Importing video clips into slide shows

I often insert video clips into slide shows.  They mix nicely with pan and zoom still photos.  However, the type of video clips that can be inserted is very restricted.  Why is this?
Elements can deal with a wide variety of video formats but, as far as I can see, only AVI and WMV videos can be imported into slide shows.  Compact digital cameras typically use AVI, MOV and MP4 formats.  My camera produces MPG videos, which I cannot import.  I have to convert the clips into AVI format and reimport these into Organiser etc - which is very fiddly. I am considering buying a new camera that produces AVI video clips as standard.
Why is the choice of video formats so limited? I cannot find a list of allowable formats on the Adobe site.

Hi David
Thanks for this. I tried that, but again, Streamclip only imported content from the first clip, ignoring the rest...on further inspection, all the VOB files were sub-divisions of the the first item (in essence, the system had chopped up the first recording into sections and formatted them as VOB files, but failed to do that for the remaining content of the DVD).
I booked an appt with a Mac Genius today and he downloaded Handbrake and this appears to be the way forward - you can isolate any of the content from the DVD, and save into either avi or mp4 files. I currently don't need Streamclip, since after my selection's been saved unto the desktop it can be dragged into iMovie and edited from there. I'll be keeping Steamclip though...after all of the aggro, it seems to good to be true!
Thanks again for responding to my query. Really appreciated that you took the time.

  • Play multiple video clips in slide show

I have 4 video clips (or I can do it in 1 movie) I want to have a menu screen with one of the themes. Then I want the viewer to be able to choose clip 1 and then play all the way through the other 3 clips in succession. Or I want them to be able to click clip 3 and then have it play clip 3 and then through to clip 4 and return back to the menu. So basically I would like to work like a standard movie DVD you purchase at a store. Is this possible?
I know you can put clips into slide shows (hence the title of this thread), but when I do that, it automatically starts to play through the clips. Is there a way to choose the slide show and then to give you the option in there to choose which clip your want, and then to play through the rest sequentially?

    Here's a technique I like to use...
Create a shape -- It will be black and white where the white is what you want to show video. In the control tab of the shape you can change size/softness/location/aspect... etc.
Lay the video on the track above - Change the VIDEO track's composite mode to TravelMatte-Luma.
Use the video's motion tab viewer and image/wireframe in the canvas to center up the image you want.
Add another shape above that and then video track and change to TravelMatte-Luma etc.
The plus for this way is that you can change the video without have to reset all the croping and trying to match it all.

  • Import video clip into Photoshop

Seems when I attended an Adobe NAB seminar they said that it is possible to import a video clip into Photoshop to use tools, like clone, to remove objects from the clip. Is this possible and if so, is there a tutorial outlining the process. Thanks,

    Thanks Jim,
Went there and could not find a clip amoung the numerous ones available. Great resource by the way. I used many combinations so search words and nothing came up. Can you give me the search words I need or do you have a title for the clip? This will help me navigate that site and get to the meat of what I need. Thanks,

  • Importing video clips into iphoto

    hi,
is it possible to import video clips from a digital stills camera into iphoto? haven't had much luck doing it, can anyone help?
    thanks
    nick

    Hi nick,
When iPhoto 5 first came out I really think it was programmed to import the smaller 30 sec video clips that cameras were taking at the time. Since then, digital cameras, at least my Canon S2 can take clips as large as your memory card can hold. The first time I tried to download my images and movie clips with my new camera, iPhoto stalled at the movie clips. I wasn't going to take any chances messing up my iPhoto Library so I started using Image Capture to download all my images and Movie clips. I actually like doing it this way a lot better. My movie clips are downloaded into my Movies folder where I then put them in a dated folder.
My photos are downloaded into my Pictures folder, where I then put them in a dated folder. I import the dated folder into iPhoto. I also keep all dated folders from photo downloads in the Pictures folder till I get enough Movie folders and Photo folders to fill a DVD. I burn them and then delete them from the hard drive.
This way I have the photos in iPhoto and I also have just the photos backed up to DVD.
The Movies I keep on the hard drive in their dated folders until I use all the clips for my iMovie projects for the Year. I then make sure they are all burned to DVD, then I delete those from my hard drive.
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
    Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.

  • How do you increase the size of a video clip in slide show?

Using Elements 7. Video clips can be run in full screen when from the Organizer, but when playing the slide show, they only display about 1/3 the size of the screen with a large black border around them.

Thought I'd try this just in case they are stripping out attachments.

  • Can not import video clips into iMovie from Photos

I have some clips that I copied from my GoPro to my iPad via the Apple Camera Connection Kit.  When I open iMovie there are icons for the clips but iMovie will not import them.  The format is H.264.  Is there a way of tricking iMovie?

