Importing video to a folder or HD

Sorry if this is kinda simple. I've been trying to figure out how to download video to a file before I import in into IMovie. I would like to use the same clips in several projects. Currently I can only load the clips into IMovie from my camera and then I am unable to "find" the clips again once the are in the project. Is there a way to do this?
Thanks

Welcome to the forum!
iMovie HD project cannot "share" a single media file, e.g. a file that contains a video clip. The file must be imported separately to each project. (That does NOT requiring importing to each from the camera. See below.)
All the media files of a project -- pictures, video and audio files -- are stored inside the iMovie HD project itself. Although the project looks and acts like a file, it's actually a special kind of folder called a "package".
To peek inside the package, Control-click on the package icon and choose "Show Package Contents" from the popUp menu that appears. The media files you have imported are stored inside the Media folder.
(You'll find other interesting things in the package too, including special QuickTime movies -- called reference movies -- that play the project timeline. They don't contain video or audio data of their, just pointers to the files in the Media folder.)
Don't change anything inside the package. This is territory controlled by iMovie and iMovie expects to find everything exactly as it left it. Renaming files or folders, for example, is verbotten.
It's a snap to copy a media file from one project to another, and it doesn't require digging around inside the package. One way is to Copy the clip in Project A and Paste it into Project B. Another is to drag the clip from Project A to Project B.
Note that copying a clip copies the entire source file of the clip. To avoid iMovie copying that source file more than one time when copying multiple clips, copy all the clips that share the same source file together. (Or simpler, Copy and Paste ALL the clips you want at the same time. Then iMovie sorts out which files to copy.)

I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this? I even tried deleting iMovie, bought a new copy and installed it, but the folder "iPhoto Videos" is still there and I can't get new clips loaded to iMovie, especially where I want them. Please help.

The iPhoto Videos do occasionally have problems. I've seen a lot of people write messages to this Discussion group describing similar problems. The only thing that seems to get around this problem is to pull the video clips out of iPhoto then import them directly into iMovie. Once the troubles with iPhoto Videos starts, I haven't yet seen anyone write back with something that they did to fix it.
The most difficult part of doing this is the movies in iPhoto might be a little difficult to track down. But you can create a smart alum that does that for you. Go to iPhoto > File Menu > New Smart Album:
Set the first pulldown menu to keyword, second to contains, then in the last box type Movie with a capital 'M'. Then click OK. This smart album more or less does as search of the whole iPhoto Library and only displays items that match your search tearm of "Movie" exactly. In that smart album then you can find the original Movies you want to move out of iPhoto and into iMovie, <CTRL> click on the Movie clip, then choose Reveal in Finder. That will jump you out of iPhoto temporarily and into the iPhoto Library folder. From there you can move that movie file to the desktop. Move all the clips you want, once they're all collected up go to iMovie and go to the File Menu > Import Files. Then point it to the desktop where you moved your video clips.
This will put all those videos into an Event folder in iMovie and bypass iPhoto Videos altogether.

  • Aperture Does Not Import Videos using IMPORT FOLDER AS PROJECTS

SOLVED - Aperture 3.2.1 does not import videos using "Import Folder as Project"
After 2 days of trying to figure this out (actually around 2 hours total) I've finally managed to import all my photos & videos last year. 200 Gigs 54,000 files. First few tries resulted with referenced photos only, no videos. I had no luck with Google, even tried moving a couple of .plist as mentioned from this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11188017?messageID=11188017#11188017 - this worked for some but not for me. Some issues were solved by NOT selecting "Raw Only", this will cause Aperture to skip your videos.
Thank you to these people who took time to share. In return I am posting my micro contribution to the Aperture Community. FILE > SWITCH TO LIBRARY > then create a new library. You should be able to import your photos with videos in folders.
I hope this gets into Google soon. :-)

, I see only the file, where these photos are, not the photo names or thumbs inside the file (Aperture import path).
You mean in the Aperture Import panel the folder, where the jpegs should be, is empty?
Then you may have excluded jpegs from import in your "Import Settings".
Check the above settings in the "Import Settings" options in the "Import Window". I.e-make sure the Raw+Jpeg Pairs option is set to "Both", even if you do not import raws.
After reassembled all the programs to a new hard drive in Mac Pro
Is this new Harddrive your system volume? And are the jpegs you wat to import located on this drive? Or are the on another external volume? If yes, how is this volume formatted?
Have you checked the permissions and ownership of the jpegs?

