Importing Via External Hard Drive

I used to have all of my music on my CPU hard drive. Having so much music + digital photos on that drive I got an external hard drive. I transfered the music to the external and deleted everything off of my main CPU. Now every time I turn on iTunes it brings all my music over from the external hard drive (I set that up in my preferences), but the problem is certain songs I click on I get the "!" symbol and it says it can't locate the song. I am having to manuelly search for a lot of songs now and I can't help but think there has to be an easier way. Any ideas?
Thanks.

i tried transferring my iphoto library from my old macbook onto my new macbook pro (via external hard drive), but when i open the new iphoto, it seems to have transferred ALL images ever used on my old macbook. so i tried to just delete all those images so i could try a different approach to transferring, but the new iphoto won't let me do anything and every time i try to delete anything it crashes (since the image amount is so high).  please help!!

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

If the iTunes sidebar (along left side of window) is hidden, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.
The iPod should appear in the sidebar, under DEVICES.  Select it there.  To the right, its Summary screen is shown.  Toward the top, there is a bar of buttons starting with Summary.  Click on Music next to Summary.  This Music screen is where you tell iTunes how to sync songs ot the iPod.
Check the box for Sync Music.  This is the switch to enable automatic syncing.  If your iTunes music library fits on the iPod, you can choose to sync Entire music library.  Otherwise, you can choose to sync Select playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Then select what you want on the iPod from the lists below.
Click Apply to intiate automatic syncing between that iTunes library and your iPod (based on how the iPod's Music screen is set up in iTunes).

  • Migrating via external hard drive doesn't work

I'm migrating from a Powerbook G4 to an iMac G5. For iTunes, I copied all data onto an external hard drive and connected that to the new iMac. But I can neither import the files via the "add to library"* command in iTunes nor can I simply copy the files onto the hard drive of the new iMac. The error message is always the same: "The attempt to copy onto the volume "Macintosh HD" failed. This medium is neither readable nor writable."* Needless to say, that I don't have any problems with the hard drive except for this one. Why is that so?
*This is the translation of the German command/message - the English version actually might be slightly different.

    Maverick,
Assuming that you're using the standard paths on your PB G4:
Just go to your user directory / Music: Copy the complete "iTunes" folder with all its content & all subfolder to your external disk.
On your G5 also go to your user directory / Music: Now replace the "iTunes" folder with the copy on your ext. disk.
Using this procedure all your playlists/playcounts ... will be migrated as well.

  • Importing from external hard-drive without all the clutter

greetings...i need to import my saved iphoto library from my external hard-drive back to my new computer's iphoto library...how can i best do this without bringing along all the clutter (copies or originals i don't want)...i dropped my entire saved library into my computer's library but ended up with thousands of versions i do not want (i just want the versions i last had-complete with typed information or labeling)...certainly one doesnt' have to go through the whole imported library and delete all the copies and originals they no longer want (that would take a week!)
    thanks,
here's what i see on my external hard-drive:
    (what should i drag over?)
    AlbumData.xml
    Data (Folder)
    Dir.data
    iPhoto.ipspot
    iPhotoLock.data
    iPod Photo Cache (Folder)
    Library.data
    Library.iPhoto
    Library6.iPhoto
    Modified (Folder)
    Originals (Folder)
    Thumb32Segment.data
    Thumb64Segment.data
    ThumbJPGSegment.data

    (what should i drag over?)
All of it, as a unit.
To restore an iPhoto Library drag the iPhoto Library Folder to the Pictures Folder and start iPhoto. There's no importing involved.
All of the "clutter" is necessary for running iPhoto. If you don't want it, use a different app.
It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss

  • Moving music files via external hard drive-- Can you keep ratings/playlists

I keep all my music on an external hard drive in order to prevent it getting lost. Anyways... what I'm wondering is if I go to move my music from one computer (comp. A) to another computer (comp. B), is it possible to keep all the ratings and my playlists? I've seen the stuff for transfering with your ipod, but the problem is my 30Gb doesn't hold all my music, and I would reeeeeaaally hate to go through and redo all the ratings. If anyone knows maybe a file involved with itunes that might contain the ratings or playlists that I could store with the files themselves to transfer that would be excellent. Thanks to anyone who can help out. If you need clarification on any of the details just lemme know.

It looks like it should, thanks. One other bit that I'm wondering about is how do I load that Library list once I've installed itunes on comp B? Is it just a matter of going file>import or file>add new file to library? Thanks again

  • Importing FROM external hard drive to new internal hard drive

How can I move my backed up Itunes library from my external hard drive to my new internal hard drive? I went through the steps listed on the support page, and imported the .xml playlist that I moved to the desktop. Now all my playlists (names only) are on Itunes, but there is no content. Help?

assuming you moved the whole iTunes folder to your new internal HD, try this:
launch iTunes with the options key pressed. this window will appear
click +choose library+ and navigate to the _iTunes library file_ on your internal HD.
    any luck ?

  • Migrating old iMac to new one via external hard drive with Time Machine

I was led to believe this was going to be easy!  Using the migration wizard in Utilities I was hoping to copy everything over via my external hard drive however it told me that it couldn't do it because the name already existed so muggins here gave it a new name.  It all ran smoothly, even all my email stuff etc etc.  Then Time Machine told me it couldn't back up any more because there wasn't enough space on the hard drive.  What I now have is two computers on one which I don't want and I don't know how to get it back and then solve the problem of having the same name on the back-up as the computer - not sure if this is making sense.  Can anyone help me please?
    thanks

Have a look at Pondini's Time Machine guide that might help you get back on track:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrationProblems.html
I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but Setup Assistant is the better option for transferring your data.
If all else fails, you can always erase the drive, re-install the OS as if it's new out of the box and use Setup Assistant. Hopefully that won't be necessary and Pondini will see you right.

