Importing Video Without Copying

Hi, on the Mountain Lios OSX iMovie i had the option to Import Videos to the Event Library just moving, without doing a duplicate copy.
I dont want my MAC to waste time doing the COPYING because I have 120 Gbs files and it takes a lot of time doing the unnecesary copy of that file because the file was captured in the same HARD DRIVE. I just want the same option i used to have in the previous iMovie that im really missing a lot.
PLEASE, SOMEBODY HELP!!!!
THANKS
DANIEL

Yep, I agree with you. As far as I know iMovie always copies the clips into the Library's original media folder for the event. No way to get a reference copy. Real space waster. You can send a request to Apple via the iMovie menu item, and request a change.

Import photos without copying? I Have thousands of photos on a hard drive separate from my mac and i dont have enough space on my mac to copy them to. Any way to import without copying to the local hard drive?

Yes, but you might want to think carefully about it.
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
This is an attractive option for some users at face value, but it contains a significant number of issues that you might want to consider before making the decision to run a Referenced Library
    How to do it:
iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck the box at 'Copy items to the iPhoto Library'
Now when you import iPhoto makes an alias in the Library Package that points to the stored file. Note: iPhoto still creates a thumbnail of the image and it makes a Preview of edited photos inside the Library Package.
    Issues?
    1. You are responsible for file management. That's more work:
You must first move the files from your camera to the storage location before importing.
If you want to delete files then you must first trash them from iPhoto and then afterwards find them in your storage and trash them.
Thereafter, you cannot move the files on early versions of iPhoto at all, on iPhoto 08 and later you may move them on the same Volume or Disk. If you move them to a new volume or disk the aliases my break. If they are on an different volume and you move them the aliases will break.
    You cannot rename the files.
Migrating: moving to a new machine, moving the files to another disk are all a lot more complex.
    2. You gain no extra functionality from running a Referenced Library. Nothing. This is just storage. You still manage the files via iPhoto. You edit them with iPhoto or via iPhoto's External Editor setting, otherwise you're changes will not be available in iPhoto. You don't save  byte of storage space.
    3.  If you have the Library on one volume and the photos on another you if anything changes in the path to a file (Like if you upgrade your machine, move the files on the NAS or on to another one?) then the alias will break, and you'll have to repair it manually. For every photo in the Library. One at a time.
Why do you want to run a Referenced Library?
Because my photos won't fit on my HD?
You can run a Managed library from an external disk. Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
You're worried about accessing the files?
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Importing Video without Fire Wire

How do I import video from my Sony HI8 camera which is not equipped with fire wire. Is it possible to do this using the USB port and if so How. Thanks. I am a Newbee

If your Olympus software is incompatible with Mac, have you tried using a memory card reader to upload those photos? That's the great thing about Macs - you can usually do without the camera drivers and software,
Long story short, I do hobby underwater photography/video and my equipment, while it works fine, is 1990 vintage, bulky, and a pain in the butt to travel with. I wanted to up grade to a camera that was small, would do stills and video and had an underwater housing available. I settled on the Olympus 710 with the 1 gig XD card. Problem was that the salesman told me that it would download into my HP and I could use Windows Movie Maker to edit movies. WRONG! WMM uses .avi format the camera saves in .mov. WMM can't use .mov so i bought a conversion program which converted it to .mov.avi.I now have 3 conversion programs, none of which work and to tell you the truth I wanted to strangle someone. A buddy of mine has a MAC and said it was the answer. I connected my camera to his Macbook and it immediately downloaded the photos and video without Olympus software and I could use the video in Imovie. I am happy. Now I just have to solve the "old stuff" problem. This forum has been very helpful.

  • Importing photos without copying them

I have all my photos as JPEGs on a shared network volume, with each 36 exposure film in its own folder each of which has its own HTML files so the photos can be viewed in a web browser.
This all works very well but I would like to be able to view the photos in iPhoto. When I try adding them to the iPhoto library, iPhoto copies them over to the local hard drive, and since there is about 10GB of images the hard drive fills up.
I want iPhoto to use the shared network volume, I want to be able to tell it that the photos are located in that folder and not to copy them when importing into the library. Just as in iTunes you can set the iTunes music folder location, I want to be able to do the same in iPhoto but there does not appear to be an equivalent preferences option.
Is there a way to do this?
    Tim.

