Importing video on PowerBook G4

I have imported a video clip into a CPS program for a presentation. On my PowerBook, which has more memory and a faster processor than the eMac, the video stops and starts and gets out of synch all the way through. On the eMac, which should be the one giving me the problems, the video plays smoothly andis great. Does anyone have any ideas why on the PowerBook it would be inferior? The PowerBook should be far superior to the eMac. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have updated QuickTime and anything else I can find to update. Thanks!

Perhaps an easier way to test the drive speed theory would be to put the PowerBook into Firewire target mode (restart with T help down), and connect that to the eMac and run the video from the PowerBook drive. That would show if the slower drive makes all the difference. If the video plays perfectly then something else is slowing down the PowerBook. Connecting the eMac drive to the PowerBook would also be a valid test, but booting the PowerBook off the eMac drive wouldn't, because if the video played well from the eMac drive you couldn't be sure if it was a system software issue or a drive speed.
One thing you could try though from having started the PowerBook from teh eMac drive is you could play the video from the PowerBook drive. If it plays well that would prove that it's a software issue. Things like Spotlight indexing or Virex could be culprits.
The data rate on compressed movies is relatively low, and although I mentioned it as a possibility I don't think that a 4200 rpm drive will play a moderate data rate video (even 28 megabit DV) any less well than a 7200 rpm drive.

How can I import video from a Hi8 tape into my mac for editing in iMovie.

iMovie will only import via Firewire. You need to borrow or otherwise obtain a Sony Digital-8 camcorder. These camcorders can read both digital and analog (like yours) 8-mm tapes and send them over Firewire. The results will not be as sharp as that from a digital camcorder, but it will be fine on a TV.

  • How to get iMovie version 9.09/2009 Mac version 10.7.5 to recognize JVC GR-DX77U camcorder via 9 pin to 4 pin firewire and import video

My question: Is it possible to get iMovie version 9.09/2009 MacBook Pro/ Mac Os X version 10.7.5 to recognize JVC GR-DX77U camcorder via 9 pin to 4 pin firewire and import video?
My camcorder is recognized with 4 pin to 4 pin firewire on laptop with Windows operating system; however, it will not recognize on MacBook Pro with 9pin to 4 pin firewire. JVC website does not offer any updated camcorder driver software for this camcorder and older version driver on CD will not download onto MacBook Pro.

    Hi
With the reservation of that I us:
    • iMovie 9.0.4
    • Mac OS X.6.9
    see my notes
    NO CAMERA or A/D-box
    Cable
    • Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
    • Test another FW-Cable very often the problem maker.
    Camera
    • Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
    • Toggle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on <-> off some times)
    • Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
    • Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
    • Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK e.g. recording and playback to TV)

    • FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
    External device’s (hard disk’s)
    • Should be FireWire as USB/USB2 performs badly and so does Airport or Net-work connected ones too.
    • MUST BE - Mac OS Extended formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - DO NOT WORK for video due to 4Gb barrier.
    Mac
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
    (Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minimum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited. No Camera or A/D-box
    • GarageBands fix - Close iMovie, Open GarageBand, Play some notes, Close GB and iMove can now be OK
    • Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
    • White MacBooks - don't
    • MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
    else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
    • Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
    • Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
    • If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
    SoftWare
    • Delete iMovie pref. file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.

    • QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
    • iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
    • iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
Other ways to import Your miniDV tape
    • Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.

Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpful insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After un-installing Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
    //support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odw_en_GB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Import video via iMovie and play iTunes simultaneously...?

Yo there, Mac forum! I'm a new Mac user and am pretty dang psyched to be posting my first question. I love my new PowerBook. woo!
So I'm in an improv comedy troupe and I use the PowerBook to play music and sound effects during our shows. I also video tape every show for us to watch at a later date to analyze our performance (like football coaches do). I would like to stream the video directly to my Mac, so at the end of the show I'll have a digital version of the show nullifying the need to perform the intermediate step of digitizing it from the cam sometime later.
Now, using iTunes to play music during the show is simple. Also, using iMovie to copy video from the DV out of my cam to the hard drive is also simple as cake. The TRICKY part is doing both at exactly the same time as they both send audio signal to the minijack output (or speakers). That causes not only the iTunes music and/or sound effects to be played back thru to the stage, but also any sound that the camera picks up will also playback--which as any of you sound people out there know, causes some funky feedback and resonant effects since the cam is also picking up the iTunes tunes and sounds. Phew.
SOOO, does anyone know how I can can capture live video to my harddrive (to a file or movie project) where it does NOT send audio to the notebook speakers or minijack out so that I can utilize iTunes to be playing the music for the show while the video (with it's audio) is streaming into the mac "behind the scenes" in the background?
A lifetime of free tickets to our shows if you help me solve this!
    Cheers,

