Importing video taking over 5 hours

I was trying to make an Elfen Lied AMV, so the videos I'm importing aren't that long.
I had iMovie '9 before, but it would constantly freeze and so I decided to upgrade it to imovie '11 which no longer freezes for me. However, instead of freezing it just makes importing a video take ridiculously long. In Imovie '9 it would take about 10 seconds then crash I'd have to force quit, reopen and the video will be there ready for me to use. In Imovie '11 it has already been over 30 minutes and it's saying it will take about 5 more hours.
The video I'm importing is the exact same one as before. Like the very same episode of Elfen Lied, so there is absolutely no other changes other than switching imovie's
Obviously I can't really do a whole lot with it when videos take most of the day just to get onto imovie, and I have another 13 episodes to do as well and I really wanted to do it today.
So is there anything that I can do to speed up the movie importing please?

I would try removing and reinstalling all the Apple software by:
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP

  • Video taking 40 hours to encode

Ok, so I finished editing a video and I went to export it. Sent it to AME, and the Estimated Remaining Time said it had 40 hours to complete. On my old computer this would've been normal, but now I have it on my much better computer so this makes no ******* sense. The specs for the computer I am currently using to export are...
    OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-M68MT-S2
CPU: AMD FX-4100 3.6GHz Quad Core
    RAM: 8GB DDR3
    Storage: 1TB SATA HDD 7200RPM
GPU: EVGA nVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Superclocked 2GB
    Power: Coolmax ZX-700 700W 80 Plus
Now I'm no expert with these new fangled computational calculators, but I think my system is good enough to run Premiere. It's also weird because the final size of the video (according to Premiere) is 873MB. I've exported 7GB videos that took less time. Is it something with the video? This is the media I used...
    AVI video, 14:19 long, 1024x768, 280000kbps video bitrate, 1500kbps audio bitrate, 6.55GB
    WAV audio, 14:58 long, 1500kbps bitrate, 164MB
    GIF, 500x500, 43.5KB
PNG, 3353x3429, 4.11MB, on two video tracks, had following effects:
                                                                                                                   Crop
                                                                                                                   Compound Blur
                                                                                                                   Black & White
                                                                                                                   Sharpen
                                                                                                                   Horizontal Flip (on one)
Also, these are the sequence settings I was using...
    Timebase: 29.97fps
    Framesize: 1366x768
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixel (1.0)
    Fields: No Fields (Progressive Scan)
    Display Format: 30fps Drop-Frame Timecode
    Audio Sample Rate: 48000 Hz
    Audio Display Format: Audio Samples
    Preview File Format: Microsoft AVI
    Codec: Intel IYUV codec
I'm exporting the video using the YouTube 1080p 29.97fps preset.
This is probably way too much info that is completely useless, but I figured I might as well give all the info I can. Does anyone know why my video is taking so long to export?

In addition to what Steven said, imagine your workflow on this computer.
You have a FX-4100 CPU. It does not have hyper threading, only 4 cores, lacks full support for SSE 4.1+ extensions, which are used extensively during encoding if they are available.
You have only 8 GB memory, which is about bare minimum.
You indicate only a single disk for all the editing stuff.
You start with video material with 1024x768 in a 1366x768 sequence which you uprez to 1920x1080.
You use PNG's with 3353x3429 resolution.
You export to a highly compressed format with a final size of 873 MB.
All these resolution changes and PAR changes need to be calculated by a CPU that lacks hyper threading, that lacks the sorely needed SSE extensions and it has to do that in a very restricted memory space, using a single disk, that is needed for media, media cache, previews, project, export, pagefile (which is used extensively) and Windows house keeping. It is like a very popular nightclub that attracts lots of people every day, but has only one narrow single door for entry, departure and deliveries. That causes traffic jams, with long queues of people waiting to get in and similar queues of people waiting to leave. That single narrow door is like your single disk.
The waiting is further aggravated by the doorman who has to direct traffic at the door and he is hampered by his arthritis, so he can't move very quickly, like your CPU. Another factor is the very limited space of the vestibule, like your memory. Finally, when people are squeezed into that tiny vestibule, it causes further delays to leave your coat or retrieve it, like the compression you apply.
Under ideal conditions your system would be around 6 - 8 times slower than a fast system, but with your workflow is may well be 12 - 15 times slower. In that case a fast system with the same workflow would take around 2.5 to 3 hours for the same encoding, which is not at all unreasonable, given the fantasizing you require the CPU to do by first - as Steven put so eloquently - inventing pixels that were not in the original picture and then compressing each frame with all its imaginary content to such a large degree.
You can improve on your workflow by first reducing the PNG's to a size that more closely resembles your sequence setting, and exporting to 1366x768 like Steven said.

