Importing VOBs -- no audio?

I'm trying to import VOBs from a DVD (actually, I trim it first with MPEG Streamclip and do a "save as" to avoid re-encoding the video) and while they are able to be imported, none of them have audio.
I've read around the net that this is expected behavior and the suggested solution is to do exactly what I'm trying to avoid -- re-encode the video. I'm concerned about a loss of quality but mainly I'm concerned about the amount of time it would take -- there's lots of footage and a looming deadline.
Can anyone suggest a quick way to get DVD footage in to FCE quickly and cleanly? Does FCP or Premiere have better support for this sort of thing?
And before anyone comments, there is no copyright infringement going on here.
Thank you for any suggestions.

I think you have no choice: FCE cannot work with MPEG2 (VOB files) but only with DV-NTSC or PAL (or AIC for HDV).
So you have to convert the video for example using MPEG Streamclip: open the VOB file and then Export to QuickTime (cmd-E - NOT Export to DV!) with Compression: Apple DV-PAL (or Apple DV-DVCPRO/NTSC), Quality: 100%, fps: 25 for PAL or 29,97 for NTSC, Audio: uncompressed, Stereo, 48 KHz.
When imported to FC, the resulting .mov will not require video nor audio rendering.
As far as I know there is no relevant loss of quality with this process, even though the DV movie cannot be better than the original VOB.

  • Why does iMovie import vobs missing audio?

    Hello
I did import vobs in iMovie 11 from a personal dvd back up (a personal copy made from a VHS into a standard dvd video) in order to make some adjustments, but, surpise, no audio at all!. Checked single vobs and the whole dvd and everything works fine both on the mac and a home dvd player. I tried also to rename .vob in .mpeg, iMovie imports each without any problem, but it's always silent.
    Any hint?
    Thanks, Gianfranco

If you have not already done so, update to the latest (just released) version 9.0.4 - this update includes fixes for saving audio adjustments. Hopefully, it will fix your problem!

  • PE3 - Audio & Video out of synch on imported VOB files

I have tried adding some footage imported from DVD & is saved in a folder on the PC (by the PE process).
The file is stored as VOB 1 & VOB 2. When I import this file into the PE project the first half plays OK. When it plays onto the second file, the audio is lagging behind the video by a considerable amount.
If I view the file separately (where it is stored) with Windows Media Player, it plays back fine.
When I view the file in PE in the preview window, the out of synch fault occurs.
Something is happening in the import process to the PE project.
Anyone, have any ideas on the problem?

Here is a reply that I posted to a past thread that will give you options for fixing the Out-of-Sync issues when trying to use VOB files within PE.
In all cases it is better to not import VOB directly to PE, but convert to DV-AVI via one of these methods and then use the AVI format.
The last bullet below sends you to a Muvipix link describing how to combine multiple VOB's from one disc to a single file, this will cure the Sync problem, then convert this file to DV-AVI for import to PE:
I take the min-DVD directly from camcorder to my PC, and capture the disk via Power Director.
PD will convert the VOB's directly to DV-AVI Type 2 on one pass.
    I then load this DV-AVI into PE7.
(PD v7 was pre-installed on my new PC from HP, or it can be purchased from Cyberlink).
    Other options to try:
Copy the VOB's directly from the mini-DVD to your PC and use Prism to convert these to AVI.
Prism is a free convert utility and can be found here:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/415317?tstart=0
Or load the VOB or Mpeg into PE, then use that to convert to AVI.
(Export to DV-AVI with PE8 is done with SHARE/PC, not Export under the File Menu, which is greyed out).
I've had many issues trying to work with Mpeg's and VOB's when loaded directly to PE with limited success.
So if you can get it converted successfully to AVI outside of PE, I've found this to be a better approach.
Post results, if any of this works for you...
Note: One other thing, if you are working directly with VOB's to PE, especially multiple VOB's from a single DVD, you can encounter out-of-sync issues between video and audio. If this occurs, review this link from Muvipix:

  • Import VOB file ok, export shaky

I am using Adobe Premiere CS5, works fine.
Now I am trying to reedit old home videos so I imported VOB files from my burned DVDs. 4:3 ratio movies, I expand these so I have full widescreen (16:9) view.
Video and audio seem to be all right.
However when I try to export  the new file (to 16:9), horizontal movements are not ok, the persons or objects which move horizontally (quickly) are not ok, the outlines are weird.
So within Adobe Premiere there is no problem, but after exporting the file (AVI), it just doesn't look right on the TV.

VOB files are highly compressed... a DV AVI file is about 13Gig per hour, a VOB of that same hour compressed to fit on a DVD
When you edit a VOB and then export, you are adding a second compression... so your results are not going to be all that great

  • Importing VOB files into PP CS3

I have looked at numerous forum notes on this problem with PP and I've about come to the conclusion that the easiest thing might be to just buy a copy of Premiere Elements. I understand Premiere Elements will import VOBs and convert them to AVI. Some of the other solutions require several pieces of software, multiple steps, etc sometimes with limited successs.
My most recent attempt (just renaming the VOB file to MPG) resulted in good quality video with no audio. Is the primary reason for loss of audio the AC3 Dolby? Will copying the ad2mcac3dec.dll file from the Encore CS3 directory to the PP CS3 root directory really solve that problem? Is that it? That would be nice but somehow I'm a little skeptical. Are there other reasons for losing the audio when you just rename the VOB file to MPG?

  • Vob file audio problem....what the heck.

whenever i import a vob file for some reason it plays audio from a past imported vob file instead of the audio that belongs to the video i just imported.....what can i do to fix this its freaking annoying!