Oh, in the "old" days importing video was a sacred moment -- you carefully optimized the system and hoped for the best when importing with NOTHING else running on the system... Nowadays people switch to www-surfing, iTunes, or some heavy weight apps during import/export.
...And that's the way it should be! Unfortunately not every system can take such a load so there may still be hiccups and dropped frames or even dropped footage.
But to the original question: How does iMovie's volume slider affect iTunes playback. If you turn iMovie's volume down (in the import mode), does it mute also iTunes? If yes, then you may have to get another device to play the music.

  • Import Video to External HD

Hi everyone, it seems that I'm not the only one apple sent over here for this issue! I just bought a new sony camcorder and was importing video when my internal HD ran out of space. Apple support told me to transfer the video to my LaCie external drive, but they couldn't tell me how to do it. If anyone here can give me nicely detailed instructions on how to do this I would REALLY appreciate it. I trashed the clips I imported into iMovie and am ready to start from scratch! Thanks!
    Powerbook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Matt-
thanks for the info. I followed your instructions and think I've successfully figured out how to get the footage to the external HD. However, now I'm getting a problem that involves the footage stuttering as it's loading into iMovie and then the screen goes blue and stops importing. I click the import button again and the stuttering happens and blue appears...any ideas?
    thanks!

  • Imported video wrong speed

Because of the unacceptable and seemingly insurmountable problems in the sound quality when importing video to iMovie 5 after upgrading to 10.4.6 (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2517466#2517466), I decided to buy iLife 6.
Now, the sound problem is still there, and in addition, there is a totally bizarre new problem: when I import the video from my camera (Sony DCR TRV-900), the clips are speeded up: the camera plays in real time while the video is being imported, but in the iMovie clips one minute is reduced to about 40 seconds (actually, from 32 to 43 seconds when I stopped the import after each minute to test).
When I import the same video from the camera to Toast, neither of these problems exists, and I am able to then import the Toast file to iMovie and edit the video. The video and audio quality are ok--but still not as good as iMovie 5 with 10.4.5, before I upgraded to 10.4.6 and everything deteriorated. Obviously, this is a huge nuisance in terms of time, effort, and disc space, not to mention the wasted expense of buying iLife 6 which resulted in a further downgrade of the application.

Did you do what Karl suggested in your other thread?
He said ".. If the video you imported was shot as 12-bit audio, switch the camera to 16-bit (which iMovie prefers), shoot some video, and import the new stuff."
If your camera is presently set to 12-bit (32kHz) audio, set it to 16-bit (48kHz), do as Karl suggests, and let us know what happens.
I, too - like Karl and Bengt (who replied in your other thread) - also use a TRV900, and haven't had the problems you describe ..not with any version of iMovie, whether on a G4 12" PowerBook or any of the other computers shown below in small type.
    So this isn't a universal problem ..it's not specific to 10.4.6, or iMovie 6 or a G4 12" PowerBook, or the TRV900.
That suggests that it's something to do with how your specific Mac is configured.
First - if you haven't - do all the "house-cleaning" which Dan suggests under "Notes and Hints" here. Maybe you have various versions of QuickTime which haven't properly 'taken' when you upgraded. After doing all the clearing out of caches which Dan suggests, why not go to Applications>Disk Utility, choose your hard disc and click 'Repair Disk Permissions', then close down your Mac, restart it and re-apply the latest QuickTime download..?
If you've downloaded or installed other non-Apple video-editing applications or 'codecs', why not disable those, so that there can't possibly be any interference from them?
You might also try creating a new User, and start iMovie from there. If any other 'codecs' or movie-editing applications are specific to just your normal User, then those items shouldn't affect or interfere with iMovie when you start it up as a new User.
    Let us know what happens..