    Yes.
Store the originals on the external drive(s), put the Aperture Library on the internal drive and Reference the Masters on the external drives.
The use of a Referenced-Masters Library is discussed below.
    HTH
    -Allen Wicks
    Referenced-Masters Library
Best solution, especially with mobility-hardware computers like laptops and iMacs, is to reconfigure your image Masters to have a *Referenced-Masters Library* on the internal drive with the Masters referenced on external drives via FW800 or (preferably) eSATA.
However Referenced Masters usually do still work adequately with Masters accessed on externals via slower methods like FW400 or USB. After a slow reconfiguration process it will work fine and the Referenced-Masters Library will remain a reasonable size, not grow to overfill the internal drive.
Note that Vaults back up the Library but a Referenced-Masters Library does not have the Masters in it, so Masters must be separately backed up. I strongly recommend that *back up of original Master files be performed BEFORE importing into Aperture* or any other app anyway. Once one is doing that backup of a Referenced-Masters Library is easier (due to much smaller Library size) than backing up Aperture's (unfortunately default) Managed-Masters setup.
The Aperture Library should live on the internal drive for best speed and all drives should be less than 70% full for speed and stability.
In the future back up Masters before import into Aperture. Then with the new Masters on external drives select Store Files: "In their current location" from the import window when importing into Aperture. This will maintain a *Referenced-Masters Library*. Routinely create Vaults to back up the Library.

  • How to import Video without a firewire!

I have a Canon PowerShot SD750 brand new. I installed the software and was able to upload photos and film but I could not import it from a file into imovie HD.
I was told not to install the regular software when I was at the Apple store so I took it off and usng a usb could not even get my macbook pro to recognize the camera.
According to the help section on i movie I need to use a firewire cable but my camera did not come with one. Any ideas?

iMovie '06 can only import from Firewire connected DV camcorders and the built-in iSight camera directly. For other devices, you need to copy the video clips onto your harddisk, convert them into a suitable format for iMovie '06, and then import the movies into a iMovie '06 project.
When you plug the camera in, it should show up as an external drive. iPhoto will probably pop up and ask you if you want to import photos from the camera. iPhoto should copy the movies, too, and you can then export them from your iPhoto library. Or copy them directly from your camera using Finder.
Now start an iMovie project, and try importing the clips. If iMovie doesn't recognize the format, convert the clips first to DV or H.264 using an application like MPEG Streamclip.
If you have iMovie '08, you can probably eliminate a step or two from the procedure above. It will recognize movies in your iPhoto library.

  • Import video without subtitles

I have some .m4v files that I need to edit in iMovie.  They have a optional subtitle track when playing in Quicktime.  When I import them into iMovie, the subtitles are displayed. Can someone please tell me how to turn them off? I don't want to see the subtitle track in the imported movies I'm editing.

What happens if you turn off the subtitle track in QuickTime then try to Export from the File Menu? Choose the largest size available from the drop down list that appears in the Export Dialog box. It may be enough to turn off the sub-title track if is saved with it not being displayed perhaps? It's something to try I guess.

  • IMovie freezes when importing video

I am using iMovie 10.0.6 and trying to import video from a JVC Everio GM-HM320BU.  I have been importing video without problems for quite some time, but always from the main memory of the camcorder.  Recently I had to record some video on the SD card installed in the camcorder as extra memory.  I received the error message "iMovie cannot import your selection" and iMovie froze.  I had to "force quit" iMovie.  After reading a bit, I realized I should have imported the video on the SD card via a card reader and that it cannot be import in the usual manner.
But now I get the same message from iMovie every time I try to import video, even from the main memory of the camcorder, and iMovie freezes.  It appears iMovie needs to be reset so it can import video from the main memory.  HELP.

Sounds like an elegant solution if in fact you have iLife '06 from which to restore. For those of us that have recently purchased an Apple product (because "it just works") this is not a viable option. I'm not going to go out and purchase any previous versions of iLife when I paid for what is supposed to be the latest greatest. Obviously the solution already exists because it was working fine before the last update, seems to me that it should be simple enough to turn back the clock a little so that we can all get back to work. Don't get me wrong I'm happy for you that you've found a solution, I'd probably do the same thing if I could. Right now my strategy is to continue to complain until something gets done, I encourage everyone that has this issue to weigh in. As for now my "work around" is to back to my PC based computer to download and edit all my video. "How do you like them apples", Apple.