  • Importing videos: rename uses correct date but sorted to incorrect date folder

    Hello
I know there is an issue with importing photos directly from a device, that's not what's happening here.
I  import photos from my camera's SD card and I rename them as they import.  Photos and video are both renamed correctly, but only the photos are sorted correctly.  The videos seem to sort based on the additional time zone adjustment, so mostly they end up in the folder for the next day (corresponding to an additional +12 hr, as though lightroom was adding the time zone correction to the local time rather than to the GMT time).  In gallery view I need to sort by name in order to sort by capture time because the renaming is the only feature that reads the correct capture time.  Sorting by capture time uses the capture time displayed in the metadata (in the right panel in the library module), which seems unrelated to the capture time.  I think it might have somethign to do with the import time, but it doesn't match any of the properties in windows explorer.
    For example:
    I took a video at 2015-02-07 1509, and that time/date appears in it's name
It was taken in New Zealand in a +12 hr time zone (so GMT time 2015-02-07 0309, and if we apply the time zone correction to the local time it would be 2015-02-08 0309)
When is was auto-sorted during the import it ended up in the 2015-02-08 folder
The lightroom metadata capture time is listed as 2015-02-08 2158
The windows explorer date modified is 2015-02-08 1509 (the correct capture time)
The windows explorer date created and date accessed are 2015-02-08 11:27
Note that the camera has GPS and photos are GPS tagged, so they are linked to the time zone.  As far as I can tell the videos are not GPS tagged (no GPS coordinates in properties in windows explorer).
I'd like for the metadata to show the correct capture time and for the videos to be sorted by that correct capture time.  Lightroo obviosuly has the ability to read the capture time correctly, because it does so for the naming.  I have no idea what's going on here and would be heaps grateful for help from the wonderful adobe forums community (you guys haven't let me down yet, you beat any customer support line I've ever tried).
PS: This is the first of a few issues I'm having with lightroom and capture time and  videos, so if you like a challenge stay tuned as I post them all up.  I'm still going through them but briefly:
    - similar video-only issues with videos from another camera: I have to double check to see if the details are the same
    - I'm having time zone issues with screenshots and saved snapchat photos from my iphone even when they are imported from a separate folder
    - accessing the capture time of iphone screenshots/snapchat photos: they get renamed based on a capture time (either the correct or time zone offset, but always something meaningful and not a blank or random time) but lightroom won't display the capture time metadata when looking at only those images, making the time zone adjustment very difficult

LR's support for video metadata is incomplete and buggy.  Add your vote and opinion to this thread: Lightroom: Metadata applied to videos in Lightroom isn't available in other applications.

  • Iphoto 9.5.1 will not import videos with .mpg extension from my pictures folder and keep getting a OSStatus error-54. Is there a way I can import such videos to the iphone library?

iphoto 9.5.1 will not import videos with .mpg extension from my pictures folder and keep getting a OSStatus error-54. Is there a way I can import such videos to the iphone library? Pls help.

This is what that error means:
    -54
    permErr
Software lock on file; Not a subscriber [permissions error on file open]
Download and launch  BatChmod.  Put the videos into a subfolder and drag that folder containing the video files into the Batchmod window.  Make sure you are the owner and have R,W, X access as well as the group.  Everyone will have R only.
Check the Change ownership and privileges, Unlock and Apply to enclosed boxes and then click on the Apply button.  When done try importing the files again.

  • Importing Videos into LR3

I seem to recall some notes that LR3 will now import video clips into a catalog. It also seems the comments stated you can't watch or edit the clips, but you can at least catalog them in LR.
Tonight I tried importing one, but when I directed Lightroom to the correct folder, it did not recognize the video clip stored there. The test clip was captured on a Canon Vixia HD camcorder and saved as AVCHD in an MTS extension on a PC. Some of the new Nikon cameras are now capable of recording video clips. Not sure what format they are saved in on the cards. Is there something I need to know about importing my videos from a folder on my hard drive?
Is this feature a little ahead of its time and not quite ready? I was hoping to test it tonight and was curious if I double clicked on a clip whether either LR or my Windows system would play the clip.
    Thanks in advance,
    M. Jackson

In addition to its limited support for video formats, LR 3 also is limited in its ability to handle video metadata -- you can't change the capture time and you can't write metadata (capture time, caption, keywords, rating, etc.) back to the files or sidecars.

