Importing vhs via canopus 55

I am in the process of importing old vhs tapes via the canopus 55. The problem I am encountering is it is only importing in monochrome. Is there any way I can capture the colour?

Make sure your cables, especially the analog video cable, are good and are firmly seated.
Check the DIP switches on the ADVC-55. For PAL video, the settings should be:
SW1 = on (PAL)
SW2 = off (0 IRE, for PAL)
SW3 = on (0 db ... unless you audio is really low, then try SW3 = OFF)
SW4, 5 and 6 = off
Only change these switch settings when the ADVC is *powered OFF.* That includes passive power via the FW cable from the computer.
One other thing, if you are trying to copy VHS tapes that have Macrovision protection, the ADVC will not convert the video.

  • Import VHS via camera

    Hi all,
I'm trying to convert video from a VHS by running it through my camera into FCE, but it's not working. I seem to be following all the guidelines, but a message keeps coming up "“Waiting for Timecode. Device must be in VTR mode when Device Control is enabled”
    - My camera is in VTR mode and is properly connected to the VCR (audio and video cables plugged into the camera's jacks)
    - In Easy Setup, I've tried DV-PAL, and DV-PAL DV Converter
    - When I hit "Capture Now" while the video is playing, the error message comes up
Can someone run me through this? The annoying thing is that I've done it before and it worked fine when my Easy Setup was in DV PAL, I ran the video, and hit "Capture Now". Doing exactly the same now, with no luck. Any ideas?
    Many thanks,
    Andrew

    Hi Tom,
    - I'm using the Easy Setup: DV Pal–DV Converter.
    - The camera is connected to the computer by a Firewire cable and to the VCR by the yellow and white cables (the red one is redundant as my VCR only has one audio input).
    - The camera I'm using is a Sony PD170
    - My computer is a Dual 1.8G PowerMac with 3G of Ram, running OS10.4.11
    - I'm in Australia
When I'm in the Easy Setup: DV Pal-DV Converter, and click Apple = 8 to get into the Capture window, the screen immediately goes black and the error message comes up.
When I'm in the Easy Setup: DV Pal, and bring up the capture window, I see the message "No Communication". However, I've noticed that using this method I can click on Capture Now (unlike in the other Easy Setup) and the footage does capture. However, I can't use Device Control.
Hope that's enough to go on for you. I have checked the cables on another computer – they're fine.
Many thanks from one frustrated editor!

  • FCE HD (3.5.1) importing analog videotape via Canopus 110

I am new to all aspects of Final Cut Express and the Canopus 110 and need some serious help to capture video from VHS tape. I've followed (I think) all directions for the equipment and software, but I cannot get it to work -probably a simple solution, but I am stumped!
    +MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo, 4GB memory, OS X 10.5.8 & FCE 3.5.1+
    *Equipment Settings*
VHS Tape Deck is on (it does work)
S-video cable connects from VHS player "S-video Out" to Canopus 110 "S-video In"
Canopus ADVC110 - all DIP switches set to off, "Analog In" light is on
Firewire cable connects Canopus110 to MacBook Pro +(also providing power for device)+
Fantom Green Drive 1TB External Hard Drive attached to MBP via USB
    *Software Settings*
I have tried two different Easy Setup Choices
DV-NTSC DV Converter - this choice does not appear to work at all, unless I am missing something. This setting does not allow me to capture.
DV-NTSC - with this setting, it appears the devices are connected properly as FCE shows "VTR ok." Yet there are only bars with the note "preview disabled." I can theoretically capture data... but only a black screen is visible, no video.
I really need help. The movies were "taped" 20 years ago, but from film reels taken more than 50 years ago with an old movie camera. Obviously, I am not worried about sound at this time, but I must be able to capture the video stream in short clips that can be re-ordered. Given the age of the tapes, though, it is of primary importance that they simply be preserved.

Hello, and welcome to the Forum.
It appears you have the Canopus connected properly.
Exactly what model MacBook Pro do you have; and is the FireWire connection FW400 or FW800? What kind of cable are you using to connect your MBP to the Canopus box? (eg. 6-pin FW400 to 6-pin FW400, or 9-pin FW800 to 6-pin FW400, or something else? Is is a cable alone, or are you using some kind of FW400/800 adapter?) Do you have ANY other FireWire devices connected?
You should use the DV NTSC - DV Converter easy setup. When you use this easy setup you will only be able to use 'Capture Now'. Note: you do have to manually start your VCR playback.
Try shutting off everything, then power on your VHS deck & Canopus box. Then start your Mac. Then start FCE. At this point, does FCE 'see' your video in the Capture Now window?