  • How to transfer itunes library via external hard drive?

How do I transfer my entire itunes library to a new pc via an external hard drive? I want to also keep the library on my old pc. Because my library is about 30gb I thought that getting an external hard drive would be the easiest way to do this. Are there any other options?

Start by consolidating your library. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them: Consolidating your library - Windows
Then copy the iTunes Folder to your external drive. Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
Disconnect your external drive and connect it to your new computer, copy the iTunes folder to the new pc. When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the default location on the new computer. On a PC this is \Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\ (or C:\Username\Music\ in Vista). You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
Once you have copied everything over hold down the Shift key in Windows when opening iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. Navigate to where you placed the copy of the library file and open it up: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them. Also if you are disposing of the old one remember to deauthorise it so you don't use up one of your allowances: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

  • When importing from external hard drive, photos appear as thumbnail size.  How do you edit.  Working on imac- snow leopard

I have photos on an external hard drive.  When I try to import them to iphotos they appear as a thumbnail (?), small in size.  How is the photo restored to its original image.  If I try to print, it comes out pixelated.   I have many photos on hard drive and would like to restore to original size.   Using Leopard OS

and the only time I see the pixellation problem is when the original photo's file size is small.
What did you expect? Of course if the file size is small it won't print well. There isn't enough data to create a reasonable quality print.
Web Photos are - typically - very heavily compressed to speed up downloading. I've seen Facebook photos - for instance - lose 90% of their file size after being "processed". There is no way that a 20kb file is going to print well at any size greater than a postage stamp.
So, basically, the problem you have is the photos you are importing, I'm afriad.

  • Reinstall CS2 via external hard drive

The Story: I have been running CS2 programs off of an external hard drive for over a year now with no problems (granted, I don't use it often). Recently, Photoshop (but not Illustrator) is telling me that I need to activate my copy of the program. I tried ignoring that, but now it won't let me use it at all without activating it. I tried activating it over the phone and it would not accept my activation code. I explained everything to customer service and they said I would need to reinstall CS2. However, the optical drive has been broken for awhile now, so actually inserting the disks into the laptop isn't an option. I have the physical disks, my laptop however will eat them. Customer service guy explained that wouldn't be a problem, I could simply copy the disks onto an external hard drive and install that way. Sounded shady to me, but he said that it would be very simple and easy.
So, I insert the disks into my other laptop, copy and paste them to my external hard drive and bring them over to the MacBook Pro. At first, it looked like it was working. I could open the installer, and the installation would begin. I select which components I would like to install, I select where I would like to install the program. However, as the actual installation begins it asks for me to "Please Insert Adobe Creative Suite Disk 1 to continue the installation". This is where I'm stuck. I've tried installing it via the file on the external hard drive. I've tried copying those files onto my desktop and running them from there. No dice.
LONG STORY SHORT: How can I properly install CS2 onto a MacBook Pro via an external hard drive instead of install disks?
Details: MacBook Pro running OS X, 10.5.8, 2 GHz Intel Core Duo. Adobe CS2 Premium (Education). Let me know if you need more details.
    Thanks so much!

Two things to be aware of.
    1. CS2 is completely unsupported under anything later than 10.4 and is not Intel native.
    2. CS2 is the earliest version eligible for upgrade pricing.

  • Viewing old itunes library via external hard drive

    'ello,
I have an external hard drive that I had linked up to my old  iMac, which has now died. I bought a new Macbook pro and want to plug in my old external into my wireless router and pick up my old itunes library. I have plugged in the external hard drive into the USB port on the router. If I look in Finder I can see the o2 router and I have tried to set Internet sharing to ON, but can't do it? I am not even sure that switching on Internet sharing will resolve the issue? Any help on this would be massive.
    Thank you.

    Hi Phil,
Why not just plug it directly into the computer over USB rather than going through the router? I'm also not sure what enabling Internet sharing would have to do with your ability to access the hard drive via the router. If anything there would be a setting on the router that you'd most likely need to enable to allow the USB content to be accessible as a network storage device.

  • HT3819 Home Sharing via External Hard Drive Question

  • MOV. files will not import from external hard drive to iMac.

Do I have to convert MOV files somehow to be able to import them into an iMac from an external hard drive?
The files were moved from MacBookPro to hard drive. They play fine on external hard drive but won't import into iMac which says file format not recognised.

The file plays on my desktop and from the external hard drive, but I converted one file to an MP4 which then imported to iPhoto. Any recommendations on how to convert to MP4 files in bulk?

  • File not found after importing from external hard drive

I have been importing music from an external hard drive into my Itunes account.  Some of the songs transfer fine, but some of them show up in Itunes as being imported, but when I go to listen to them I get a file not found message because the original file cannot be found.  If I have the hard drive plugged in there is no problem, but without it I get that message.
Any advice?  I"d really like to get all music set up in Itunes.

Search Amazon - Davie Pogue I believe has released the missing manual for Leopard - it is a good general reference Liz Castro did a great book on iPhoto 05 but has not done one for '08 as of now
The iPhoto Help section is very helpful
Reading this forum will teach you a lot about iPhoto
If you have not taken the iPhoto tutorials yet you should - http://www.apple.com/support/iphoto/
Make mistakes and fix them - that's the way I do it