  • Moved my library to an external hard drive. Now I get this message when trying to import video: Cannot start ingest because there is no storage location set. Please set one under Storage in Preferences and try again.

I recently moved my iMovie Library and all of its contents to an external hard drive.  I then erased the library and all of its contents from my iMac HD and created a new library.  Now when I try to import video from my DV camera I get this message: Cannot start ingest because there is no storage location set. Please set one under Storage in Preferences and try again.  There is no way to set a storage location in Preferences.  I have chosen an Event in the middle drop down box.  But it still will not import.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

My iTunes library is set up the way I said in the top post and works totally fine.
Yes, and that is the default structure to which I was referring.  iTunes will organize it that way automatically unless people do start changing settings (in which case they should know what they are doing and how iTunes works with library files and media structure.)
Both ways work, the advantages of mine would be that should iTunes try looking fo a library, it will always be in the default location.
It makes people think they have to change media location in preferences.  They do not unless they want to relocate media only and leave other things on their internal drive (in which case there is no point in copying library files to the external, and you certainly wouldn't want to then delete them from your internal).
Downside is that then should someone move their iTunes library to anther computer they need to remember to get those library files on the external hard drive.
Just copy the whole iTunes folder and it will get the library files to the other drive in one step, along with all the other files.
Your post has good stuff but it makes a move appear intimidating and look like people have to do a lot of organizing to move the collection.  It also throws in  extra steps (namely altering preference settings) that could cause confusion or even make a mess of things.  If people leave iTunes to default preference settings (which most people do) the move summarizes into a short line:  Copy a folder and hold an extra button the next time you start iTunes.
Note that the instructions in the link I provided earlier do also include many steps, but those are to ensure that everybody does have it all organized correctly before simply copying the iTunes folder.  In the end it is just a simple action.

  • Importing Video to iMovie 11 Causes Entire Computer to Crash

Hi. I must say up front that I am not very Mac saavy, so I apologize in advance.
I am trying to import video from a Canon Vixia HFS200 camera in to my iMovie 11 on my iMac. I'm running OS X version 10.6.8. The other details are in the error report that I've pasted below. When I turn on the video camera, I select sync then select "Computer/Printer" for USB connection type. It will then open my iPhoto and upload photos, and then it will open my iMovie (if not already open). It can transfer to iPhoto just fine. However, when it opens the transfer window in iMovie, it stalls with an empty transfer screen and then I get the gray box of death telling me that my computer has crashed and I must re-start it.
I would appreciate any advice on this issue. Thanks!

According to the link below I got from the Canon Canada website, apparently there is mentioned software to retreive images and videos from your camera.
    http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/7/0300004027/01/IB66_EN.pdf
Anyhow, since you had it working before with iMovie 11, I am suspecting that it somehow got corrupted when the mounted volume (your camera) somehow got disconnected due to inadequate battery power.  Which was why Canon recommended people use an AC adapter for this or a fresh battery before a major transfer of movie clips.  When mounted volumes disconnect abruptly for whatever reasons, iMovie 11 goes into beserk mode trying to restore that connection resulting in crashes or slowdowns.
To restore iMovie 11 back to where it was.
You need to delete iMovie's plist and cache files, 2 files located in your Home/Libary folder
    com.apple.iMovieapp.plist (document)
    com.apple.iMovieapp        (folder)
After this, you can either do 2 things.  One is run disk repair utility and execute repair permissions on the drive that iMovie resides (probably your main boot drive) or download a free utility called OnyX which is a free OSX maintenance software to do that plus some extras including clearing caches, which sometimes are the causes of system crashes.
It is available from http://www.titanium.free.fr/index.php and it will help repair permissions and clear caches.  Please download the appropriate version for your OSX (Snow Leopard).
Once that is done, reboot your computer and run iMovie 11.  Connect the cable to the camera and computer and do your import.  Make sure you have a fresh charged battery on your Canon.  This should work.
Regarding Apple Care.  The easiest way to deal with this is deal your issues with a Genius at the Apple Store.  They will help you with the registeration of Apple Care.  Just because you bought Apple Care does not necessarily mean you are registered and you should register it as soon as you got the system and Apple Care together.
Apple is a good system, but in the quest of making the system super friendly, it can sometimes be daunting to get it working again because unlike the PC, the interface itself makes it challenging to do low level stuff.

