Importing VHS tape from VCR into iMovie

I'm trying to find out if it is possible to connect a VCR to my iMac and import the content from a VHS tape into iMovie in a similar way to connecting a camcorder to the iMac.
Thanks in advance.

Welcome to Apple discussions!!
I have done lots of this.
To get your VHS video into iMovie, look at the Grassvally ADVC300. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 (I have used it a few times with iMovie 09 also).
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).
http://www.grassvalley.com/products/advc300
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11, why?
iMovie 09/11 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.
If your primary workflow is editing DV clips and making DVDs, iMovie '06 is better suited. Your movie will arrive at iDVD in DV format, which is an ideal match for making a DVD: same resolution, same pixels aspect ratio, and original quality. If you share your movie from iMovie 09/11, it gets re-rendered at 640x480 or less, and then iDVD upscales it back to 720x480. The end result is obviously not as good.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 09 is a "lossless" combination.

  • Import VHS Tape from VCR

    Hi all,
I have some old family tapes on vhs to import imto the mac.
in the past I used a canopus and imported to quicktime 7 with h.264 and all was good - but now it seems as though QT 7 is broken and won't import more than a few minutes
    https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=quicktime+7+maximum+duratio n&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
Basically I want to just do some basic clean up after then save them as h.264 for archiving
So what is the best way to import these videos now?
IMovie or final cut pro or Adobe premier or another app (I'm not very good at final cut or adobe)?

Use the Canopus to import into iMovie.

  • Converting VHS tapes from VCR into iDVD

What is the easiest way to hook up a VCR to my iMac G5 and copy VHS video tapes to DVD. I am looking for the least expensive option. I only have a few VHS tapes that I need copied to DVD and do not want to spend a lot of money on equipment. I only have an standard VCR that hooks to a TV. Any help on this subject will be much appreciated. Thank you.

    Hi a
or buy an analog to digital converting box like a Canopus.
I've got a Canopus ADVC 300 but there are cheaper like the
Canopus ADVC 55. But there are a lot of other brands to
    consider.

  • Hello  converting vhs tape to go into imovie - gooood audio important!

    Hello
I need to convert a vhs tape to play in imovie for a client,
it's for voiceover work website - so crisp clear audio is crucial.
not sure what to tell customer service person at vhs conversion store.
    Help please!!
    thnx

    Hi
Concider the cost and the cost of an A/D-box to do the conversion by Your self.
I use an rather expencive one but get Audio and Video as good as is possibly (I think)
I use an Canopus ADVC-300 (Now Grass Valley ADVC-300) - This has some vital features
    • Timecode correction = less baby sitting even if drop-outs on VHS-tape
    • Picture enhanzing
    • Audio stays in sync. even if tape is in LP-mode eg 8 hour and got drop outs
Yours very happy to do this at own speed and full control.
If I'd use a store to do it I would like to have material back on miniDV tapes
and as streamingDV (as recorded by miniDV Camera).
If result is to be a new DVD then I also would not use iMovie'08 to 11 but
    • iMovie up to HD6 - or -
    • FinalCut (any version)
This to keep picture quality as close to 100% as possibly.

  • How do you import movie projects from Facebook into iMovie on an iMac?

I have an edited movie project that was 17 mins long on my mini iPad. Because it was over 15 mins long I couldn't share it into iMovie theatre on my mini iPad. So my father suggested to share it to Facebook where (we thought) we could download it from there into iMovie on my iMac. But it didn't work. I put the link onto to my desktop, and from there, I tried to to add the link into an iMovie video tab but a little window cam up and said(and I quote): "This file will not be imported. It is not compatible with iMovie."
    So...
    HELP!
HOW DO YOU MAKE MY MOVIE PROJECT COMPATIBLE WITH IMOVIE?????

