Importing Video from DVD to Edit in iMovie?

I need to import video from a DVD to edit in iMovie. What's the best way to go about this?
Thanks,
Ted
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Also own an iBook, G3 500mhz, 10gb drive

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
* DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
* Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
* Cinematize >60$
* Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
* Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
* connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
none of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

Follow the steps below to troubleshoot if the computer does not recognize the USB connection from the camcorder.
    Turn off the camcorder.
Ensure the USB cable is connected securely to the camcorder.
Ensure the other end of the USB cable is connected securely to the USB port on the computer. NOTE:  Connection through a USB hub is not supported.
With the exception of the mouse, keyboard, and camcorder, remove any other USB connected devices from the computer.
    Turn on the camcorder.
On the camcorder LCD screen, touch the computer or hard disk icon.
If the issue is still not resolved, connect the USB cable to a different USB port on the computer.
If the issue is still not resolved, try uninstalling and reinstalling the USB driver.
If the issue is still not resolved, test the USB port on the computer by connecting a different USB device.

  • Impossible to import videos from Panasonic SDR s26 to iMovie 09, previously no problem. Why?

Impossible to import videos from Panasonic SDR s26 to iMovie 09, previously no problem. Any way to solve this problem?

I don't have your model but here are some things to try.
    1) Make sure you are powering the camcorder with AC power not batteries.
    2) Open iMovie before connecting the Camcorder
    3) Connect the USB Cable and turn on the camcorder
    4) Open the LCD screen of the camcorder. Does it give you a choice of Pictbridge vs. PC Mode. If so, choose PC Mode.
    5) iMovie import screen should come up.
Also, make sure you have installed all software updates. (/Software Update). If the software update requires you to restart your Mac, then restart your Mac before proceeding. Install iMovie, iLife, Quicktime, and Leopard updates.
If that still does not work, try taking out your SD card and putting in a USB card reader.
If that still does not work, put the card back in the camcorder and make a disk image of the card using disk utility. After making the disk image, try formatting the card using your camcorder menu. Then retry shooting some footage and importing.
By the way, using MPEG streamclip should not create files any larger than iMovie will create using an import function.

  • Import Video from DVD

When I import a 3-minute video from DVD into my project, it shows up as a single photo of the 1st frame. When I preview it, the entire video play fine. Question: How do I display it such that I can see ALL of the frames in the video? … or is it NOT possible. Thank you.

  • Capture and import video from DVD

Just switched from PC to MAC. I have my travel videos on DVD's. In iMovie 08 how do I capture and import the video that's on the DVD into iMovie. I couldn't find any help on this topic.
    Any help is appreciated.

Take a look at Cinematize 2, I've used it with iMovie 06 and iDVD 08. It has several modes of converting the data. One mode is called "lossless".
For the job you're doing you may prefer to use iMovie 06 instead of iMovie 08 (I would).
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination.
iMovie 06 is a free download to iLife 08 owners. (THEY WANT YOU TO HAVE IT!)
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/imovieHD6.html
Your workflow would go something like this.
Use Cinematize 2 to create a Quicktime file from the DVD.
Important that file into iMovie 06.
From iMovie 06, share to iDVD 08 (assuming you want a DVD).

  • Import video from DVD (VOB files)?

What is the recommended way to import DVD (non-commercial/non-encrypted) footage into Final Cut Pro X? I have some clips on a DVD that I need to include in my project. I don't want to transcode and I've read using streamclip is the way to go but requires purchasing an out of date codec from Apple, etc. Really Apple? That's absurd. There must be a better way.
    Thanks for any tips!
    -Marty

I get that, but you have to use some hacky work around to import video from a DVD. The version of the mpeg software is not even compatible with Mountain Lion. Tom, do you have a working workflow to import VOB files?
    Thanks.

  • Import video from iPhoto to the new iMovie

how does one import video from iPhoto video to i Movie for a project. This used to be simple.

In the CONTENT LIBRARY (bottom left) you should see an iPhoto item which when clicked gives you access to your iPhoto library.  Does this not include videos?  (I don't use iPhoto so cannot check).