  • I have been trying to import VHS video into iMovie via a Hollywood Dazzle bridge.  Did not have trouble until I upgraded to mavericks.  I have a mac book pro, 10.9.1, iMovie 10.0.2.  Says it is recording, but when I go to check, it says the file is empty.

I have been trying import VHS video into iMovie via a Hollywood Dazzle bridge.  I have been successful doing this in the past, but now it is not working.  I have a mac book pro, 10.9.1, (mavericks), iMovie 10.0.2.  Everything in iMovie looks like it is working.  It reads "recording" in the upper left hand corner of the pane while the video is playing.  When I stop the process to check on my clip it says that the file is empty.  The only thing that has changed since I did it successfully is that I upgraded to mavericks from whatever I had previously.  My system is about one year old.  Any suggestions?

    Hey, Clinton,
Thanks for your help!  I was able to go to iMovie 9.0.9 and import video.  I was still curious as to why it didn't work in version 10.0.2, so I contacted Apple tech support.  They were't sure at first as to why it wouldn't work, so they had me delete iMovie 10.0.2 and then re-install it just to see if something had gone wrong when it upgraded.  That didn't change anything.  In the end, they determined that 10.0.2 doesn't support the Hollywood Dazzle DV bridge.  But I have a workaround path from them that I will share so that it's possible to import to 9.0.9, then move it to 10.0.2.
         1.  Open iMovie 9 (finder/applications/iMovie 9.0.9
         2.  Import from Dazzle Bridge to iMovie 9, note which event you are importing the clips into
         3.  Close iMovie 9
         4.  Open iMovie 10 (probably in the dock)
         5.  File/Import Media...navigate to home(this was my name, on the left side of iMovie, under Favorites)/Movies/iMovie events.  Find the event folder that contains your Dazzle clips (tip-try sorting by date modified to look at recent events.)
         6.  Select the clips and import.  Click the blue "Import Selected" button on the bottom right.
You may get a message that some files cannot be imported.  Click continue import.  It's a little glitchy.  It imports your clip, and also makes a copy of it, too.  On the copy, the audio is normal, but the video is choppy.  In any case, you would delete the copy, anyway.
Hope this additional information helps somebody else.  Thanks again, Clinton for helping me!

  • Problem importing VHS on intel iMac

I import VHS into iMovie using a Canopus ADV C100 converter via Firewire. I used to import onto an iMac G5 no problem. Now I switched to a new iMac Intel. When I now preview the VHS tape there is no audio, although the audio is captured when I import.
But I really need the audio to work during preview.
Could this be related to the built-in camera? I noticed when
the converter is on and I open Photo Booth all I see is a green screen. When the converter is off, the camera works fine. Could the camera and converter be interfering with each other?
    Thanks for any help!

Another option would be to check your preferences in iMovie and uncheck "filter audio from camera".
this may be working overtime and removing all audio.

  • Importing VHS into iMovie

I just bought and hooked up a Canopus ADVC-110 between a TV/VCR combo and my computer. Several questions:
    1. When I first hooked up the canopus, the iMovie project I had been working on began displaying this message when I would open the project: " The camera you have connected is a different video standard from your project. You can edit but you will not be able to capture any new clips or export to camera". It didn't seem to affect importing digital video clips or still photos, so I just continued without worry.
    2. Now that I am TRYING to import VHS tape, when I am in my current project, nothing happens with I click the camera button and turn on my TV/VCR combo. I didn't know WHAT was wrong....until....
    3. I opened a new blank project. Suddenly, I could import video just fine. So I thought I'd try editing the clip in the blank project and then just copying it into my current project. When I tried that I got the following message: The DV file Clip is the wrong video standard and cannot be imported into this project. What is going on!?!?
    4. Lastly, I just noticed that at the top of my iMovie project it says the title and then says (PAL). Is that normal? Is that going to burn to a DVD okay? I thought North America had to be NTSC instead of PAL.
    thanks for any suggestions/advice!

I think there are small switches (DIP-switches) on the Canopus. Make sure the switches are set to NTSC.

