Importing video with chapters into iDVD

I'm editing a video of a concert and trying to separate the different pieces into chapters. I used iMovie 10.0.4 on my computer running 10.9.4 to edit, and added markers, then tried using iDVD 7.1.2 on an older computer running 10.7.5 to create the menus and burn the disc. Then I discovered that the "marker" option in iMovie doesn't actually create a chapter. I tried a couple freeware programs to add chapters so that iDVD would recognize the different scenes, but no matter what I try, when I drag the video onto the "Chapters" submenu I've created in iDVD, it shows the entire video only, and not the individual chapters.
I don't have the budget to buy Final Cut Pro or Toast or any other fancy programs, but I'm thinking of trying "Thinker DVD Creator Pro" from the App Store, which is $20. Anybody have experience with this one?
I'm writing here to ask for tips, tricks, or wisdom from people who have done this stuff before and have a preferred program or workaround. Please let me know if there are any more tech specs or details I should give.
Thanks!
Amelia

Hi
I used iMovie 10.0.4 on my computer
It doesn't have - Chapter mark function.
Apple's idea of upgrade - is in some cases - taking away functions. There was a way round this by importing Movie into GarageBand and setting Chapters here. But GarageBand was also UPGRADED
So using Toast etc will not help - iMovie'13 (version 10.0.x) can not do this.
I would rather use
- iMovie'11 (version 9.0.x) - or
- FinalCut - any version (that might work on Your Mac)

I imported videos from photo into iMovie when I set up iMovie (obvious mistake) and now iMovie doesn't work properly, nor can I move specific videos into a folder where I want them. How do I fix this? I even tried deleting iMovie, bought a new copy and installed it, but the folder "iPhoto Videos" is still there and I can't get new clips loaded to iMovie, especially where I want them. Please help.

The iPhoto Videos do occasionally have problems. I've seen a lot of people write messages to this Discussion group describing similar problems. The only thing that seems to get around this problem is to pull the video clips out of iPhoto then import them directly into iMovie. Once the troubles with iPhoto Videos starts, I haven't yet seen anyone write back with something that they did to fix it.
The most difficult part of doing this is the movies in iPhoto might be a little difficult to track down. But you can create a smart alum that does that for you. Go to iPhoto > File Menu > New Smart Album:
Set the first pulldown menu to keyword, second to contains, then in the last box type Movie with a capital 'M'. Then click OK. This smart album more or less does as search of the whole iPhoto Library and only displays items that match your search tearm of "Movie" exactly. In that smart album then you can find the original Movies you want to move out of iPhoto and into iMovie, <CTRL> click on the Movie clip, then choose Reveal in Finder. That will jump you out of iPhoto temporarily and into the iPhoto Library folder. From there you can move that movie file to the desktop. Move all the clips you want, once they're all collected up go to iMovie and go to the File Menu > Import Files. Then point it to the desktop where you moved your video clips.
This will put all those videos into an Event folder in iMovie and bypass iPhoto Videos altogether.

  • Importing photos from iphoto into idvd

I am trying to import photos from iphoto into idvd for a slideshow. When the photos move into idvd they are not in the same order as they were in the iphoto library. What could be the possible cause of this?? I did go into iphoto and place comments in after the fact. Would that have anything to do with it?

Try this possible solution from acgray on Mac OS X Hints:
I have worked with many users who like to take iPhoto albums and make DVDs of them with iDVD. However, one very annoying bug (feature?) has to do with the fact that when you are in iDVD, it randomizes the sort order of the Photos in your album. Not only that, but it is painstaking and time consuming changing the order in iDVD.
    My solution..
Select All in the album in iPhoto you want to use in iDVD as a slideshow. Then use File -> Export -> File Export. The secret is to select "Use Album Name" as this will rename the images in sequential order, based on the order that you put them in. Save them in their own new folder somehwere easy to find (ie on the Desktop).
Then, in iDVD, either drag, or I believe you can import the entire folder into the Slideshow project window, and voila! your slides are in order. I believe you can throw away the folder with the exported images as they should now be saved into the Project, but don't quote me on that.

iphoto 9.5.1 will not import videos with .mpg extension from my pictures folder and keep getting a OSStatus error-54. Is there a way I can import such videos to the iphone library? Pls help.