  • Why is installing 3 applications from a creative cloud packager taking over an hour?

    Dear Adobe community,
I am trying to install 3 Creative Cloud applications, (Illustrator, photoshop, and indesign) on a Windows 7 Hpz420 workstation from a USB hard drive and it is taking over an hour to complete.  i created a package of the 3 applications using the CC packager and move the package over to a USB drive.  Then I start the installer exe it runs and completes, but the installation takes over an hour and 1/2.  My installation of Creative Suite 5.5 from a similar USB hard drive was much quicker, about 1/2 hour.
I don't want to use a remote installer like AAMEE. Is there a different way to create a package that is more efficient? I also don't want to redown the applications everytime I need to install them on a machine and utilize my network bandwidth.
Is this normal ?  I have rebuilt the package with the same results and have installed CC on two different machines with the same results.  I did not see anything in the forums about the installation being so slow so I am concern that I have missed something or that my results are not normal.
    Your help is appreciated.
    Mike

My "Gaming" computer (Toshiba Qosmio X-70A, w/ 32GB RAM, i7 Intel processors @2.7 Ghz, w/ 250GB SSD, 750GB high-speed 7,200 RPM primary & 1TB SSD/HD hybrid drive) was purchase specifically, by me, to learn & use the Adobe "Cloud" Apps with.  This computer is a beast. <And - yet> it takes me days, literally <DAYs> to download all the apps I am using/studying.
I (last week) recently had my 1st "total meltdown" w/ Win 8.1-Pro (what a total P.O.S. "OS" this is!) & have faced the daunting task of re-installing ALL of the Adobe SW available over the "Creative Cloud". This will take days (w/ a direct DSL link to a Cat-6 cable; not on Wi-Fi) to "re-install" all the "Creative Cloud" software I was learning/working with. Insane. I have never seen anything like this!
So, "DLi" - I agree! Adobe's SW (& HW) Engineers don't give a stuff about your time nor mine.
The only things that are of importance to them are (#1 - "Keeping their jobs") ... metering out their "Creative Cloud" in a manner which allows them to investigate EVERY byte on your computer/server/device BEFORE allowing you to use it . . . (hmmm....I do wonder how many dollars per month that information is worth to the NSA / per seat)?) ... and making it "a nightmare" for the user.
    What an insult!
What an horrific slap in the face to each & every one of Adobe's "Creative Cloud" paying customers! (Uhhhm, that'd be you and that'd be me, too).

  • Playhead info for imported video clips is static/constant in iMovie 9 as I scroll over the clips. Is it possible to make it display correct info?

HI, I have been importing videos clips from a SD card to iMovie 09. These clips are analyzed for animal behavior and the timing information for a specific event is critical for proper analyses. Most of the times, the imported clips display correct timing information for a given frame as I scroll over the clips. However, sometimes, some clips show a static or constant timestamp for all the frames in a clip and the timing information doesn't change in the playhead as I scroll over different frames.
For such clips, I was wondering if it's possible to display correct timing information for the frames, and how? Since I only need frame timing info relative to the starting point, I am open to a solution that involves readjusting starting timestamp.
Thank you so much for your time and help.

    Several ways to do this.
I would scrub to the in point of the audio you want to change, then drag all the way back to the beginning of the clip. Then EDIT/SPLIT CLIP or right-click/Split Clip. Then go to the out point of the audio clip and drag to the right to the end of the clip. Then Edit/Split Clip. The clip in the middle should have your 25 minutes of audio.

  • Iphoto has been importing photos for over an hour and i can't get it to stop. can't stop importing and can't shut down computer.

iphoto has been importing photos for over n hour and I can't get it to stop.  Can't get out of iphoto and can't shut down computer.

iPhoto works best when the source (Pictures folder) is on a different disk drive than the iPhoto Library is on.
And you need to have enough free disk space to work with, the faster the better.
Also, do not keep your media folders and those in your home folder on the same drive as the system, also another bottleneck.
Until or unless you have everything on 1400MB/sec SSD PCIe controller, you want
    System boot drive
Media and data folders and such
    scratch
    backup
    etc
I put iPhoto on an SSD off an SSD PCIe Sonnet Tempo card
If you stop- it, you will need to trash the Library it was creating.
Reading and writing to/from the same hard drive will be slow.
You don't mention which Mac, or how large you are trying to import etc
Also the support page and link to the iPhoto Commuinity is off this page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/iphoto
Take a look in Activity Monitor. See what the % being used for iPhoto, how many pageouts, how much free space on the various disk drives, and how much RAM do you have installed?