  • Preferred input format with VHS via Canpous 55 to iMovie/Final Cut Express

I am using VHS deck to Canpus 55 to iMovie 08/MacBook Pro.
I do the input to iMovie 08 as it is less problematic for input than Final Cut Express and also I can share these with family for their video making in iMovie.
However I import the video files from iMovie events to FCE for editing.
    1. I notice the VHS-to Canopus-to iMovie are .dv files with frame size 720x480 and compressor file says DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, not Apple Intermediate Codec.
    2. I also import AVCHD files and those are frame size 960x540 and compressor is Apple Intermediate Codec.
When I bring the .dv files in from iMovie 08 to FCE, I sometimes get the warning about the files not in the standard settings and the drop down list of settings include Apple Intmediate Codec in various choices and the NTSC in various choices.
Should these be somehow standardized or will the eventual output be ok? I had one VHS 15 min segment look great on the computer in iMovie, then FCE but was very digitized after output to iDVD.
    Thanks for the help.

    ... and I also don't have Imovie.
    you do.
on the Installer Disks, your Mac came with, there's 'Installed software', which allows to install the iLife Package only.
for most of your needs, esp. being no professional editor , iM offers all you need:
    https://sites.google.com/site/karstenschluter/how-to-make-a-vidcast
shows you how to use pic-in-pic, green-sceen, integration of 'charts' and other 'effects' of iM, to produce a vidcast.
    -Subtitles
'Subtitles' is for me a switchable feature on DVD ... if you mean 'titles in lower third' - any editor offers this. what iM does NOT offer, is a free-locatable title (or e.g. logo-bug), but there's a simple workaround working with transparent pngs, see my site too ....-
-Split screen video. Half/Half or Full screen for one video source, and a tiny screen say on the top left of another source...
    side-by-side? iM no, FC yes.
-Export video in ipod compatible format
afaik, any Apple video-app allows that ..
    general advice:
    • iM is meant for consumers - convenient, but limited.
    • FC/e or /p is meant for (semi)professionals - what iM offers as a 'one click done'-solution, is a many-steps-process with some background-knowledge and understanding needed.
    • for sure, FC offers MUCH more options .. any option, you'll soon get lost
    • the learning curve for FC is steep! buy a book of master-mind TOM WOLSKY, who generously participates here at this board ...-
    • I don't see a need for you in spending 1.000$ more for the FC/pro suite ... Motion? Color? Compressor? Highly complex tools for even more complex processing ...
I would 'play' with iM to get familiar with your project - what do you need, how should it look? if you reach the limits, have a look at FC/e at any Apple-store ... if it doesn't scare you, get the app and the book, and spend some months studying ...
and Welcome misterdmmc to the  boards ...

  • Possible to import VHS?

New to imac and would like to get all my imports into imovie. How can I (if I can) import VHS and older model Sony camcorder tapes? The camcorder does not link up when plugged in.

To get your VHS video into iMovie, look at the Canopus ADVC300. Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 (not sure about iMovie 08).
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source and convert it to FireWire (iMovie 06 will treat it like a camera).

  • Import VHS through DSR-11 to FCP?

Hello. I have a DSR-11... can I import VHS by hooking up a VHS VCR to the 11 which is in turn connected to my Mac in FCP? I am not a techie and man, I just can't get this to work. If there is anyone out there who imports VHS this way... please advise. Thanks!

I myself prefer what Shane said about what David said, except I shall add a technical sidebar. you rally should have a TBC and a waveform/vector display if you're going to be investing in VHS-to-DV dubs via composite.
Overkill? Possibly. But correcting the levels and rebuilding for coherent timing will make your life much easier when you ingest the DV. Put some bars and tone on that tape!

