Importing Video Help (Final Cut Express)

I'm trying to import video from my camera to my computer. I am using a cord that connects via my computers USB port. But for some reason it won't recognize that I have a camera connected. How do I make it so it will recognize not only firewire, but USB as well... Thanks

*Maybe I don't have firewire*
*but I had a crazy Idea that maybe someone here would be nice enough to help....*
We have this crazy idea that you might want to tell us what cam you have with what ports, etc.
Instead, you make coy little comments that provide no information other than you have a camera.
If you want some help, why start by providing detailed information.
Starting with WHAT CAMERA DO YOU HAVE?
And why are posting in a Final Cut Pro forum if you have Final Cut Express.

Get a copy of MPEG Streamclip and convert your MPG file to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC).  In FCE, select one of the setups that uses AIC that best matches your clip (say, 1920x1080i60).  Create a new sequence, then import the converted file.
Note that if your MPG file is actually MPEG2 you will also need the QuickTime MPEG2 Component in addition to MPEG Streamclip.
What was the source of the MPG file?  How about if you open it in QuickTime, then do Window > Show Movie Inspector.  Tell us what it says for codec/compression, frame size & frame rate.

  • TS2179 import files from final cut express to idvd

Import files from final cut express to idvd. When we are making a dvd in iDVD importing the files (widescreen mov files ) from final cut express they automatically change to 4x3. They look correct when played in the quicktime player. Has anyone had this problem.

Generally, I just drag the DV file from the finder to the iDVD menu window. Make sure you don't drag it to any Drop Zones, I think that might be your problem with the DV file showing up as the background. If you have default settings in iDVD, this drag and drop should then create submenus based on your chapter markers.
I'm not sure if you have any issues with the Chapters not showing up in QT. If you're expecting them to show up, then make sure that when you do the Export to QT that the option to include Chapter Markers is set. Upon conversion, you should see the Chapters within QT as well as when imported into iDVD.
    Hope this helps!

  • I have a .mov file that is 59 gigs.  Is there a converter that can reduce the file size with minor resolution loss so I can import it into final cut express?

I have a .mov file that is 59 gigs.  Is there a converter that can reduce the file size with minor resolution loss so I can import it into final cut express?

Open the file in QuickTime Player. Then do Tools > Show Movie Inspector.  What does it say for Format and FPS?
At 59GB, I suspect you have either a 4 hour DV video or a 1+ hour video that was converted to Apple Intermediate Codec.   If it's either of those, you can import it directly into FCE provided you select the appropriate Easy Setup first.  Your clips have to match the properties of the Easy Setup you are using.
If it's neither DV or AIC then you need to convert it to one of those codecs.  (QuickTime/DV or QuickTime/AIC)  Many people in this forum rely on MPEG Streamclip (it's free and works great).

  • Bizarre results importing imovie into final cut express?

I have filmed different interviews which were captured in imovie. I am now trying to import them into final cut express. But when I import one interview called, say, Gavin I get Karen's interview instead. The clip is labelled Gavin but the footsage is from a different interview. No matter who I import I get a completely different project and there is no rhyme nor reason to the footage that opens up.
Basically I get the wrong footage with every clip I open.
Please help before I end up in the loony bin!
    Exasperated,
    Clare

I bought Final cut express just after capturing all my files in imovie (having heard that it was supposed to be easier to cature and trim in imovie before sending the files to fce - is this what you have heard?). If it weren't for a solid week capturing and trimming 40 hours of film I would recapture in fce!!
I have even replaced the captured media within the scratch folder but still it opens the wrong files.
The files are labelled as the interviewees name. All the books say that you can import imovie projects into fce and then render and save as fce files.
I have tried various methods of importing, opening and even dragging a clip straight from imovie into the browser of fce - which works but opens an original untrimmed version rather than the short trimmed version and again it will be an interview of the wrong person.
I have since been turning the imovie files into .mov files and opening them in fce - this seems to work but hope there is no change to quality.
Would this be the way to go? I would so appreciate an answer!
    Thanks

  • Exporting HD Video From Final Cut Express HD

When attempting to export HD video from Final Cut Express using "uncompressed" setting, I notice that the output quality seems to be limited to "medium." If no compression is used, wouldn't that imply that the video quality should equal original footage?