  • Unable to import video from Sony deck

I've been using FCE HD3.0 for well over a year with excellent results. I got tired of wearing out the heads on my camera using it to access footage so I broke down and purchased a Sony HVR-M15U editing deck. I'm able to control the device from the desktop quite well. However, every time I click the "capture now" button to import video, I get a gray screen overlaying the desktop and at the bottom it says "Allocating disk space" and my external drive(which has plenty of space) whirs for at least 3-4 minutes, after which I get another message stating, "Waiting for timecode. Device must be in VTR mode when device control enabled." This despite the fact that underneath the viewer, it states "VTR okay." I haven't been able to import a thing. Any ideas? I'm using OS10.4 with iMac G5 with Power PC chips. Thanks.

    G'Day Dan,
    Have you upgraded to 3.0.1?
Os 10.4 what? There was trouble with 10.4.9.
Does the deck have a Master/Slave setting?. Switch to Slave mode if so.

  • Unable to import video from DV cam.

    Hi,
I am encountering a problem when I come to import video into my version of FCP 6.0.
The DV camera is detected, and I can control it through the log and capture control panel, however when I select 'capture now' FCP only captures the first 3 seconds of my tape and the stops, prodcuing the following error message:
"Capture encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has aborted and your clip has been saved."
I don't believe there is a problem with my tape, as it is brand new, and has not been poorly treated. I have tried winding all the way through the tape and back, I have also tried different tapes, however I still get the same error message.
I find it odd that final cut always imports 3 seconds and then errors, does anybody know the answer? Please help!
    I am running a Mac Pro, 2 x 3 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon, with Mac OS X V.10.4.9.
My camera is a Panasonic, although I don't think this has any bearing on the problem.
    Thank you.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    Hi Guys,
I just wanted to say thanks for taking the time to reply to me, its really appreciated.
Unfortunately I still couldn't get it to work, so I called the people themselves at Apple, and a very nice guy talked me through the basic checks, and got it to work!
It turns out that my 'easy setup - use' was set to DVCPRO - PAL, instead of DV - PAL, and my camera was not DVCPRO Compatable. I changed this, opened a new project, (changes won't take effect unless you try in a new project), and it worked fine.
Thanks again everyone, I hope this helps anybody else who might have experienced this problem.

  • Importing video clips in AVCHD (Lite) into Aperture vs iMovie

I'm trying to figure out which application I should use for importing and storing video clips shot on my Panasonic DMC-ZS7 camera. This camera can shoot in AVCHD (Lite) or in Motion JPEG. I use the AVCHD (Lite) format to shoot the videos with this camera.
The two application options I currently have for importing video clips from this camera are:
    a. Aperture 3.5.1 (I'm not using iPhoto since I have Aperture).
    b. iMovie 10.0.1 (I'm not using Final Cut Pro)
When I first got this camera, Aperture 3 did not support the AVCHD Lite codec. Back then, iMovie could import video clips shot in AVCHD Lite, but it had to transcode the AVCHD video clips into AIC (Apple Intermediate Codec). Some time later, one of the Aperture 3 updates made it possible to import AVCHD Lite into Aperture (without having to transode into an intermediate codec), so we started importing our video clips shot in AVCHD Lite (together with our photos shot by the same camera) directly into Aperture.
iMovie 10 released in 2013 supports importing video clips shot in AVCHD Lite without having to transode them to AIC for storing these video clips in iMovie. So, now we have a dilemma that we need help with. Which application should we use going forward for importing video clips from this camera?
When I look at the metadata for the imported videos in Aperture, I see that the format of the imported video clips is listed as H.264. However, I can't seem to be able to find any information about the format in which iMovie stores imported videos. I can "Reveal in Finder" a video that I import into iMovie, and I see the size of the file and the .mov extension assigned to the file. With video files, the extension does not always determine the codec of the file, but in my non-expert opinion, the .mov extension is not H.264; I may be totally wrong here, though. What I have noticed, though, is that a video clip imported into iMovie has the file size that is about 10% larger than the same video clip imported into Aperture.
    Therefore, I have three questions:
    1. What format is a video clip (shot in AVCHD Lite) stored in Aperture 3.5.1 and in iMovie 10.0.1
    2. Which format (the one used by Aperture or the one used in iMovie) is better suited for transoding AVCHD videos into? The balance of the quality and file size is the main consideration for us.
    3. Which applications would you personally prefer using for importing video clips to and why?
I do want to use some of these video clips to make home videos in the future, utillizing iMovie. However, it seems I can still store the raw footage in Aperture and access this raw footage from iMovie to be able to create an iMovie project and a final home video. One of the concerns is that if we keep importing our video clips into Aperture, the Aperture library could grow beyond the size that Aperture can support and we may end up losing our photos due to the database corruption. Is this a real risk?
    Thank you!