  • The camcorder is conected but I am not able to import videos

I have a MacBook and I just up dated to iMovie 08. I use to conect my Digital Camera (Sony DCR HC17E) to import videos without any problem but this is not working on this new version. After to conect the camcorder I am able to control the camera using iMovie but when I play the video I can not see any image, just a blue screen. After click to import nothing happend, the tape plays but no image neither import video. I have already done all up dates on iLife and iMovie. Does someone knows about it, what should I do?

I realized what happened. I recorded the movie with a Canon camcorder but I want to import the video using a Sony camcorder. iMovie is not able to do that in spite of the camera is able to play the video. Importing movies recorded on Sony there is no problem. Probably frames per second are not the same and the program is not able to recognize and adjust.

  • Edit video without importing locally?

I'm brand new to Final Cut and FCPX is my first experience with the product.
I have a Mac Mini server with a thunderbolt-attached storage array that I'm using to store my raw footage.
I'm editing video on my MacBook Air using the storage device mounted in OSX as the source. When I create a new event and import video, FCPX wants to copy the video my my MBA where I have extremely limited space.
Do I have the wrong workflow here or maybe I'm missing an option somewhere? I just want to use the video from storage in the events instead of using any local space. Any suggestions?

In user preference uncheck copy in the import preference. This will work for most things depending on where and what you're copying from.

  • How to import multiple XML files into one inDesign document without copy/paste ?

I use InDesign CS6, and I have several XML files with the same structure. Only the data are different.
I created  an Indesign layout with some tagged placeholder frames on merge mode, for automated layout.
Today for each XML file I have to create a new InDesign document to import the XML. Everything works fine. Then in order to have all Indesign layouts one after the other into a single Indesign layout, I have to use the copy/paste function.
I mean for example, copy the contents of all documents to the first one. Or add pages of other documents to the first one, then delete spaces between each page.
So my question is the following:
How to repeat this process without copy/paste function, knowing that the
number of XML files could be unknown.
Thank you very much for your answer.

Yes, effectively I would like to catalogue the files into one collection so i can save as one PDF and Print as one.:)
I know I could save each AI as a pdf them then merge the pdf's together in acrobat, but I have nearly 100 files so would feel more comfortable seeing them all together before print / saving.
My concern is that if I insert them in Ai, will the file resolution reduce? and will the ai still be editable and would it update the indesign file?
    Thanks for the quick reply

  • Is there a way to import my STD quality video without converting it with another program?

I understand how to import the HD quality video through imovie, but cannot seem to import the STD quality video without first converting it through another program? Anyone know how to do it without the cumbersome converting process? Thanks.

What kind of camcorder did you use to shoot the video?
If you aren't sure, will the STD quality video play in QuickTime Player? If so, click Command-I to open the Inspector and tell us everything listed by the word FORMAT: as well as the dimensions of the clip.  (Instead of Command-I you could alternatively click WINDOW/INSPECTOR.)

  • How do I import without copying?

I have all of my mp3 files located on a remote server on my local lan, however, as there is about 56G worth of files, I really do not want itunes to import and copy everything to my local computer. Is there a way to allow itunes to make a playlist of all the remote mp3's without copying them to my local computer?

Open the Advanced section of the iTunes preferences and turn off the option to automatically copy the content to the iTunes music folder.

  • Import from camera archive without copying files?

I created a few camera archives from DV tapes. Is there a way to import footage from the archive without copying (duplicating) the files into the Events Folder? The option is greyed out on the import window.
When I open the archive package contents I can see all the .mov files, so I'm hoping there's a way to create a reference file instead of duplicating the file.  I'm trying to save some hard drive space.
    Thanks.

When you are copying from a hard drive that does not access the camera import function of the import window. The purpose of an archive is as a backup, to keep a separate set of media which cannot get corrupted by use or computer or drive failure. Generally it's in a separate drive from that used directly in production.
