformat it, before you copy the iPhoto library to that drive.
When your iPhoto Library has been moved to your new Mac launch Aperture and use the command "File > Import > Library" from the main menu bar. If there are duplicates in the Aperture library (if you imported earlier from iPhoto) you may be prompted if you want to "Add" or "Merge". If you have lots of duplicates, pick "Merge", otherwise "Add".

How do i import a large organised library from NAS into iPhoto without it re-organising my photos?

I have a large library of photos, (20,000 or so photos - 58 GB) stored on my NAS Drive, they are organised into yearly folders, and then individual event folders, among other folders such as 'favorites'. When i click import, and leave it to do its thing, will it re-rganise my photos on the NAS or leave them as they are and simply index them? (i have unchecked the 'copy photo's to iphoto library') Hope somebody can give me an answer.

It will index them as a Referenced Library but I strongly urge you not to do this when you have the Library on one volume and the photos on another.
iPhoto uses a very simple tool for workign with Referenced Libraries: Aliases. Aliases are perfectly good when the Library and the photo are on the same volume - the alias will track when the original moves and so on. However, if anything changes in the path to a file on another volume the alias will break, and you'll have to repair it manually. Now what happens if the path to the NAS changes... Like if you upgrade your machine, move the files on the NAS or on to another one? You'll find yourself repairing the aliases for everyone of these 20k photos, manually, one by one.
Iphoto is not the app for you if you want to do this. You can't put the library on the NAS (because the NAS is not an appropriate disk format for it). Aperture has no problems with this kind of set up.
There is a broader principle there though: If you use apps like iPhoto, Aperture, LIghtoom, how you organise the files on the disk is not important. It's just storage. You never access the files via the Finder or File Browser. You do every thing via the app - whether it be iPhoto, LR or Aperture. The point of these apps is tht you organise in the Applications, not on the HD.

Optimal arrangement for maintaining a very large iTunes Library

My wife buys tons of television shows on iTunes, watches them on business trips on her iPhone and then moves on. So far our system has been this.
- Mac computer stationary at the office desk with iTunes for syncing phones and downloading apps, etc.
- Periodically rsync library to a Linux box and backup the Mac with Time Machine
Recently my wife decided she wanted to swap the Mac Mini that was there for a MacBook Pro that she could take to the couch. This way she could surf for TV shows and movies, make playlists, dock it, sync it up and go on.
There's one problem to this, though. If she buys a ton of TV shows and goes on long business trips (as she has recently), she can fill the entire MacBook Pro hard drive, thus rendering syncing impossible. We thought about each maintaining our own libraries, syncing these with each other using Home Sharing and backing them both up to the Linux box. This could work except we'd like to share playlists and those don't sync over Home Sharing.
Long story short we're trying to come up with a setup where she can still easily manipulate the machine that we'll sync with while also somehow giving that machine some breathing room. I haven't yet come up with an arrangement I'm happy with. Am I missing something?
Also, I have definitely considered taking the aforementioned Linux box and putting Windows on it, adding some RAM and using that as the main iTunes box. My experience with iTunes on Windows, however, is that it's very slow.

How to limit the music downloaded from a large iTunes library loading on iPad to minimize space usage?

I'm having trouble with my iPad 2 iTunes Match loading all of the music from my very large iTunes library off my Pc to my iPad. I really only want a few playlists. Do I have to delete all of the music off my iPad that I don't want? Will it remove those songs from my main library if I'm connected to iCloud and music match? Help!

Move the itunes Library.itl file to your exHD.
Then to get itunes to start using it from that new location, press *and hold* the shift key while starting itunes. Choose "use existing library" and browse out to the ITL file that is now on the exHD.
Future app downloads will go to the Mobile Applications folder created there. It will also start downloading the itunes store artwork to the exHD.
You can try downloading a free app to test it.

Import iTunes Library from External Drive to New Computer with Vista

I can't seem to "import" my entire iTunes library from my external hard drive to my new computer. However, I can import songs one-by-one. There must be a way to transfer the whole file at once but it is beyond me. Anyone have a solution?