Are the .vob source files in unique folders, or all together? As .vob files from a DVD always follow the same naming convention, quite likely that your two .vob files have the same name and that is confusing Premiere. Perhaps go into Windows and change the name of the .vob file and re-import again, what happens then?

  • Can you please help with importing CDs and audio books?

I tried to search for this topic, but had no luck.
Have been happy with IPOD until today. On trying to import a new audio book to iTunes and then updating IPOD to install on it, I can see the title in both the iTunes Library and menu of IPOD. However, instead of seeing a normal 57:32 (or similar stop time), I am seeing 789:57:13.152. When I try to play it through iTunes or IPOD, it skips it as if it wasn't there and plays something else. I checked out importing a music CD, and find the same problem.
Appreciate any advice you can give.

let's first see if you can get the CDs to import normally if you switch off "error correction" in the iTunes Advanced-Importing preferences subtab.
but if no joy there, try checking through the other suggestions from the following document:

  • Import video and audio from a dvd into FCP

Is there an easier way to import video and audio into Final Cut Pro - I am playing it on a DVD player and making a digital tape of it. Then logging and capturing it into FCP.

Hello and welcome to the forum!
Yes, there are a few ways that are faster. Have a look at this thread http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=-1&messageID=3465691
You could use software, such as "streamclip", or import by plugging your camera into your capture device and hooking your capture device into your computer and capturing by non-controllable device settings.
    Good Luck

  • Any way to import VOB files?

I want to take an existing DVD created with a standalone burner, and replace the generic Sony menu with a custom menu I create in Encore 5.  I alsmo need to change the chapter stops.
I'd like to be able to import the VOB files from the DVD so I don't need to recompress them, but every time I drag a VOB file into Encore, no matter the filename or size, it names the file VTS_01_1.VOB and gives it a duration of 15 seconds.
Is there a way to work with these files?  Or a program that will split my VOB files into mv2 and ac3 files so that I can work with them without doing any recompression?

    toecheese wrote:
Why does Encore allow me to import VOB files at all if it isn't going to handle them properly?
The reason is in "DVD created with a standalone burner"
Such files are very often NOT according the strict standard... I think it mentions that in the link I posted a bit ago
Also, VOB's on a DVD contain menu and other information... since they are, of course, an output + viewing format, not meant to be edited or reused

  • How can I Import 2 channel audio from a Sony PMW300 camera?

How can I Import 2 channel audio from a Sony PMW300 camera?

    Thanks for the reply.
The link to your prior thread is
    Audio
I suspect that the issue of no audio for your .mp4 file goes to your conversion method MXF to .mp4.
Please excuse if I am saying what you already know. When you import your video into Premiere Elements (in your case 12 Mac), a project
preset is established, either by you manually or the project automatically. That project preset contains a description of the project settings
for audio as well as video. Unless you select one of the project presets which are described for use with 5.1 channel, your audio in video audio
imports into a stereo project. It is in the export area that you will find your opportunity to customize (if necessary) the settings for audio.
In the project, if applicable to your situation, you can duplicate an audio channel (See Fill Left or Fill Right under fx Effects/Audio Effects).
Please let me ask this to make sure of the details.
If you import your .mp4 with 2 channel audio (derived from your .mxf convert and dragged to Video Track 1/Audio Track 1) and cannot hear the sound....
    a. do you see any evidence for an audio file in the Timeline Audio track 1?
    b. if you do, how many wave forms do you see, one or two?
    c. if you have the audio meters opened while you are playing back the Timeline content in Edit area, do you see 1 or 2 channels and is
    there activity in both.
    d. when you import the file into Project Assets, do you observe any conforming activity going on in progress bar in the lower right cover of the workspace...if
so, do you wait for it to go to completion before continuing on?
We could also try deleting the conformed audio in the Media Cache Files Folder to force the program to re-conform the audio. See Edit Menu/Preferences/Scratch Disks should show you the location of the Media Cache Files Folder whose contents you will be deleting.
Please review and consider, and then let me know if I targeted your question. If not, please do not hesitate to let me know, and I will rethink my reply based
    on your response.
    Thank you.

  • How to Import VOB files into Premiere Pro?

  • Problem importing VOB files using Premiere Pro CC

Something must have changed between CS6 & CC as far as importing VOB files from non-DRM DVDs.
When I import the VOB files from a DVD using CS6, the import seems to go fine.
But when I import the VOB files from the same DVD using CC, the video info Frame Size and Aspect Ratio of the last VOB files comes in "wrong" when it should be the same as all of the other files.
It always seems to be the last file and it always seems to be off by the same amount.
I can Interpret Footage back to the same aspect ratio as the rest of the VOB files, but I cannot seem to fix the incorrect framesize.
I am using Premiere Pro CC Version 7.2.1(4).
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Importing MPEG-4 audio files into itunes

    Hi,
I am a new user of iTunes. I am unable to import MPEG-4 audio files from an audio CD into my iTunes library. This audio CD was created by a friend on his MAC.
Interestingly, I am able to play the same MPEG-4 files through my Windows Media Player. I have the most recent and updated versions of Quicktime (7.4.5) and the most updated iTunes player for Windows (7.6.2.9). Coincidentally, the same audio CD has some MP3 files which I am able to import into iTunes with no problem.
    Would greatly appreciate any help.
    Thanks

Incidentally, I am able to play these same MPEG-4 files through my QuickTime player just fine.
    Thanks.