This is what that error means:
    -54
    permErr
Software lock on file; Not a subscriber [permissions error on file open]
Download and launch  BatChmod.  Put the videos into a subfolder and drag that folder containing the video files into the Batchmod window.  Make sure you are the owner and have R,W, X access as well as the group.  Everyone will have R only.
Check the Change ownership and privileges, Unlock and Apply to enclosed boxes and then click on the Apply button.  When done try importing the files again.

  • Importing video with sound to GarageBand 2.0 and iOS 7.0.4

Importing video with sound to GarageBand 2.0 and iOS 7.0.4
My daughter has an iPad 2 with GarageBand 2.0 and iOS 7.0.4.  She would like to import a video file which has a sound track on it to GarageBand for iPad so that she can add an additional sound track to it.  The video/audio file to be imported would be in AVI, MPEG2 or another iPad compatible format.  Is this possible? If so, how would the mechanics work?  Would you: (1) load the file into the Movies section of iTunes and import the file from the Movies section of iTunes; (2) save the file onto an SD card and import the video/audio file from the SD card by inserting the SD card into an "SD adaptor" on an "iPad Camera Connection Kit"; or (3) email the video file to yourself and upload it to GarageBand from email?

This is part of a mobile training application and I allow the learner to record an audio response in addition to viewing the videos.  When they record a response, you can hear the playback so the device has its volume up and working when the app is running.  Since I posted this issue, I switched to .flv video and that plays ok.  It's apparently the .mp4 video that's a problem.  I'm encoding it with ffmpeg and suspect that it's something with the settings.   Do you have a recommendation for mp4 settings for OSMF?

Appears a small window that says "importing" and give to play in the source window and start .Audio be heard, but not the image. I've tried different video formats and always the same. The same video are seamlessly Quick Time and other video viewers ..... I do not know what to do, I think I've tried everything, even restart the computer to its factory settings and install Adobe Premiere vacuum and the problem remains. I tested with a trial of Premiere CS5.5 and got it. You hear the audio but no video . I have been attempting to import a movie (mov) into iDVD. The movie is 16.9 aspect ratio and every time I import it into iDVD it defaults tp 4.3 even though I set it in the beginning within iDVD at 16.9.
    Can someone help me

    Hi
There are in two places You need to set 16x9
    • First when You Create a new project
    • Then under Project Info (top row menu)
This can jump back to 4x3 if You select to use such a theme - then just go up and change it back again
    SAVE AS A DISKIMAGE
Test this first - to see that all plays as You want it
    Then first burn Your DVD

  • Problems with Chapters in iDVD 5!

Hey, I'm trying to fix a problem I'm having... I'm burning a DVD with a few different videos on them added in a certain order. When playing back on a DVD player, if I press the 'Next Chapter' button, it just skips through them randomly... not in the order they are listed in (which is also the order I have added them files into iDVD!)
Inserting the DVD back into my Mac, I noticed in the 'Go' menu of the DVD player, that each video is created within a new 'Title', not 'Chapter', so the disc has 5 titles but only 1 chapter.... is there any way I can make 1 title but each video a different chapter so I can skip through them in order?
    Thanks!
    Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hello Daniel,
if you import single movies into iDVD, they will all show up on the main menu as separate items (with 1 chapter each) and in order to play them, you'll have to select each one separately.
If you want the movies to appear as chapters, you'll have to combine them into one movie (e.g. in iMovie), then set chapter markers. Now import that movie into a new iDVD project.
    Important:
    Rules of Chapter Markers
    - No chapter markers on or within 2 seconds of a transition.
    - No chapter markers within 2 seconds of the beginning or the end of the movie.
    hope this helps

  • Quicktime File with Chapters to iDVD?

I was getting "multiplexing" errors with a particular iDVD project that I imported from iMovie 6 so I thought I would export the project as a full Quicktime file and then drag the Quicktime file into iDVD. Will the chapter markers still show up in iDVD?

    Hi
    My list on *Multiplexing Error*
    PART One.
Use of strange video/audio material eg .avi, .wmv, .mp3 etc.
    I only use.
Video - StreamingDV (miniDV tape via FireWire) and

Using strange letters in video project name eg +,/; etc. keep to a-z and 0-9
strange letters in project name eg +
as described by Donnyboy69. Does the title of your project have any symbols or decimal points in it. If so, that is why you are getting the error. I had a project that had a + sign which caused the same problem. I renamed it without the symbol and low and behold, it worked.