  • Problem importing video from a DV camera into the new imovie 10.0?  I have a Sony DCR TRV17 connected via Firewire port that worked in 9.0.9 but not under 10.0...

I have a Sony DCR TRV17 that I used to pass through VCR tape video via Firewire port to my Mac Pro under Imovie 9.0.9 without an issue.   Now under Imovie 10.0 the video shows in the import window, I can start recording yet when I stop recording the recorded clips do not show up anywhere.  The movie file I'm creating still indicates that I still need to import video.   Anyone having similar problems?

    Hey Dave,
I had this issue only once before but was lucky enought to find it was a specific event causing the import to freeze. It took me some time to isolate the problem though. I would recommend letting it sit there for some time before you try any troubleshooting. Larger libraries can take long periods of time to update.
This is a good thread for this issue.  I would first try removing the iMovie.plist as elikness mentions.
    1. Open Finder
    2. Click on "Go" in the menu bar.
    3. Click on Go To Folder on the dropdown menu.
    4. Type "~/Library/Preferences/" in the text field and click Go.
    5. Find the com.apple.iMovie(some number).plist file and move it to Trash.
Quit and relaunch iMovie to see if this took care of the issue before attempting the next step. If you're still having an issue then you can try what I needed to do which is isolating the problem event.
    1. Open Finder.
    2. Go to the Movies folder. You should see iMovie Events here.
If you have a larger event library I'd recommend renaming the iMovie Events folder to say, "iMovie Events COPY". Then create a new empty folder named “iMovie Events”. When you launch iMovie 9.0.9 all events will be missing at this point. Quit iMovie if it is open. Then you can either drag each event from iMovie Events COPY to iMovie Events or you can select and drag several at a time. Each time you drag an event folder back into the new iMovie Events folder launch iMovie 9.0.9 to see if you are having the same issue. Wash and repeat until either you have found the problem event or you have imported all events.
If you find the problem event you can reimport the clip from iMovie 9.0.9 by going to File > Import > Movies and navigating to that events iMovie Original Movies folder to find the clip.
    Hope this helps!

  • Can somebody help me? Can't import videos that are already on my hard drive

i'm not the most technologically adept person. When it comes to iTunes, i plain stupid.
for some reason i can't import videos on my hard drive.
they are set to open in iTunes and if i double click on them, iTunes comes up and switches to the video screen, but it does not show the name in the list or play the video or anything. It's driving me nuts. Especially since i was considering buying an iPod video in the near future. But theres no point in even bothering if i can't get the videos into iTunes!!! If you know how to help my situtation or have any good tips let me know!!

You do not use the 'Import' function under the File Menu to import P2 card content because the video content is still in its native form. For example, my Panasonic HPX 171 produces .MXF video files (amongst all the other files and folders within the overall heirarchy).
In order to access the copied P2 information you have to Log & Transfer it, as if it were a camera plugged into the computer. This process then converts the MXF P2 files into a Quicktime format that the Final Cut application can read and work with.
Take note that when archiving a P2 card as you did it is imperative that ALL the other files and folders are copied and saved. In other words, the entire 'CONTENTS' folder. It is this 'CONTENTS' folder that you navigate to within Log & Transfer when you want to import to FCP.

    How do I fix this?
I've tried to import video content from my 5d mark II and it will not import video.