I recently bought the Canon Powershot D30 underwater camera. I tried to import the video clips to iMovie without success. It can only export to iPhoto and the video clips when dragged to iMovie became still shots. How do I transfer the videos to iMovie for editing? I have a MacBook Pro with iMovie 11

Not sure of what you mean when you "never find where the video went". Did you use the import function of iMovie or ? If it is from the camera software, I suspect the video went to your Movies folder in your user folder. But...
Just checked this out and it is simple. I assume your video is on an SD card or something like that. Just download the movie to your desktop from the camera, then open iMovie 09 and go to the import function under the file menu and import the movie from your desktop. As to

  • How do I import video from canon zr 500 to iMovie 2011?

    Hello,
Thank you in advance for your help. I am trying to import a video from a a Canon zr500 to iMovie 2011 for a college course assignment and the camcorder is not being recognized when plugged in via firewire. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions as to how I could accomplish this as cheaply as possible? I am new to using a Mac so please don't be too technical in explanations.
    Thank you,
    Ben

    Freezeframe-
Either a Thumb Drive or an SD card in the Camera Connection Kit adapter should work.  However SFX is not a file type I'm familiar with.
How about [Volume name]\DCIS\[filename].[mp4]?  The file name must be 8 characters plus suffix.  It needs to look like it would if it had been recorded in the camera.
If that doesn't work, perhaps adding another folder will help.  A card from a Canon camera has another folder named "102___12".  That would make the path [Volume name]\DCIS\102___12\[filename].[mp4].
The more common way to transfer videos to the iPad is using iTunes that had previously synced with it.  Select Movies under LIBRARY on the left side of the iTunes window.  Then you should be able to drag the video file into that window.  The video will be transfered the next time you sync.  This way, the file name is not critical, as long as it has the correct suffix.

  • How do i import videos from my iPhoto to my iMovie?

I need to know how to import video clips from my iPhoto to my iMovie to put into a movie. I know how to import pictures from iPhoto to iMovie but not video clips. Help??

All the compatible videos that you have in iPhoto should appear automatically in iMovie in an Event named "iPhoto Videos".
Each time you open iMovie, it will look for any new video clips in iPhoto. Thumbnails will be generated and placed in chronological order in the iPhoto Videos Event.
You can drag clips from the iPhoto Videos Event to the timeline of any project (new or established), just as you do with clips in other Events.
Note that no duplication occurs on the hard drive. The clip thumbnails in the iPhoto Videos Event are simply referenced (linked to) the actual video in the iPhoto app.
So, there is really no need to separately import the iPhoto video clips into iMovie - unless of course you have a particular reason to do this (such as for a better organisation of the clips).

  • Importing videos from dvds

Is there any way to import movies and tv shows from dvds onto itunes?

    Hopefully you are computer savy.
Check google out for some tutorials for the details but this is my method.
MacTheRipper > mainfeature extraction (english 5.1)
    Handbrake > h.264 AAC profile.
    OR
MacTheRipper > handbrake > isquint for awesome small size and great quality.
There are a million ways to do it but I would reccomend using a Mac to do it, the software is just so much more superior.
to give you an idea of what to shoot for:
Castaway (about 2.5 hrs.) 300MB looks watchable on TV out
tv show (21 min) 35 MB looks pretty decent tv out, quiet audio
both those profiles look perfect on ipod.... but they bonus as decent tv outs. i can email you with details if you want, but im assuming you are stuck with windows programs....

  • IMovie will not import video from DVD

I transferred a VHS tape to a DVD using my Panasonic DVD recorder. I finalized the disk and then attempted to import the disk to iMovie in order to edit it.
I could not get the video to import. I get the following message: "You selected a directory to import, but no importable movies were found inside. Please select another directory or file."
The files in the DVD folder end in VOB.
With some wrangling, I can get the disk to play on the DVD Player, but I cannot get it to play every time.
When I click on the movie file in the DVD folder DVD Player says the media type is not supported.
    How can I import this?