Here is the problem, Im making a movie, I took all the video on my Kodak V610 Camera. I have the clips in .mov format. The clips are stored on an external disk in my iPhoto library.
Your digital camera probably uses MPEG-4 video (compatible with iMovie '08 in combination with µ-Law 2:1 compressed audio (which is not iMovie '08 compatible). While using the MPEG Streamclip MPEG-4 conversion will work, the prefered methof would be to use the QT "Movie to MPEG-4" option in QT Pro (quicker if you have it) or GarageBand (via the "Expert Settings option) to "pass through" you video while converting the audio to AAC (MPEG-4 audio). A mono setting of 64 Kbps with a 44.1 KHz sampling rate is a bit of "overkill" with respect to the original audio but will be quality compatible with what iMovie uses for its output presets.

  • Importing Video clips into Prem CS5

    Hi,
Just upgraded from 1.5.1 to CS5.
When I try importing .avi videos captured in 1.5.1 into the project, only the audio appears and not the video. I drag them onto the timeline, and again only the audio goes onto the timeline.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Cheers

I ran G-Spot and it turns out the codec is - CineForm 10-bit Visually Perfect HD (Wavelet)
Should I try and download that to solve the problem?

  • Assembling still photos and video clips into one video presentation.

This is partly a Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements (both version 7) question, so hopefully not posting to the wrong group (there doesn't seem to be a Premiere Elements forum anyway)!
I am currently putting together a video/slideshow presentation, initially for display directly from a computer (to data projector) and then ultimately to end up on a DVD.  The presentation  consists of digital and scanned photographs (prints and transparencies) and video clips.  I successfully put together a slideshow of all the stills with Photoshop Elements, inlcuding music etc.  I then output the slideshow to Premiere Elements, so that I could merge it with my already edited video clips.
The output process works smoothly enough, but as soon as I run the completed presentation, the quality of the imported slideshow is nothing short of woeful!  Each image is badly pixellated and all the transition effects are mangled - in short, it is unwatchable.  As it turns out, simply adding a single, still image to Premiere Elements results in a very poor final image.  Drop the exact same video clips and still images into Windows Movie Maker and the quality is spot on (as is playing the slideshow after outputting it as a WMV file and playing via any player capable of playing WMVs).
Trying to go the other way, ie importing video clips into Photoshop Elements, pretty much always results in it crashing!
The two products are marketed to "work together", but they are an abject failure in this regard!
OS is 64 bit Vista Ultimate.
I've tried searching the manuals and online help, but could find nothing of any help.  I've sent an e-mail to Adobe support, but have received no response from them (after three weeks).
I'm hoping that someone may be able to point out something that I may have missed, or offer some tips and tricks.
    Thanks.

There is a separate forum for Premiere Elements at
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere/premiere_elements
Also, my favorite place for Premiere Elements questions (including slideshows) is a site started by some Adobe Premiere Elements forum regulars at http://muvipix.com/phpBB3/index.php   Forum signup is free. There are multiple subforums at that site and because most of your questions are Premiere elements, I suggest that you post under the "PE version 7" subforum.
Wherever you decide to post, I suggest that you include in your post my comments and the answers to the questions that I asked here.
1 -- It has FAQs over to the right of the thread listing on the Adobe Premiere Elements forum. One of those FAQs that is relevant to your current workflow is
What resolution should my photos be in Premiere Elements?
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/431851?tstart=0
2 -- Also, I suspect that you used Pan and/or Zoom on some of your photos when creating the Slide Show withinn Photoshop Elements.
For those photos, you want the Premiere Elements setting of Scale to Framesize set OFF.
3- There are also other considerations such as
-- which Project Setting you are using in Premiere Elements?
-- what dimensions are you using when you export from Premiere Elements to the WMV file?
-- what is the resolution for the projector on which this video will initially be displayed?
4 -- I do agree with your approach of adding the video in Premiere Elements.
5 -- The mangled transitions needs more detailed info in order to discuss.
Tthe timing of transitions is definitely different between the Photoshop Elements slideshow editor playback and the Premiere Elements output: this gives some people serious problems and for others it is not significant.  I don't know yet if that is your problem.

  • Is there a way to copy referenced video clips into the iMovie library?

When I import video clips into an iMovie event it seems that iMovie uses only a reference to the file. When files are moved things get horrible broken soon. I noticed that iMovie does actually copy video clips into your library when you convert your library from iMovie'11 to iMovie'13. Is there a way to copy video clips into the iMovie library when importing them so that they don't get lost?

  • I cannot import video clips when working with iMovie

I have a 13" Macbook Pro running Mavericks versión 10.9.4 but lately I do not know what happened since everytime I try to import video clips into my movie or trailer I am unable to get it. Those thumbnail are grey out, I can't drag them out into my project. Why ?

In Lion, one can select a video clip, go to finder services, and click on encode video...it will transcode the .mpg to something iMovie can handle. Far as I can tell, .mpg is not something iMovie likes to play with.