Back again. Here is what I have found to work. I also have and use a LaCie DVD-R/RW DL external drive and a LaCie external hard drive as well. Since yesterday I have tried a few ways to burn a themed iDVD project having four 56 minute movies on it, amounting to 226 minutes onto a DVD DL disc, capacity 240 minutes. Apple tech support really didn't know what to do but gave me a very good tip. I had two options left. Apple tech support's tip was to try disc image. One of the replies on a thread with this subject said not to, but my experience today is good. Put your project onto "Burn to disc image," under "iDVD, file." Yesterday encoding took me 23 1/2 hours. Overnight for iDVD disc image, encoding took 21 1/2 hours (again) while I slept. This morning I tried to copy/burn disc image to a DVD with Roxio Toast 7, and it stopped near the end of the burn with some kind of "error" message. So then I tried Utilities> Disc Utility> Burn icon, and followed it through. Be sure to click the DVD DL drive in the window "Burn disc in.". I had one other problem though. At the end of a 46 minute copy, it started to verify, and at the end of verify it rejected the burn. So I tried again, and when "verify" appeared, I clicked on "Skip." The disc finished burning and is doing fine and well. A long and tortuous process, but at last something works. I made several additional copies using Disc Utility. Best wishes. Chuck, Chicago.
    2. Disconnect any other external devices not absolutly needed.
eg external USB/USB2 hard disks, other FW hard disks etc.

(Not a 'guy' but I will answer!)
First, I do not think that mixing widescreen and standard makes a difference in iDVD.
Second, you should use a better brand of DVD disk. Also, many of us have experienced fewer problems on playback with DVD-R disks. Recommended brands here are Verbatim, Maxell and Taio Yuden. Memorex and TDK are not consistent and may not give you a correct burn. They apparently have fewer layers in the composition of the disk. I have always used Verbatim DVD-R disks and have not had any burn problems.
Also, choose a slower burn speed, 4x or less.
Third, to determine if the iDVD project will burn properly, create a disk image file (from within iDVD, go File->Save as Disk Image) and test it. Mount the disk image and then open DVD Player (in Applications) and view your project. If it plays correctly, you can then burn the actual DVD disk from the disk image file using Disk Utility.

I did everything I've seen suggested, but a friend (who used to be an Apple Genius) suggested that I do a safe reboot (by holding down the shift key until you see the spinning gear on grey background, then release, then restart when your start-up screen appears).
It worked, and I got a clean burn from iDVD.
Hopefully this can help other people.

Well, I finally got it, and it was odd enough to post here incase anyone looks this topic up again. Many things were tried, including burning the uneditited film, the edited film without titles and chapter markers, abbreviating the chapter markers in case length was the issue (remember the old iMovie used to truncate them when moving to iDVD?). In the process, I noticed that one, and only one, chapter marker was on the same line as the title marker. All the others were on the line above. The only way I seemed able to change that was to clip a few seconds of film. After that last clip, the offending marker took a place on the line above, as were all the others. That run published, compiled completely and burned. That's one for the books.

  • Audiio problems importing slideshow from iphoto into idvd

Hello everyone, I'm new at creating slide shows and videos. I'm creating a montage for a party.
I have created a slides how in iphoto 09, exported it, then opened it in idvd 09. Every time, something gets screwed up in the music I had chosen to play along with the slides how. Usually the first song plays fine, then the second song plays part way, then the first song starts up again.
So, I tried exporting the slide show without audio, figuring I could add it in idvd. However, because it is importing the slide show as a video, I can't seem to get the "audio well" button or any way to add audio to the slide show.
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to add sound? I have also tried saving the slide show as a quicktime movie, but can't seem to import it into either imovie or idvd. Help!!

  • Can I drop an IMovie Slideshow with music into IDVD?