  • Trouble capturing video from VHS via Analogue to DV converter

I use Final Cut Express 1.0.1 and I've always been able to capture video from VHS via a Director's Cut analogue to DV converter box. Today it keeps freezing on me. I've tried force quit, logged off and back on again and even re-started the computer. I've got plenty of space on my two hard drives (125GB free on main drive and 85.42GB on my scratch disk).
I'm sure I've set the rest up correctly (composite cable from VHS to DV convertor box set to output and connected to input slots on box, and DV box set to capture). The box is correctly connected to the Mac.
I've also logged on using another user's account to see if the same problem occurs, and it does. I believe this means that dumping the my preference file won't help, but please correct me if I'm wrong. Any ideas how to stop this freezing on me would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    Karen

Last bit of help from Martin may have some mileage in it as far as excluding hidden problems with the drive you are capturing too.
Have been reading into the requirements for the hard disc and it does make it clear having a separate one like you have is almost a requirement because of the work it does. Would it be worth trying a small capture to your system disc. If it helps that is how I am working at the moment so it doesn't appear to be instant fireworks if you do use this one but give it some thought first...
On the firewire port side of things I have seen some unexplained connection issues on this front which were cured by shutting things down, unplugging and then beginning again. Take it System Profile didn't yield anything?
Now I got back in front of my Mac it appears Quicktime Pro will allow capture from an attached device but appreciate you may not have the Pro bit, iMovie should be as good a test.
    Nick.

  • Importing VHS into iMovie - Communication Error

    Hi
I have just got a new iMac with iLife 08.
I am trying to import VHS tapes through a Canon camcorder into iMovie. I have done this many times before using Final Cut Pro on my old computer. My old FCP isn't compatible with OSX 10.5 so I have to use iMovie for the first time.
My problem is when I connect everything up, I get a 'communication error'. I can play the VHS and see it playing on the camcorder but it won't play on the import window in iMovie. i have tried importing it anyway and it does capture a couple of seconds and then stops.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks.

I have the same problem, used the info from the above link....
Live import workaround #2: Put a tape in the camcorder and put it into CAMERA mode. Launch iMovie HD 6.0.2 -- its import mode should show the live feed from the camcorder. Remove the tape -- iMovie HD should continue to show and import live feed from the camcorder. The drawback with this approach is that it produces wear and tear to the camcorder. If you keep the tape in the camcorder, it may also go into standby mode if the tape is paused.....
But then switch from camera to play (VCR) on my canon MV500i

  • Importing VHS tapes w/ADVC-300 help

Please help, I'm converting a large number of VHS tapes to DVD using a ADVC-300 Analog to Digital Converter and a Sony VCR. Everything imports fine but everytime the signal hits a break in the tape (the old VHS snowstorm) iMovie stops importing. Since most of these tapes were made by my mother in law, nearly every couple minutes there is a break in the tape and I have to constantly hit import to begin again after a break.
While I enjoy being glued to 45 VHS tapes of my wive's childhood, I rather set it and forget it! It might be a function of the ADVC-300 but I was hoping there is a way to configure iMovie to import till disk full or stopped regardless of the signal coming in.
    Thanks!

    Hi Tom
I have an ADVC 100. I've imported VHS video through a panisonic VCR snow and all with no problems into imovie 5. The problem could be with the VCR or the ADVC 300.
A possible work around could be to set the VCR to play the video through to a mini DV tape camcorder. It should record one continueous video on a single time code. Then you should be able to import directly to iMovie -- snow and all!
It's an extra step, but you don't have to baby sit the VCR.
    Good luck
    Carl

  • Importing VHS video through digital camera

I am importing VHS video through my Sony camera (TRV22) to imovie.  For some reason it the screen will go blue for a few seconds then the picture will come back.  I was doing this on a older power pc mac and imovie would just stop recording.  On my new imac it doesn't stop recording but the screen goes blue.    Has this happened to anyone else and maybe know what is causing it?  Should I try a different way of video transfer with some other software?  Thanks for any help you can give me.

    Two possible causes:
    Faulty or badly connected cables
    You are not using Firewire

  • Problem importing packages via ICE??

    Hello,
I am running Portal 6.0 on Windows Server. For one of the business package that is to be implemented in my Portal, i have to deploy two files as a pre-requisite that are associated with SAP Note 660777(https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/660777). I have imported the "com.sap.pct.crm.kmconfig40.par" file but having problems deploying "fullupdate_completeBP602.zip". I must admit that i haven't got much idea about importing packages via ICE as i have never used it before.
I tried to import it via, Portal->System Administration->System Configuration. In there, Actions->Import. When i point to the "fullupdate_completeBP602.zip" file and say Preview, i get a error message saying "Enter a valid configuration archive name". Isn't this the right way to import this package? Please guide. Thanks.
    Regards,

I suggest you also ask in the KM forum about ICE. There is also some information in the SAP help pages about ICE. For example an overview of it can be found