Hi I am new and have found a way to import Files & Folders over my home network and or other drives.
Start in File, click "Add File to Library", or "Add Folder to Library". In the “look in” dropdown window, locate the File or folder and double click on it. It should begin to transfer. I have never transferred an enter library though.
On a personal note,
I have come to realize that I can only transfer iTunes music. I can not transfer or even find the music that I have installed from a CD into my iTunes library. iTunes dose recognize even the folder that such music is in. If any of you have an answer to this problem let me know.

I'm still having some trouble, can someone give me guidance? Here is what I did:
1. Connected old mac (PowerBook G4) to new mac (MacBook Pro) via firewire 800 and target mode.
2. Located "iTunes Music" folder on old Mac and pulled the entire folder into "iTunes Music" on the new Mac.
3. I restarted.
4. iTunes didn't find the new music, it does find the one song I've purchased using the new Mac. I think this makes sense, because now the folder structure has an embedded "iTunes Music" folder (from the old Mac) in my new mac's "iTunes Music" folder. The structure looks like:
-iTunes Music
----[folder for the one song I've purchased on the new mac]
----iTunes Music (this is the folder from the old mac)
---------[folders of music from the old mac]
5. So I went into the iTunes Music folder I just imported, selected all the music, and copied it one level up.
6. The result is on my new mac, my "iTunes Music" folder now contains all the music from the old mac, plus the one song I've puchased using the new mac.
7. I restarted my new mac. Restarted iTunes, but still the only song that's recognized is the one I've already purchased. The others aren't showing.
8. I've gone into preferences/advanced and confirmed I'm pointing at the right target folder.
Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong here?

Suggestions for large iTunes library?

I have a very large iTunes library (110G) on an external drive, which I use only occasionally. The rest of the time, I use a smaller on on my MacBook.
When I want to use the large one, which I usually do via Airport, it can take hours to update itself. The "Genius" for example, can take hours just by itself... Then it does something for "gapless playback" or something...
Why does it need to do all of this stuff, and why does it take so long? Is all of this updating done on the external drive so it won't have to be updated again from another computer? (so, for example, if my wife opens that library from her computer.)
Or does anyone have tips for managing a large iTunes library that is only used infrequently?

I called Apple Support about dead tracks issue, and the 1st guy told me I SHOULD split them up, but that caused issues and I called back and the 2nd guy told me NOT to do that, so I've left them all on the external drive. The 2nd guy seemed more knowledgeable than the 1st guy.
I was hoping you weren't going to say that. My thought was that the library needed to be on the machine with the music so that multiple libraries on different machines weren't trying to manage the same music. So much for that theory.
This being the case, it would be interesting to see how it behaves if the library lives on your macbook.
This experiment would be easy and risk free:
Option into "create a new library" and create this new library in your music folder on your macbook.
While in this blank library go to the advanced preference tab and deselect "Copy files to the itunes media folder.....)
Then, from the itunes file menu browse to the music folder on the external drive and select it.
This will build a library that lives on your machine while the music files continue to live on the external.
This experiment is only worthwhile if you are sure that the library database for the music on the external drive lives on that external drive.
The risk with having the library live on your machine is that another library on another machine might also try to manage this music (your wife's machine for example) potentially causing a mismatch between your library and the music folder.

How can I transfer my whole iTunes library from a PC to another without losing any information?

Hi, I have a very large iTunes library which is the result of so many years of listening to music. Although my computer is pretty old and slow and I would like to buy me another one. However, I cannot risk losing all the playcounts, ratings and information that I've been adding through all these years and the "Home Sharing" feature doesn't keep it (more specifically, erases all the ratings and playcounts). So, I would appreciate any advice on how could you do it.
I've read that if you click on "Export library" and then modify it with a text editor changing the location of the main folders it would be a way, but as I said my computer is pretty old and ran out of memory a couple of years ago, and I have like thousands of songs that with this system I should change it manually one by one, and that would take me weeks to do it. There has to be an easier way!