All FCE Timelines are using the AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec) for HD stuff if you selected the correct Easy Setup before you started your Project.
If you export as a Quicktime Movie then you are getting exactly the same export quality as the Timeline.
The Quicktime Movie can be either Self-Contained or a Reference file. Reference Files are great because they use/reference you exisating captured files on your Scratch Disc, use less space and export fast.
However if you need to play the export somewhere other than your Mac your will require the file to be Self-Contained.
QuickTime Conversion does just that, Converts to whatever you select.

  • Exporting a Video from final cut express and uploading to vimeo

I film with a Sony FX-7 in 1080HDV and would like to know the specific settings of how I should export my video from Final Cut Express to vimeo to be played in HD mode on a vimeo account.

I looked that link up but my video seems to be running pretty slow, here's the link to the vid http://vimeo.com/20580561
Do u have any advice on what I should change for the settings?

  • I'm trying to make "Stop motion videos"  in Final Cut EXPRESS by using 100's of still photos and setting them to music.  They are coming out blurry if viewed larger than 4x6 in size

I'm trying to make "Stop motion videos"  in Final Cut EXPRESS by using 100's of still photos and setting them to music.  They are coming out blurry if viewed larger than 4x6 in size.
I don't understand why this is happening.

Quick follow up, since I was on my phone earlier and am back to a real keyboard.
To access Easy Setup, hit Control Q.
If you click on the blue discosure triangles, a dropdown menu with about a dozen different presets will be displayed. Select the one you want, (Here, I've selected 720P.)
Whatever you select for a preset will not be applied until you make a new sequence. (I don't like to have sequences with different properties in the same project so I prefer to make a new project if I change the Easy Setup.)
Because photo aspect ratios are different than video, I typically put a solid generator of some compatible color on the first track (v1) and put my photos on the track above (v2). Looks better, IMO, than black bars. There are other creative ways to display them. And of course, you could scale them up to fill the frame…but then you probably would have to re-position them.
    Good luck.

  • Importing itunes into final cut express

I just bought an IMAC with Final Cut Express to do all my video editing of my kids activities. I used Pinnacle Studio on my old PC prior to this but it finally gave out. I downloaded some music CD's I had into itunes and then tried importing the music into FCE. This is not working. I have no problem adding it to my imovies but it will not work with FCE. The music format is m4a which I think is typical.
I went to You Tube and watch several tutorials from some of fellow FC users and still cannot get it to work. There must be something I have to set up in FCE to get this to work but I do not know what that is. I been looking around the program and have not been successful. Any help any of you can provide would be great. Thanks.. Ron

Hi Ron, and welcome to the FCE Forum !
You should convert the audio files to AIFF, 48KHz (aka 16-bit) stereo before importing them into FCE. Neither CDs nor iTunes songs are in that format. You can use iTunes to do the conversion.
With a new Mac and Snow Leopard you probably have iTunes9. Open Preferences, then go to General > Import Settings, then select AIFF and set Custom Settings as 48KHz, 16-bit, stereo. Save the settings. Then in your music library, select the song(s) you want to convert and do Advanced > Create AIFF version. (Note: the format you selected in Import Settings controls what the Advanced > Create menu option does.)

  • Importing file from final cut express to final cut pro

Hello, I am taking a video I have been working on from final cut express and opening it into final cut pro on another machine. It brings footage over but completely incorrect. I am editing a music video and its basically taking the files and putting them out of sequence etc. When I first open up final cut pro it will say do you want to update this video to the new version which I expected to which I respond yes but its jacked up after that. Any suggestions?

  • Uploading Hi8 Videos into Final Cut Express

    Hi,
I am having trouble uploading H8 video files into Final Cut Express.
    What I have is:
    Sony Player SLV-T2000
    Canopus didital converter ADVC-100
I have connected the rca cables from the player to the digital recorder and then the firewire cable from the digital converter to the Macbook Pro. Also the digital convertor is set for analogue in.
When I play the Hi8 tape I can see the video in the viewer but it will not capture.
Can someone advice me where I am going wrong.