Aperture isn't importing videos from iPhone, only photos. I've tried plugged in and over wifi. Help?

How did you transfer the photos from your other iPhone? If you did it by importing them from the old phone to a computer and then used iTunes to sync them back to the new phone, then you would delete them by syncing again using iTunes but this time change the selection of which photos are to be synced. Each time you sync using iTunes, it sets the non-Camera Roll photos on the phone to match the current settings/selection in iTunes.

did a backup then a restore, windows 7 to windows 8.1 but non of the keytags got posted to the pictures. they did come over as tags but all were empty. any solution?
Please describe in more details what you did. The usual and recommended way to backup and restore is the built-in method of the Organizer:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/kb/backup-restore-move-catalog-photoshop.html
    Was that what you did?
Your keywords (tags) are by stored by default in the catalog. You can also 'Write metadata to files' if you wish, but an Organizer restore does restore the tags of the files in the restored catalog; that is only necessary if you re-import the pictures in a new catalog or if you use another backup software.
they did come over as tags but all were empty. any solution?
Do you mean you got the hierarchy of categories and tags restored in the keyword panel, but that none of those keywords were assigned to pictures?

When I import videos taken with my iPhone 4S to my Windows PC, some of the landscape videos are upside down and all of the portrait videos are rotated 90 degrees.  It makes a difference depending on what position I hold the Iphone when taking videos.  Help!!!!

Sometimes syncing will have problems with very large video files like this.  I'm not sure you will be able to overcome this, but if the videos are important enough you may consider purchasing 3rd party software such as Touch Copy to transfer them.

help how can i stop it from importing the duplicates?

my iphoto library database was corrupted with one image taking over every other image on the database
What exactly do you mean by that? Do you mean one thumbnail only was visible in the iPhoto Window? What? This is the sort of thing that's fixed easily by an iPhoto rebuild. Gives us some more information and we may be able to help with that - iPhoto version and a description of exactly what's happening will help.
i ticked no to importing duplicate images and yet it is still importing many duplicates including the photo which took over my old iphoto library
A couple of thoughts here: If the iPhoto Library is corrupted and Aperture is importing from this damaged Library well you can't expect that it will all go easily, can you?
The iPhoto Library contains two versions of edited photos. Are you sure that you're not seeing the second version?

  • Importing video from Sony 120GB HDD Camcorder

Looking for help on importing video from Sony 120GB HDD Camcorder.
I recently purchased a new imac (1st mac) and imported the stored video on my Sony 120GB HDD camcorder. I would estimate that this is approximately 60-80 GB worth of video on the camcorder but when I imported this has become over 800GB on my imac and basically fills the HD.
My question is - is this normal or am I doing something wrong.
    Cheers

Unfortunately the video from the current crop of High Def capable cameras use a really highly compressed file format to save video. The one most used is called AVCHD and it can really save a lot of space ON THE CAMERA if you like to shoot at the highest resolution. However to edit that video, it needs to be decompressed so that iMovie can preview it, and edit it accurately down to the individual video frame level (1/30th of a second). So the short answer is you're not doing anything wrong, those video clips can expand up to 40-75GBytes per hour of video after they are imported into the iMovie Events folders. However it is entirely possible to store the iMovie Events folders on an additional external hard drive. And that's usuallly the best solution for anyone quickly running out of space.

  • Time Machine taking over my external HD

Is there a way to stop Time Machine from taking over my external HD? I have a 1T for video and photos and previously used Retrospect for the backups. It doesn't do it automatically with the iMac Intel Processor (older version of Retrospect) so I thought Time Machine would be the answer (instead of upgrading Retrospect). However, I am not willing to give up my entire HD to Time Machine - I only want my documents backed up and then the changes to files backed up with the previous backup deleted. Is there any way to do this? I've already excluded all the apps, etc. and still end up with huge backups. And according to the info about Time Machine, it's going to keep taking over the HD until it is full!!! The Retrospect backups for the past 3 months are 3G for the original backup of documents and the current backup.
In 24 hours with Time Machine I already have 75G and counting!!!
Or do I just need to get a 2nd external HD with less memory and dedicate it to Time Machine?

Or do I just need to get a 2nd external HD with less memory and dedicate it to Time Machine?
Well, OP is considering this option, and it one way to go TM-dedicated TM external. Really their options depend on how much free space is present on their Mac internal and current external. Disk Utility erase/ partition options will reformat, quite obviously, but even if they have just one external available it is usually possible to backup video and other stored files to say DVD media while they reorganize/ reformat their backup drive.
Another choice is to turn TM off.
Due to the magic of shareware there are now third-party utilities that allow you to alter the frequency of Time Machine Back up.