Thanks for getting back with me so promptly.  It has taken me this time to connect with the proper people to find out the information you requested.
The camera used to film the class was a Panasonic AG-HMC40P, owned by a local cable TV station; they use Kodak video encoding software, and a SD card was used to store the video.   The file extension is .mts, and the mime file is MPEG 2 transport.  He said I probably need an AVCHD converter, and the Mac app store lists 8 of those options, 4 free and 4 for up to $9.99.  He said I'll also need a converter for later plans of posting on YouTube or on the website, and while some of those in the app store might work for the later needs, he knows one app called "Compressor" that would work for the uploading later.  He also suggested I could try renaming the .mts file to .MP2T, but he wasn't sure that would work.
They don't work with Macs at the studio, but I had thought I could have some lessons there in editing, and apply what I learned to my iMac and iMovie.
First, though, I have to be able to see it and review it!
    Thanks again!

  • Import VHS Tapes to DVD and iMovie

I have many old VHS tapes I want to finally digitize so I don't lose them. Most are old football games, generally between 1-2 hours per tape. I am working off of a new iMac - 27inch 3.1gHz 1TB hard drive.
I want to do 2 things:
1 - Backup each tape to a high quality DVD for backup purposes - to be played in a DVD player
2 - Store lower quality versions on my iMac hard drive to be viewed/ edited/ possibly uploaded to YouTube or other web based video sites
I have iMovie, and would like the ability to edit if possible - nothing major, ading scores, dates, etc...and possibly manipulating video (cropping of scenes, etc...) but not much.
I have researched and found a few different options. Most threads I have read seem to indicate the need for one of the following:
    Canopus ADVC300
    Canopus ADVC55
    Elgato Eye TV Hybrid
I am willing to spend $100 - $200, but this I'd rather not go crazy. At a certain point it would just be easier to sed them away to be professionally archived to DVD.
    Any advice?

  • Importing RAW images from Aperture into iMovie

Hello.  I'm trying to create a slideshow using iMovie, but apparently it only imports jpeg format images.  Most of my photos are RAW images, and I can't seem to figure out a way to get iMovie to import jpeg versions.  Can anyone help?

  • Not authorized...cannot load songs from iTunes into iMovie

    Hello,
I was importing some songs from iTunes into iMovie, something I've always done and never had a problem with before, until this wknd. After I had loaded in the songs into my iMovie timeline, and they played just fine, I then started getting pop-up boxes with the msg. stating: "This computer is not authorized to play...mp4... If you purchased this song you can open iTunes and authorize this computer to play this song by entering your Apple ID password." I did indeed click on the link to authorize, and put in my password, and then when I tried loading the song again, I got another pop-up box w/an Error msg. What gives? I have never seen this before. I checked out the authorization on my computer in iTunes, and it did state that I am authorized (I am the only one who uses the computer). I read some of the posts, do I have to De-authorize, then authorize again? I just don't understand the problem. I even tried burning the songs I wanted onto a disc, then tried re-importing them to iTunes, and it was still the same problem! I thought the whole idea of iTunes was to be able to play them with a project.
Any suggestions would be most appreciated, thank you.

It is a bug that Apple is aware of and apparently working on. I think it is an iTunes bug since it seems to effect both iDVD and iMovie. See these for a few examples...

  • Importing VHS tape into iMovie.

I am importing VHS tapes into either imovie 09 or 06. When I play back in the program, it has good quality. But when I save it, no matter what format: mp4, .avi, .mov, etc. The quality is very poor when played back on DVD player.
Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?

Use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09.

consider usage of a diff. editor.. iMovieHD6, you're entitled for a free downlaod at apple.com:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
but IF you're relaxed, opened your mind, follow the bright light, ommmm.. for Events & Stuff:
your intended workflow will add another step of quality-degradition (8mm>>avi>>mp4>>iM08) ..
consider the free tool Mpeg Streamclip www.squared5.com for 'chopping' that 90min beast into pieces..
rename these new chunks, follow advice given on my site:

  • I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this?

I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this? I even tried deleting iMovie, bought a new copy and installed it, but the folder "iPhoto Videos" is still there and I can't get new clips loaded to iMovie, especially where I want them. Please help.