    Hi
May be You find something here (it's not only for iMovie but FCE/P too)
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)
    A/D-box
    • Is the dip-switches set right ?
    • Set to same standard as recorded/editing e.g. NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
    • Try resetting it
    Connections
    • Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
    • GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
    • Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
    • FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
    • Screen Saver - OFF
    • Energy Saver - OFF
    Using WHAT versions ? .
    • Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
    • If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE   Mac OS Extended   formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

in addition to Bengt's excellent '9 yards of advice' ..
camera set to 'Play' , not rec/computer/etc.?
camera not on battery, but power-line?
did your Mac 'recognize' this camera before...?
    a technical check.
    connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...
click on the Blue Apple, upper left of your screen ..
    choose 'About . . / More . .

    • Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
    • Where did You store/capture/import Your project ?
External USB hard disk = Bad Choice / FireWire = Good
If so it has to be Mac OS Extended formatted
----> UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange is NOT Working for VIDEO !

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.
    No Camera or bad import
    • USB hard disk
    • Network storage
    • File Vault is on

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconnect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Importing Files into Final Cut Express

I have a technical issue that I hope someone can assist me with...
I recieved 2 harddrives full of video clips that were shot in HD from a video production house. Here is the content on the drives: CARD 1 (folder), inside this folder there are 2 items (CONTENTS & LASTCLIP.txt) in the CONTENT folder are the following folders : AUDIO, CLIP, ICON, PROXY, VIDEO, and VOICE.
My question/dilemma: Can I import these clips into Final Cut Express to edit? I have an older version of Final Cut HD that won't work with these files.
Any and all input will be greatly appreciated.

HELP ! Anybody, please help !
As you can probably guess. I've reached the limit of my "expertise" with your files ....... ".XML" sounds familiar but you will have to hang around for someone else to tell you whether and how they can be used.
One thing I am sure about (I think!) is that the latest version of FCE will be no better than the older one you have.

  • HELP HELP HELP    Final Cut Express   HELP HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just got Final Cut Express and I a having so much trouble. First of all I can’t get videos to import from my camera, so I put them into imovie and converted them to xml files. When I bring the xml files into final cut all it says its media offline. I went and located them still the same. So then I just exported the videos from imovie to my desktop and dragged them into final cut. This worked but it takes almost two hours to complete this process. Now I have a clip final cit and I render it, but if I move the clip the slightest bit the clip says it’s un-rendered. I hear all about how I need to match the rate sizes but I cannot figure out how to do this. Please help me I am getting so frustrated.
    The camera I am using is a Samsung HMX-H200 Camcorder - 1080i - 3.32 MP - 20 x optical zoom is that will help
    Thank you

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Your camera shoots in H.264, a delivery format that FCE does not support. You should first convert your clips using the free [MPEG Streamclip|http://www.squared5.com> to Quicktime in the Apple Intermediate Codec at a frame size of 1920x1080, a frame rate of 29.97fps, and audio set to Uncompressed Stereo 48kHz. Streamclip has a batch convert function that you may find useful.
Once you are done converting (don't use iMovie, go straight from the camera to Streamclip), import the clips into FCE and edit them in a 1920x1080i60 sequence for best results. You shouldn't have to render.

  • Trouble importing .mov into Final Cut Express

I have a number of video clips given to me by a client in Italy and provided as .mov files. I can view them in Quicktime with no problem. I want to edit them. I have Final Cut Express 4 and when I import the files, I can see the file listed, I can hear the audio play but I can't see the video. Is this a conversion problem of some sort? Do I need to convert it first into a different format — if so, what format and what conversion software do you recommend (I tried a couple of free ones to no avail).
Thanks for any help you can provide!

    Hi everybody,
I've solved the problem by installing Final Cut 6 (latest version): when drag and drop the clip, the settings instantly suit to the clip properties (making rendering un-necessary).
The images are still stretched but, when I deselect "Show as Sq. Pixel" from the first of those 3 menus on the canvas display, images suddenly appear exactly as I wanted (even the images quality is exactly the same as the source).
Now the problem is Compressor (still latest version):
I've tried to convert with a lot of presets, but images are still vertically stretched and images are not as clear and sharp as the source.
    Which is the right preset??
    Thank you!