If it works in a different user acoutn, and you don't want to change accounts, the question really becomes, what is different between the two accounts. The only two differences, as far as Adobe and Lightroom are concerned, are the application preferences and the catalog.
The preference files store the settings for the program. These files are created on first launch and are updated each  time you close the application with the current state of the settings. Each user account has their own copy of these files. If you delete these files, then on next launch a new default set of files are created. When you create a new user account and lauch Lightroom, a new default set of these files is created for this account. If you delete these files on your main account, then on the next launch of Lightroom, a new set will be created. So as far as these files are concerned, Lightroom will be the same on both user accounts.
The catalog stores information of the images you work with in Lightroom. Each user account also gets it's own catalog, which is created on first launch as well. If you create a new catalog on your main account, then this is another way you can force Lightroom to be the same on both accounts.
If making the preferences and the catalog the same on both accounts does not fix the behavior, this mean that the cause of the problem is coming from outside of Lightroom itself. The two main categories of where things could be going wrong from this point is third-party applications and permissions.
Third-party applications, just like Lightroom itself, can have settings that are unique, causing them to behave differently between different user accounts. These different behaviors can mean that on one account they behave in such a way as to interfere with another application like Lightroom. We don't know of any program in particular that could be causing this behavior, nor what setting within such an application would be the root cause. In cases like these it is simply best to shut everything off and test Lightroom in a clean enviorment (similar to testing Lightroom in a new user account).
Every file and folder on your computer has a set of permissions for what individual users and groups of users (and the applications being run by those users) are allowed to do, such as reading, writting, or deleting. It is possible that there is a difference between the permissions for your regular user account and the new user account (which gets default settings for all files and folders) that restricts Lightroom's ability to use/read files.

  • Importing video from 8mm video camera to iMac

Hi. I guess this topic may have been aired before but I would be very grateful for some help. I want to import video to iMovie on my iMac from my old 8mm Panasonic video camera. iMovie help section covers this as follows
"To convert video in 8 mm, Hi-8, VHS, or SVHS format for use in iMovie HD, you need a special converter with standard S-Video and RCA input/output ports for video and audio, and a FireWire (IEEE 1394) input/output port."
So do I just need a cable to connect camera and Mac, or is there some other bit of conversion kit I need? If just a cable any ideas where I can get one from (preferably UK)? I have not had any luck with this so far. Thanks for any ideas

I finally tried importing the 8mm tapes from my Sony TRV-330 into iMovie HD and it worked. Really seems strange to me why Apple would not make iMovie '08 backwards compatible with analog 8mm tapes imported using a digital camcorder.
I doubt that Apple made the program less compatible with your camcorder on purpose. More like, in their effort to add compatibility with AVCHD, HDD, and DVD camcorders, something was changed which affects you and a number of other users. Given time, I expect they will locate the problem and fix it. The quest is, who long will it take. Be sure to post a feedback regarding your problem. They people who do this, the more likely they will take note and find a solution to this inconsistency between iMovie HD and iMovie '08.
I'm wondering if I can skip the second step if the video is already on my hard drive, or does it need to be saved in iMovie HD format for iMovie '08 to be able to import the video at all?
Well, I probably would have gone about it somewhat differently. If you don't plan to do any editing in iMovie HD, I would probably have tried VIDI (free) first. It is a dedicated DV "capture" utility of about the same vintage as your camcorder. It should allow you to import/store your DV files where you want in "plain sight" of the Finder rather than in iMovie HD's project package. It still imports in real time so no savings here.
Then you would have the option of using them in any editor or even making preliminary cuts of your files in either QT Pro, MPEG Streamclip, or any similar utility. The idea here is to discard everything you know you won't want and save time when it comes to generating "thumbnails" (which sometimes seems to take forever) in iMovie '08 when you actually move or copy the files into iMovie '08 which should take almost no time at all if the source files are on the same drive as your events folder and you use the "Move" rather than "Copy" option. (I.e., a "Move" action only requires updating the VTOC as to the files physical location via a changed path as opposed to a "Copy" which actually has to re-write the data to your hard drive. This can save a fair amount of time if done right. Unfortunately, there is no way to get around "thumbnail" generation.
Another possible tip would be to import a series of moderately sized files to iMovie '08 rather than a single, large one. This can save time in the event that an associated thumbnail file becomes corrupted and you have to force iMovie '08 to regenerate them at some later time. (I.e this seems to be a common problem for some users, but I have only experienced it once, myself, thankfully. ("Knock on wood.")
In any event, that is about all I can think of for now. Good Luck.