  • Importing video clips in AVCHD (Lite) into Aperture vs iMovie

I'm trying to figure out which application I should use for importing and storing video clips shot on my Panasonic DMC-ZS7 camera. This camera can shoot in AVCHD (Lite) or in Motion JPEG. I use the AVCHD (Lite) format to shoot the videos with this camera.
The two application options I currently have for importing video clips from this camera are:
    a. Aperture 3.5.1 (I'm not using iPhoto since I have Aperture).
    b. iMovie 10.0.1 (I'm not using Final Cut Pro)
When I first got this camera, Aperture 3 did not support the AVCHD Lite codec. Back then, iMovie could import video clips shot in AVCHD Lite, but it had to transcode the AVCHD video clips into AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec). Some time later, one of the Aperture 3 updates made it possible to import AVCHD Lite into Aperture (without having to transode into an intermediate codec), so we started importing our video clips shot in AVCHD Lite (together with our photos shot by the same camera) directly into Aperture.
iMovie 10 released in 2013 supports importing video clips shot in AVCHD Lite without having to transode them to AIC for storing these video clips in iMovie. So, now we have a dilemma that we need help with. Which application should we use going forward for importing video clips from this camera?
When I look at the metadata for the imported videos in Aperture, I see that the format of the imported video clips is listed as H.264. However, I can't seem to be able to find any information about the format in which iMovie stores imported videos. I can "Reveal in Finder" a video that I import into iMovie, and I see the size of the file and the .mov extension assigned to the file. With video files, the extension does not always determine the codec of the file, but in my non-expert opinion, the .mov extension is not H.264; I may be totally wrong here, though. What I have noticed, though, is that a video clip imported into iMovie has the file size that is about 10% larger than the same video clip imported into Aperture.
    Therefore, I have three questions:
    1. What format is a video clip (shot in AVCHD Lite) stored in Aperture 3.5.1 and in iMovie 10.0.1
    2. Which format (the one used by Aperture or the one used in iMovie) is better suited for transoding AVCHD videos into? The balance of the quality and file size is the main consideration for us.
    3. Which applications would you personally prefer using for importing video clips to and why?
I do want to use some of these video clips to make home videos in the future, utillizing iMovie. However, it seems I can still store the raw footage in Aperture and access this raw footage from iMovie to be able to create an iMovie project and a final home video. One of the concerns is that if we keep importing our video clips into Aperture, the Aperture library could grow beyond the size that Aperture can support and we may end up losing our photos due to the database corruption. Is this a real risk?
    Thank you!

I had the same question recently. Go to the right of this box and a little above, into the Search Discussions window. Type in this: Is MPEG2 the answer
You will find my question, and the great answers I got. Follow those directions and you will be all set!

  • How do I import video clips from iPhoto if it doesn't recognize the video clips in iMoive

I'm trying to make a movie using iMovie and I recorded some clips using a Sony Digital Camera and iMovie won't let me upload the video clips from iPhoto. I try to import them but when i try to click on the file, it won't let me. Like its not bold like other files (It will let me upload video that were taken with my iPhone) I have iMovie 09.
What do I need to do?
    Thanks!
    Ayca

Do you plan to put each video clip in iDVD to be playes separately?  If so then here's how:
1 - open iDVD and select your theme.
2 - click on the Media button at the bottom right and then on the Photo button at the top.
3 - in the search window type in ".mov" (or the extension of the video clips you plan to use).
4 - all of the video clips with the extension you entered will be displayed and you can drag them into the menu area at the left.
Another way would be to put all of the video clips in an Album and click on that album to view and drag the clips:
Remember, the order that they are added to the menu will be the order that the buttons will highlight when you scroll thru the buttons with a DVD player remote.
This will give you a menu with a separate button for each video clip (up to 12 in a menu with some themes).
If you want to play all of the clips one after another you could create a slideshow in iDVD with the "+" button at the bottom and drag the video clips into the slideshow as you would still photos.  Set the slide duration to anything but manual and don't apply any transition.
That will let you play all of the clips sequentially.

  • Playhead info for imported video clips is static/constant in iMovie 9 as I scroll over the clips. Is it possible to make it display correct info?

HI, I have been importing videos clips from a SD card to iMovie 09. These clips are analyzed for animal behavior and the timing information for a specific event is critical for proper analyses. Most of the times, the imported clips display correct timing information for a given frame as I scroll over the clips. However, sometimes, some clips show a static or constant timestamp for all the frames in a clip and the timing information doesn't change in the playhead as I scroll over different frames.
For such clips, I was wondering if it's possible to display correct timing information for the frames, and how? Since I only need frame timing info relative to the starting point, I am open to a solution that involves readjusting starting timestamp.
Thank you so much for your time and help.

    Several ways to do this.
I would scrub to the in point of the audio you want to change, then drag all the way back to the beginning of the clip. Then EDIT/SPLIT CLIP or right-click/Split Clip. Then go to the out point of the audio clip and drag to the right to the end of the clip. Then Edit/Split Clip. The clip in the middle should have your 25 minutes of audio.