The iPhoto Videos do occasionally have problems. I've seen a lot of people write messages to this Discussion group describing similar problems. The only thing that seems to get around this problem is to pull the video clips out of iPhoto then import them directly into iMovie. Once the troubles with iPhoto Videos starts, I haven't yet seen anyone write back with something that they did to fix it.
The most difficult part of doing this is the movies in iPhoto might be a little difficult to track down. But you can create a smart alum that does that for you. Go to iPhoto > File Menu > New Smart Album:
Set the first pulldown menu to keyword, second to contains, then in the last box type Movie with a capital 'M'. Then click OK. This smart album more or less does as search of the whole iPhoto Library and only displays items that match your search tearm of "Movie" exactly. In that smart album then you can find the original Movies you want to move out of iPhoto and into iMovie, <CTRL> click on the Movie clip, then choose Reveal in Finder. That will jump you out of iPhoto temporarily and into the iPhoto Library folder. From there you can move that movie file to the desktop. Move all the clips you want, once they're all collected up go to iMovie and go to the File Menu > Import Files. Then point it to the desktop where you moved your video clips.
This will put all those videos into an Event folder in iMovie and bypass iPhoto Videos altogether.

  • Why does iMovie stop importing my tape from the camcorder even though it says it is still importing?

Why does iMovie stop importing my tape from the camcorder even though it says it is still importing?

It's difficult to be sure without doing some network packet sniffing, but if it were another app syncing, it would be an awful coincidence, since it seems to happen only while I'm in Reminders.app -- as soon as I click the home button and go back to the home screen, it stops; when I launch Reminders again, it starts again.
Moreover, it happens when I am not in the house, which rules out iTunes syncing.
Note that it's not the syncing spinner (i.e. two arrows chasing each other in a circle) -- it's the data access spinner (like the wait spinner in many apps and the apple.com search box).

  • Can't import quicktime movie made from Keynote into iMovie media browser

I've created a file in Keynote, exported it to quicktime and would like to import into iMovie. iMovie keeps giving me this error message: Unknown error: the file could not be imported. Can someone help?

Rarely am I able to solve my own problems, regardless of how much effort. But I did figure this one out, simply by trial and error. *To recap... I have created a sample slide show to use as a test run through Keynote (to get the best builds and transitions), to Quicktime Pro, into iMovie (to marry the features of iMovie with the Keynote slides) then back to Quicktime Pro as a final product.* It was a crash course with all 3 applications, so a huge learning curve for me.
Quicktime Kirk helped me successfully with my first go round with this. But with so many nested compression windows and so many combinations of choices, I eventually forgot which settings had worked correctly to give me the quality resolution that I had achieved the first time.
So I posted several messages asking for some clue where I was going wrong. Kirk did get back to me, but told me that I needed to create my project entirely without iMovie. Very frustrating because I knew I had done it before with iMovie.
After literally hours of analyzing all the working files and duplicating the exact settings I used before, two scenarios were happening. One, the end product had terrible resolution quality (not even close to the first time around). *Or two, when trying to import the first Quicktime file created from Keynote into iMovie, there was an error message saying that the file could not be imported*.
So, I eventually decided to try the following:
    *1. Create Keynote file*
*2. Export to QT with "Full Quality/Large" setting checked, and "Include Transparency" checked.*
*3. Open QT file to check quality. If acceptable, export this QT file as a QT file again using the highest quality settings - preferably ones that match the first export from Keynote to QT.*
*4. Open iMovie file and import this new QT file.*
*5. Do my thing with it.*
*6. Export (Share) iMovie file as a final QT file with "Full Quality" setting checked in the first pop-up compression window.*
This sequence proved to be successful with the same high quality resolution as the very first go round with it. I KNOW, though, that this wasn't the sequence I used the first time because I didn't do step 3.
I am just happy that I got what I needed. Now I can create my full presentation without worrying about the outcome in the end.
*Because I'm on a Mac, and the AIC default is used, my next feat is going to be identifying codec settings that are going to work both on Mac and PC (newer machines AND older machines).*
*So, does anyone have a clue how to do this?*