    Hello,
I created (and it took a long time) a slideshow with music using IMovie. Now I want to burn it to a DVD and am realizing I need to put it into IDVD. I saved it to my desktop and then dropped it into the IDVD Magic program but it does not save the slideshow. Or if it does, I can't seem to figure out how to play it. I also can't figure out how to choose the picture for the IDVD theme page. Any help with how to burn my IMovie slideshow on a DVD using either IDVD or some other way, would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Or if it does, I can't seem to figure out how to play it.
Click on the "Preview" button in the bottom left corner of the iDVD window. For more details go to iDVD Help: >_Making a Magic iDVD_
I also can't figure out how to choose the picture for the IDVD theme page.
Once you have added your slideshowGo to Help: _Adding images and movies to drop zones_
Any help with how to burn my IMovie slideshow on a DVD using either IDVD or some other way, would be greatly appreciated.
I am not familiar with the workings Magic DVD, but if you have already created the slideshow, it might be just as easy to follow the regular route in making this project. If you wish to try this, follow these steps.
    1. Open iDVD, select to create a new project, and name it.
    2. Select the theme.
    3. Import your slideshow into iDVD. Go to your movies folder (or wherever your project is saved), and drag the iMovie icon (the one with the star) to the window of your iDVD project. Avoid drop zones.
    4. You can add photos to the drop zones by clicking on the "Media" Button in the bottom right corner, and then on "Photos". Just drag and drop the photos to their desired location.
    5. Preview by clicking on the triangle at the bottom of the window.
    6. When you are ready to burn, first go to File>Save as disk image. This will allow you to have a final check of your project before burning to DVD. You can see how this project will actually play when played on a regular DVD player. If everything is fine, you can then burn the DVD using Disk Utility.
    I hope this helps.

  • Importing video with correct date

I'm having issue importing videos into iphoto with the original date of the video. I'm importing from a canon vixia HFS10, when i tried it a month or so back it went into iphoto correctly, with the original date but now whenever i try it, even with the same videos that worked date wise before, it only imports into iphoto with the date that i actually imported it with.
    Any ideas?
I know you can alter the date via the edit options, but this seems a bit backward when i know, somehow, that i can import the video automactially with the date.

i only imported the videos from the same camera, one time they went with the date it was taken, the other time i tried a couple of weeks later it only imported with the date of import so it's not the camera

  • Having trouble with chapters in iDVD

To start off, I have searched the forums and haven't had luck finding the answer to this particular question, although I'm sure it's been asked before.
I'm using FotoMagico to create slideshow movies of my vacations. I'd like to use iDVD to create one DVD that includes four separate vacations. For each vacation, I've created a Submenu that I intend to be the chapters (days) for each vacation. Rather than making one movie with separate chapters for each vacation, I made separate movies for each day. I put them into the chapter selection submenu and each plays fine within iDVD. The problem is that if I hit the chapter skip button it takes me back to the submenu. It really doesn't recognize these as chapters.
I'm pretty new to iDVD so maybe there's something obvious I'm missing. Should I be making a single movie with embedded chapter markers then bringing that one movie into iDVD? If I do that, will iDVD recognize the chapter markers so they show up individually in the chapter selection submenu?
Hopefully I've explained this adequately; I want to make a DVD that looks like every other one I've ever rented - main menu with chapter selections on a submenu. I can 'jump' to any chapter from the submenu but then skip from chapter to chapter once it starts playing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

Keep in mind that if you make the 4 movies into one then iDVD6 will play all of your vacations as one feature length and not stop until it reaches the very end.
Not sure if you want this to happen or not. It sounds like the one full length movie approach won't really meet your stated objective ..... unless you just want to have iDVD run the entire vacation spectrum and then rely on the chapter markers to locate the start point for each of the 4 presentations. Is that what you want?

  • Sharing iMovie not taking video with it for iDVD

I have created a movie in iMovie that has video that was recorded and some still shots at the end. When I am in iMovie and review what I have done, the entire movie is there (opening title shot, video & sound, still shots with song from iTunes playing in background). When I share the movie so I can create an iDVD, it seems to be doing everything that I need. Then when I go into iDVD to make a project, the movie that I shared is there and everything is contained in the movie EXCEPT the video part! I have all of the audio that goes with the video, the titles, still shots, etc. What am I do wrong???? Thank you for your help because it is driving me nuts to not be able to figure it out.

When I start a new project and import a video with audio, then drag to the timeline , it puts the latter on audio 4 track instead of track 1. Why is it skipping 3 tracks?

. Thanks Bill.  It was a mono track and the 3 above were stereo.  I deleted the 3 empty tracks and now it is below the video directly.  What I am also wondering about is why the video track can be widened vertically,by dragging the bottom border and the previous audio 1 track could be also, but this one can not.  Is it not possible to see the waveform as I can when I imported an audio file in a different project?  That one was expandable veritically. There was no video in that one.