I had the same question recently. Go to the right of this box and a little above, into the Search Discussions window. Type in this: Is MPEG2 the answer
You will find my question, and the great answers I got. Follow those directions and you will be all set!

I am not sure when this started happening or what has changed.  I went to import some video and in the import dialog box all my video files show "Preview unavailable for this file" in the thumbnail in the grid view.  And if I try to import them i get a dialog box with a message that says Import Results > Some import operations were not performed. > There is a problem with the video file (1) > [Filename].AVI
I am currently using windows 8 and I have imported video to this catalog before from the same camera.  The video plays fine in the video players(windows media player, quicktime, and the new video app on windows 8 that is the default player in the OS).
I went throught the http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/troubleshoot-video-issues-lightroom-4.html and did all those suggestions.  I am now turning to the forums before I reach out to support.
Has anyone else run into this issue or a simililar one that may be able to give me a workaround or solution?
I am a cloud subscriber and all my programs are up to date.  Windows is current, all players are current, and this specific catalog has .AVI files in it from the same camera and the firmware on the camera has never been updated since I started shooting video.

  • Importing Video from DVD to Edit in iMovie?

I need to import video from a DVD to edit in iMovie. What's the best way to go about this?
    Thanks,
    Ted
MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Also own an iBook, G3 500mhz, 10gb drive

DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (19$) + Streamclip (free)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast 6/7/8 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    * connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
none of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

  • Can I import video from a Firewire camcorder using the Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter?

I have an older camcorder that has a firewire interface. My new iMac does not have any firewire ports. Can I import video from the camcorder using a Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter or is the Thunderbold adapter only used for hard drives and displays?

Rather than an adapter, I would suggest you purchase a 4 pin to 9 pin Firewire 800 cable to run from the camera to the Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter. Those FW 400 to 800 adapters frequently do not work so well for importing video in my experience.
The Firewire cables are pretty inexpensive if you get them online. For example try Monoprice.

  • Can I use Apple DVI to Video Adapter to import video to my macbook pro?

I was wondering if i could use the Apple DVI to Video Adapter to import videos from my camcorder that don't have usb or firewire but have a S-video. to my laptop? and import them to iMovie

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If you mean without internet, then yes, providing it isn't a purchased video (The Apple TV may need to verify authorisation). If you mean without a network, then no.

  • What Cable do I need to Import Video from a Mini DV Camera?

I have a canon xh a1, it calls for a IEEE1394 cable, I have the new mac desktops, I have no Idea what cable i need in order to import video?
    Any ideas?

Or better still - this cable from monoprice.com. Only $5.52 compared to the Belkin cable at $29.95. I use these cables all the time, they are very well made and work perfectly. There's nothing magical about Belkin that makes their cable worth nearly 6x the price of the monoprice cables.

  • I am using IMovie 11 with a new iMac.  Unable to import video from a Panasonic PV-GS400 mini-DV camcorder using a Firewire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter which is then connected to a Thunderbolt to Firewire 800 adapter.

How can I get iMovie to recognize my Panasonic PV-GS400 as a device so I can import video to my iMac?  I have a FireWire IEEE 1394 400 cable connected to the camcorder.  Since my new iMac has only Thunderbolt ports, I purchased a Firewire 400 to 800 adapter to connect to the cable.  I also purchased a FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt adapter to connect to the computer.  My camcarder is still not recognized.

I would suggest that you try a 9 pin to 4 pin Firewire Cable along with the Firewire to Thunderbolt adapter.
Those Firewire 400 to 800 adapters do not seem to work well with iMovie.
The 9 pin to 4 pin cables are available at reasonable prices here, for example.
